Islamic Fundamentalism in Kashmir
A canard is now being spread past few years by the secessionist-terrorists and their sympathizers that in 1990 Kashmiri Pandits left Kashmir willingly, having been "tricked" by then Jammu and Kashmir Governor Jagmohan. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The fact is that Kashmiri Pandits were driven from their homeland after a campaign of intimidation and harassment was launched against them by the military-wing of the secessionists. Kashmiri Pandits were forced from their hearths and homes at the point of gun. The objective of this ethnic cleansing was to create a minority-free Kashmir valley where the goal of Islamization could be easily forced on the ordinary people. The books and articles below will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the genesis of the current political situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

This website aims to tell the story of Kashmir as it was and what has become of it now. Contrary to the misinformation currently being propagated, India did not "annex" Kashmir. At the time of independence in 1947 from British rule and the subsequent partition of the country into theocratic Pakistan and secular India, the Hindu Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir had the option to join India, Pakistan, or remain independent. He contemplated the latter option, but after Pakistan invaded Kashmir hoping to preempt such a decision, he decided to accede to India. This accession was ratified by Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, head of the largest political party (the National Conference) representing the Muslim majority of the state. The Sheikh did so because he felt that the interests of Kashmiri Muslims, who practice the secular Sufi-Islamic way of life, would be best served under the protection of the Indian constitution.

The following pages will show you a glimpse of the history, culture, and the current plight of Kashmiri Pandits. You will understand the goals of the bigoted religious terrorists in Kashmir whose vision of Azadi (independence) is to use religious dogma to exclude women, religious minorities, and secular-minded people from every kind of freedom in social and political life.

Kashmir militants give up fight and head home
Twenty years after they took up arms to fight Indian rule in the Kashmir valley, hundreds of local insurgents are now returning to their homes after renouncing militancy.
The reasons are diminishing support from the Pakistani government, a realisation that the "Kashmir jihad" is going nowhere and a promise of amnesty by the Indian government.

"It's no use staying on here," says former militant Mohammad Ahsan who lives in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir.

He is now preparing to leave for his home in Srinagar valley on the Indian side.

"The jihad is over, and poverty is catching on to us; it's better to live on your own land and around your own people than in virtual exile where one day you'll be forced to beg for a living,"
says Mr Ashan.

He has managed to put together 130,000 Pakistani rupees ($1,500; £960) to buy air tickets to the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, for himself, his wife and two children. From there he will cross into India to reach Srinagar.
Beginning in 1988, thousands of Kashmiri youths from the Indian side crossed over the LoC into Pakistan to train in guerrilla warfare, arm themselves and then go back to fight Indian forces in their homeland.

They kept Kashmir on the boil for a decade during the 1990s, but were increasingly frustrated when Pakistani groups, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Al-Badr and Harkatul Mujahideen started to gain ascendancy in the "Kashmir jihad".

These groups brought with them greater resources to eclipse local groups, and professed foreign religious ideologies that were less tolerant of local sensibilities.

Kanishka ac ouple of important quotes in the article.

Kashmir militants give up fight and head home
They fly to Kathmandu on a Pakistani passport. From there they cross into India and reach Kashmir, where the returning men report to the local police to confirm their arrival.

"The Kathmandu route has two advantages; it is familiar to former militants and their 'handlers' who used it in the past to smuggle militants into India, and it is away from the public glare and therefore suitable to keep this exodus under wraps," he says.

The insurgents' departure comes amid reports of drastic cuts in the money which militant circles say the Pakistani security establishment used to pay them for their activities. Its all about the money honey. I suspect it is the same with Maoists, ULFA or any other uniformed group of criminals.
To those who say a proseperous Pakistan is in our INterest, during late 80's early 90's Paki economy was booming, after 2006-07 it has reached Pakistaniyat, what happenned.
According to these circles, the practice of disbursing funds to various groups for operations inside Indian-administered Kashmir was stopped by the military government of former president Pervez Musharraf in 2006.

In recent months, they say, Pakistan has halved the funds which it still pays to these groups to meet their establishment expenses - such as office rent, stationery, transport, fuel or food.

It seems tourist levels have touched an all time high.

Tourists have been sleeping in their cars.

Getting baked in 43 degree heat of plains here and people are wearing thick woolens in most parts of J&K. Even I want to get away from Dilli till November. There are some very beautiful places in Doda, Kishtwarh, Bhaderwah and Poonch. Leh has always been my dream destination though :)

Hulaku saar,
Hasn't the state govt. rented a large number of hotels for Durbar move employees ?

