IAF STATION- LOHEGAON -0005 HRS
-----------------------------------------
Chief station engineer Group captain Virendra sing was fuming . A light shower in the evening made the runway slippery and the air saghara flight from delhi did what it is never supposed to do and definitely not today -over shot the runway and lodged itself in the soft ground blocking up the main runwat for goo atleast for a couple of hours . Lifting it up with hydraulic screw jacks borrowed from the Dragons have proved futile . Now squadron leader patel have hitched four tractors to the nose wheel of the mud stuck B-737 and trying to pull it out . The massive earth mover stood ready to push it out of the runway fringe if Patels effort didnot bear fruit in another 30 minutes . It would be a big loss to the airlines or the insurance companies or whatever he thought maybe it will not come to that .

Inside the massive hangers the sukhois were getting ready too for the long escort mission ahead . Uploading the R-77 s were complete and the weapon dollies carrying the R-73 s were waiting their turn . A seperate group checked the Gasha alighnment for one last time and clipped in the 150 round box magazine in its assigned slot within the airframe fed in the belt lead into gun and locked it into place . Outside the long line of fuel tankers were on hold till ammo upload is complete .

The pilots apparently were not much involved in the arming process as they had a relaxed light dinner of chapatis chicken curry dahi and alu gobi
and lots and lots of water . Extended flights are always very dehydrating from the dry pure oxygen they would be breathing to the nervous tension of combat .By the time they will comeback most of them would loose about 1-1.5 kg of body wt mostly due to loss of water . A short nap and then to final ops briefing

IAF STATION JODHPUR - 015 HRS
------------------------------------------
Senior logistics officer Wing comander Bhargava cursed the technician who brought in the cheerful news that main fuel transfer pump used for transfering jet a from bulk storage tanks to transporters is leaking hevily and need to be shut down for a few hours . The standby pump is operational but due to sand inf=gestion in the suction filter has a comparitively reduced out put .Net ressult fuelling cycle extended by roughly 25 minutes . This meant weapon uploading should start immediately thought Bhargava as he picked up the intercom to chief engineers office .

The pilots moved around thier aircraft checking for any sign of hysraulic leakage or loose undercarraige locking pins and the cleanliness of the weapon pylons for cracks or deformity . Some doubtful ones were brought to the notice of the technicians and immediately attended to . None then showed any sign of fear but they knew quite a few of them will not be able to come back from perhaps the most risky mission of this war .

In the the adjoning hanger the USAF crews joned IAF technicians load upand arm the massive bunker busters onto Jaguars centre line pylon and complete the aircraft-weapon interfacing operation. At the same time with their personal hand held weapon diagonistic tool checked the internal wiring and sensors of each and every weapon so uploaded .It was a laborious process but ther was no short cut available .

USS NIMITZ - SOUTHERN ARABIAN SEA
---------------------------------------------
It was routine landing for Lt commander Reynolds as he lined up in his hawkeye for approach to the distant carrier the meat ball squarely on his sight -all white confirming he is in correct glidescope and sink rate text book perfect as he approached the angled flight deck for one more all green touch down .

It is said weather in this part of arabian seas is the most unpredictable in the world next only to south china seas . A strong wind from south east built up suddenly as the large turbo prop got commited to land flaps down and under carriage out .Thelanding systems officer had no clue what hit the comparitively stable aircraft as the hawk eye got violently thrown around in the ensuing wind shear .Lt comander Reynold did what he was trained to do applied full power and pushed the undercarraige level u for a take off and go around but the turbulant bow wind robbed him of the lift and the hawkeye crashed hard on the flight deck with the undercarraige collapsing under its weight because of the earlier retract command and tangled up with the 4 line of heavy duty arrestor wires in an unseemly mess . Fire tenders rushed at covered the aicraft in foam as the visibly shaken pilot and his crew came out of the emrgency exit one by one .

Net ressult
All flight ops were suspended for the time being .
Hornets low on fuel on were diverted to Carl vinson for recovery and refueling and will join the carrier group only after several hours .
The B-52 s were without escort whcih were supposedto join them west of srilanka which was not a serious threat area but then too much was at stake .

INS VIRAT
-------------
Almost 1/2 the sea harrier squadron took ro air on reciept of the SOS from USS Nimitz .Four of them flew south wards to intercept the projected flight path of incomming heavy bombers and would escort them all the way into indian air space and the rest took over standard combat air patrol duty over the jont carrier task force . The protective screen was may be not what the USN is used too but then at that moment it was accepted with heartfelt thanks .

Why do u hv to rely on US for disabling Paks nuclear weapon, why can't we hv a anti-ballistic missile, like ARROW-II to blow up their missile. Let them launch their missile, we shud be able to destroy it.

CONDOUR FLIGHT - 200 KMS WEST OF SRILANKAN COAST-0145 HRS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-sir we are getting sea harrier escorts from indian navy for the next leg called out lt col rebeca .Hornets canot join us since Nimitz flight deck is out of ops for next few hours as she read out the tele textmessage on her data link monitor
Col Tim did not react ,a vetern of many missions over Iraq and Afganistan goof ups were nothing new to him and like all seasoned pilots i strtegic air force he took the new piece of information in his stride a hemade the nessecery course changes to his second way point . Simultaneously he also pulled back o the throttle afew notches to reduce power to 80% max to conserve fuel and bleed off a little of the air speed .

