Its atrocious that the state is using such brutal police power against democratic protestors merely protesting for better living conditions, better jobs, clean water and 3 square meals a day. Its nothing but a criminal crackdown on a grassroots movement. I dont think India should legitimize this regime by participating in theh 2012 Olympics which is an ostentatious display of state wealth while rampant poverty and unrest exists across the country.

Recent history shows that the Olympics ends up bankrupting host cities and countries a couple of years after its done with and the bill comes up for payment (in which, typically the costs overshoot projected revenues by a mile+).

Sorry, but i disagree. There are opportunists and random leftist anarchists, but be it the "october revolution" in France or the current riots Britain, the catalysts for these riots have been immigrants - esp. the muslim immigrants and african immigrants. Multiculturalism works when you can assimilate the new generation of immigrants into your social fold, but when that does not happen,it'll lead to a break down of that delicate equilibrium. If native Europeans want to survive another 100 years in their own countries then they'll have to turn the calendar back by 100 years and start taking the gloves off. Those who refuse to accept the values of their host nation should just leave or be thrown out.

Financial inequity exists in all societies and that is no excuse for rioters. This type of anarchy needs to be quelled effectively. I feel sorry for the police retreating with just shields.

I think a "shoot at sight" order would bring some sanity back to the looters. Hope the British government takes the tough decision and puts these scum in their place.

I have spent a limited time in Europe and my observation about blacks is this : the majority of blacks from Caribbean nations do seem well assimilated into core European customs and values, but the blacks from African nations are as Pakis as Pakis. Add to this a rampant inflow of muslim immigrants from Turkey,N.Africa,South Asia since 90s and you have a problem that post-WW2 European society just doesn't know how to deal with. Yesterday it was France,today it is England and soon we'll see similar images across Europe. Because the riots itself started when they shot dead a black person with a gun, which the police admitted yesterday "they should have handled the incident better".

Have you ever been to a big football match?? There are almost riots in any big game like cardiff v bristol. People throw bricks at supporters/cars etc. Supporters are by and large whites on benefits.

I am part of the same generation that is rioting and I've spent most of my schooling life in various parts of the UK.
Take the areas of looting/rioting.
Lewisham, clapham, brixton - blacks
Croydon - mixed/blacks/white/SL tamils
East ham - quite mixed.

Birmingham - mix of black/paki's/ and white.
Liverpool - predominantly white.

Look, this is fun for them and fits in with the whole gangster/gang culture in the UK (common from the age of 13 till 21/22 and then people grow up a bit, a lot of people stay stuck in there depending on the area/economic background). Its "cool" to be rioting and smashing up a police car for fun.
If you don't grow up here, then you don't really understand it... The media doesn't understand how these kids think.

This is just the ever present UK class struggle raising it's head again. Labour has cultivated a huge welfare dependant class and these are the people hardest hit with the conservatives coming to power. Crackdown on benefit cheats and downsizing within the welfare system has led to a lot of resentment.

There has always been a working class versus middle class cold war in UK which has been accentuated with the way people saw the bankers being treated with kid gloves post the financial crisis. Cameron has cut a lot of working class jobs under austerity measures and it's been bubbling up for a while. It might be the yobs rioting, but there is certainly sympathy for them from the working classes.

PS: Guess who else the Labour cultivated?

these riots have nothing to do with islamists or immigrants. the rioters are mostly young black kids and white (middle class) anarchists, who enjoy taking to the streets. the black kids mostly are "under employed" and economically disadvantaged - though will do fine out of benefits. this is partly due to discrimination and partly due to the 'gangsta culture' amongst the young males in UK Caribbean communities - very catch 22 situation. most of the neighbourhoods being affected are where these communities form substantial minorities. they are being stupid, burning their own shops, etc. the underlying tension against the police is long standing and part of the 'yoof' kulcha' - its been like this since the late 70's.

as others have said, its summer, there's a party mood, rumours are flying around (BB messenger in particular is a favoured media), and its good fun to roam the streets and be powerful for a few minutes of fame and steal some new trainers and a tv set. things that would cost weeks of working or benefit... i don't see a sense of alarm in mango englanders yet, its all business as usual

^^^ in this case i don't think so. london is 99% functional as normal, despite these serious incidents. there is no alarm or panic. the islamists will be very outnumbered and if they try something like this, mango people (including the rioting black kids) will not be too kind to them (i.e. will retalliate). the police may have to maintain PC fronts, but will probably indulge in out of sight beatings and kickings (as usual)

I read thar turkish areas had local people form groups to keep rioters away from their stores/homes. Same with "muslim" groups. They seem to be pretty well grouped.
