Aditya, SFF/Vikas is under Cabinet Secratariat aka RAW, not MHA.
God help us if the MHA ever gets hold of it.

Re: Role of armed helicopters in army operations
The Mi-25/ 35 still has no mast mounted sensors..so it is very exposed during an attack. Also with the Thar being one of the major AO of these "troop carrying" gunships with their huge size are sure to be a liability. We need a pure attack helicopter in the Cobra/ Apache / Tiger II mould.....

Re: Significant breakthrough in Nag project
Rudra, thanks for the respectful address but Rajit will do just fine:-) Strange, I always thought the arms merchants flocking to the country for JVs et al was a result of our finally getting rid of an antiquated "Brahminical' sense of superiority that we could do everything ourselves, when coun...

Rather than blame the DDM always...let's wake up and smell the coffee that the IGMDP has only delivered 2 out of 5 missiles successfully so far. DRDO's lack of transparency on Trishul (Note George's comments about it being a technology demonstrator), and finally coming out with the admission that it...

Re: Indo-French exercises: Mixed results
As for the India Mig 29s avionics fit being state of the art...cosider a bit of intrapolative logic...we werent satisfied with the original Su 30 fit - a later aircraft than the Mig 29- and spent a good 2 years getting the avionics fit together.

Re: Indo-French exercises: Mixed results
Just went thru a few news reports and am intrigued by the consistently candid admissions from the IAF crowd about their "BVR" inadequacy. The assertions by some pilots that they have "only now" started practicing BVR flies in the face of facts...the Mig 23 in the early 80s was th...

Vishnu Great info....(quite) a few questions!! : 1. Krishnaswamy has been quoted as saying that the IAF Mirages have completed flight refuelling modifications..could you get visual ID of the same? 2. WVR, were the Indian Mirages simulating Magic IIs or R73s since they can carry the latter as well?? ...

As long as there's huge quantity of armour to be dealt with, the only better anti-tank weapon, other than another tank is a helicopter gunship.

Re: Role of armed helicopters in army operations
If unconfirmed rumours are true the U.S. has agreed to sell us Orion Maritime patrol aircraft...an Apache deal would be much more emotive and alarming to the Pakistanis but if our leadership can manage 40 odd Apaches (even non longbows will do..the Israelis would configure something for us)...then i...

Re: Role of armed helicopters in army operations
IMHO, as long as you dont have a mast mounted Target detection and acquisition system / Scout heptrs, and your gunship platform remains the Hind, you will have a very limited doctrinal envelope in a war situation. Thats why the ALH conversion into a dedicated gunship with mast mounted sensors or an ...

Re: Role of armed helicopters in army operations
Ravi When you talk about operating procedures are you asking about the IA-IAF liaison at times of war or doctrine? Former has been answered above but in terms of doctrine there are 2 essential philosophies to the employment of gunships (assumption that their primary tasking is in an anti-armour role...

Re: SEAD ops in the IAF
Daulat, I think the basic difference with the missile is that if it doesnt find a target it can come back:-). The way most UCAVs in the SEAD role work is that they are guided into the general area co-ordinates by ground operators, upon which they commence a loitering phase, waiting for radars to lig...

Johann...great article on Bekaa but a couple of points 1.
