I couldn't help but cry when I read these stories of our brave officers, Jawans and their families. My condolences to the families. And I wish ABV would stop these upcoming "talks" with Sartaj Aziz and give our armed forces permission to carry the war to the enemy. Our soldiers need to be avenged !!
Folks - we have collected over $1400 for Maj HP Singh's family. Please send any further donations directly to India to the address given in www.armyinkashmir.org

From FrontLine
ON May 5, as summer set in on the Kargil heights, the 121 Brigade sent out its first reconnaissance patrol into the Kaksar area. The patrol's job was essentially to see whether the snow had retreated enough to allow troops to reoccupy their high-altitude summer positions along the Line of Control. Lieutenant V. Kalia and five soldiers went out into the mountains, never to return.
Radio Skardu in Pakistan reported that Kalia was captured, but there has been no word of him since. Neither have the bodies of the other members of the patrol been sighted. Days later, a second patrol made up of a Lieutenant and eight soldiers vanished in the Batalik area. It later transpired that the officer and one soldier died bravely covering the retreat of the other six soldiers.

Capt Amol Kalia and his 13 gallant men
The recapture of a key position in the Batalik sector yesterday by Capt Amol Kalia and 13 of his men, all of whom died, was one of the bravest acts seen in the Kargil sector in the ongoing operations against Pakistani soldiers and Mujahideen.
Twentyfive Pakistani soldiers were killed before the 14 Indian troops from the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and parachute commandos laid down their lives on the north-western slopes of the position at a height of about 16,000 feet after seven hours of intense fighting.
According to army spokesman Col Bikram Singh, the Pakistanis were well-entrenched and had made a number of field fortifications. Since the infiltrators had covered most of the approaches by fire, the Indian troops, in the face of intense shooting and heavy odds, scaled the objective and reached the top employing specialised mountaineering techniques.
The enemy counter-attacked the position during the early hours yesterday in which the light machine gun detachment personnel accompanying Capt Kalia were killed. Capt Kalia was seriously wounded but, showing exemplary courage, he picked up the LMG and charged at the Pakistanis killing four of them. Later he succumbed to injuries.
"In this operation, Capt Kalia along with 13 other ranks made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army. But for the selfless devotion to duty marked with exemplary courage displayed by these gallant soldiers, the recapture of this vital position would not have been possible", Col Singh said.
Major Adhikari's body recovered. Can anybody confirm that Major Saravanan's body was recovered and has been returned to his family. Is there a count of bodies that have not been recovered but are known to have been killed and their names. Does the count of 104 killed include all those whose bodies have not been recovered ?
Kaushal
General Two key positions recaptured, 17 army
men killed
New Delhi: The Indian army on Monday recaptured
two key positions north of the vital Tololing height
from Pakistani intruders after a fierce hand-to-hand
battle, reducing considerably the threat to the
Srinagar-Leh national highway, but lost one officer
and 16 men, the highest casualty for any single
operation in the Kargil sector so far.
Major Vivek Gupta, two junior commissioned officers
and five soldiers of the Rajputana Rifles battalion and
nine grenadiers were killed in the gun battle as troops
evicted the infiltrators from area ‘Saddle’ and ‘Point
4590’.
With the capture of Tololing and Point 4590, the
nearest point overlooking the national highway, “the
threat to the road and military convoys has been
reduced considerably”, an army spokesperson said
here. He said since the attack was launched along
an extremely difficult approach, the intruders were
completely surprised which resulted in fierce
hand-to-hand combat. “The enemy was forced to flee
leaving behind a number of dead Pakistan army
soldiers with large quantity of arms and ammunition,”
he said.
Indian armed forces have so far lost 103 personnel,
including eight officers, while 242 have been wounded
and eight are missing, he said, adding the number of
Pakistan army regulars killed is 267. Quoting latest
reports received from Drass sector, he said the
grenadiers had progressed beyond Point 4590 and
the heights north of this feature have also been
recaptured.
Air force combat jets on Monday did not engage in
attacks and carried out “limited operations” in Kargil
sector, an air force spokesperson said adding there
was no specific demand from the army for air strikes.
