Either you are horribly misinformed, Murthy or you are trying to score debating points or worse, being typical and trying to be argumentative and scoring self goals in the process.

Abdullah is a rare serious person, a war hero, having the correct humanitarian and political instincts, who has always been on the right side in Afghanistan and completely understands the Pakis inside out. I dont much know about his weaknesses, but he is as good as one can expect in Afg.

He is not "doing this" to be like Kejriwal, who is nothing but a mentally unstable nautanki, he is doing this because in both cases he saw the writing on the wall. The elections are stolen from him and he will never be declared a winner and never become President in the current circumstances. It is not that he does not want to be President.

I have no particular liking for him (he is not related to me), except that he is good for his own people, a model of how a muslim should be and most importantly good for India. To just say something - anything for the sake of saying it, and slandering him without thinking and any evidence is a typical self goal that we Indians score all the time.

Abdullah is a serious contender, no doubt.

Also, I do not believe that Gani would be a disaster for India. There is no problem with either of them but we might prefer Abdullah because he was very close to the Sher of Panjshir who was a great friend.

Any doubts regarding intentions of Abdullah are childish.
I wished we could also see more of Amrullah Saleh. He is another hard hitting politician, specializing in pissing of the pakis 8)

Ghani did not start out that way.

But over the course of the election process and even a little before that, the ISI and the Pakis went to work on him. A combination of bribes and threats, mainly threats, have put Ghani squarely in the ISI corner now. He is their man in Afg. That is why the ISI stole the elections for him.

ISI line to him was, either he cries uncle or they will kill him or get him killed. Nobody in Afg will not take an ISI threat seriously. Plain and simple.

Abdullah on the other hand has some sanctuaries in the North, a little away from ISI reach, which could conceivably provide him some protection from the ISI. Although as the Masood assassination demonstrates, no one is completely out of reach of ISI and its underlings. But Abdullah is a combination of somewhat independent personality, a hatred for Paki and having some semblance of protection against the ISI via his sanctuaries and his own armed support base.

Ghani on the other hand, poor chap, being a Pushtoon is fully exposed and completely at the mercy of ISI. He does not even have the protection of the Americans to count on anymore, which Karzai could do and it is questionable how much Iran can or will protect him.

India, of course, has no capability to protect anyone in that theater. We can only spend our scarce money there, that's all.

The NYT fart-ed means US is against Abdullah and had the ISI fix the elections. Plain and simple.

100% accurate, Ramana.

In fact, the US is now peddling the line that there was really no fraud in the elections to speak of and Abdullah should play ball and concede like a good boy. All the "neutral" observers are actually now making noises to certify the election as completely legit. Sounds like US had made a deal with ISI, bribed ISI rather, to allow for an orderly withdrawal from Afg of US troops in exchange for letting ISI's man in charge, on their way out.

Apparently, the US has delivered and is now spreading propaganda that all is well in the elections and it is Abdullah who is playing spoilt sport.

India has completely lost in Afghanistan. If you think about all the actors involved in this US fiasco in Afghanistan over the last 10 years, or let me say over the last 30 years, since Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, no one has been a bigger loser than India. India has lost strategically, tactically, financially and in loss of life and prestige.

But most importantly, this is a another big blow to the Hindus. Until 1970s, Afghanistan had still not turned into a rabidly anti-hindu and totally cave mentality Islamist extremist cesspool. In fact, it acted as kind of a check on Paki insanity and provided some breathing space or respite to the Hindus from a relentless push of the Islamists from all directions. Iran and Arabs pushing through PAki on the West, East Bengal from the East, and Afghan was acting as a minor defense against the Central Asian Islamists pushing through the PAki from the North. Now that little bit of a space that a moderate Afghan provided the Hindus until the 1970s is gone and India is now more vulnerable than ever.

Not only will Afghan now provide strategic depth for PAki and ISlam in general against the Hindus, it will also provide an offensive capability in all those caveman Pushtoon extremists now joining hands with the extremist PAkis to attack India and dismember Kashmir and in the long run further the cause of totally Islamizing India, which the Islamists claim is their unfinished work in Soth and South East Asia, after totally converting Malay, Indonesia and other places in the vicinity. They see total Islamization of India very close at hand, as most of the work is already done, in their view, and now what is required is just a final push. The Hindus are weak and are sitting ducks, just waiting to be pushed over the edge.

India will be the first major and large civilization outside of Arabia to fall to the Islamists and will be a huge feather in the Subhumans' cap, giving them strength, encouragement and tremendous amount of manpower to go after China and finally the West, on their way to world domination and their ultimate goal of "un-civilizing" the entire world population and emptying out the world of any remotely civilized ethos or instincts.

