When I was in high school, it was easy to explain what I-day stood for and all. The fuss around R-day was a tad tougher to explain though.

Now it kinda dawns that though we got independence on 15-aug-47, we didn't have fundamental rights until 26-jan-50.

Perhaps gurus and garus can pontificate on R-day means to them and to the country in their own words. That would be nice for perspective.

Listen carefully to the commentators, some are real disconnect. Last year one special commentator from the forces did not know how to pronounce INS Jalashwa. Had no clue about what was going on. goofed up.

the Presidents security detail (NSG or SPG) has totally moved to a fleet of all-black BMW X5 SUVs...and they already had black BMW 7i sedans for the president and guests. must say it looks impressive coming down rajpath. a large black van perhaps containing more troopers and jamming gear brings up the rear.

Flag Hoisted at Gowalia Tank Maidan

The Government issued an order banning public processions, meetings & assemblies. Despite the police warning large crowd had gathered at Gowalia Tank Maidan. Aruna Asaf Ali hoisted the Indian flag.

... The national flag was pulled down and volunteers who went to its rescued were beaten off.

Let us thank the ruling classes on this sacred Republic Day for waking us up to defend the flag, and the Constitution and Republic for which it stands, for which so many gave up so much.

It is time for another Freedom Movement, this time targeted the Resident Non-Indians.

The well turned out and synchronised military and police contingents led by General Officer Commanding (Delhi) Maj Gen Manvendra Singh marched proudly to the lilting tunes of bands through the Rajpath where President and Supreme Commander of Armed Forces Pratibha Patil took the salute. The march-past was watched by the Republic Day chief guest Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister A K Antony and the country's top political and military brass.

After the President unfurled the tricolour and a customary 21-gun salute, an Army doctor Major Laishram Jyotin Singh was awarded posthumously the highest peacetime gallantry award -- the Ashok Chakra -- for his bravery while fighting militants during an attack on Indians in Kabul. He was the first Army doctor receiving Ashok Chakra.

Four Mi-17 helicopters then zoomed in from the western skies and showered flower petals on the spectators, signalling the beginning of the parade followed by the winners of the Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra and mounted columns of 61 Cavalry.

I saw it live in 1996.

The Bengal Tableau had Rabindranath Tagore and Gandhiji!