I think that rush is due to Amarnath pilgrims rather than tourists. Hardly anyone I know is interested in visiting Kashmir.

Do you mean Sanasar or Saruinsar ? Saruinsar is famous for it's lake with an island. There is a salt water spring at some distance too

@ jamwal

I dont really know how much the state has booked for Durbar move employees.

But there is a great rush of tourists to the Valley. Check out the flight rates and you will know. The rush for Amarnath usually starts in August so right now the rush is mainly tourists who want to have a glimpse of the "Paradise".

The two liquor shops in Srinagar are doing great business it seems.

And Sanasar Lake and Patnitop aren't even in Kashmir. ;)

Ah.. I remember a road trip we made around 5 years back. Our destination for the day was Sri Nagar, but we could not make it. It was getting dark and the Army patrols were forming up. And on their advice we decided to halt at Patni Top. The other option was Ramban. Sri Nagar, if I am not mistaken is approx. 100km away from Patni Top.

Recently i was looking at a flight mag with lots of pics of Ladhak/ Leh. They showed shanty towns with plenty of mosques/ madrassa like features. If we are preserving the demographics of J&K by imposing Art 370, is it not fair that Buddhist majority areas of J & K like Ladhak/ Leh too are protected from external ingress?

harbans ji, Buddhists in Leh have been demanding UT status for quite sometime now.

The state should be broken up. What's the logic behind keeping Jammu and Ladakh under the valley's rule? Btw, the Buddhists are in majority in Leh only (~85%), in Kargil district, Ms are ~85.

Will being a UT, prevent people settling and mosques and madrassas opening up in Leh/ Ladhak? I am not sure.

They can pass a law similar to 370 and even if it is challenged in court, the UT can just ignore it/protest it. Basically, they will have much more control on the ground, so to say.

svenkat, the state being broken up has to give permission to get broken up as per constitution. of course, if the central gov wanted to do it, it could find a way. But that is the excuse given out usually.

2,000 jawans took own lives in J&K, says study
There has been a sharp rise in suicides in the Army and other para-military forces deployed in Jammu and Kashmir and a recent research carried by a leading sociologist of the valley has revealed that 1,500 to 2,000 soldiers have committed suicide in the last two decades.

The research by Prof Bashir Ahmad Dabla, head of the Sociology department of Kashmir University, says that a majority of the soldiers who committed suicides were married.

While there has been no exact number of total suicides in the state available as no official survey has been carried out in this regard, unofficial estimates vary from 7,000 to 20,000 in 20 years. However, Prof Dabla’s research carried out from 2009-2011 said armed forces share of suicides was around 2,000 cases.

“Since official records in this regard have remained confidential, the authentic figures and credible estimates are not possible easily. However, the relevant information from the local press suggests the number could be close to 2,000,” he told Deccan Herald.

The suicides, Prof Dabla said, were committed by personnel of the Army, soldiers from BSF, CRPF, ITBP and CISF and they belonged to all regions of the country. “However, there was a slightly higher number of suicides from the south Indian states,” he added. The common method of suicides, the research reveals, was shooting oneself with service rifle.

“In certain such cases, the person committing suicide not only shoot himself but also killed his colleagues and senior officers also,” it added.

One of the reasons of suicides in armed forces, the research says “was denial on the part of authorities to sanction leave.”

“The second apparent reason reported in the press was that they often felt depressed and tension after counter insurgency operations which involved abuse, excesses, atrocities and violation of basic human rights against civilians.”

The third reason, the researcher found was that despite harsh and unbearable conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, the armed forces were not provided all necessary facilities needed for their safety and security.

“The fourth apparent reason reported was the verbal inter-personal altercation between various members of the armed forces on material and non-material issues which often led to the attempt of committing suicides,” the research added.
Massive numbers being quoted!

Exactly, Kashmir is the problem we must segregate it and then tackle the problem. In the Kashmir brouhaha why should the desires of the people of Jammu and Ladakh suffer ???

More the reason why article 370 must go and yes if GOI wants to do it nobody can stop it from doing so.

Nope, it doesnt. The constitution doesnt demand that. All it constitutionally needs is a simple majority of parliament. All it requires is the state legislatures's view on the bill. (The views can be negative).

In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Muhammad Yasin Malik, Chairman, J&K Liberation Front; Prof Sheikh Shaukat Hussain, Law Professor, Kashmir University; Dr Mustafa Kamal, Leader, National Conference; Dr Jitendra Singh, Natl Executive Member & Chief Spokesperson J&K, BJP, and Lt Gen (Retd) B S Jaswal, former Army Commander, Northern Command -- discuss the issue of thin attendance at the Hurriyat's protest march in Srinagar's Lal Chowk and whether it is a wake up call for them and whether the secessionist movement is losing its steam.

