The 13th amendment was the result of civil war, and here is what it did:
The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. In Congress, it was passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, and by the House on January 31, 1865.
Slavery is LEGAL in the US. Just catch black people and send them to prison, which is what the current system is aimed at doing.

Slavery in the Bible

Except for murder, slavery has got to be one of the most immoral things a person can do. Yet slavery is rampant throughout the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments. The Bible clearly approves of slavery in many passages, and it goes so far as to tell how to obtain slaves, how hard you can beat them, and when you can have sex with the female slaves.

Many Jews and Christians will try to ignore the moral problems of slavery by saying that these slaves were actually servants or indentured servants. Many translations of the Bible use the word "servant", "bondservant", or "manservant" instead of "slave" to make the Bible seem less immoral than it really is. While many slaves may have worked as household servants, that doesn't mean that they were not slaves who were bought, sold, and treated worse than livestock.

The following passage shows that slaves are clearly property to be bought and sold like livestock.

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

The following passage describes how the Hebrew slaves are to be treated.

If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. But the slave may plainly declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.' If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever. (Exodus 21:2-6 NLT)

Breaking self-imposed vanvas to post this (will forget otherwise):
https://abagond.wordpress.com/2014/12/0 ... -massacre/
The Sand Creek Massacre (November 29th 1864) took place in Colorado, then a western territory of the US, now a state. US Army Colonel John Chivington had at least 105 women and children and 28 men killed. Some of Chivington’s men had cut out the private parts of females and stretched them over their hats.

The massacre was part of the genocide of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians in Colorado.

In 1858 gold was discovered in Colorado. White miners came. Then came White traders and farmers to sell to them. Then came White soldiers to protect them. Thus Denver and White Colorado were born.

In 1862 President Lincoln appointed John Evans governor of the territory. Colonel John Chivington, a former Christian minister and Sunday school teacher, was the territory’s top military commander. He was famous for stopping Texas from taking over New Mexico for the Confederacy (of southern slave states).

In 1864 Evans said Whites could kill any Natives they found who were not on reservation land. Most were not. Chivington, meanwhile, gave a speech in Denver saying that all Natives should be killed and scalped, even babies: “Nits make lice!”

Black Kettle led a band of 600 or so Southern Cheyennes and Arapahos. After speaking with Evans and Chivington, he was able to get his people safely to the reservation at Sand Creek. The commander of nearby Fort Lyon, Major Scott J. Anthony, promised his protection.

On the morning of November 29th, when most of Black Kettle’s men were away hunting, Chivington arrived at Sand Creek with 700 soldiers, some from Fort Lyon itself.

Black Kettle flew his US flag, a big garrison flag with 34 stars, a gift he received when he visited President Lincoln the year before. He was very proud of it. When Colonel Greenwood presented it to him, he said no soldier would fire on him so long as he flew the flag.

Black Kettle told his people they would be safe under the US flag. Hundreds of women and children gathered. He flew a white flag too.

Chivington’s men fired on them.

Chivington intended to kill everyone at Sand Creek, but Colorado’s best soldiers had been sent east to fight the Civil War. Many of his men were not well trained, some were drunk – and some, from Fort Lyon, which had promised Black Kettle its protection, considered it murder and dishonour and shot only in self-defence.
Lindneaux-Painting

Detail from “Sand Creek massacre” (1936) by Robert Lindneux

The fighting lasted till nightfall.

The living fled across the plains and walked all night through the icy winds to the hunting camp. In the war that followed, Cheyennes and Arapahos lost eastern Colorado.

Whites in Colorado considered the Sand Creek Massacre a great victory. It made the news across the US. Whites back east were shocked and sickened. The Army distanced itself from Chivington, who quit to avoid a court martial. The Senate held hearings. Even though the facts were well known, no one was punished. Most US high school history books remain silent about it.

Here is something about a Dutch tradition the Dutch are very proud of, they react very aggressively towards any criticism of this blatantly racist 'tradition'.

Well said!

We need the Indian Holocaust Museum most to tell other Indians what happens when we lower our guard, when we forget the Kshatriya Dharma, when we are unable to match the deviousness and brutality of the enemy!
Britain apparently teaches a biased view of the British Raj

From a front page report in the Times of India (Mumbai): It said that British school children are not taught the evil aspects of British rule - in fact there is a controversy going on in Britain right now about teaching school-children about Jallianwala Bagh, where hundreds of peacefully protesting Indians were massacred (including women and children). It’s difficult to understand why Britain wants to brush this under the carpet..after all if German school children can be taught about the evils of Nazi rule, why can’t British school-children be taught about the evils of British rule in India? Sure, the Nazis did more damage in a short period of time and killed millions of Jews.

But who has calculated the damage that Britain did? Are there any records of the number of Indians killed and enslaved by the British during the British Raj? Are there any records of ill-treatment meted out on a regular basis to the Indians? Has anyone calculated the economic damage caused to India because of the East India Company and British rule? Of course not.

Britain does not want to know

The truth is that the truth is too painful. And neither the Brits nor the Indians in Britain are trying very hard to do anything about it. On the other hand, it is because of the power of the Jewish community that Germany said sorry…and meant it. It is because of the Jewish people that today German school children know the truth. Surely, history is important?