- condour flight -navy escort flight harpoon -flight level 350 joining up
-roger that harpoon flight reducing altitude to 30000 and speed to 450 knots -thanks and out

The giant 24 bomber formation folowed the leader in silence and reformed at lower altitude and reformed to resume their long journey north .

Col Tm looked out atthe wings of the giant bomber at almost 160ft they were impresive but not very good looking as was his aircraft . Affectinately called by those who fly her as Buff or bad ugly fat fellow she had seen service for more than 50yrs from vietnam to afganistan with a very few lost in combat . A total of 744 were built out of which a total of 94 are now in service .The thin aluminium skin looks wrinkled when unpressurised and only when presurised and at altitude look like a normal aircraft surface .

The B-52 H was essentially designed for strategic missions which in plain terms means drop nuclear bombs and later on air launched cruise missiles when it was considered not safe for the large bomber to penetrate the heavily defended soviet air space . The forward looking infrared sensitive camera and ultra low light tv camera makes it an accurate all weather weapo delivery platform and the 25000 kgs weapon load makes it very effective at that. With a fuel capacity approximately 180000 ltrs allows it an unparalled unrefuelled range and its eight Pratt and whitney engines providing 17000 lb thrust each gives it an agility not normally seen in heavy bombers of this class .

- condour flight you shall be entering indian air space in 5 minutes - navy flight signing off now - have a nice flight
-Thank you navy - happy landing intoned lt col Rebeca as she clicked off the secured helmet mike and the bomber took a shallow diving bank to 30000 ft to starboard to make thier presence known to indian civilian air trafic control as previously agreed upon .

does not USN CVNs have the ability to launch 2 a/c at a time??
in that case they would be able to launch teh hornets even if one route is damaged.

IAF STATION LOHEGAON -0200 HRS
------------------------------------------
The lightly damaged B-737 was at last extricated from soft mud after air bags borrowed from air force stores were inflated up and four tractors pulled togetther to get her onto the tarmac . She once again taxied under her own power to the civilian parking apron and went into extensive check . The mess on runway was being quickly hosed out as the Su -30 pilots started thier preflight check and then strapping the sleek but large interceptor to thier back .

Some distance away the radar intercept officer could now locate the large green blips indicating the approaching B-52 s .He noted they have already split up into four seperate smaller but more managable strike groups and he designated them condor alpha -condor beta-condor charlie-condor delta and passed on the new desination to the senior air trafic controller on duty at the control tower .

The flankers looked awe some with 14 air to air missiles each 6 R-77 extended version and 8 `R73 s in double launchers it looked they can take on the entire pakistani air force if need be (which to some extent was true ) . The sixteen Su-30 mki s were indeed a formidable air dominance capability about to be launched into combat to protect the unprotected B-52 s from whatever remained of pakistani airforce if they should so decide the chalenge them .

PHALCON FLIGHT -100 KMS EAST OF UDAIPUR-0205 hrs
-------------------------------------------------------
Air commodore T bhasin looke on the radar scope . Even though outside his "official " detection and control range he could clearly make out the american bombers in four seperate flight groups flying 110 kms west of Dabolim navy base at flt level 400 .Brig Steve USAF was also watching the formation intently . The ATC communication from lohegaon was put on the speaker phone . Since the flankers would launch in east west direction towards Mumbai ther was no danger of foul up with the Buffs during initial climb out but still he felt it will be better if the horizanral seperation is increased some what .Brig Steve concurred .

- Condor flight-phalcon 1 turn right 060 maintain flight level 400 -acknowledge
- The raspy voice of B 52 group commander came over the R/T
- Roger that Phalocon 1 -turning right 060-flt level 400 .

Col tim selected the intra plane frequency and passed on the instruction to his team . All the 24 B-52 s diped thier wings in unison and started the slow turn to starboard all controlled by onboard navigational computers and watched carefully by the navigator bombardiers . At leat for this part of the flight the pilots didnot have much to do except stre at the bank of instruments and ofcourse the dark sky outward

IAF STATION -JODHPUR - 0230 HRS
-----------------------------------------
The tedious process of fuelling up the large formation was atlast over and the weapon technicians strarted loading up the floggeres with air to ground ammo mainly 500 kg iron bombs , 57 mm rockets, a few of them with LGB s and 300 round box magazine for the six barreled Gasha .About a quarter of them also carried standard russian anti-radar missiles and cluster bombs to take out the manpads and trpple a batteries .It was hectic like always .

 "Blow up their missile"??? DUM**** (I don't think you live in India  )
Things you should consider about making a comment like that-:

1)The impact time after launch could be as less as 4 minutes.Reaction time..during the Cold War between US and USSR the impact time was around 28 mins.

2)What about the radiation leak even if we intercept it
3)ARROW II deployment and efficiency.
4)What if they are able to sneak even one missile...if they launch ,I am sure they won't just launch one, giving us a second strike opportunity.