The spokesperson said the pay book of Sepoy
Ghulam Haider of Pakistan army’s Six Northern Light
Infantry had been recovered in the operations north of
Tololing, besides weapons, including three rocket
launchers, eight machine guns, automatic grenade
launcher, mortars, 13 AK-56 rifles, 24 mines, huge
quantities of ammunition and different types of
grenades and three gas masks.
He termed as “absolutely absurd” the Pakistan army
charge that Indian troops had used chemical shells.
“The Indian army does not use chemical weapons.
New Delhi is a member of the Chemical Weapons
Convention and is aware of the obligations under it.”
The spokesman said the body of Major R S Adhikari,
who was killed during the battle of Tololing on May
29, has been recovered.
Continuing to target innocent and defence less
civilian in Kargil sector, Pakistani troops also
resorted to unprovoked artillery and mortar shelling
along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kanzalwan,
Poonch, Krishanghati, Bhimbergalli and Nowshera,
he said, adding “we have responded in a befitting
manner”.
Asked about steps taken by India in the wake of
reports of a military build up on the other side of the
LoC, the spokesperson said adequate measures
have been taken to safeguard the country. Asserting
that New Delhi respected the LoC, he said Indian
artillery guns were being used only to silence guns
being fired from the Pakistani side of the LoC.
Major supply routes to support the intruders have
been cut off, he said, while admitting that it was “very
difficult” to snap every such line. “The operations to
isolate enemy positions and to degrade its fighting
potential are progressing satisfactorily and reports
from various sources continue to indicate a sagging
state of morale of enemy troops in the pockets of
intrusion,” he said.
How Tololing was won: ToI
By Rashme Sehgal
DRASS: The battle to win the crucial Tololing ridge will go down as one of the most hard-earned victories for the Indian Army fighting in Kargil. It was imperative to end the Pakistani occupation of the ridge as from the peaks the enemy could directly fire down at a four- kilometre stretch of the Srinagar- Leh highway.
Col Ravindra Nath, commandant of 2 Rajputana Rifles, whose regiment spearheaded this attack on June 16, says, ``The enemy had one of the deepest penetrations at Tololing which is at a height of 15,000 ft. The Pakistani soldiers were strongly entrenched and we had to fight our way up inch by inch, from one boulder to the next...
``We had planned it out as a night operation so that the enemy could not track us down easily. Each of my Jawans was carrying a fighting load of 15 to 17 kg of equipment. Since there is little oxygen in the air, you need to stop and regain your breath every few steps.''
Drass is the second coldest place in the world and on the night of June 16, it was drizzling and a biting cold wind swept the valley. It was snowing in the upper ridges.
``We had the advantage of artillery support and used a lot of LMG firing as our troops wound their way up. We fought an extremely valiant enemy who launched several counter-attacks before retreating. We realised that we were up against professionally trained fighters who were neither militants nor Taliban members. Though they were dressed in track suits and Pathan suits, the documents of those who died fighting showed they were all Pakistani regulars,'' he adds.
Col Nath points to fellow officer Lt Praveen Tomar with just three months' service behind him. Tomar led a platoon into battle and was making a direct assault when Maj Vivek Gupta asked him to attack from the right so that he could take the enemy head-on. Maj Gupta was hit directly but before he fell, he lobbed a grenade thereby paving the way for Indian soldiers to enter a bunker.
The battle went on through the night. ``We destroyed all the enemy bunkers and there were bodies of enemy soldiers strewn all over the place. We gave each of them a decent burial. Intermittent firing from the sides continued for some time before things settled down.''
Before the attack, the Indian Army had carried out a detailed reconnaissance of enemy formations. That led to the decision to go in for a frontal attack. ``Our soldiers had spent four days simulating the attack,'' he says.
``One of the key reasons for our victory is that we are better trained and more determined than the enemy. Our officers also fight upfront which is why our casualty rate is higher than theirs. The Jawans told me before we went into battle that since the entire Ladakh depended on our winning this ridge, they would fight till the last man.''
The regiment paid a heavy price for this victory. Col Nath states, ``Our casualty figures were very high. I lost two officers, two JCOs and nine Jawans. Twenty-five of my men were injured, 14 of them seriously. When I reached the top and saw the bodies of my officers and Jawans, I started crying. I was in a state of shock. We had accomplished the task but it had taken a heavy toll.''
The 2 Rajputana Rifles is one of the most highly decorated regiments of the Indian Army. It was the first to win the Victoria Cross.
