India Pinpoints Cause Of Launch Center Fire
[Aviation Week & Space Technology, 09 Aug 2004

A committee investigating the February solid propellant fire at India's Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota in South India has found the incident was caused by a "propellant leak between two sliding metallic surfaces." The committee's report states that the leaked propellant was ignited by friction-induced heating during removal of casting fixtures. The mishap killed seven workers and critically injured two (AW&ST Mar. 1, p. 29).

India Developing Recoverable Satellite
[Aviation Week & Space Technology, 23 Aug 2004

The Indian Space Research Organization is completing development of a 1,100-lb. recoverable spacecraft planned to be launched from India in 2005. The Space Recovery Experiment (SRE) is designed to carry out microgravity experiments including metals research, formation of composite materials in microgravity, and measuring the effects of space on living microbes. It will be launched as a piggyback payload with India's Cartosat-2 advanced remote sensing spacecraft, which will carry a single large panchromatic camera. While Cartosat-2 will remain in 400-mi. polar orbit, the SRE will be kept aloft only for several weeks. Then it will be commanded to reenter for a parachute landing and ocean recovery. Although a civilian project, the vehicle uses materials and other technologies from India's ballistic missile warhead program. India will use its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) for the mission, which is planned for the latter half of next year (AW&ST July 26, p. 23).