Arrow or the Akash may be PAC-3 should be there as a back up if they are able to sneak one missile through.

Only thing ,I would probably like be added in this is the Israeli contribution or atleat a briefing from a Israeli's on the mission, since they have been planning such a raid for ages.

Also my friend if you have been following Shanker's plot, we are not relying on the US ,we are teaming up with them for a common cause.

PS: Amazing plot Shanker, keep it coming.

PAF RADAR STATION -LAHORE
--------------------------------------
Squadron leader Imtiaz khan looked at the monitors showing usal war time activity ,nothing unusal as yet .The skies over pakistan were unusally quite for the last few days barring few probing strikes by IAF mig 21 near kahuta and chakla and a single strike by by a four aircraft mirage 2000 formation to Peshwar which caused limited damage to the airfield .Something just didnot seem right thought he as he pushed up the power setting to max for an extended search .

PHALCON 1 50 KM NORTH OF UDAIPUR -0230 HRS
----------------------------------------------------------
Squadron leader Dinesh scrolled down the platform status monitor as the two generals discussed the comming mission including a basic change in attack philosophy . The list on his screen and their status looked impressive by and standard and he would not have traded placeswith those poor pakistanis at this moment even if he is offered the 2 crores by Amitabh himself.

As he confirmed the establishment of secured encrypted data link between the Phalcon and the individual ATC as well as the aircrafts on ground in multiple bases a massive force came under the direct command of the two generals aboard . Never seen since gulf war 2 it was a formidable force indeed.

- USS Carl Vinson - 12 F-18 Ready to launch -SEAD -Kahuta
- USS Nimitz - Flight deck being cleared expected to be op ready in 3 hrs
- INS Vikramaditya - 16 Mig 29 k s ready to launch-air escort F-18s
- INS Virat - on fleet air defense duty - not available for the mission

IAF LOHEGAON - 16 X Su 30 mki - air escort B-52
- 24 B-52 H - strike mission at multiple locations

IAF JODHPUR

6x6 Mig 27 for SEAD mission
4x3 Mig 29k counter air over Kahuta zone .

Reserve available
- 12 mig 29s Jamnagar
- 12 Mirage 2000 Gwalior

Rules of engagement specified use of no air to ground cruise missiles and "minimum "collataral damage . How you do that with a dumb bomb strike from B-52s and three dozen floggers is something to be discovered inthe course of the mission .

USS CARL VINSON -0300 HRS - 13O KMS FROM KARACHI
-------------------------------------------------------------------
It was still dark but the darkness seems to have brightened up somewhat on eastern horizon thoght Lt commander Jack as he strpped himself on to the super hornet arguable the best carrier borne aircraft in the world in terms of payload and avionics but in a dogfight may be the Mig 29k s will have the advantage

Just infront the dirty green jacketed catapult technicians were busy hooking up the nose wheel tie bar to the catapult hook as the jet blast deflector came up on triple hydraulic arms at 70 degree to flight deck so that the hot exhuast from the twin engines is led away and up from the restrained jet . The cat officer signalled engine start and Jack pushed on the ignition buttons first left and then right and then slowly pushed up the throttle to full and then into reheat zone . Engine tachmeter rapidly climbed to near red and exhaust temperature at 92% max . The cathooked took the thrust and bent a little .The slight deflection measured by the computer and it released the wheel restraint . The air speed indicator jumped to 100-150 175 knots and tthe de ck vibrations suddenly died off . As he got squeezed into the ejection seat at almost 4g force of the catpult launch Jack stred straight ahead unblinking for the moment of lift off -took control and allowed the heavy aircraft to fly for a few second level as the air speed indicator crossed 230 knots he slapped the undercarriage up and gently rolled the hornet in a shallow climbing turn at 500 ft he retracted the flaps and his wing man formed up on him as they both dove for the deck ,barely 50 ft over the wave tops they raced for the coastline at 600 knots . There was no time to talk

PN SHAJAHAN -KARACHI NAVAL DOCK YARD
------------------------------------------------
LT Kader was bored as he fiddled with the contrls of his radar scope aboard PN Shajahan on patrol duty outside karachi harbour He decided to have a smoke -nothing much was happening anyway .

He was dead wrong ,as he stepped out the jet blast of Jacks hornet shook the ship as he tore northwards to his designated strike grid unmindful of the lone pakmistani destroyer which some what came into his ingress path and not detected . Jack reported to comander air group and also strike comand aboard Phalcon 1 .

Kader rushed in to his UHF tranciever and screamed out the warning -but is was too little and too late . For all his bravery he will get shann e pakistan award (posthumously) . Asingle Mig 29K on CAP recieved its target co-ordinates and launched 2 sea eagle anti ship missiles within 5 minutes . This was folowed by 4 more of the same type launched by the 2 seakings immdiately . The striken aged pakistani destroyer went down slowly with all hands aboard most of them sleeping without knowing what hit them .