Indian troops clear Point 4700, Knoll, Three Pimples and Lone Hill
New Delhi: The Indian army cleared strategic Point 4700 and enemy positions in Knoll, Three Pimples and Lone Hill, losing 26 men, but was successful in pushing Pakistani army soldiers and militants to 1.5 km from the Line of Control (LoC) in Drass sector as air force planes severely damaged supply camps of intruders in day and night operations.
The Indian casualties in the fighting during the last three days is the highest so far in Kargil operations in so short a period, taking the toll to 201 killed, 384 wounded and nine missing. The Pakistan army has lost 428 men, besides 183 militants and mercenaries, army spokesperson Col Bikram Singh said on Wednesday.
As part of the well planned offensive, attacks were launched by ground forces from the night of June 28 on enemy positions to the west of the Tololing ridge in Drass sector. A Garhwal Rifles battalion attacked Point 4700 which was held by 30 Pakistan soldiers and militants. At first light on Tuesday, the feature was captured and Indian troops went ahead a kilometre along the ridgeline.
Col Singh said while heavy casualties were inflicted on the Pakistanis, 11 Indian jawans were killed in the operations while seven were wounded. Three AK rifles, three heavy machine guns with tripods and spare barrels, a rocket launcher, a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft gun with spare barrel, a large quantity of ammunition, sleeping bags, telephones, pup tents and rations were recovered by the Indian troops, he said.
Three officers—Maj P Acharya, Lt Vijayant Thapar and Lt N Kenguruse—were killed along with 12 jawans when a battalion of the Rajputana Rifles stormed Knoll, Three Pimples and Lone Hill, west of Point 4700. This gallant battalion had captured Saddle and Point 4590, north of Tololing on June 13-14. Knoll and Three Pimples were held by 30 to 40 Pakistani soldiers and since only two avenues were available to reach there along knife-edged ridgelines, the attack had to go through approaches that were effectively covered by enemy fire, Col Singh said.
While Knoll and Three Pimples were captured, against heavy odds, on Tuesday morning, Lone Hill came under Indian control by 1800 hours (IST) in the evening. Col Singh said as per last reports from troops in contact, reinforcements of a grenadiers battalion had progressed beyond Lone Hill.
He said at least 40 Pakistan army soldiers and militants had been killed in these operations. Besides the 15 killed, 15 Indian soldiers were injured. Two AK rifles, three universal machine guns, one telephone, 50,000 rounds of ammunition and rations enough to look after 30 people for a month were recovered by Indian troops.
More importantly, Col Singh said the capture of these positions had considerably removed the observation of national highway 1A and provided a firm base to further the army's operations to evict the intruders.
Col Singh said in Batalik sub sector, while one of the advance positions of the intruders had been pushed back, two encircling manoeuvres undertaken by Indian troops to interdict the line of communications of the enemy had been highly successful.
Another animal transport column of 20 mules and 10 personnel, trying to bring in reinforcements for Pakistani soldiers, was effectively stopped from progressing after Indian troops resorted to artillery fire in Drass sector.
Replying to questions, Col Singh said the infiltrators had been pushed back to 1.5 km from the LoC in Drass sector and this was a major gain. In other parts of Kargil sector, the operations were on to evict them, he added. He said the strength of the intruders continued to be around 700 as casualties were replenished with fresh men. But the important factor was that the positions held by the Pakistanis had been recaptured.
The military operations officer said it was very difficult to neutralise the enemy from every pocket of intrusion in the mountains. “The resistance will continue. That's why we are having casualties. We are taking so much time to soften targets because we do not want to have more casualties.”
Regarding reports from Pakistan that over 500 Indian army personnel had been killed, he said the casualties being given out at the briefings were the real figures. “We respect every Indian soldier. We are accountable to his family. We cannot hide these things,” he said.
Air force spokesperson Group Captain D N Ganesh, joint director of operations, showed photographs to prove the success of the operations by IAF planes in Mantho Dhalo, Kaksar and Drass areas. A daylight attack on June 28 on an enemy supply camp at Kukar Thang in the Mantho Dhalo area was a resounding success. The camp was severely damaged and explosion of a big fuel dump was seen by Indian troops who were just 800 meters away.
