Indian Air Force team leaves for South Africa

Thiruvananthapuram, A 100-strong Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent left here Monday for South Africa for multi-nation war games that will be witnessed by visiting Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

The air forces of South Africa, Germany, Britain and the US will be represented in Exercise Golden Eagle.
The IAF contingent, led by Group Captain R. Bhasin, comprises six Mirage 2000 fighter-bombers, two IL-78 midair refuellers and two IL-76 transport aircraft.

The IAF vice chief, Air Marshal Michael McMahon, saw off the contingent at the Shangumugham airbase here.
The IAF team will reach South Africa Thursday after stopovers at Male and Mauritius. It will return in the first week of October.

Exercise Golden Eagle comes in the wake of the hugely successful Exercise Cooperative Cope Thunder 04-01 in Alaska in July during which IAF pilots matched their skills with their counterparts from the US and NATO air forces and came out with flying colours.
"Our participation in Exercise Cooperative Cope Thunder 04-01 brought laurels to the country, thanks to the high precision displayed by the fighter pilots in penetrating air defences and scoring direct hits on ground targets in the mountain ranges," the air chief, Air Chief Marshal S. Krishnaswamy, had said after the contingent returned.

Air forces from the Asia-Pacific and NATO countries such as Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Germany and Britain too participated.
Early this year, a similar exercise was conducted by the IAF at Gwalior, where the US Air Force participated with F-15Cs and the combat skills of Indian pilots drew much appreciation.

A joint exercise has been planned in India with the Singapore Air Force in October, with the visitors flying with six F-16 fighters.
The IAF plans to hold another round of such exercises in France, Britain and the US next year.

yeah yeah. whatever.

That picture doesn't look like a good sign. Or maybe I don't really know much about ocean flying.

The aircraft's configured for ferrying with three drop tanks and will most certainly also need an IFR as well.

Well, carrying those drop tanks inspite of having a tanker or two on call is not convincing, is it? Or maybe they are carrying them just in case ...

Even the Jags flew across the Atlantic with drop tanks.

it alllows u to reduce number of tankings, increases safety diversion ranges and on long range missions most M2Ks carry atleast 2 drop tanks anyway.

A Flanker would just take a deep drink at the beer keg in Kochi and fly direct to Male, with a 5 min diversion enroute to buzz and harass a wayfaring B1 from Diego

I'm sure you know it but its carried just in case :P

I don't think there is ever a 100% guarantee of being able to tank up whenever needed. Tankers may develop a snag and need to divert. Carrying drop tanks increases the safety margin and probably gives you more options on diversionary airfields.

There are no wet points on the Su-27 family...although the Su-34 'might' be an exception.

Darn! anyway cant be fund this small improvement ? 1500km of
hi-alt radius is too small for my liking. that canoe tank with say
2 tons of extra fuel should permit another 400km of extra radius.

Excuse me? The Su-30MKI's ferry range when all it's internal fuel tanks are topped up (10K Kg) is around 4500 km. (SU-27P N595 piloted by Anatoly kvochur set a range of 4000km). Normal high altitude combat range is 3400 km and 1500 km at low altitude. This is is why it never needs drop tanks.

IAF visit to coincide with AAD 2004

Planning moves into top gear for AAD 2004
http://www.airnews.co.za/showstory.asp?id=486

Although a lot will depend on the weather during the two public days on September 24 and 25 – Trade Days are September 21 to 23 – the organisers are expecting around 125000 people, up 25000 from the exhibition in 2002.

FOREIGN AIR FORCES Foreign air forces will also again feature in this year’s display. A highlight will be the attendance by the Indian Air Force that will be sending several Mirage 2000s supported by an IL-76 transport aircraft. This is a coup for the show organisers, as this air force’s aircraft are rarely seen outside their own country.

Brahmos to be put on sale display

For the first time, the supersonic Indo-Russian cruise missile Brahmos will be put on display-cum-sale at the South African Defence Expo scheduled to be held from September 21.

India has recently started commercial production of the 300-km range, land, air and underwater launched missile and its display at the Pretoria show indicates that New Delhi will go ahead with its exports.

Besides the cruise missile, India would be showcasing its main battle tank MBT Arjun, Advance Light Helicopter and other armaments at the expo, which will culminate in a dazzling African air show.

Minister of State for Defence B K Handique would be heading the Indin delegation to the Defence expo.

A Defence Ministry Spokesperson said all the nine Defence public sector undertakings, Ordnance Factory Board and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) would be participating.

Coinciding with the Defence expo, six Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft would be carrying out first-ever joint air exercises with the South African Air Force.
