BrahMos to adorn 'made-in-Kerala' tag
[Newindpress, 06 May 2005]

Kochi: The world's most supersonic cruise missile would fly with components with a 'made-in-Kerala' tag if the ongoing discussions between Brahmos Corporation and Keltron reach a meeting point. Keltron, which forayed into the sensitive world of defence production a few years ago, has been approached by the Brahmos Corporation, an Indo-Russian joint venture, for manufacturing parts of the missile. The Brahmos missile is expected to be inducted in Indian warships later this year. About 20 industries in India and 10 from Russia are taking part in the production of various components for the missile, which would be assembled in India. The production included fabrication of launchers, fire-control systems and accurate guidance systems. Top sources said that the Brahmos Corporation has asked Keltron for details about certain 'key components' and the possibility of their mass production.

"The Brahmos is a highly sophisticated system. Keltron can input many parts. We've already had talks with the Brahmos top brass. And, of course, we are hopeful," Keltron sources said. If Brahmos includes Keltron in its list of partners, it will be a real shot in the arm for the sick state-owned unit. "If something materialises, we will be entering the scenario when mass production of the missile begins. And there are several components that we can manufacture. This will boost our turnover also," sources said. The Brahmos has already finalised the design for its air version. Development of subsystems are also on. Its land version, which can home on a target from a group of structures, was successfully test-fired in Pokharan last year.

The Keltron has already been acknowledged as a reliable partner with the Navy entrusting it with the task of making process-based ground mines. Already more than 100 mines have been developed and Keltron is expecting Navy to place fresh orders. "The Navy needs about 600 such mines that are placed on sea-bed to form a protective network. Each mine costs about Rs 17 lakh and this will be a huge order for us," sources said. Sensing the huge possibility, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy himself has written to the Union Defence Minister urging him to consider Keltron for future programmes. "If Kerala MPs can exert some pressure and favour a decision, it will go a long way in bailing out Keltron," sources pointed out.

India Unveils Hypersonic Demonstrator Model
[Aviation Week & Space Technology, 22 May 2005]

India has unveiled a model of its highly ambitious hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle. The country's Defense Research and Development Laboratory is carrying out study work into a hypersonic air vehicle possibly using a dual-mode ramjet/scramjet engine. The vehicle fore-body and intake ramp configuration are clearly visible, and reflect airframe-engine design combinations intended for flight in the Mach 5-7 regime. One option would be to launch on a ballistic missile with the test vehicle being deployed at around 20 km (12.5 miles). A similar concept has been explored in Russia.