CVNs have four catapults two waist and two bow. in a rush they can launch one a/c every 20 secs, then a few mins to attach four more waiting a/c and send them out. F18 launch has always been fully automatic and hands-off, pilot just sits tight until a.c climbs to a certain state...the F14 had stick takeoff and was much more scary per pilots.

even if two catapults break down, two are still left so probably they can launch about 1 a/c every minute even then!

I think in 10 mins they can put a squadron of F18s aloft if push came to shove...

Pakis'd be sh--scared to have even two CVNs bearing down on them not to add the indians and B52s into the mix.

Shanker, pls ensure each B52 is loaded with 80 JDAMs/JSOW and the initial strike would ofcourse be JASSM-ER flying stealthily at treetop level !!

IAF STATION PATHANKOT -O315 HRS
-------------------------------------------
Wing comander Rustogi was an instructor pilot but todays critical missionnature have forced him to take a crash course in operations flying and now with his "fresh " qualification looked at his aircraft for the pre flight go around . It looked good even in the flood lit hanger as the technicians mannualy pushed it out in to the parking apron . As he stepped over the cockit ledge and initiated preflight the starter cart was already hooked up and the safety pins with bright streamers taken off .

- Zenith flight -cleared to start engine -contact ground when ready to taxi
-roger that tower -starting engine -shall contact ground for taxi clearence in 5 minutes

Alongside 3 other fulcrums were doing the same -they will be the vanguard of strike into Kahuta complex .

Rostogi made the ignitioncontact firstthe left engine and then right and within minutes both were running with its normal inermittant roar -all guages ingreen
- Ground Zenith flight ready to taxi
-Zenith flight taxi to and hold short of runway 29 -contact tower when ready to take off

Rustogi gingerly released the parking brake with engine power at idle and then a slight touch on the throttle -engine power 12% and the fulcrum rolled out of the apron into adjoining taxiway as he engaged the the nose wheel steer button which would allow him to steer the aircraft with rudder and moved towards the runway end nearly 4000 ft awy .One by one other three 29s followed the flight leader onwards to runway

-Tower -zenith flight -request immediate take off clearence - 5000 ft
- Roger that Zenith flight -you are cleared for single take off at 60 seconds interval -contact phalcon one on UHF ch 2 at altitude
- Rolling now

As wing comander rostogi stepped on the brake and pushed the throttle lever all the way forward the the powerful fulcrum nosed down nd then leaped forward as the brakes were released .The twin towers of flame comming out of the after burners pushed it to take off speed of 170 knots in less than 1500 ft of runway and Rostogi wished the russian ejection seats were a bit more comfortable as the super acceleration pushed him into it without remorse as he pulled on the stick ,retracted undercarriage and rolled off the runway track to allow a clear climb out for those following . Even before he has leveled out his wingman Squadron leader Dilbag was in position and they both leveled out at 150 mtrs over radar indicated ground level retracting flaps to cruise position and the air speed indiating 1040 kms /hr as the Phalocn came on line

- Zenith flight - phalcon 1 -i have control - reduce altitude to 50 mtrs -turn left heading 235 -maintain present speed - you are still not weapons free

Rustogi hated this aspect of awac control that over his weapons but then they have a better situational picture and much more command seniority so he did what he was told - no discussions .

As he did a slow aileron roll to left on his rearview mirror he cold see his wing man mirroring his every move 1000 ft behind and 100ft away .The vertical seperation was zero. Rostogi loved his aircraft -she was so easy to control and so responsive to his needs as if it was not a machine but almost a living thing a slight touch on throttles and light push on the stick is all that took to move her in circles around anything that flies and that includes the vaunted falcons and eagles .

The modifications of Mig 29k for launching sea eagles were done by the same engineering group who did the modification work in Mirage 2000s pylons to enable it launch R-73 . When the mig 29 k s were ordered indian navy still had a sizable inventory of sea eagles and comparitively derby stock was somewhat low .The work entailed essentially replacing the center line pylon designed for launcing R-77 extended version with an existing pylons from sea harriers and then rewiring the data feed and ignition cicuitry interface including incorporation of certain power transformers in the Migs circuitry to enable it launch sea eagles . Not much publicity was given to this success just like in case of mirage 2000s OF iaf firing R-73s .

Very few were privy to this and air commodore Vinod on board phalcon 1
was one of them -he quitely let a smile slip as his decision to support this conversion paid rich dividend .

KARACHI NUCLEAR POWER PLANT-0315 HRS-F-18X6
-------------------------------------------------------------
Lt commander Jack looked back pulled the stick forward a little priori to bomb release . He was carrying 4 x1000 kg laser guided bombs the and his pre selected target was the heavy hydroge distilation column of the heavy water plant adjoining the karachi nuclear power plant complex. Here Here the heavier hyisotope of hydrogen having an atomic mass of 2 compared to 1 of normal hydrogen is distilled from normal liquid hydrogen in a cryogenic distillation column producing 99.5 % pure heavy hydrogen or deuterium which is then oxidised to form heavy water which in its turn acts as a reactor coolant in heavy water colled reactors .The reactors again produce plutonium from uranium eiether enriched or natural which go to make the fission bomb implossion type . Jacks mission was to destroy the first member of the value chain in totality and the weapon load he was carrying for that was more than enough.