Behead behead behead! Stone, stone, stone! Long live barbarity! Brutality Paindabad! and as for Prophet Muhammed, may peace be on him !

Haramiland Link
KABUL, Afghanistan – A top Afghan election official accused of fraud resigned Monday, raising the chances of a breakthrough in a political deadlock that threatens to derail the country's presidential election as NATO troops withdraw.
Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail, head of the secretariat of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), denied all charges against him but said he was stepping down to save the election process. Election candidate Abdullah Abdullah has boycotted the vote count, accusing the IEC of being biased against him after the run-off vote against his rival Ashraf Ghani a week ago.Now the door is open for us to talk to the (election) commission and talk about the conditions and circumstances that will help the process," Abdullah told reporters after Amarkhail resigned. Abdullah's campaign team on Sunday released audio recordings that they said contained evidence of fraud committed by Amarkhail."For the sake of Afghanistan, for the sake of the election process, I am resigning from my post," Amarkhail said. "I have resigned only to protect the election process, and so that Dr Abdullah Abdullah can put an end to his boycott and resume his relationship with the IEC. "The audio recordings regarding fraud were fake."

Kabul cannot fight terror alone: Envoy - Suhasini Haider, The Hindu
Afghanistan is stepping up its request for military and training assistance from India as the pullout date for NATO forces approaches.

In an exclusive interview to The Hindu , Afghanistan’s Ambassador to India, Shaida Abdali, admitted that “Afghanistan doesn’t have the defence it needs” to fight “proxy-terror groups” and said India and Afghanistan must strengthen their strategic cooperation.

“I am glad to see the new Prime Minister, Mr. Modi, say ‘zero tolerance for terrorism’, but that’s a big word. It will need action and cooperation,” Mr. Abdali said. He, however, ruled out the need for any foreign troops on the ground, including from India.

In December 2013, Afghanistan put in a “wish list” with India, including requests for tanks, helicopters and ground vehicles, which Delhi had politely turned down. Instead India supported infrastructure projects and provided military training to Afghan troops and police forces in India itself. Sources said this was a result of India’s desire not to upset Pakistan with overt military help that may be construed as interference in Afghanistan. In April, the Cabinet Committee on Security had reportedly agreed to fund the supply of small arms to Afghan National Army from Russia in order to avoid this problem. Reacting sharply to these concerns, Ambassador Abdali told The Hindu , “If a third country, like Pakistan, is unhappy to see Afghanistan getting military support from India, I have just one question… Are we arming the Afghan army (so as to) to fight one country? Why are we an exception in the region when everyone wants a strong army and police? Why shouldn’t Afghanistan? I think there is nothing wrong for India to do whatever it can to support Afghanistan. It is Afghanistan seeking that assistance – not India giving it to us.”

India-Afghanistan working on new trade route through Iran - Suhasini Haider, The Hindu.
In an exclusive interview to The Hindu , Afghanistan’s Ambassador to India, Shaida Abdali, has admitted that “Afghanistan doesn’t have the defence it needs” to fight “proxy-terror groups” and said India and Afghanistan must strengthen their strategic cooperation.

On the attack on the Indian consulate in Heart, he said: “There is no ambiguity about the headquarters of LeT. We know where it comes from. Instead of looking where the attackers are coming from, we must see how to tackle them through planning a result-oriented strategy,” he said.

The Afghan envoy confirmed that India and Afghanistan were working at a trilateral transitory agreement with Iran to trade goods via the Iranian port of Chabahar, which India is helping to refurbish, as an alternative to the land route via Pakistan. He also spoke of the negotiations over the TAPI gas pipeline from Turkmenistan, but said security is a pre-requisite for any “economic integration”.

Afghanistan’s second round of elections has run into trouble with frontrunner Dr. Abdullah Abdullah alleging fraud. If the winner is declared on July 22 as scheduled, sources said the new President is likely to invite Prime Minister Modi to his swearing-in in early August, where the Afghanistan government will pick up the thread of its “wish list” with India on security cooperation.

From NightWatch for the night of 27 June 2014
Afghanistan: The election commission announced that the preliminary results of the run-off election on 14 June will be made public on 2 July. It also said no elections will be repeated.

During this Watch, sources in Kabul reported eight demonstrations by up to 27,000 people, protesting the election commission's announcement. As yet no violence has been reported.

