Kabul seizes 10 tons of explosives, links haul to Pakistan

KABUL: Afghan security forces detained five militants with massive quantities of explosive materials and linked them to Pakistan-based groups, an intelligence official said on Saturday.

“It could have caused large-scale bloodshed,” National Directorate of Security (NDS) spokesman Shafiqullah Tahiri told a news conference.

“Three Pakistani terrorists and two of their Afghan collaborators who placed the explosives under bags of potatoes in a truck were caught.”

The 10 tons of potassium, used to make bombs, were stuffed into 400 bags and hidden under potatoes in the back of a Pakistan-registered truck on Kabul’s outskirts, Tahiri said……………..

The Bury Park locality of Luton where those arrested are reported to have lived is infested with Mohammaddens of Pakistani origin and so I expect that a connection to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan will emerge to this aborted act of terrorism sooner rather than later:

Luton terror suspects being questioned

Anti terrorist officers from Scotland Yard took part in raids on addresses in Luton early this morning.

All the raids were on houses in and around the Bury Park area of the town.

With the Olympic Games in London just weeks away, the five men were arrested on suspicion that they were planning acts of terrorism ..............

Pakistani jihadists reported in northern Mali
Timbuktu mayor Hallé Ousman confirmed the news during an exclusive telephone interview with Magharebia.
"There are actually many Pakistani nationals in Timbuktu, as well as others from many other nationalities, the mayor said. "I personally saw them today going around streets, neighbourhoods and markets. However, they haven't yet started actual communication and direct conversation with residents."

"As to their mission, it became clear to residents several weeks ago," Ousman added. "It is represented in training the new recruits who al-Qaeda and other armed groups in town are enlisting."

"The situation has become very dangerous," he concluded. "In Timbuktu, we refuse that our city be turned into a scene for the terrorist acts that foreign groups are engaged in, given that they threaten our stability and make our sons susceptible to deviation."

Kabul accuses Pakistan over suicide attack
Afghan authorities on Tuesday said “regional spy agencies” were behind a rare suicide attack targeting Shia Muslims that killed more than 80 people in a veiled reference to Pakistani intelligence.

Attorney General Eshaq Aloko said two men had been arrested over the December attack, which struck a crowd of worshippers on Ashura in Kabul.

President Hamid Karzai blamed Pakistani sectarian extremist outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi for the atrocity, which was unprecedented on such a holy day, and urged Islamabad to act.

Aloko said the attack was planned in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar, by “regional spy agencies” aimed at “provoking sectarian violence”.

“Although the Jhangvi group claimed responsibility, it was masterminded by some spy agencies in our neighbouring countries,” Aloko said.

Afghans blame Pakistan for fuelling much of the violence in their country, where the Taliban are leading a 10-year insurgency against the government and 130,000 Western troops.

The prosecutor said one of those arrested came from Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, which borders Pakistan’s militant-infested tribal belt, and was paid 10,000 Pakistani rupees ($100) to bring two suicide attackers to Kabul.

“One attacker blew himself up, the second fled the area,” Aloko said.

He said the two arrested men both confessed over the plot and the case was now closed.

The explosion happened at the entrance to a riverside shrine, where hundreds of Shias had gathered.

The Taliban denied responsibility for the attack, the deadliest in the Afghan capital in three years.

“The case is closed for us now. We have completed our investigation, and the case will be sent to the court,” Aloko said.

The Christian Science Monitor reports that that the Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s Army controlled intelligence agency the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI / ISID) is involved in fomentimg Mohammadden Jihadi Terrorism in Afghanistan.
Taliban attacks on US bases in Afghanistan: enabled by Pakistani forces?

The volume of explosives used in attacks on US military bases in Afghanistan in recent days fuels concern that Pakistani security services are taking a stronger hand in backing insurgent groups.

By Anna Mulrine, Staff writer / June 21, 2012
Washington

A recent spate of attacks on US military bases in Afghanistan points to a resilient Taliban with a steady supply of arms. It is a supply stream flowing from Pakistan – one that US troops, try as they might, are proving unable to interrupt.

Equally troubling for the Pentagon, analysts warn that these attacks serve as growing evidence that Pakistani security services (ISI) is stepping up its support of insurgent groups to jockey for position ahead of the scheduled 2014 departure of US combat troops from the country. …………………..

The sheer volume of explosives involved in the attack points to ISI links with an insurgency “that’s proving to be a continuous challenge” for US forces in eastern Afghanistan, Mr. Dressler says.