His wingman Lt commander John was equipped with AMRAAMS and HARM s and it was johns job to take care of Jacks --- when he goes for weapon release at comparitively high altitude of 5000 ft to ensure a good lock on and also to provide some measure of safety from his own bomb fragments .

Kanupp became operational in 1972 two years before indias first experimental nuclear detonation in Pokhran and initially it was under international atomic energy safeguards. It is a modified version of well known CANDU powwer reactor of canadian design and utilises a fuel composition only available from the suppliers. The advantage is it uses natural uranium rather than enriched uranium for reactor operation .

Pakistani use and storage norms (read piferage ) caused canada to break off all nuclear agreements with pakistan in 1976 and all further supplies of fuel was stopped. International safeguards were put in place and reactor continued operation .Fuel and critical spares were developed in pakistan may be with some chinese assistance .Kanupp had one of the worst capacity factor of all power plants in the world and though under so called international safeguards the accontability of spent fuels and its reprocessing if any was alwys fogged in doubt .

The sam batteries went on search/track mode moment jack out of deck and to his predetermined weapon release altitude 5000 ft and energised the laser designator panel and clicked off the auto pilot on the control stick. His wingman was just waiting for such a situation as one after another high speed antiradiation missiles carshed into the primary and secondary search radars blowing them up to sky and then back to earth in about 10 seconds . Hornet no 3 and 4 came in at 3000 ft layering the immediate vicinity with 500 kg cluster bombs more to dissade any man portable sam operator than serious damage . Hornet 5 and 6 went to top cover mode at 23000 ft and switched on their air search radar for any airdefense fighter that may be vectored on them .

The 75 ft cryogenic distillation column came up nice and square as Jack slewed the cursor of laser designator on his stick right at the base of the tal tower and locked it in .As he continued onhis path the laser measured the distance the attack computer calculated the optimum weapon release point and corrected with inputs from flight computer on actual air speed and altitude over ground at the point of release and then at the precise moment the robotic brain decided everything was right and sent the release signal to the weapon pylon .The electromagnetic clutch opened a fraction of second later and the 4 bombs with spinnig tails were on their way .

The detonation was not very spectacular since there was nothing to explode exceot the bombs itself which made an impressive crater on the tower base as the whole column toppled into dust disintegrating in the process . The heavy water storage tank just opened up and and released its contents into emergency drain and lost forever.

Bomb no3 and 4 went into the raector buiding pentrated the spherical roof and exploded inside the main control room shutting down the reaction immediately and turning the multimillion dollar control facility into a mass of burnt plastic and copper with tons of shredded glass .

Up in the sky a limited dogfight di develop between 4 mirage 3 vectored in from nearby masroor airbase and hornets on top cover duty. The AMRAAM s held sway -the pakistani pilots were brave and they tried but were shot down eben before they came with missile firing range . It was in a technical sense an one sided batlle both on the ground and to some extent in air but then that is the way moder air battles are being fought at least if possible .

PHALCON 1 - OVER JODHPUR-0345 HRS
-------------------------------------------------
-Condor flight expect flanker escort in-rhino flight i 5 minutes -flight level 450 - emergency direct contact frequency ------mhz
-roger that phalcon 1 -over and out

LAHORE REGION AIR DEFENSE RADAR CENTRE
----------------------------------------------------
The radar console operator Sajid had been tracking the large bips flying on a parallel path to long defunct international border for quite some time when he saw the sudden course change and the large formation split up into 4 seperate groups of six aircraft each .At the same time a large number of smaller fast moving blips appeared all around the large aircraft formation and then all monitors turned grainy white Sajid did not hesitate as he pushed down the scramble button without hesitation and then picked up the direct line to base commander and also then to sq leader imtiaz for the final raid warning .

FOXTROT ALPHA FLIGTH 100 KMS NORTH WEST OF LAHORE -4XMIRAGE III
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-Foxtrot alpha -control - incomming raid vector -altitude 40000 -spedd 450 knots -heavy bomber formation with flanker escort -immediate intercept -you are weapons free -confirm
- roger that control - target prirority flankers - vectoring in for max speed intercept replied sq leader Hamid as he pushed his mirage into a shallow dive and moved the throttle into re heat zone
- negative foxtrot alpha flight -priority target is heavy bombers - avoid flankeres -bravo five two in four six aircraft formations -hit formation over lahore first -over and out .