Britain’s attempt to change the curriculum is being opposed
Britain is trying to change the curriculum to give British school-children a ‘valuable insight into shared, if painful and often controversial aspects of the relationship between Indian and Britain’ but there are groups opposing this because this kind of teaching is considered anti-British. How can the dissemination of truth be anti anything?

The sad part is is that millions of young Britishers are growing up thinking that Britain did India a big favour by ruling her. Why, the Queen herself wears a diamond stolen from India in her crown. The Wikipedia calls this diamond the ’spoils of war.’ Funny.

Indians Not Allowed: A Humiliating Raj

Jawaharlal Nehru has remarked: "In India every European, be he German, or Pole or Rumanian, is automatically a member of the ruling race. Railway carriages, station retiring rooms, benches in parks, etc. are marked 'For Europeans Only.' This is bad enough in South Africa or elsewhere, but to have to put up with it in one's own country is a humiliating and exasperating reminder of one's enslaved condition."

Reference:
The Discovery of India (Oxford India Paperbacks) (p. 295)
by Jawaharlal Nehru

Dogs and Indians?

"...dogs and Indians" were, by notification in that precise language, excluded from some of "Europeans only" clubs. Indians were not allowed to travel by railway carriages, or use railway waiting rooms, reserved for Europeans. Not only that, Indian judges were not allowed to try Europeans in the districts and the Ilbert Bill, introduced in 1883 during Lord Ripon's viceroyalty, to remedy the situation, had to be withdrawn in the face of vicious opposition by Europeans and Anglo-Indians.

Colonialism and animals - By Hiranmay Karlekar - dailypioneer.com - March 5 2004)

==============

According to Zareer Masani, "Whites only places like the Delhi Club remained a symbolic reminder of the alien and humiliating side of foreign rule. The last of them, like the Breach Candy Swimming Pool in Bombay (Mumbai), excluded Indians till the 1960s and continues to operate discriminatory entry rules for visitors. The vast majority of Indians, of course, had no desire to enter European society. And the notion of segregation was by no means new in a caste-ridden society. What made Anglo-Indian racism unacceptable was that it was practiced by foreign rulers and affected precisely those Indians who were most westernized and had the strongest aspirations to equality. There was something particularly galling about a system which allowed in the most humble white, but excluded the most aristocratic Indian.

The racial exclusiveness and prejudice of Anglo-Indian society was not confined to social contact with Indians. Culturally, it took the form of an overwhelming rejection of and contempt for India's traditional learning and arts, with a corresponding emphasis on the superiority of Western values and education. Incidents of racial humiliation were an everyday occurrence for most Indians who encountered the British. The most visible symbols of white supremacy were the 'Europeans Only' or Indians and Dogs not allowed' in first-class railway carriages.

This memory still rankles with Indian scholars like Sankara Menon, who is President of the Madras theosophists' educational center at Kalakshetra. "The British were a very blind people...except in the case of a very few people who were deep students, they did not make any attempt during their 250 years here in this country to contact Indian thinking. They wouldn't know what the Bhagavad Gita' contained, what the Upanishads contained....." The new imperialism brought with it the proselytizing work of Christian missionaries; and neglect of Indian art became a virtue in the campaign to win Indian converts.

The Royal Bombay Yacht Club, which barred Indians from entering, even if they happened to be Maharajas.

If you read Edward Said, he points out that these attitudes were built up and established in a huge body of historical, sociological, anthropological, philological and literary works from Britain, France, Germany and later the US with reference to the entire Orient - which included Egypt - all the way to India and beyond.

These are core European assumptions, only recently thinly covered over by top-down legislation. The past cannot be erased by legislation.

"Nations and Empires that Grew on Genocide and Slavery"

Consider changing title to "Nations and Empires Grow on Genocide and Slavery". Else you you're referencing the 1% of all Empires that grew on soft power. And I don't know who they are.

It is the nature of empires to do all the things that will be discussed here and to do them in a way that we all know.

Unless we are skirting around the Islamic empire issue, IMVVHO, let's start from APJK's wanting to obliterate the memory of 2,500 years of being a doormat. And how do we say never again?

We removed the Victoria statues but still call one of the roads in ND "Tughlak Road". Mo Bin T was pillager in the best of marauder traditions :)

Here comes Belgium, land of savior of India and NREGA pioneer Jean Dreze:

Congo Free State, 1885-1908
Although local chiefs organized tribal resistance, the FP brutally crushed these uprisings. Rebellions often included Congolese fleeing their villages to hide in the wilderness, ambushing army units, and setting fire to rubber vine forests.[2] In retribution, the FP burned villages and FP officers sent their soldiers into the forest to find and kill hiding rebels. To prove the success of their patrols, soldiers were ordered to cut off and bring back dead victims’ right hands as proof that they had not wasted their bullets.[3] If their shots missed their targets or if they used cartridges on big game, soldiers would cut off the hands of the living and wounded to meet their quotas.[3]
From 1885 to 1908, it is estimated that the Congolese native population decreased by about ten million people.[2] Historian Adam Hochshild identifies a number of causes for this loss under Leopold’s reign—murder, starvation, exhaustion and exposure, disease, and plummeting birth rates. Congolese historian Ndaywel e Nziem estimates the death toll at thirteen million.[7] Leopold capitalized on the vast wealth extracted in ivory and rubber during his twenty-three year reign of terror in the CFS. He spent some of this wealth by constructing grand palaces and monuments including the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. Ironically, Leopold never visited the kingdom in which he committed such atrocities, to witness the tragedy of his greed.

