China PLAN to exercise with Thailand, India and Pakistan
Chinese naval fleet leaves for exercises with Indian Navy

Hangzhou: A Chinese naval fleet today left for a visit to India, Pakistan and Thailand during which the vessels will hold the first joint naval exercises in foreign sea areas. The fleet of Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), comprising of a 'Shenzhen' missile destroyer and a 'Weishanhu' depot ship, is expected to hold joint military drills, the first ever by the Chinese Navy in alien sea areas, with navies of the three nations. Sources with the fleet said the drills will focus on items in non-traditional areas, such as joint search- and- rescue exercises, the Xinhua news agency reported from Zhangjiang port in southern China's Guangdong province. Passing four straits, the fleet is expected to enter the Arabian Sea via northern part of the Indian Ocean. The whole voyage is almost 10,000 sea miles and the sail will last over 40 days. Destroyer Shenzhen, China's self-developed missile destroyer, has visited 11 nations in four previous trips. Weishanhu paid its maiden tour to foreign lands, the report said. Three Indian Naval ships had visited Shanghai port in Oct, 2003 and held joint exercises with the PLAN vessels.

The Indian Navy's first 'Unmanned Aerial Vehicle' (UAV) squadron will be commissioned in Kochi in January 2006, Flag Officer Commander-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, Vice Admiral S C S Bangara said. Addressing a press conference on board the INS Krishna, anchored off the Southern Naval Command's headquarters in Kochi, Vice Admiral Bangara said that the Navy's first UAV unit, which is presently designated as the Intensive Flying & Training Unit (IFTU) since its induction nearly two years ago, will formally be commissioned as a squadron on 06 January 2006, by the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakash.
This will be the first Naval UAV squadron, to be stationed at Kochi. Later, more squadrons may be set up elsewhere, he added. Describing the induction of the UAVs in the services following the Kargil conflict as extremely useful, Vice Admiral Bangara said that they were ideal for getting real-time information on anything happening on land or sea. Coming in two versions, short-range and long-range, the UAVs are equipped with state-of-the-art radars and night-time viewing capabilities. A newly built Fast Attack Craft named INS Bangaram will also be commissioned and based at Kochi next month, he added. Also, for the first time, the President's Fleet Review (PFR) will be held at Vishakapatnam on February 12 and 13. More than 50 ships of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and merchant ships will participate in the event.