Unknown to them all the four mirages were already located by the phalcon and their targeting data down linked by high speed encrypted burst transmission to individual su-30 mkis s attack/mav computer .the computer has already assigned the weapon stations and armed the missiles and now the flight computer ahve taken control and moving the four assigned sukhois unerringly towards the four doomed mirages at a closing rate of more than 2000 kms per hour .The pilots role reduced to that of a spectator for this part of aerial combat till the shoot command came up on the head up display and the powerfule Bars radar switched on and iluminated the target . As the flicked the small yeallow white plastic covers off the firing button and squeezed the button the four R-77 s dropped from the rails and ignited aftera time delay of 1.5 seconds .The piot looke otherway as the powerful interceptor missiles ignited and zoome off into four oreselected spots in space almost 65 kms away . At nearly 3 time the speed of sound it did not take long for the missiles to reach the target aquistion zone and from then on it was just a game of death with the pakistani mirages trying their best to evade the active radar seeker on missile nose cone and trying to fool it with chaffs and violent moves only one succeeded other three dotted their presence in the form of three bright orange dots in the distant horizon and three less blips on phalcons screen .
Sq leader hamid pushed his mirage to ground in the hope of loosing the r-77 radar lock almost suceeded when the powerful radars on phalcon 1 required him and passed on the new target data to rhino lead and this time the attack computer selecetd weaponstation 7 holding the R-73 archer heat seeker and the shoot command came up once again at a distance to target of 27 kms ,the missile was launched at 22 kms and again Sq leader Hamid survived as he pulled up in a classic vertical charlie trying for a head on engagement with the rhine lead as the heta seeker harmlessly splashed into ground with a smoky thump. That was a big mistake as the snap rolled out of engagement zone crossed the mirage with a horizantal seperation less than 500ft and then lit the afterburner in a classic tail chase scenario . The climbing mirage soon ran out of air speed and as hamid tried to recover from a near stall and reduced his angle of attack to almost level flight flying squarely into the gunsight of flanker . A very short less than one second burst
and the 30 mm shells at nearly 2000 rounds per inute firing rate ripped open the filmsy mirage airframe and the fuel drenched aircraft floated down in a firey ball ending in a muted explossion as the fuel tak
exploded.

CONDOUR FLIGHT- 0330 HRS INTERNATIONAL BORDER
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-condor flight -commence bombing run -target alpha
- roger that phalcon -thanks for the assist -replied Col Tim as he put the strtofortress into a shallow dive at with vertical speed indicator barely touching 200 ft per minute as he energised the edsignator and tried to visually track the large sprawling uranium ore concentration and milling plant some distance away as seen in sat images . The long conveyor belt was the first most easily identified landmark followed by the fluidised bed ore concentrator where comparitively low grade pakistani uranium ore is concentrated to minimum operating concentration and finally the uranium hexafluride plant were the ore was combined chemically to produce UF6 gas for before transportation and final purification/enrichment into reactor weapon grade uranium metal in the ultra centrifugesof kahuta research lab .

2000 lb bombs are cheap in fact cheaper than hamburger and USAF had no shortage as they rained down over the uranium milling complex flawless directed at their individual target by the refelected laser beam and moved by the short fins attached to thier backside - begining of thew end of pakistani nuclear ambition started in a spectacular way . By the time the B-52 s left for thier next waypoint/target lahore nuclear plant looked very much like a deserted ghost town of hollywood movies except it was very hot and smoky .

IAF STATION -JODHPUR - MISSION BRIEFING -0200 HRS
----------------------------------------------------------------
The nodal point pf pakistans nuclear weapons programme along with principal centre for development of long range missiles based on korean and chinese design. The core of the facility is the sprawling underground ultra gas centrifuge facility used to seperate heavier isotope of uranium in gas form from uranium heaxfluride into 95% pure highly enriched uranium . The basic technology was and design of uranium hexafluride centrifuge was reportedly stolen from URENCO enrichment facility in Netherlands including the detailed manufacturing design and drawings of the ultra centrifuge .Bhutto gave Dr Khan ful authority and control of the uranium enrichment project and within 5-7 yrs the target of enriching uranium to weapons grade metal was achieved .

It was not done without outside assistance particularly in the area of ultra centrifuge manufacture . Presence of chinese engineers was confirmed by various intel agencies as early as 1980 about the same time when first attempts towards uranium enrichments were made. Though the system started operating in 1984 problems with the gas lubricated high speed bearings and dynamic balancing of high speed rotors were responsible for start up problems which lasted about 2-3 yrs. Regular production of weapons grade highly enriched uranium started around 1987/88 . These are also the two key areas were direct chinese assistance was provided most likely .

The capacity of enriched uranium or more specificaly U-235 95%+ purity is entirely dependent on no of centrifuges operating at any specific period of time and reports say about 1000 centrifuges are added every 5 yrs or so .Translated to real terms and assuming about 18 kg of enriched uranium is required for a 20kt fission weapon pakistan started with a production capacity of 2 weapns per year and later on increased it in stages to 6-8 weapons per year by late 2005 with about 5000 ultra centrifuges operating.