A protest rally to commemorate those killed in the summer agitation of 2010 was carried out by the Hurriyat group at Srinagar's Lal Chowk yesterday (June 11). But, there were hardly any takers as a handful of 40 to 50 people joined the rally led by top Hurriyat leaders like Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan and Zafar Akbar Bhat. In the absence of local people's participation, the protest march fell flat leaving the secessionist leaders red-faced.

The peace loving Pakistan army sends its love by killing two of our soldiers as an advance gift in exchange of Siachen.
http://chhindits.blogspot.com/2012/06/p ... 5-div.html

Meanwhile Omar Abdullah saab talks of treating Siachen not as a different issue. He also was seen complaining in twitter about killing of a NC worker - couldnt find news about it.

@abdullah_omar
I suppose because Abdul Rehman Ganai was a NC activist his killing today is not worthy of the outrage we often see here in Twitteristan.

I guess this makes BK a hawk again!

Time to revisit Article 370
It is, however, Nehru’s faulty premise that has seeped into the thinking of Indian liberals, that nation-building is a morality tale, an exercise in ethical norms. Actually, as history shows, nations are sewn together, often from disparate parts, by craft, graft, and bloodletting. It is dirty, usually violent business in which people who would otherwise have remained separate were dragged kicking and screaming into the national fold, and no nonsense about it. Again, ask the American Indians who, because they resisted, were exterminated. By reinforcing the notion of their distinctness, Article 370 has perennially fuelled discontent and insurgency, stoked dreams of independence in Kashmir, ill-served India, and should be done away with. It is best that the Kashmiris be told that once however in, there’s no out. If the Hurriyat and that ilk don’t accept it; they can go take a hike. Better still, they should be placed in a tub alongside Arundhati Roy — who seceded from the Indian republic (remember, she threatened to do that?), towed out to sea, and there left to contemplate their virtuous selves. Outside the 12-mile territorial limit.

Wow...Summer used to be the peak season for these KM free loaders for their so called "infitida" or whatever crap they called their protests. Now it's middle of June and even the protest march to remember their "martyrs" during the last 4 years gets no attention :rotfl:

Evil Hindus from India under the guise of tourists have destroyed the moral fabric of pious Kashmiri infitida. Kashmiris now care more for haraam money of Indians rather than lives of their own and holy Islamic cause :((

If what you are saying is true - this is good news and its game over for TSPians. They tried to use Islam to win over the population because they thought if it worked in AfPak - it will work in J&K.

Sir, this is open knowledge. I presume its already released in the press. Besides Jihadi's will know and so will the people across the border. And also, when we release such information - its always after the event. Real national sec decisions are never out in the open and are always released after the event/plan is implemented/finish.

jamwal-saar, a lot of my classmates back in school and college are posting photos of visits to J&K in the last two months in FB. These are folks who usually have wider choices and are not exactly jingo types who want to prove a point by visiting badlands.

So what gives? Are there any incentives that the state govt is giving out to tour operators? Am glad this is happening - plan to come kitted up for some action by next winter 8)

I'll not be so optimistic about the KMs so soon. UNless Kashmiri Pandits get their lives back in valley, KMs will always remain the guilty party

Hnair saar,
Even I'm surprised. As Hulaku jii said, hotels are overflowing with tourists and Amarnath yatra hasn't even started probably due to bad weather. Base camp is meters deep in snow still in this month according to reports
. I attended a Tourism Expo 3-4 months back in New Delhi and J&K pavilion had a fair bit of presence. Perhaps people are getting bored of usual hill stations and need a change. It'll be much easier to reach Srinagar with work on construction of railway line and widening of national highway getting completed soon. Lack of terrorist related violence might also be a factor. Laddakh must also be enjoying the same tourist boom. A lot of people I know I planning to go or already have been there. Some of the tourists perhaps stay in Srinagar on their way to Laddakh too. Helps a little with acclimatising and rest before the difficult road journey

‘Kashmir issue key to regional stability'
One of the senior-most Pakistani generals on Friday said regional stability would remain a distant dream as long as the Kashmir issue remained unresolved.

This articulation of the centrality of Kashmir to peace and stability in the region was made by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Khalid Shameem Wynne, while maintaining that Pakistan posed no threat to any country.

Addressing the graduation ceremony of the National Security and War Course at the National Defence University, Gen. Wynne said: “We seek nothing beyond secure frontiers and pose no threat to any country and will accept no pressure for standing up for our principles.”

