Niran - main armament is a 30mm CRN-91 gun + 2 12.7mm HMGs plus a variety of 7.62mm weapons. The firing was done with a 7.62mm LMG from the reports to date.

Re: IAF Re-Equipment Schedule

Now - didn't 17 sqn convert in 2012 to MKIs ?

I would suggest that realistically we can assume 21 ac / sqn inclusive of reserves. The 9 sqn supposedly operating the type would lead us to 189 aircraft. The remaining ac could be used to begin forming the 10th

Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat

It is really disgusting to read the nonsense from elements in the media. Even smugglers can be fired upon in hot pursuit. Warning shots in such operations are not uncommon. In fact I have heard that the Brits used 4.5" guns for warning shots. IIRC the rules of hot pursuit indicate that once the...

Re: Breaking news: Coast guard intercepted terrorist boat

Aditya G - IPV is ICGS designation. TTCG designates them CPV (semantics really). Only the Sankalp and the Samrat have 2 30mm turrets.

I always think that there are some scenarios where the old Oerlikons could be useful - especially in the constabulary role.

But remember 12.7mm machine guns are also fitted and I have seen them used for warning shots before.

It would be really interesting to see an after action report (redacted of course) of the incident.

I think what is becoming clear to me is nobody is really sure how far off Mk1 is from ASR. Is STR/ITR really appalling or just not up to ASR (which seems to be set high) ? Is the MK.1 a bad performing aircraft ? Not so sure now. Will it hold its own against a M2K ? Certainly against a -21 bison. Wha...

Question: what are the STR and ITR of the Tejas and how do these compare to the ASR ?

Also, how do they compare to JF-17 and J-10 ?

If things are within an acceptable margin with the latter two, then there really should be no issue with more Mk.1 orders until Mk.2 comes on line.

Re: LCA News and Discussions, 22-Oct-2013

Back to Tejas - I thought clean take of weight - fuel pilot and 2 R-73 was around 9500kg. Add 4 Derby and you get another 600kg.

So given thrust of 9163kg (afterburner) vs 10,200 kg A2A TOW on full fuel and you get TTW ratio of around 0.89.

Is the STR/ ITR of the Tejas really that bad ?

Ah - misunderstood the question & answer. What I really meant is if we did it would it not be a huge change ? From $2tr. it could be a significant jump. I raise the issue because the this govt is proposing changing the base year to 2011-2012, I think.

Why do you say it unlikely in respect of base year revision ? Given the changing shape of the Indian economy plus growth, it could be a substantial change if done across the board. Then again, you're the expert and I yield to you on these matters.