Uranium as mined from earth contains essentially two isotopes U-235 and U-238 in the rough ratio of 99.3 to0.7 varying from source to source marginally. U-235 need to be enriched or cencentrated to 95% +level before it can be of any use in any fission weapon. The physical difference in atomic mass between U-235 and U-238 is the basic property on which any uranium enrichment process operates . From the mines uranium is usally available in form of uranium oxide wich is then converted to uranium hexa fluride prior to enrichment process. This is a long process where uranium oxide is reduced by hydrogen to form uranium di oxide which then made to react with hydrogen fluride to form uranium tetrafluride and then into a fludised bed reactor and made to react with flurine gas to produce uranium hexafluride .Uranium hexa fluride is highly corrosive when moist that is containg water vapour as contaminant and as such maximum care is taken to keep it dry its dew point usally below minus60 deg c .The dry uranium hexafluride gas is coled under pressure to liquid form and filled into heavy duty stainless steel cylinders where it solidifies into white crystaline solid

The enrichment process used in kahuta is a second generation seperation process by which the lighter U-235 is seperated from heavier U-238 and compared to alternate gas diffusion enrichment process more power economic though some what capital and maintainance intensive. The capacity of enrichment plants of this type is usally measured in seperative work units and is a function of amount of raw uranium processed and degree to which it is enriched. For example a gaseous diffussion unit consumes about 2500 kwh of energy per per seperative work unit while a modern gas centrifuge system will consume only 50kwh of power for the same level of production .

The uranium hexa fluride gas is fed into a series of vacuum tubes each containg a rotor about 1.5/1.7 mtr long and just over 15cm in dia . The rotors operate at very high speed of nearly 75000 revolutions per minute much higher than a conventional centrifuge (30000) rpm) the heavier U-238 isotopes drift towards outer edge by centrifugal force and consequently the lighter U-235 isotopes gets concentrated near the centre or in other words ge enriched . The concentration change by application of such large centrifugal force is further enhanced by axial injection of fresh feed gas near centre. The enriched gas from stage one goes to next centrifuge for further enrichment while the gas from outer periphery containing more of the heavier isotope goes back to previous stage. The centrifuges are arranged in cascade and approximately 20 stages are required minimum as in Kahuta.

air commodore Vinod finished his technical background brief and went on specific briefing to individual mig 27 flights on their specific mission objective and type of resistance that can be expected . It took almost 30 minutes for the brief to be completed and the pilots made thier way to ready room -outside the floggers were getting ready for a historic strike misson.

IAF STATION JODHPUR -0300 HRS-MOSCOW 27 FLIGHT 6 XMIG 27
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wing comander srinath strapped himself into the ejection seat with some discomfort as his tall frame found it a little difficult to get in but once seated and strapped it was ok of sorts .Cold desert air blew in thru the open canopy and the ground crew started plugging in the starter cart .The order to initiate engine start came within a few minutes and as pressed slightly on the ignition switch and the ground cart roared the powerful engine started with a rumble and groan and the standard spurt of unburnt jet fuel . As he closed the canopy and powered up the avionics circuit breakers the screens and guages came alive . All along the line 5 other Mig 27s did the same and first strike mission to Kahuta got ready to fly.

- tower -moscow 27-request clearence to taxi
- moscow 27 -cleared to taxi -watch out for jags at taxi intersection

Srinath just released the brake pressure and the engines did the rest. As he steered the aerdynamic striker on the runway the ground speed had a tendency to jump over 40 km/hr the max permitted with ful weapon load and he had to step on the brakes hard on few occassions . On the first taxi way intersection he could see the 6 jaguars lined up and waiting for runway clearence as he passed by and reached the main runway 14

- tower moscow 27 -request permission to take off
- moscow 27 -tower -you rae cleared for take off - climb to 5000 ft and contact phalcon 1 on -- mhz
- cleared for take off- rolling

Srinath stepped on the brakes and for one last time checked on the guages ,wings set at 16 deg for take off, exhaust temperature normal, all weapon stations ok , fuel load max allowed and head wind 20 km/hr not unusal for a desert air base as his practised hand smoothly moved the power lever from idle to max military power setting .The flogger dipped acknowledgement and then released of the brake pressure started accelerating down the runway fast even with the full weapon load and against a strong head wind -as the air speed built up the controls started comming alive in his hand and he had to really concentrate to keep the bird along the centre line -pulled back at 185 knots and pulled up the undercarriage lever the moment the altimter started scrolling down confirming a positive rate of climb. The vibration died down but the noise remained somewhat .Srinath loved his aircraft and the engineers who made it but why the hell didnot use better accoustic insulation thought he as the throbbing noise of single turbfan in full reheat penetrated even thru his earplugs -altitude 500-1000-1500-1550-1600 mtrs
as he leveled out at 5000ft the voice of phalcon commander came on the tac net
- moscow flight -phalcon 1 -i have control
-roger that phalcon 1 - 1650 mtrs - 950 km/hr -140
- moscow flight -turn right heading 210-make new altitude -50 mtrs repeat 50 mtrs -keep this grequency open for threat and target update
- making altitude 50 mtr - frequency reserved for com

His left hand moved the wing sweep lever and smoothly the hydraulic motors swept back her wings to 45 deg as she came to her new heading

Srinaths target was the long range radar warning station Chaklala -the heart of pakistani air defense command ,which had to be neutralised at leat for a few hours if the mission to kahuta is to succeed.