Serb Holocaust during WW2
About 700,000 Serbs were murdered by puppet regime propped up by Axis powers.
In June 1941, Milan Budak, then Croatian minister of education, is on record as stating that Croatia was to be a state of two religions: Roman Catholicism and Islam. Bosnia-Herzegovina was part of wartime Croatia, and the Bosnian Muslims were encouraged to massacre Serbs; the Bosnian Muslim Handzjar unit of the SS was particularly effective in this regard. According to Budak's openly stated policy, Serbs should be dealt with in three ways: one-third to be exterminated, one-third deported and the rest converted to Catholicism
Wasn't SS supposed to be only made of "pure Aryans"?

Quoting now from a Serbian source since atrocities were done against Serbs.
A Silent Genocide: Serbian genocide in WW2
The decline of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century resulted in the diminishing role of Serbians in the Hapsburg realm. Soon they were striped of their privileges and were viewed as supporters of Serbian nationalism that was considered an enemy of the Austrian-Hungarian multiethnic society. Simultaneously the idea of creating a united Yugoslavia by combing mainly Croats and Serbians; begun to emerge mostly in the intellectuals that were influencing Southern Slavic communities in Vienna, Trieste and Zagreb.
..
On 06/06/1941 Germany declared war against Yugoslavia and bombarded heavily Belgrade by killing some 30,000 civilians. The Croatians servicemen in the army, to a large extent, surrender to the German forces and in a matter of days. Yugoslavian resistance collapsed. It was at that moment precisely that Yugoslavia proved to be an artificial state with little coherence of its national foundation.

The occupied Yugoslavia was divided amongst Germany, Italy, Albania, Hungary and Bulgaria. In modern day Croatia a puppet state was created by the Ustaci leader, Dr Ante Pavelic. It was named Nezavisna Drzava Hrvatska (NDH), and had a population of 6 million people. 50% of those were Croatians, 30% Serbians, 12% Muslims and 8% others (Slovenians, Italians, Jews Germans, Roma, Hungarians).

The first and foremost task of the new state was to eradicate the Serbian Orthodox Church that acted as a spiritual guidance for the suffering people. Around 250,000 Orthodox were forced in a gun point to convert to Catholicism, whilst 400 Churches and monasteries were demolished. A large number of priests and Bishops were assassinated in order to eradicate any leadership that would be able to resist in the “New Order” as proclaimed by Pavelic and his followers.
..
Furthermore, a campaign of blood and terror ensured that around 500,000 Serbians would loose their lives in the short period of the NDH state-1941-44. The American ambassador in Istanbul in 1943 (Barton Berry) describes “ The Ustasi kill the Serbs with all possible means. Machine guns, pistols, knives, machetes, hammers. They even throw persons alive into ovens, or drown them in Sava river.”

A series of concentration camps was created in the Croatian territory were Serbians, Jews and Roma were forced to work all day long and eventually die of starvation or plainly executed. 44,000 children 6-14 years old died in these camps, whilst the Roman Catholic Church failed to mention a single word for these atrocities. It is also interesting to note that the Muslim population of the NDH was actually very supportive of the Ustasi and had full heartedly supported the Axis powers during wartime. Two SS battalions were composed by Bosniak Muslims that performed atrocities against Jews and Orthodox Christians across the Balkans.
..
In 1944 the balance of powers was drifting dynamically towards the Allies side and the Ustasis had already planned their escape routes. The infamous “rat line” was established where ex Ustasi members were to transferred to Latin America mostly and escape punishment. A French film called “Amen” by the Greek Kostas Gavras presented vividly the Vatican connection in assuring the escape of war criminals through a complex contraband network that flew people out of Europe. Pavelic himself escaped to Argentina with the help of the Croatian Catholic priest Draganovic, based in Rome. He died in his mansion in Buenos Aries, untouched despite the fact that he was one of the leading war criminals of the 20th century. Along with him virtually the whole of the Ustasi leadership found a warm nest in the cities of Sao Paulo, Santiago, La Paz and other Latin America locations.
From wiki, World War II persecution of Serbs
Sisak children's concentration camp
The inhabitants of Sisak were quickly brought to the Ustaše's attention, .. A large camp was later erected and it held more than 6,600 Serb and Roma children throughout World War II.
..
Religious persecution
The Ustaše recognized both Roman Catholicism and Islam as the national religions of Croatia, but held the position that Eastern Orthodoxy, as a symbol of Serbian identity, was their foe.[67] They never recognized the existence of the Serb people on the territories of Croatia or anywhere else in the world, for that matter – they referred to them only as "Croats of the Eastern faith", also referring to Bosnian-Muslims (or Bosniaks) as "Croats of the Islamic faith". The Ustaše in power banned the use of the expression "Serbian Orthodox faith" and mandated the use of the expression "Greek-Eastern faith" in its place.[68] Hundreds of Serbian Orthodox Christian churches were closed, destroyed, or plundered during Ustaše rule.[68] On 2 July 1942, the Croatian Orthodox Church was founded to replace the institutions of the Serbian Orthodox Church.[69]
..
Position of the Roman Catholic Church

