INS Beas commissioning

Warship INS Beas to be commissioned
[Press Trust of India, 10 July 2005]

KOLKATA: INS Beas, an advanced guided missile frigate, would be commissioned tomorrow for deployment in security operations under the Western Naval Command. The third of the Brahmaputra class guided missle frigates, INS Beas, would be commissioned at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd here in the presence of Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakash. The warship, which followed INS Brahmaputra and INS Betwa, would be assigned to the Western Fleet and be placed under the operational and administrative control of the Western Naval Command.

Announcing this here, Naval Officer in-charge (West Bengal) Commodore A K Patnaik, told reporters that the warship was a ''multi-role reincarnation of old Beas, which had earned distinction in Naval history rendering tremendous service during 1960-1992.'' The new ship, built at a cost of about Rs 900 crore, has extensive array of long range sensors - radars, sonars and electronic warfare equipment, which enabled it to simultaneously address targets operating in the surface, underwater and air. The ship could sustain speeds in excess of 30 knots (about 55 kmph) and was capable of covering over 4,500 nautical mules without replenishment.

GRSE chief general manager Commander Ranjit Deb said the shipyard had a current order from the navy for three landing ship tanks, four fast attack crafts and four anti-submarine corvettes. The first of the LST and two FACs would be delivered in 2005-6 while the rest would be commissioned in the next few years. Commander Deb said with the productivity improvement at the GRSE, INS Beas was built in five years, much less than the time taken for building the previous two ships. ''The total manhours taken for building the ship was 89 lakh as compared to 120 lakh manhours required for previous ships. This has resulted in the savings of about Rs 100 crore,'' the CGM said. The 125 feet long frigate was equipped with 16 'URAN' surface-to-surface missiles and can carry two advanced light helicopters. It also has been provided with a multi-layered anti-aircraft/anti-missile defence system and fitted with the Barak anti-missile defence system and anti-submarine capability, he said.

Chief of Naval staff Admiral Arun Prakash formally commissioned the multi-weaponary 3,600 tonne vessel "INS Beas" at the dock of Public sector Gardenreach Shipbuilders and Engineering Company(GRSE) here today. The "INS Beas" is the third Brahmaputra class frigate and has been built at a cost of Rs 900 crores. The INS Beas will be a member of the front line deep sea fleet of the India Navy, and will be placed under the operational control of the Western Naval Command.

The vessel has been armed with 16 Russian made URAN surface to surface missiles, each having a range of 40 km, a fully automatic Israeli made multi-layered anti-aircraft and anti-missile defence system. It also has a BARAK long range laser guided canon with a range of 82 km, medium range HUMSA sonar for detecting and targeting submarines and all underwater attacking systems and a fully integrated anti-air missile defence capability and the anti-submarine capability. The 125 metre long ship with a displacement of 3600 tonnes can cruise at a maximum speed of 28 knots (55 km) carrying a total of 28 officers and 270 sailors for up to 4500 km at a stretch. INS Beas can operate in all environments, including one that is contaminated by nuclear, chemical or biological fallout.

Launching the warship, naval chief Admiral Arun Prakash said the Navy has approved a tie up with France for production of submarines and is awaiting a nod from the government. "There is a proposal before the government for starting a submarine production line in Mazgaon docks. So after going through due process of selection and evaluation, we had made a proposal to government of India that we should produce six submarines of the Scorpene design which are of French origin," he said. The Indian Navy, the world's fifth largest navy, operates a total of 140 vessels including an aircraft carrier, missile-capable warships, minesweepers, over a dozen submarines and the latest aircraft. Many of the warships are of indigenous design and have been constructed in Indian shipyards.
