Re: Indian Naval Discussion
Let's be clear that the Swallow class of the 1980s and what the IN are purchasing are different ships. The design that the IN has bought is larger than the Gaeta class. It is based on the Yang Yang-class in service with the ROKN. At 60 m and 900t is significantly larger. As with all modern MCMV they...

The quality of the FH-77 which was most appreciated during Kargil was not it's direct fire capability, but its high angle of elevation which allowed deployment of guns close to the 'lee' of the mountains, which allowed for easy crest clearance while providing protection against counter battery bomba...

The P-17A is based on the P-17 hull. Where foreign expertise is being sought is with super structure design and signature management. The Navy was looking at foreign collaboration not for design purposes but to cut build time. The basic design is indeed DGND

It's the frequency of such incidents in Mumbai that underscore the impatience with which the Navy is waiting to move the fleet to Karwar. The Navy had foreseen the crowding of Mumbai way back in the late 1970s as interfering with operations.

Nachiket,
Please note that what is listed on the orbat page is the unit establishment of squadrons. In addition to these aircraft are maintaince and attrition reserves.
Example:
Total number of Mirage inducted: 49 + 10 = 59
Number lost: 7
Balance: 52

Katare I have seen the 30Ks parked in Pune as of last year. In there are probably 12-14 of them. I counted them but don't remember. No buyers were found for the aircraft. At one point Belarus was a potential customer. The aircraft were really flogged and their residual value must be very marginal. S...

Re: Indian Military Aviation
Katare your numbers seem are slightly off. The original plan was for the "upgrade" of the Su-30K/MKs but these were replaced with new build MKI's (at additional cost less the price of used K/Mk airframes) since the K/MK are structurally different. Therefore the total order for MKI is for 2...

Maz can shed more light on this. As I understand it the competition is not so much for design, but for project management and the designation of a manufacturing yard. The design is an in-house (with foreign consultancy) one from GRSE/DND.

There are at least 5 T-55 regiments around that I am aware of. The T-55 regiments have been converting to both T-72 and more recently T-90s, depending on availability. Airlift capability =/= Para drop. Any serious study of the operations in WW2 will indicate quite clearly the huge differences in terrain between Western Europe and the Himalayan region - jagged rocks on one end, and thick forest on the other end. All major para ops have taken place in plains for a r...
