Re: CSEMS Research in Indian Academia
Do you have someone similar in the Indian system? Because THIS is the person who takes your squiggles and application-less papers, and explains to the fearsome Jarnails with all their ribbons, why it means a breakthrough. I usually did not know WHY they liked my research (on the rare occasions when...

I am a researcher in the field of high performance computing. My major professor is counted in the who's who of this field. About 5 years back he wanted to return to India. He started teaching at an IIT for one semester every year. I traveled with him for a couple of years. Here are my observations...

Re: Re: Kaveri & aero-engine discussion
That may not be quite correct. I count 5 IITs with aero B.Tech programmes (not a pre-req. for propulsion-related research, BTW, but may help slightly): IITB, IITD?, IITK, IITC, IITKgp. + IISc Blr. Plus the other IITs like Guwahati, Gandhinagar, Benares? Plus the new Space Science institute in TVM. ...

Re: CSEMS Research in Indian Academia
Will post question here. A couple of years ago I saw an ad for a Pratt&Whitney Chair at IISc. I assumed this was a United Technologies move to counter the unfettered advantages that GE was getting in India, and start getting a piece of the engine Halwa. But I also HOPED that IISc folks would us...

Maulana UlanBatori, Along the lines of the (GE) unducted propfan, is the (P&W) geared turbofan that is being pitched as the "next best thing since sliced double-roti aka CFM56". Doesn't have contra-rotating spools IIRC, but planetary gearbox for speed reduction like a turboprop. Might ...

I've seen men from the Mechanized Regiments use a shorter and automatic version of the SLR. This was arounf 93-94. Rohit, Not a shorter version - it was the same length but with forestock shortened. This was to enable the SLR barrel to fit in and to be fired through the gunports in the BMPs of the ...

what I didn't understand is why there were fatalities in spite of NSG having much better body armour. there was an article specifying the protection level NIJ xyz. can't locate it. anyway, isn't it good enough for AK rounds ? where were they shot ? One thing NSG is superb about feedback and the updation of their training modules (anybody remember the Rubaiyya training scenario ? :D ). I point is mainly about reducing casualties. Both their own as well as hostages. how different piglets (criminals or terrorists) think, react or act will not always be covered in training manuals. it would be waste to use the DPSA jags for the mud mover role. as kartman says , in absence of specialized CAS a/c in IAF it would be the floggers and fishbeds which would do the CAS job. they would be the possible candidates for nag integration. Also, you have to keep in mind that IAF doesn't have...

The Nag missile itself is ~42 kgs... with a launcher as well as the associated fire-control systems, this is way too heavy for a typical 2-man ATGM team. Re: Indian Missile Technology Discussion - 27 March 2008
Comparing the Nag and the Akash configurations throws up an anomaly. Nag is still mounted on a BMP-2 based carrier while Akash needs to tested on a T-72 chasis. I find it a bit strange that an anti-tank missile carrier which will be travelling along with the tanks be made up of BMP while a medium r...

The K9 engine (kaveri developemental serial 9) is consistently doing well. The issues with K9 are a bit more weight than the expected, a bit less after burner efficiency than expected. IIRC, the MSMC's description (from a DRDO TechFocus issue) specifically mentioned that the 5.56X30 round is meant to counter body armour, which the 9X19 round of the Sterling cannot.
