India, Russia to hold first army exercise
[Xinhua via COMTEX, 02 Dec 2004]

India and Russia announced Thursday that they would hold their first-ever joint army exercise next year and increase their investment in a joint venture that makes the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. The announcement was made after the conclusion of a two-day meeting of the Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation, the Indo-Asian News Service reported. Indian Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his Russian counterpart Sergei Ivanov told a joint news conference here that the two sides had agreed to sign an agreement to protect intellectual property rights associated with Russian military technology transferred to India. Ivanov said the two sides had transformed their long-standing military ties from a 'buyer-seller relationship' into a strategic partnership to jointly develop hi-tech military hardware like the BrahMos that can be sold to other countries.

Army orders 600 MPVs developed by DRDO, Israel
[Hindustan Times, 11 December 2004]

The Indian Army has placed orders for 600 Mine Protecting Vehicles (MPVs), jointly developed by the Defence & Research Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel. MPVs can prove to be very useful in combating terrorism and its utility would be further enhanced, once a remote control weapon system is mounted on it, Ordnance Factories Chairman and Director General PK Misra said. Misra, who was in Pune to attend the 56th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Aeronautical Society of India, said the MPV was being exported to Nepal, Ivory Coast and some other countries and would be on public display during the coming Republic Day parade in New Delhi. He said 39 DRDO factories were involved in manufacture of land-based battlefield equipment. Their turnover was expected to touch Rs.7000 crore during 2005-06 from Rs.6700 crore at present, he added. Misra said as a government policy, there could never be privatisation of defence units like DRDO but they can always synergise with the private sector and this is what they were doing. He cited example of Tata making different types of vehicles for the defence forces. Misra said, "We are not dependent on government funds but are raising our resources internally for our operations and research besides paying dividend to the government."