For the duration of the war, the Vatican kept full diplomatic relations with the Independent State of Croatia and granted Pavelić an audience with its papal nuncio in the capital Zagreb, albeit not an official diplomatic meeting. .. Miroslav Filipović was a Franciscan friar (from the Petrićevac monastery) who joined the Ustaše on 7 February 1942 in a brutal massacre of 2,730 Serbs of the nearby villages, including 500 children. He was reportedly subsequently dismissed from his order. He became the Chief Guard of the Jasenovac concentration camp where he was nicknamed "Fra Sotona" ("Friar Satan"). When he was hanged for war crimes, he wore his clerical garb.[97]

Ustaše gold
The Ustaše had sent large amounts of gold that it had plundered from Serbian and Jewish property owners during World War II into Swiss bank accounts. Of a total of 350 million Swiss Francs, about 150 million was seized by British troops; however, the remaining 200 million (ca. 47 million dollars) reached the Vatican. In October 1946, the American intelligence agency SSU alleged that these funds are still held in the Vatican Bank. This matter is the crux of a recent class action suit against the Vatican Bank and other defendants.[98]
There were numerous concentration camps, including specific concentration camps for children.

Portugal Approves Citizenship Plan for Sephardic Jews
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSJAN. 29, 2015, 9:30 A.M. E.S.T.

LISBON, Portugal — Portugal's government on Thursday approved a law granting citizenship rights to the descendants of Jews it persecuted 500 years ago, following Spain's adoption of similar legislation last year.

Cabinet spokesman Luis Marques Guedes said the government passed changes to its nationality law, providing dual citizenship rights for Sephardic Jews — the term commonly used for those who once lived in the Iberian peninsula.

The rights will apply to those who can demonstrate "a traditional connection" to Portuguese Sephardic Jews, such as through "family names, family language, and direct or collateral ancestry."

Applicants will be vetted by Portuguese Jewish community institutions, as well as by government agencies. Applicants will also have to say whether they have a criminal record.

Spain adopted a similar law last year.

The Portuguese Parliament unanimously endorsed the law in 2013. Since then, the government has been drawing up the legal details and establishing administrative procedures. The effective date of the law was not immediately announced, but will be when the legislation is published soon in the country's official gazette.

Jewish community leaders say they expect the application procedure to take four months. Applicants will not need to travel to Portugal.

Portuguese monarchs, eager for tax revenue and Jewish talent that helped Portugal become one of Europe's wealthiest nations during the Age of Expansion in the 1400s, had protected their thriving Sephardic community.

After Spain drove out Jews in 1492, some 80,000 of them crossed the border into Portugal, historians estimate. King Joao II charged the fleeing Sephardic Jews a tax to shelter in Portugal. He promised to provide them with ships so they could go to other countries, but later changed his mind.

In 1496 his successor King Manuel I, eager to find favor with Spain's powerful Catholic rulers, Ferdinand and Isabella and marry their daughter Isabella of Aragon, gave the Jews 10 months to convert or leave. When they opted to leave, Manuel issued a new decree prohibiting their departure and forcing them to embrace Roman Catholicism as "New Christians."

The "New Christians" adopted new names, inter-married and even ate pork in public to prove their devotion to Catholicism. Some Jews, though, kept their traditions alive, secretly observing the sabbath at home then going to church on Sunday. They circumcised their sons and quietly observed Yom Kippur, calling it in Portuguese the "dia puro," or pure day.

Though officially accepted, the New Christians were at the mercy of popular prejudice. In the Easter massacre of Jewish converts in 1506 in Lisbon, more than 2,000 Jews are believed to have been murdered by local people.

The Portuguese Inquisition, established in 1536, was at times more cruel than its earlier Spanish counterpart. It persecuted, tortured and burned at the stake tens of thousands of Jews.

Now those events are widely viewed as a stain on Portuguese history.

In 1988, then-president Mario Soares met with members of Portugal's Jews community and formally apologized for the Inquisition. In 2000, the leader of Portugal's Roman Catholics issued a public apology for the suffering imposed by the Catholic Church, and in 2008 a monument to the dead was erected outside the Sao Domingos church where the Easter massacre began.

Will the portugese even acknowledge the atrocities they inflicted on the occupied goa, destruction of hindu temples, forcible conversion of hindus to catholism. I doubt they will even acknowledge this. Many goan catholics consider themselves portugese descent and even call hindus as occupiers.

Al Jazeera has been showing a three part documentary called "Immigration Nation". It charts the story of immigration to Oz, from the original "White Australia" policy to the current situation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptxlehKaBE4

During the series there is the sad story of the South Pacific islanders who were converted to Christianity, shipped to Oz to work on plantations and then when the white Australia policy was enacted, dumped back to their Islands of origin.
They show a short clip from a film called "the Transformed Isles". I can't find the film, but have found some other information. The church was basically in cahoots with plantation owners to get them labour.

Will the portugese even acknowledge the atrocities they inflicted on the occupied goa, destruction of hindu temples, forcible conversion of hindus to catholism. I doubt they will even acknowledge this. Many goan catholics consider themselves portugese descent and even call hindus as occupiers.

Perhaps that should read Will the Indians even acknowledge the atrocities they inflicted on the occupied goa, destruction of hindu temples, forcible conversion of hindus to catholism. I doubt they will even acknowledge this.

That might be more germane to Indian identity and self-esteem.

'How can anyone claim Africa did not have societies before the arrival of colonialism? Political, economic and social structures existed in African society well before the 19th century. Frederic Caillaurd, during his quest to discover the source of the Nile, marvelled at the structures of Egyptian society. Massive empires existed in Zimbabwe and Zululand (to name two) and were crushed by the land grab of the colonial empires in the 19th century.'