On Tuesday morning and night, the strikes at Jubar in Mantho Dhalo area as well as Kaksar destroyed camps. The new techniques of attacking targets, developed by the western air command, had proved successful at night too, Group Captain Ganesh said.
Selected hill features in Drass sector were also attacked round the clock. Regular reconnaissance missions to detect and monitor activities in the administrations camps of the Pakistanis had been fruitful, he said. The enemy’s major supply and administration camps at Kaksar, Mantho Dhalo and north of Mushkoh valley were under regular surveillance and were being attacked as required.
Col Singh said unprovoked firing by Pakistan continued at Keran, Macchal, Poonch, Uri, Krishnaghati, Bhimbergali, Naushera, Sunderbani and Palanwala sectors.
This unit provided accurate and devastating fire relentlessly, round the clock, inflicting very heavy damage and casualties on the enemy. The shock effect, casualties and destruction caused on the enemy positions by 108 medium Regiment significantly facilitated the infantry operations in the capture of Tololing Ridge, Point 5140, Tiger Hill and Point 4875 in the Dras Sector.
2. The over all performance of the unit has been exemplary and professionalism displayed by all ranks of the unit in the face of the enemy fire is highly commendable in the highest traditions of the Gunners and the Army.
3. In the Batalik Sector, in an exceptionally gallant operation, the troops of a battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles have captured Khalubar, a very dominating feature, on night 05/06 July 1999. This operation was personally led by Col. Lalit Rai, the Commanding Officer of the battalion, who despite being wounded on 04 July 1999, has refused to be evacuated. In this operation, 23 enemy soldiers have been killed and three of our soldiers have made the supeme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army. In addition, during the mopping up operations, so far, two heavy weapons viz, 12.7 mm KPVT and 14.5 mm KPVT have been recovered along with quantity of ammunition and documents belonging to 5 Northern Light Infantry. On our side, three soldiers have made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
5. Fierce fighting is still going on the Spur emanating from Tiger Hill top.
7. We have reliable inputs to reveal that Chitral Scouts are also being employed along with the Northern Light Infantry battalions in the pockets of intrusion.
8. Bravery is their hallmark
By Prakash Bhandari
The Times of India News Service
JAIPUR: The largest number of martyrs who have laid down their lives at Kargil are from Rajasthan. So far, 43 defence personnel from the state have died in the operation. Most of those who died are from Shekhawati and Marwar regions, from where the largest number of warriors hail.
In fact, down the ages, the brave men of Rajasthan have always been at the forefront of every major battle. During the First World War, as many as 2,000 soldiers from Jhunjhunu laid down their lives while fighting for the British. About 500 soldiers who fought in the Second World War are still getting their pension in the district.
The men rose to the occasion again in 1947-1948 when a fledgling free India was threatened by Razakars infiltrators who sneaked into the Kashmir Valley from the Pakistani side.
Among the soldiers who fought the Razakars was Peeru Singh, the first recipient of the ``Paramvir Chakra'', the highest gallantry award in the country. A company havildar of Rajputana Rifles, he was sent to the Teethwal sector in Kashmir to counter the Razakars intruders.
Peeru Singh, a native of Jhunjhnu district, was made the company major when the sixth battalion of the Rajputana Rifles was ordered to clear the intruders from the Ricchmar Pass in southern Teethwal sector.
With virtually no means of communications, Peeru Singh led his men through a treacherous hilly terrain on foot, ready to face the any surprise attacks by the lurking enemy.
After trudging through several miles on foot with heavy military hardware on their backs, the inevitable encounter took place when the intruders suddenly struck. But Peeru Singh was ready to face the enemy bullets. Taking up a vantage position, he fire up on the enemy's bunkers, causing heavy casualties.
Despite the spray of bullets, Peeru Singh crawled up to an enemy bunker and threw hand grenades on it to silence the guns which were spewing fire. He continuously fired from his sten gun, killing a large number of enemies. While fighting, he fell to a bullet which hit his head.
Even today, tales of how Peeru Singh fought and defeated the Razakars are recounted by the people of Jhunjhunu. In memory of this Paramvir Chakra recipient stands a bronze statute of Peeru Singh outside the Jhunjhunu railway station. The tales of his bravery still inspires many to join the army.