Comment: The announcement contained no reference to ballot box stuffing. Presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah's organization continues to refuse to cooperate with the election commission. Abdullah apparently expects to lose the election because of the voter fraud.
Somehow, I feel that Abdullah would still win. As an aside, Afghanistan, a poor country without strong democratic roots and wracked by warlordism, terrorism, logistical difficulties, poor law&order situation etc, must not employ the luxury of a second run-off election in case the first round did not produce results. They must have a simpler mechanism than that thereby avoiding a costly second-round.

Visa policy for Afghan nationals liberalized - Business Line
Afghan nationals will soon be allowed to stay in India on visa/resident permit up to 2 years at a time.

“The Government is introducing a new liberal visa policy for Afghan nationals to stay in India on humanitarian grounds for two years with effect from July 01, 2014. The new policy further streamlines procedures being implemented in the current visa policy for citizens of Afghanistan,” said a Home Ministry release here on Monday.

As per the broad elements of the policy, Afghan nationals may be allowed to stay in India on stay visa/resident permit up to two years at a time and exemption from police reporting will be granted for Afghan nationals, up to the age of 12 years or those above 65 years of age.

Also, there would be liberal provisions in relation to exemption from the requirement of police reporting under various categories, including for Afghan students, medical patients, short-term visitors, businessmen, scholars, eminent persons etc., the release added.

“The amenities at Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Delhi, have been upgraded for the Afghan nationals visiting FRRO office. A system of biometric enrolment and photography would be introduced to ensure that such facilities are not misused by unscrupulous elements,” the release added.

While many Afghans come to India for studies and medical treatment, a large number of them are displaced people. According to UN refugee agency UNHCR, which conducts registration and refugee status determination, mostly for arrivals from Afghanistan and Myanmar, there are over 24,000 refugees who are protected and assisted in India.

Who is making all these policy decisions on liberal visa regime for afghans. Is it the old babus who are still sticking around or is the new govt doing this. If so, how different is it from UPA which was doing the same. We all understand the need to get a foothold in Afghanistan to counter pakis and get access to central asia. But I fail to understand this dole of liberal visas for all the countries in the neighborhood with whom we want better relations. They just did the same with Bangladesh where the MEA announced multiple entry permits to people under 13 and above 65.

This whole idea that liberal visa regimes and people to people contact enables strategic depth for us in those countries is misplaced. The people of India want nothing to do with Afghans or bangladeshis. If the GOI wants to improve its strategic depth in those nations, go ahead and provide some incentives to indian private or state owned companies to invest in afghanistan or bangladesh and improve their economy. The GOI has no business inviting them to our soil with open arms while claiming that they will curtail illegal immigration. Most of the people who come into India will valid visas end up staying here much longer after their visa expires. India will not have a system to track them effectively for the next 50 years. So best way is to close the doors.

Until and unless India has a system for detecting people who overstay their visas, we will always have issues. And AFAIK, I have never seen any country that is perfectly good at tracking foreign nationals overstaying their visas unless it is a small, very networked country.

The Wahabis came into the picture after the late 60s as far as the subcontinent is concerned. The real inspiration for the Pakis are the Afghans and the other ones are the Turks. During the Khilafat movement the Ali brothers asked Muslims to move to Afghanistan to live in the Dar ul islam.

Moving to Turkey the Turkish army template of whiskey drinking Generals keeping the bloody civilians on their toes was copied to the smallest detail by Ayub who also picked up very good tips on how to hood wink the americans. It is not a coincidence that the Turkish generals are going out of fashion at the same time as Erdogan bringing the Generals to heel in Turkey. This is happening as we speak in Turkey, the US is not only watching quietly but also cheering the transition and are actually unhappy at the Army push back as happened in Egypt where Sisi threw the MB out of business.

Hence why do we think the US will do anything in Pakistan when the Corp commaders completely come out the close with their finger on the nuke button.

This source of Paki delusions need to be delved in more detail.

From NightWatch for the night of July 7, 2014
Afghanistan: Today the election commission announced the preliminary results from the run-off election on 14 June. The officials said 8 million people voted, from a pool of 13.5 million registered voters.

Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai obtained 4,485,888 votes, which represents 56.4% of the votes.

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah obtained 3,461,639 votes which represents 43.6% of the ballots cast.

The head of the election commission, Nuristani, cautioned that the results are preliminary and do not signify that a party is the winner. He advised against celebrations and warned that the result could change.

He also confirmed that vote rigging occurred. He said, "We cannot ignore the technical problems and fraud during the election process. Some governors and government officials were involved in fraud."

He promised a more extensive investigation before the final results are announced. Final results are scheduled to be announced on 22 July.