Dwelling on peace and stability in the region, he added: “I must also point out that as long as the regional disputes, specially Kashmir, remains unresolved, stability will remain a distant dream, we must therefore continue for a just solution of the Kashmir dispute as it is only fair to all the people who dwell in this region.
In Sum siachen is not going to help them a bit.

Avtar Singh, the former Indian Army officer accused of killing Kashmiri human rights activist Jaleel Andrabi, had sneaked in the US after his plea for asylum was denied in Canada, where he had fled from India in 2003.

Singh killed his wife and two sons and grievously injured his another son, before turning the gun on himself last week in Fresno County in California.

Canadian authorities had let Indian officials know Singh was living in Canada in 2004, according to court documents. The Singhs lived in Canada with relatives for two years and applied for asylum, but their claim was denied, according to Singh’s US asylum documents provided to Associated Press by his immigration consultant.

After his cover was blown, Singh and his family crossed illegally into the US and settled in Fresno County, where Singh filed an asylum case for himself in 2011.

“He told me, ‘My job in India was to eliminate terrorists who were against the Indian government. I was good at that, they never found the bodies when I did it,’” said Stephens, Singh’s immigration consultant.

In his asylum application, Singh said he did not kill Kashmiri activist Jaleel Andrabi, but knew who did. “I am being made a scapegoat,” he said, adding that he would be killed if he returned to India.
This Jaleel Andrabi must have been a very powerful person if it caused a IA officer to be hounded out of the country and fear for his life if within the country!!!

Not sure if he as even charge-sheeted but sad to see all DDM outlets calling him a "murderer"/fugitive etc when there were only accusations and not even a formal warrant against him.

Jamwal ji, as I told you before the Amarnath rush is usually the maximum around Raksha Bandhan so the crowd of tourists right now has nothing to do with the Yatra. Obviously when the Chari Mubarak starts then there will be even more tourist-pilgrims.

Even the hoteliers in Manali and Shimla (I know quite a few) are feeling the Kashmir pinch this time. I assume it has a lot to do with new generation of tourists who have not been to Kashmir but have been enamoured by the tales of the "Paradise on Earth" and this year they felt it was their chance to visit as you never know what happens next in the Valley. Its like making hay while the sun shines.

As for Ladakh it has been booming since many years and you can see that when you walk around the main bazaar. All my Ladakhi friends are now Guest House owners and some even work as location specialists because there are always film crews in Ladakh. The well heeled $$ carrying foreign tourists have always flown in, and not affected by events in Kashmir. The Ladakhis unlike their Balti and Zanskari cousins are now affluent.

I personally look forward to the opening of the Chaddar road from Nimu to Padam so that Zanskar opens up to the world, though I guess then it wont remain the last Shangrila like it like the Mustang valley in Nepal.

Family back in India just got back from Kashmir trip. They were raving about the place, and the fact that some of them saw snow for the first time. I was concerned when they told me the plan to head for the valley. They said "don't worry, nobody will throw a grenade at us." Then they came back and said "see, it was just like we said - the place is safe." Are things changing for the better finally?

Forgot to mention. My family and friends cavorted on the banks of the Indus river. Maybe I heard wrong on the phone (didn't get all the details), but they said they were at a place where the Indus river disappeared into Pakistan. Is this Kargil? They specifically mentioned that some army officers said that the Kargil heights were close by.

Seems like the officials are confident about allowing tourists go all the way to the border. Great developments, if so. Pehelgam and Sonemarg were among the other places visited.

There still seem to be soldiers every few hundred meters, but the Amarnath yatra is expected to go well, what with the security provided. That's what my family said.

There was a lot of tourist flow to the valley till the late 80s. The onlee way things can change for the better for good is a permanent demographic change.

Too early to say.... remember same sentences being thrown around in 2009 and then we all saw what happened next summer.

As Advait says, there is no other way other than demographic change since the KMs are only getting more and more radicalized as the days go by ( and not the reverse)

Situation remains fragile - Whenever pakis get screwed by Amreekis they try to take out their rage on Yindoos. It happened after the Taliban govt fell and they seem to be trying to ramp it up again. Ceasefire is being routinely violated on LOC and it looks like terrorists are being pushed in. Just today's news -

Srinagar Five CRPF personnel were injured on Sunday in a grenade attack by militants on their picket in Sopore town in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
Militants hurled a grenade at the CRPF picket in Sopore, wounding five jawans, a police spokesman said.

No militant outfit had claimed responsibility for the attack so far, he said.
