Just taking a guess. Chan could be short for Chandra.

Israel, UK keen on joint exercises with India, says official

Posted on 10 Jan 2006

Kalaikunda (West Bengal): A joint India-Singapore air exercise is now on at Kalaikunda Air Force base in West Bengal.

Air Commodore A Saikia of the IAF said such exercises provided opportunities for both sides to enhance operations and logistics management.

Saikia also added that a number of air forces were keen to hold joint exercises with India.

“A number of air forces in the world are very keen and interested in exercising with us. Some of the air forces, which have already done certain exercises, are South Africa, French Air force, USF, Singapore Air force. And there are many other who are wanting to exercise with us like UK's Royal Air Force, Israeli Air Force and so on,” he said.

CPM nod for air exercises

Kolkata, Jan. 11. — The CPI-M’s vehement opposition to Indo-US joint military air-exercise at Kalaikunda air base notwithstanding, the party would not mind the IAF doing the same with RAF of UK and Israeli air force, both known as the strongest allies of America.

“These exercises can not be equated with the Indo-US joint exercises. US military aircrafts and other hardware were brought in here. But we are not opposed to any individual countries coming to conduct air exercises in Kalaikunda for training. In fact, the air base has been equipped for such purpose and is known as a good place to do that. We have nothing against it,’’ the state CPI-M state secretary Mr Anil Biswas said today.

“Our air force can offer them support too,’’ he added when it was pointed out that IAF would engage in same kind of joint exercises with the RAF and Israeli counterparts.

The CPI-M has not raised an eyebrow at the ongoing joint Indo-Singapore air exrecise at Kalaikunda. The Air Officer Commanding, Kalaikunda Air Base, Air Commodore A Saikia, said on Monday that the RAF and Israeli air force are interested in joint exercises with the IAF.