EJI's New Lynching Report Documents an Era of Racial Terrorism

February 10, 2015

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) today released Lynching in America: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror, which documents EJI’s multi-year investigation into lynching in twelve Southern states during the period between Reconstruction and World War II. EJI researchers documented 3959 racial terror lynchings of African Americans in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia between 1877 and 1950 – at least 700 more lynchings of black people in these states than previously reported in the most comprehensive work done on lynching to date.

Lynching in America makes the case that lynching of African Americans was terrorism, a widely supported phenomenon used to enforce racial subordination and segregation. Lynchings were violent and public events that traumatized black people throughout the country and were largely tolerated by state and federal officials. This was not “frontier justice” carried out by a few marginalized vigilantes or extremists. Instead, many African Americans who were never accused of any crime were tortured and murdered in front of picnicking spectators (including elected officials and prominent citizens) for bumping into a white person, or wearing their military uniforms after World War I, or not using the appropriate title when addressing a white person. People who participated in lynchings were celebrated and acted with impunity. Not a single white person was convicted of murder for lynching a black person in America during this period.

The report explores the ways in which lynching profoundly impacted race relations in this country and shaped the contemporary geographic, political, social, and economic conditions of African Americans. Most importantly, lynching reinforced a narrative of racial difference and a legacy of racial inequality that is readily apparent in our criminal justice system today. Mass incarceration, racially biased capital punishment, excessive sentencing, disproportionate sentencing of racial minorities, and police abuse of people of color reveal problems in American society that were shaped by the terror era.

No prominent public memorial or monument commemorates the thousands of African Americans who were lynched in America. Lynching in America argues that is a powerful statement about our failure to value the black lives lost in this brutal campaign of racial violence. Research on mass violence, trauma, and transitional justice underscores the urgent need to engage in public conversations about racial history that begin a process of truth and reconciliation in this country.

“We cannot heal the deep wounds inflicted during the era of racial terrorism until we tell the truth about it,” said EJI Director Bryan Stevenson. “The geographic, political, economic, and social consequences of decades of terror lynchings can still be seen in many communities today and the damage created by lynching needs to be confronted and discussed. Only then can we meaningfully address the contemporary problems that are lynching’s legacy.”

Also take a look at this:

Map of 73 Years of Lynchings

The most recent data on lynching, compiled by the Equal Justice Initiative, shows premeditated murders carried out by at least three people from 1877 to 1950 in 12 Southern states. The killers claimed to be enforcing some form of social justice. The alleged offenses that prompted the lynchings included political activism and testifying in court.

Forgotten genocide by the US in WW2.USAF Gen.Curtiss Le May said that if the US did not win the war,he would be put on trial as a war criminal!

That many US soldiers cut off the ears of Japanese soldiers and also scalped them has not been widely piublicised, for obvious reasons! "Bomber" Harris, responsible for the horrific destruction of German cities like Dresden,Le May and many others must be now declared as Allied War criminals too,and their leaders like Churchill condemned for giving them the green light to behave like diabolic monsters. The deliberate and secret recovery of Nazi and Japanese loot during WW2,worth trillions upon trillions, was never revealed. This loot ended up in the pockets of a few top Allied leaders, generals, intelligence agencies, cronies, etc. Only the tip of the iceberg was given back to the original owners.

Tokyo fire bombing 70th anniversary: Survivors beg Japan to remember the forgotten 100,000
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 96651.html
On the 70th anniversary of Tokyo’s fire bombing, relatives are asking for a real tribute to its victims
David McNeill

It was just after midnight when the rumble of B-29 bombers was heard, jolting Tokyo awake. The incendiaries that fell from their bellies, full of jelly petroleum, were like nothing anyone had ever seen.

They turned canals and rivers into flame and if the jelly stuck to you, it kept burning till flesh turned to bone. “The planes filled the sky like dragonflies,” recalls Michiko Kiyoka. “Everywhere you looked there were charred bodies.”

Today, Ms Kiyoka, now 91, will join a small group of elderly Tokyoites and mark the death of her father and sister in the 1945 firebombing, which killed about 100,000 people in the single night of 10 March.

Because men of fighting age were away, most of the victims were women, the elderly and children. A US survey later concluded that probably more people lost their lives during the raid by 300 bombers than at any single moment in history.

The Tokyo bombing opened the curtain on an orgy of destruction in the final months of the Second World War that included dozens of similar raids on Japanese cities, and culminated in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August. When the droning of bombers stopped on 15 August, almost 70 cities had been reduced to rubble and perhaps half a million people were dead.

Some thought that Imperial Japan, like Nazi Germany, deserved retribution for the bombing of Shanghai and Chongqing, the Rape of Nanjing and other war atrocities across Asia. But others asked where had the moral high ground gone since US President Franklin D Roosevelt described the 1940 Nazi blitzkrieg of British cities as “inhuman barbarism”?

If the bombing of Dresden a month earlier than Tokyo had produced a ripple of public debate in Europe, “no discernible wave of revulsion took place in the US or Europe in the wake of the far greater destruction of Japanese cities”, wrote Mark Selden, a historian at Cornell University.