In eastern Afghan provinces such as Khost, Taliban-affiliated insurgent groups, such as the Haqqani network, maintain safe haven and logistical lines that run all the way to Pakistan – and use these places to project their power into neighboring provinces even closer to Kabul.

“The fact that these guys can move trucks full of explosives across the border” is troubling, Dressler adds. “By not taking action, Pakistani forces “are signaling their tacit approval of this stuff.”

These sorts of behaviors – including “increased collusion” between the ISI and Pakistani-based insurgent groups – “are likely to increase” with the drawdown of US forces, Dressler warns, “unless you can get into these places [in eastern Afghanistan] and go on the offensive like we did in Helmand and Kandahar [provinces of southern Afghanistan]." …………………

How can the connection be concealed, denied or swept under carpet when the perpetrators and their planners were overwhlmingly Pakistani ?

When the police arrested 21 persons in London, Birmingham and Thames Valley and claimed they were South Asians we immediately knew they should be only Pakistanis because such is their reputation. The plot reeked of the aborted Bojinka Plot in 1995, again by two Pakistanis Ramzi Youssef and his devilish uncle Khalid Sheikh Muhammad (KSM). Apart from a large number of British Pakistanis being involved in the plot, funding, training and planning also happened from Pakistan. The Judge Richard Henriques also said that "the ultimate control of this conspiracy lay in Pakistan", saying the plot was run, monitored and funded from there. There was evidence that the gang was frequently in communication with Al-Qaeda-linked figures in Pakistan.

Bulgarian media have reportedly named the suicide bomber who blew up the bus with Israeli tourists on Wednesday, killing seven. The terrorist is alleged to be Mehdi Ghezali, an Algerian-Swedish Islamist who spent two years in Guantanamo Bay.

The story was broken by Times of Israel newspaper, who cited local Bulgarian media sources.

But later the story grew murkier, with ABC reporting that Bulgarian officials denied that Ghezali was behind the attack. Swedish agency TT says it has received similar refutals from security services in Stockholm.

Neither country has issued an independently verified statement.

Previously, local police matched up airport CCTV footage with the remnants near the bus carrying Israeli tourists that was destroyed in the explosion. The likely suicide bomber was carrying a US driving license bearing the name Jacque Felipe Martin that authorities believe to be a forgery.

Mehdi Ghezali is a 33 year-old Islamist, who was arrested in Pakistan in 2001 and subsequently spent two years in detention in Guantanamo. When he was sent back to Sweden, the local government refused to press charges against him. He was arrested again by Pakistani authorities on the Afghanistan border in 2009, but once again set free upon extradition back to his homeland.

Actually, there might be a logical explanation for the chapati flour in the recipe.
According to the Times of Israel article on the same incident:
They downloaded a manual called “Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of your Mom” from the Internet and, following its instructions, began gathering material for a homemade bomb.
Now, a few months before, there was an article about how British Intel had penetrated certain websites and changed a few recipes around.
British intelligence used cupcake recipes to ruin al-Qaida website
The officers, understood to be based at Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham, attacked an online jihadist magazine in English called Inspire, devised by supporters of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

A pdf file containing fairy cake recipes was inserted into Inspire to garble most of the 67 pages of the online magazine, including instructions on how to "Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom".
Looks like the recipe the couple were using might have been contributed by a true TFCTME (Tall, Fair, Chicken Tikka Masala Eating) Brit, which would explain the chapati flour :rotfl: .

But, the Punjab Government of Nawaz Sharif has made allocations under its budget openly for JuD claiming it was a Muslim charity organization. Musharraf had also repeatedly claimed so. So, what is NYT complaining about JuD collecting money during Ramadan ?

The above cited report also refers to FIF (Falah-i-Insaniyat Foundation). Reports in c. 2004 suggested JuD had a newer name, Idara Khidmat-e-Khalq (Humanitarian Relief Department). There is also another name under which it re-surfaced in Swat providing services to those affected by the Army operation in c. 2009, Falah-i-Insaniyat (Welfare of the Humanity). It uses the JuD flag and its Emir, Hafiz Abdur Rauf had earlier headed the Jamaat-ud-Dawa’s charitable wing, the Idara Khidmat-e-Khalq. Falah-i-Insaniyat has also been collecting funds for LeT under the banner Tanzeem-e-Azadi-e-Kashmir (Organisation for the Liberation of Kashmir) or also known as Tehreek-Azaadi-e-Kashmir (TAK).
