Sea Harrier crash-lands at Dabolim
[Herald, 16 December 2004]

A Navy Sea Harrier aircraft crashed landed at the Dabolim International Airport on Thursday morning. However, there were no casualties as the two pilots, including a trainee pilot, ejected to safety. The incident is reported to have taken place at about 11:30 a.m. According to information gathered, the Sea Harrier crashed on the runway during landing at a short height and the two pilots were reportedly safe and escaped without any injuries. The naval authorities were unwilling to provide the names of the pilots, who escaped without any injuries. The Dabolim international airport had been temporarily closed to air traffic and scheduled flights from Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Delhi were advised to remain on hold at the respective airports. The naval authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. As the wreckage was seen lying along the run way around the Varnapuri end, the air traffic was remained paralysed till 2:15 p.m. At about 2:15 p.m., naval authorities informed the respective airports about the opening of the runway and only an hour later did flights begin to arrive at the airport. However, airlines sources informed the Herald that all scheduled flights were disrupted following the incident and as expected, most airlines arrived late and subsequently left Goa airport beyond the normal schedule. A Tomas Cook charter flight was also held up along with an Indian Airlines flight for a considerable period of time as the flights had arrived before the incident took place. At the Dabolim airport, passengers were seen anxiously waiting to get to their respective destinations. However it is learnt that the airline officials made arrangements that the passengers were provided with lunch at the airport restaurant.