Yet today, unlike Hiroshima or Nagasaki, there is no publicly funded museum in Japan’s capital to commemorate the night of 10 March. The Tokyo government, urged on by a small group of private citizens, began compiling an incomplete list of victims in 2010. A small memorial squeezed into a corner of Yokoamicho Park in the city contains their names, next to a charnel house with the mixed ashes of thousands who died.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel today reminded Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of the need to face up to the past. In a speech in Tokyo, Ms Merkel said those who close their eyes to history are “blind to the present”, a quote from a famous speech by the late German president Richard von Weizsacker.

Tokyo lacked the emotional or financial resources to properly mourn the victims after the war, says Bret Fisk, a Tokyo-based novelist who writes about the 1945 raids. Later, there was no appetite for a political fight with Washington, Japan’s new Cold War ally. Remarkably, Japan awarded the architect of the 1945 raids, US General Curtis LeMay, its highest prize in 1964 for helping to reconstruct Japan’s Self-Defence Forces after the war.

Plans for a museum became bogged down in controversy in the 1990s. Conservatives said the plans were “anti-Japanese and “self-masochistic”. The decision infuriated survivors. Tokyo had no stomach for reminding people of the horrors of war, said survivor Katsumoto Saotome, who was 12 when the bombers arrived. He set up a private fund to build the Centre of the Tokyo Raids and War Damage, and helped launch a lawsuit for compensation. The suit was dismissed in 2009; government lawyers said that since Japanese civilians had equally experienced severe hardship during a time of national emergency, no particular group could receive special treatment, says Cary Karacas, a specialist on aerial bombing at the City University of New York.

The dwindling band of survivors of the Great Tokyo Air Raid met at the weekend to demand the event is properly memorialised. Mr Saotome says he accepts they face an uphill fight. He says that after all these years, he still doesn’t even like to say the say the figure of 100,000 people out loud – it’s too impossibly large.

“They were all individuals,” he said. “They had all been talking to their families hours before they died.”

Yacht Club of Bombay

Mr. William Archer, in an article in the July, 1914, Fortnightly Review, describes the famous Yacht Club of Bombay, the social center of official European life in the city, and says:

"No one of Indian birth except the servants, not even the Rajput princes or the Parsee millionaire may set foot across its threshold. It is the same with the Byculla Club; indeed, every club in India practically follows this model and makes itself a little England representing exactly the interests, the comforts and the vulgarities of an English Club." He further comments:

"Such a drawing of the color line is of course inexpressibly galling to a proud and sensitive people, who see their rulers, when the business of 'running the country is over, withdraw into impregnable caste-strongholds."

The following is declared an actual occurrence: An Indian Prince, the ruler of a Native State in India, visits England and by invitation dines with the King in the Buckingham Palace. He returns to India and finds himself not allowed to enter any English Club in Calcutta, Bombay, or any other leading city.

Says the editor of an Indian religious weekly: "Aside from the missionaries and the army the one meeting place of the British in this country, is the European Club of the neighborhood, the members of which form the most arrogant and exclusive body to be found. Those who know at first hand the types of people who constitute the members of these arrogant associations are tempted to say that with them an unblushing assumption of race-superiority takes the place of religion, club life is with them a substitute for church life, and their one aim is exploitation of the country and enrichment of themselves. The European clubs with this smart set are the most anti-Indian and reactionary bodies in the whole of India."

Arrogance of the English

The spirit of Indian nationalism was intensified by the growing discontent and disaffection with British rule due to the racial arrogance of the rulers. In this regard, Sir Thomas Munro wrote in 1817, "Foreign conquerors have treated the natives with violence, but none has treated them with so much scorn as we; none have stigmatized the whole people as unworthy of trust, as incapable of honesty, and as fit to be employed only where we cannot do without them. It seems not only ungenerous, but impolite to debase the character of a people fallen under our dominion."

The social exclusiveness of the Englishmen, their arrogance and insolent treatment of Indians, particularly the immunity which they practically enjoyed for their criminal acts, including even the murder of Indians, were sources of grave discontent.

To the English-educated Indians who formed the main pillars of support for British rule, virtual exclusion from the higher branches of administration on purely racial grounds was the rudest shock.

Master Race

Jawaharlal Nehru wrote with sadness:

"Biologists tell us that racialism is a myth and there is no such thing as a master race. The whole ideology of this rule was that of the herrenvolk and the master race, and the structure of government was based upon it; indeed the idea of a master race is inherent in imperialism. More powerful than words was the practice that accompanied them and, generation after generation and year after year, India as a nation and Indians as individuals were subjected to insult, humiliation, and contemptuous treatment. The English were an imperial race, we were told, with the god-given right to govern us and keep us in subjection. "

Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Prize and Western Critics

After the announcement that the Nobel Prize was to be awarded to Tagore, Western critics sought to establish the superiority of the 'Caucasian race' over the 'Indian race' ; to discover in the poet, a dreamer with a 'narrow Western outlook' and a dated Western sensibility who had been favored by preferential treatment that was according to them, often meted out to 'colonials' for political exigency. They saw the award as something of a humiliation to which they were supposed to adjust themselves:

"It is the first time that the Nobel Prize has gone to anyone who is not what we call 'white'. It will take time, of course, for us to accommodate ourselves to the idea that some one called Rabindranath Tagore should receive a world prize for literature."

