This sounds suspiciously like a case I had linked earlier - which was also from Johns Hopkins - in which an Indian researcher's work on algorithms for robotic surgery were plagiarized after which Johns Hopkins went into denial and closed ranks.in the case, Rajesh Kumar, PhD. v. Johns Hopkins University, which in the end set a precedent for safeguarding the principles of all academics in the State of Maryland.
The jury determined that JHU had breached its contact not to retaliate against a faculty member who lodged a complaint in good faith. In addition to the finding of unlawful retaliation, the jury found that Johns Hopkins University breached its contracts with Dr. Kumar to pay him required wages and benefits and wrongfully seized materials he had stored electronically on a JHU-hosted server.
What is interesting to me is the way the case dragged on for years - which is the sort of thing that the Indian court system is accused of doing. Not in America.
Re: Positive News from the USA
universities on the outside look more 'open' and 'fair n balanced' than corporations but the reverse is true. usually a cabal of senior profs in each dept are a law unto themselves. dirty linen only gets out rarely. even rival factions keep their secrets and settle their own fights behind the wall of omerta. schols etc are not tough for such powerful profs to arrange for the right candidate if you keep on their good books. ppl who are not 'affiliated' to any faction and just want to keep clean hands are punished and diminished though. and unlike corporate world there is no HR to keep a minimal check on things getting out of hand. the internal admin committees are wink wink nudge nudge coffee clubs stuffed with the very same buddy network. and with the emeritus system the politicians can keep playing the game until their late 70s.

$50000 is peanuts and Kumar had to pay for the attorney also and therefore is probably a net loser both in financial and academic terms. Can't tell from the report what the whole case was about

Public dockets are not hard to obtain, if one is so inclined. But no one will be.Vriksh wrote:$50000 is peanuts and Kumar had to pay for the attorney also and therefore is probably a net loser both in financial and academic terms. Can't tell from the report what the whole case was about
It is unfathomable to me, why kumar would want to be this "loser". Attorneys dont come cheap. As the Hakim noted above, things "conveniently" dragged on forever. May be there is other litigation going on as well.
On the other hand, some times, however rare, it is not about the money. And yet the precedent is important to record. How can you tell if this was such a time?
Why did kumar insist on a trial; was no settlement forthcoming that would save him from being a "loser" of such grand proportions?
And this is why I noted that "no one will ever know", or maybe the mystery is not much of a mystery after all.

At least his honor is vindicated. let this be a lesson of how even great Utys are just stealers/crooks.Shreeman wrote:... and no one will ever know..
Shiv its the same case. What the judge did was ignore the IP stealing and gave award for the lesser charges.
If the Uty is guilty of these then they might also have been guilty of the bigger kleptocracy.
Shreeman, Rajesh Kumar did fight for principles and knew all the while he was being taken for a ride aby all including his own lawyer who was learning on his fees.

- Honor is irrelevant. Kumar is an outcast now.
- The IP case is separate, google chacha brings up not one but two IP cases, one still on docket. They are against publishers, not university. IP is federal litigation, employment a state matter. Only if you create a trafficing situation dso you get a Bharara involved. Otherwise, employers can treat ANYONE as a mexican with impunity.
- The university has been judged by a jury to have violated salary/contract laws -- worse than the DK case. No allegations, an actual jury judgment. Where are the state's attorneys?
Who has been punished here?

It was the first day of a school in USA and a new Indian student named Chandrasekhar Subramanian entered the 9th grade.
The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American History.
Teacher :- Who said 'Give me Liberty, or give me Death'?"
She saw a sea of blank faces except for Chandrasekhar, who had his hand up: Chandrasekhar :- 'Patrick Henry, 1775,' he said.
'Very good!
Teacher :- Who said 'Government of the People, by the People, for the People, shall not perish from the Earth?''
Again, no response except from Chandrasekhar:- 'Abraham Lincoln, 1863'.
The teacher snapped at the class, 'You should be ashamed. Chandrasekhar, who is new to our country, knows more about our history than you do.'
She heard a loud whisper: 'F..k the Indians'
'Who said that?' she demanded. Chandrasekhar put his hand up. 'General Custer, 1862.'
At that point, a student in the back said, 'I'm gonna puke.'
The teacher glares around and asks 'All right! Now, who said that?' Again, Chandrasekhar says, 'George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991.'
Now furious, another student yells, 'Oh yeah? S..k this!'
Chandrasekhar jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher, 'Bill Clinton to Monica Lewinsky, 1997.'
Now with almost mob hysteria someone said 'You little shit. If you say anything else, I'll kill you.'
Chandrasekhar frantically yells at the top of his voice, 'Michael Jackson to the child witnesses testifying against him, 2004.'
The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, 'Oh shit, we're screwed!'
And Chandrasekhar said quietly, 'I think it was Lehmann Brothers, November 4th, 2008'.
Cheers and Long Life,
Abhijit Bapat

Young Scientists Say They're Sexually Abused In The Field
While sexual violence can occur in all workplaces — roughly 50 percent of women report experiencing sexual harassment at some point in their careers — Hinde says the particular nature of field sites, where researchers are far from home, and the lines between work life and personal life are blurred, may make them more prone to this type of wrongdoing.
People are being told 'what happens in the field stays in the field

If you think this targets a particular race, then you are supporting crime
But what is priceless is this:Ocala is not the first Florida city to pass a saggy pants ordinance prohibiting people on city property from having their pants pulled down in a way that exposes their underwear or bare buttocks.
If you thought that was prejudice, you, my dear friend, are mistaken. This ordnance or whatever is to protect the elderly from low-hung pants!"It's working good," said Opa-Locka City Commissioner Timothy Holmes, who pushed for the law.
He said elderly people often are afraid when they see young people with their drawers down.

Man whose jaw was broken by Domino's driver in road rage attack offered £200 of PIZZA as compensation
... Now the pizza franchise's head office has offered Mr Murray £200 in vouchers as compensation.
But he told The Sun on Sunday he had broken his jaw and the offer caused him 'even more pain', adding: 'It's an insult'.
'He offered him some vouchers as a gesture of goodwill. It was nothing like "here, have some pizza and let's hear no more of it".
'Unfortunately those vouchers were short-dated to the end of August, which was an error

New leaker disclosing U.S. secrets, government concludes
By Evan Perez, CNN
updated 8:00 AM EDT, Wed August 6, 2014
(CNN) -- The federal government has concluded there's a new leaker exposing national security documents in the aftermath of surveillance disclosures by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, U.S. officials tell CNN.
Proof of the newest leak comes from national security documents that formed the basis of a news story published Tuesday by the Intercept, the news site launched by Glenn Greenwald, who also published Snowden's leaks.
The Intercept article focuses on the growth in U.S. government databases of known or suspected terrorist names during the Obama administration.
The article cites documents prepared by the National Counterterrorism Center dated August 2013, which is after Snowden left the United States to avoid criminal charges.
Greenwald has suggested there was another leaker. In July, he said on Twitter "it seems clear at this point" that there was another.
Government officials have been investigating to find out that identity.
In a February interview with CNN's Reliable Sources, Greenwald said: "I definitely think it's fair to say that there are people who have been inspired by Edward Snowden's courage and by the great good and virtue that it has achieved."