Jhunjhunu accounts for 25,000 soldiers who are serving the army at present. Among its notable sons is the former naval chief, Admiral Vijay Singh Shekhawat.
There is not a single village in the district from where someone or the other is not serving the armed forces. Jhunjhunu has produced 81 soldiers who have been decorated with various awards for bravery.
Rediff: Raveena Tandon in Kargil
I heard a delegation was going to visit the soldiers in Kargil. At once I said I wanted to be part of it. The injured from Kargil are taken for treatment to Srinagar. From there they're moved to Delhi. In Delhi they recoup and go back to fight if able.
I was completely overwhelmed as soon as I walked into Delhi hospital. I would've burst into tears but I knew people would say "she's acting." So I controlled my feelings, telling myself that I'm here for a job.
I went and sat with the soldiers. Some didn't at once recognise me, but then they said, "Yes, yes, you look different in your films..."
There was this Andhra soldier with whom I conversed in Telugu. I asked him if he had seen Banga burudu, my Telugu film. He said he had.
Then there were soldiers from Punjab and Maharashtra. All of us were from different places but we were all one there. Ironically, this fight has brought us all closer. I realised I hate war not only because it's loss of life but it's a loss of humanity, it's loss of love on this planet.
People might ask why did these artistes come here. But you should have seen how buoyed the soldiers were that we had come. I told them that we were able to walk on the streets because they were catching the bullets in their chests. I told them they were our brothers protecting us, and we had come to thank them.
I remember Ashish, a young jawan, who was paralysed. He was weeping. Not because of his misfortune. Not because of the excruciating pain he was in.
Ashish was weeping at his inability to get back to the battlefield.
I felt ashamed that I couldn't do anything. It gave me some measure of reassurance that I could at least create some awareness.
Since I came back it's been so much on my mind that everything else pales into insignificance. Everything else appears like we are jokers sitting here and crying about petty little sorrows. I felt so small. I felt that if I could use my face, my status to do anything to contribute to these people I would. It has absolutely changed the way I look at things.
We insisted on going to Kargil. Not everyone was given permission but we insisted and we had to sign that we were going at our own risk. We went to Kargil by chopper. From Delhi we went to Srinagar.
At 1630 hours we went to the Srinagar hospital. We heard incidents from the soldiers themselves. There was Captain Sangram, who had lost his leg. His wife was sitting with him. When I got up to leave would you believe what he told me? He held my hand and said:
"You know Raveena, I'm disappointed, I'd promised my head to the nation but those ******** only took my leg. I want to go back and give my head."
His wife started crying. I said, "Listen you should be proud of him, he is a hero."
When they saw Sunil Shetty they at once identified him as the actor in Border. "You are our son," they said.
I've taken all their names and numbers. I'm expecting calls and letters from them. There was this young soldier, Dipal, who had lost this right arm.
"I'm practising writing with my left hand and I will write to you," he told me.
I've already put across a proposal, wherein I'm going to organise with Pramod Mahajan's son to go there and entertain the soldiers. I'm planning to take a team there.
I could not see what happened in 1971 because I was born that year. I have never seen war. I'm seeing it now.
From Srinagar we flew over Drass, Batalik. We saw Tiger Hill from the army helicopter. We landed at Kargil. I remember thinking that it is all so beautiful till I saw the scars of war... Let me tell you about Angrez Singh.
He was walking behind his senior officer. Shelling was going on. One shell burst near him and blew off his leg. He didn't say a word, but picked up his leg, slung it round his neck and hopped to his destination. Then a bullet hit him and passed through his heart. But he's still alive.
"See, I didn't take the bullet in my back but right through my heart!" Singh told George Fernandes when he visited.
He has become a legend, a hero. This is the kind of spirit these people show. There are young boys, 18 and 19 years old -- and all they want is get well soon and get back. They were like us; they'd seen movies, they all knew my songs, and were just like anybody else. Yet, their spirit is amazing...
Just as we were departing, someone came and announced that we'd captured a new part. I cried so much that Salman Khan and Jaaved Jaffrey were hard put to convince me that they were going to be all right, that some of those injured would be okay again.
I want to tell everyone: Stop before we destroy this whole planet. Why are we doing it? WHAT FOR?
Actress Raveena Tandon spoke to Lata Khubchandani.