Babu English and Rudyard Kipling Insults

Among the ways in which it is common for many of the British in India to humiliate and insult the Indian people, one of the most unwarranted and galling is that of criticizing their use of English language and laughing at their mistakes. “Babu English” is a phrase of ridicule heard wherever Englishmen (not all, but certain large classes) speak of India or Indians. And singularly enough, it is applied oftenest to the Bengalis, who intellectually, and especially in linguistic attainments and ability, are not second to any Indian people, if to any people in the world. “Bengali Babu” is applied as a phrase of peculiar contempt.

The British rulers of the land insist on Indians everywhere addressing them, conversing and doing business with them, in a foreign language – the English. Suppose the tables were turned, and those same rulers were compelled to converse and write and do all their business in Bengali, the Hindustani, the Tamil or some other languages of India. Would they make fewer mistakes? Everybody knows they would make far more and worse.

There are no classes of Indians that the English so much dislike and take so much pains to insult as the educated classes. The uneducated they despise, neglect and treat almost as slaves; but they do not take the studied pains to humiliate and insult them as they do those whom they recognize as their equal in intelligence.

As Sir Henry Cotton says:

“The very thought of equality rankles in the Englishmen’s minds; the more intelligent, cultured or intellectual the Indians are the more they are disliked.”

We have the following remarkable tribute to these despised and insulted Bengalis from Hon. G. K. Gokhale of the Viceroy’s Council (himself not a Bengali):

“The Bengalis are in many respects a most remarkable people. It is easy to speak of their faults; they lie on the surface. But they have great qualities which are sometimes lost sight of. In almost all walks of life open to Indians, the Bengalis are the most distinguished. Some of the greatest social and religious reformers of recent times, have come from their ranks. Take law, science, literature: where will you find another scientist in all India to place beside Dr. (now Sir) J.C. Bose, or Dr (now Sir) P. C. Ray or a jurist like Dr. Ghose, or a poet like Rabindranath Tagore? These men are not freaks of nature. They are the highest products of which the race is regularly capable.”

Such is the race and such are the individual men whom the British take particular pains to ridicule…The Englishman has been the worst offenders against the Indian people in the ways mentioned above, or at least the one whose insults have been most galling because his writings have been so widely read, is Rudyard Kipling. The fact that Kipling was born in India and spent his earlier years there, very naturally causes his readers to take for granted that his representations are true. It is as true as a German or Russian writing about England.

Kipling seems to have cared little for the real India, the great India of the past and the present, with its history and its civilization…he seems to take pleasure in heaping ridicule upon the educated classes and in describing the Indian people generally by the use of such contemptuous expressions as “a lesser breed without the law.” And “new-caught sullen people half devil and half child.”

Such of Kipling’s writings as are connected with India have always stung the Indian people to the quick. Their popularity in England and the wide acceptance of their misrepresentations as true, have done more than almost any other cause to exasperate leading Indians…

Professor Gilbert Murray said: “If ever it were my fate to put men in prison for the books they write, I should not like it, but I should know where to begin. I should first of all lock up my old friend, Rudyard Kipling, because in several stories he has used his great powers to stir up in the minds of hundreds of thousands of Englishmen a blind and savage contempt for the Bengali. You cannot cherish a savage contempt for anyone without it being quickly reciprocated…”

But Kipling is not the only offender. It is hardly possible to conceive anything more galling to the Indian people than the tone of condescension with which they are nearly everywhere and always spoken of and referred to by the British, in their books, about India…It is the same; they the British, are in India because they are superior (of course, they are white). They are there on a high and noble mission – the mission to “bear the white man’s burden.” Of course, the fact does not count, that for more than 3,000 years before they, the British, came, India ruled herself wholly and was one of the leading nations of the world.

Chakra,

Thanks for the very insightful posts about british rule. That should help to substantiate the arguments against their rule.

One thing I always wondered about is that why britishers gave more importance to Indian Parsis as compared to rest of the lot. They were given almost equal status as whites which is evident in their literature relating to India. There are references of Parsis being more whiter, more cultural, more modern and more likeable than natives. Parsis of that time flourished in business AND politics. It was Dadabhai Navroji who found the Congress, the only freedom fighters' organization recognized and approved by goras. This was necessary because they knew that they got lucky in 1857. Luck can not be relied on every time.

My understanding for this is that for the major part of the 19th century, more or less only Parsis used to go to vilayat to get a 'proper English' education (May be they were facilitated for this). So it was easy to convert their thought process and install the british greatness in their mind. Thus they were the ideal lot to "lead" the freedom movement. It would also have been easier to brainwash Parsis as compared Hindus who had love for the land as part of their culture and daily routine. However from the end part of the 19th century onwards, more and more Hindus and some muslims (like Jinna) started going to vilayat to get the "modern" education. Many of them returned to join Congress! Every other leader with Indian education got killed some way or other. However britishers tried their best to brainwash, most of the Hindu leaders still had good amount of love for the land remaining in them. Leaders like Sardar Patel were no less a gora sahib when he returned from vilayat but his roots brought him back eventually. Totally spoiled cases like JLN were very few. MKG was not converted but was a heavily useful idiot mahatma with misplaced understanding of Hinduism.

All in all, they found Parsis and Muslims more easier to brainwash than Hindus and that's why they gave more importance to them as compared to Hindus. This was a very smart way employed by the britishers to exploit and distract the true natives of the land.