Abdullah's reaction. A spokesman for Dr. Abdullah's National Coalition said the Coalition rejected the preliminary results because they include ballots that the commission knows are fraudulent. Abdullah has filed complaints about fraud occurring at 7,000 of the 23,000 polling places. His spokesman called the results a coup against the voters of Afghanistan.

Comment: The results do not look credible for multiple reasons. The election commission admitted it was surprised by the number of ballots cast in the run-off because the turnout was higher than the commission estimated. In fact, 2 million more votes were cast in the run-off than in the first round. That is a counter-intuitive result that signifies voter fraud.

Ashraf Ghani is the candidate of the Pashtuns and Uzbeks. His vice presidential candidate is the famous Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum. In the first election he obtained just over 2 million votes which represented 31.5 % of the ballots. He carried 9 of the 34 provinces, based on Pashtun and Uzbek participation. In some of those nine provinces in the south, fewer than 11,000 people voted. Pashtun voter turnout was low, which is normal for Pashtuns.

Abdullah is the candidate of the north, including Tajiks, Hazaras, Panjshiris and smaller tribes. He polled 2.9 million votes, or 45% of the total ballots. He carried 15 provinces, most by a wide margin over Ghani.

For the preliminary results to be accurate, a sea change had to occur, not just in voter attitudes, but in the tribal composition of Afghanistan and in its political culture between April and June. Ghani more than doubled his vote in the run-off, but Abdullah increased by only 17%.

The percentage of votes for Abdullah actually declined. That implies that large numbers of non-Pashtuns switched to vote for a Pashtun or that Pashtuns in unprecedented numbers voted in the run-off but not in the primary election.

Tribal politics do not work that way in Afghanistan for two reasons. Non-Pashtuns disdain Pashtuns for having supported the Taliban, most of whose leaders are Pashtuns. Non-Pashtuns form the majority of the population and they don't vote for Pashtuns. President Karzai has been an exception because he was the US' man.

Secondly, Pashtuns don't vote. In the primary election, about 750,000 votes were cast in the 13 predominately Pashtun provinces. That is a little over ten percent of the votes cast, but Pashtuns constitute between 40% and 45% of the total population.

To achieve the results announced today, a half million more people voted for Abdullah, but nearly 2.5 million more voted for Ghani. The numbers for Ghani make no sense without ballot box stuffing.

Abdullah apparently knew the election was being stolen, which is why he started decrying voter fraud almost immediately in mid-June. The danger is that this could lead eventually to a renewal of civil war.

One of the Taliban victory scenarios is to take control of Afghanistan through democratic elections. Pashtuns have almost always governed in Kabul and they intend to do so again. Violence seems unavoidable.

There is only one solution. Let the civil war happen. Afghanistan is such a sharply divided country that it cannot simply exist in its current form. Let the pashtuns and uzbeks have their land and be ruled by taliban and let a peaceful progressive country emerge in the north with Tajiks, Hazaras, Panjshiris and smaller tribes.

And insha-allah, the pashtuns and uzbeks will storm fata and nwfp to partition pakis again.

India needs to ensure only one thing, Gilgit and Baltistan should under no circumstances be part of remaining pakistan or pashtunistan, it either needs to be with India or with northern alliance or an independent country.

Folks, the stealing of the elections by the Massa/ISI/Islamist nexus is complete. Abdullah Abdullah has no more options left, as he has been warned by Kerry Kerry and Obama Obama.

Even if Abdullah Abdullah loses is it really a lose for India? Ashraf Ghani's VP candidate is Abdul Rashid Dostum, the guy who famously stuffed 1000's surrendered Taliban fighters into shipping containers to be sent to their death. IMO as long as we the Pashto elected politicians trying to avoid being hung from goalposts and non-Pashto warlords trying to preserve the hold on their fiefs we should have a decent hand.

Per Carlotta Gall, there was a tactical understanding between the ISI and Dostum at that time, the Pakis killed in the containers were LVTs. better off dead than alive.

Meanwhile.

.@AshrafGhani is first Brookings scholar (Non-Resident Sr Fellow in @BrookingsFP) to be a serious candidate for presidency of his country.
Kinda makes sense why US thinks Ghani is more suitable for pushing US agenda in this part of the world.

What is LVT?

Ghani is an Ahmedzai? Is that a Durrani or a Ghilzai?

He is a Brookingzai and a Worldbankzai. An International Technocrat who, unlike Hamid Karzai has been quite effectively deracinated from ancestral tribal loyalties. His loyalties are to US Dept of State (late Holbrooke, recently Hillary and now Kerry) whose loyalties are to Pakistan.

Nice play on the zais. But to survive as king he has to be a Durrani.