(okay, the last sentence was made just to pretend that this was not an OT post :P )

chakra wrote:On the other hand, it is because of the power of the Jewish community that Germany said sorry…and meant it. It is because of the Jewish people that today German school children know the truth. Surely, history is important?
More than Jews it is because of Brits. They were victors and hence had the opportunity to write the history as they like. Most literatures on WWII are biased. They needed to justify their own genocides by highlighting their enemy's genocides. The task was easy since Nazis were no more existing. And then, it was not like only German Xians persecuted Jews. Pretty much whole europe was instrumental in persecuting Jews even before WWII. But then, they were smart enough to pass the blame on "Nazis". They deliberately made sure that message is conveyed against Nazis and not the Germans. Germans accepted all looting and killing of theirs by brits as legitimate since "Nazis" were the ones who needed to be massacred. Germans don't seem to have a problem with the bombing which was carried out by allied bombers on the civilian refugee camps of Germans even AFTER the victory was assured. The bitter pill was made easy for the Germans to swallow, and swallow they did wholeheartedly! They are no better than self hating dhimmified yindus today.

Read the frightening account of US/Brit/Churchill/Roosevelt/Montgomery's satanic terror on German civilians. It is as chilling as the holocaust on Jews by "Nazis" if not more.

Dresden - The Worst War Crime Of WWII - 600,000 Dead

Some excerpts.
Dresden was one of the most beautiful cities in Germany, dubbed the "Florence of the Elbe" because of its world-renowned collection of Baroque architecture. It was known as a showplace of culture. It had no military bases, no major communication centers or heavy industry. It had no air defense. In the last months of the war, it was known as "Die Lazarettstadt" - it had been declared a hospital town. It was also known as the "Fluechtlingsstadt" - the City of the Refugees.

Norman Stone, Professor of Modern History at Oxford, wrote in the Daily Mail:

"Already, by 1944, it should have been clear to most people in the government that we would have to deal with . . . Germans once victory had been won . . .

(W)e went on bombing German cities months and months after it had been clear that we would win,
Soviets...
broadcast after broadcast aimed at the Red Army and repeated in millions and millions of leaflets: "Kill. Kill. Kill. Nobody is innocent. Neither the living, nor the yet unborn. . . " or ". . . if you have not killed a German a day, you have not done your duty to the Soviet motherland."
In January of 1945, it was decided that several large cities in Eastern Germany that had escaped heavy bombing should now be subjected to "area bombing" to "wreak havoc" on German morale so as to pressure Germany to surrender sooner. Churchill himself wanted more than two cities a month razed - until none was left.
How many? Nobody knows for sure. Most honest estimates range from 350,000 to 500,000 dead ......

Just think of Hiroshima. That city's atom casualties were 71,879.

During the entire war, England suffered less than 50,000 casualties from bombings.

380 persons died in bombing raids on the British munitions and aircraft producing town of Coventry, England - a raid which was declared a "German war crime".
And shockingly but not surprisingly...
The documentation of this war crime committed by the Allies, commissioned by the Hitler government in the aftermath of the Dresden holocaust, fell into Allied hands. These mountains of dead captured in the filmed footage were later edited and spliced into Allied propaganda films about "concentration camp atrocities" and were shown to the world at large as "evidence" of Jewish dead.

Read it full only.

Brits have been successful in limiting the narration of the WWII around how Nazis' persecuted Jews and how allied forces defeated them. No talks of Hitler's resolve, their phenomenal recovery from WWI and monstrous manufacturing capability achieved in so less years, his popularity and why he did the things that he did. Suits them well.

Can someone write an account of Swiss neutrality in WWII and how they drenched thousands of tonnes of gold looted from across the world? I'm sure there must have been big share of Indian gold in it. But I can't seem to find the reference of Indian gold in any account. Can someone throw light on it here?

White man’s burden

“Kipling writes of the ‘White man’s burden." He has numerous admirers and imitators in England. But we in India find the white man full of arrogance and race conceit. With their egoistical ideas of ‘racial’ superiority the British talk of ‘educating Indians in the art of self-government,’ as though this ancient nations of ours, which for millenniums and millenniums has been self-governing, is to sit like children at the feet of the self-appointed foreign masters to learn our first lessons!”

Hollywood Picture of India

Dr. Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy (1877-1947) was India's most distinguished sons of the present century, art critic and museum curator. He has observed:

"The English speaking peoples have, indeed labored under one great handicap, that of their domination by Rudyard Kipling, a skilled performer to the gallery, to be sure, but one whose irresponsible and un-instructured mentality represented all that an Englishman’s ought never to have been. He, by giving free expression to his resentment of his own inability to synthesize the East and West in his own experience, has probably done more than any other one man to delay the recognition not alone of their ultimately common heritage, but even of their common humanity; more than any other Englishman to make it true for Englishmen that east of Suez “there ain’t no Ten Commandments.” You English-speaking peoples listened to him, nevertheless, and gave him a place in your literary pantheon where, in fact, he held up the mirror to the adolescent imperialistic mentality and carries its and his “white man’s burden” so bravely. How can we think of you as grown-up men, as long as you play only with such toys as Kipling gave you, and only babble of green fields – the playing fields of Eton? It is high time that the Hollywood picture of India was forgotten."

Gunga Din is a landmark movie of racism featuring civilized British soldiers vs. naked Indian savages. The poster advertising the film Gunga Din outside British cinemas just before the Second World War. The Americans made no fewer than 35 films between the Hindoo Fakir in 1902 and Gunga Din in 1939, with a common theme of the British putting down their rebellious Indian subjects.