-Moscow 27 -phalcon1-reduce altitude to 25 mtrs
- reducing altitude to 25 mtrs - over and out - from now on Wing commander srinath will not be communicating and all his attention focussed on keeping the jet from smashing into uneven terrain of pakistan with a full load of fuel and weapons ,his radar on standby mode andall course and target data rom phalcon the flogger became a high speed ghost from hell as she entered pakistani air space . The five others followed in a single line with a horizantal seperation of 500 ft and vertical seperation less than 25 ft . They were practically invisible from all pakistani long range radars and till they come within the range of some of the fly catchers their only treat would be from air from the mirages and falcons and to some extent even form f-7 s but that was some one elses problem thought Srinath as he pushed the sleek machine along the ground .

Up above the 12 mig 29s from pathan kot took up a text book top cover mision getting live data feed from phalcon controller and ready to intercept anything that may threaten the floggers flying so periliously close to ground and perhaps the riskiest mission of the war so far .

Teaming up with US is remote possibility, best to our imagination. If we r incapable to stop their ballistic missiles from frying us. Then we shouldn't think of attacking their nuclear facilities. They sure must hv hidden some nuclear missiles and after the destruction of their nuclear facilities. They are going for nuclear strike, and only and I repeate only if we hv system to stop their missiles, that we will survive. Otherwise we shud wait till we hv such system, then think of their nuclear facility destruction. Don't rely on US for support.

And you think the GOI and Indian Military does not know that?? The only real threat would be their mobile Missiles. Yes hard to locate but not Impossible. We already have S-300 system for ABM system (if I am not mistaken). Even if they still manage to laungh a nuclear strike then pakistan will be a big nuclear wasteland. I do not think they will risk it. Also we do have remote sensing capabilities and preparing for nuclear strike is not that easy to conceal.

Meawhile great writing Shanker.

nav - you assume that pak is a rational entity, they have already demonstrated that they are far from it. the old cold war rules do not apply very well in this context

PAKISTAN AIR DEFENSE COMMAND -CHAKLALA-0300 HRS
------------------------------------------------------------------
Group captain Ayub looked down from his elevated platform at the mass of radar monitors scanning the sky for any hostile air intrussion . The mig 29s from pathankot was spotted without much difficulty and he picked up his intercom to 4 falcons on operation ready platform . As the falcons thundered into sky to intercept the intruders 4 more of the few remaining falcons strted their preflight and were expected to join the earlier four in 5 minutes time .

The indian tactics of of drawing out the ready interceptors by going overtly visual on long range radar was working really well .meanwhile Ayub was not at all aware at the 6 floggers streaking inlow and very fast towards his mobile command centre unerringly directed by the all watching eyes of phalcon 1

The pakistans integrated air defense comand was formed in 75 and has the primary responsibility of monitoring ,control and co ordination of all aerial activities withing its air space. All the elements of air defense from manned interceptors to surface to air missile units and the numerous anti aircraft guns which dot the coutry side around kahuata nuclear centre included. While the main command centre is underground right under the hard shelters of falcons at a depth of nearly 7 mtrs a few more satelite command centres also operate taking its cue from the same battery of long range search radars and a couple of low altitude radars having some what smaller range of detection .

The long range radar system which was at the very moment giving its feed to the command centre consisted essentially of

-FPS 89/100 located 10 km south and 15 km east of chaklala
- Type 514 chinese system located 5 kms east of kahuta
- Condor a high end british system located 7 km south Rawalpindi
- TPS 43G US radar system with a range of approx 350 kms 12 kms east of kahuta
- Thomson CSF air trafic control radar located at islamabad international airport and acts mainly as an early wrning radar .

Grid coordinates of all thes installations werealready entered in the floggers attack computer and a single 2000 kg laser guided bombs were earmarked for each of them . Even if all were not destryed considerable gap will definitely be created for the subsequent flogger strike to exploit and widen . That was the broad game plan for the first strike mission .

The second wave of floggeres were scheduled to take off the low level radars consisting of

AR-1 155 range 150 km
MPDR 45/60/90 km range arayed in rough pentagon formation 5 kms radius around rawalpindi /kahuta .

The kahuta nuclear complex is also densely covered by a dense network of surface to air missiles mainly Croatle 2000/and 3000 with a few launchers of croatle 4000. These are perhaps the most deadly threat to any strike force and have a very low reaction time .It was earmarked for the flogger flight 4 and 5

The last flogger flight was earmarked for runway attack for the three main air bases that protect kahuta namely -chkalala ,sargodha and masrror (karachi )

All to be done in the space of 30 minutes and then the infantry already on air can get down and do the needful .It was an ambitious plan but then that what indian airforce always was.

GRIZZLY FLIGHT -MIG 29 X 12
--------------------------------------
-Grizzly flight -phalocn 1- we see 4 bandits inbound -range 160 kms -altitude -25000 ft -type falcon - you rae clered to intercept and engage -weapons free repeat weapons free in target area .
-roger that phalocon 1 - wing commander suri acknowledged briefly as he quickly selected 3 of his flight closest to him for the intercept mission

-grizzly 3.5 6 climb to 15000 mtrs -close up on me ,spoke suri onthe interpalne frequency ah he put the fulcrum on a sharp climb and closed in for the kill

The falcon flight fell for the bait and started climbing in the process loosing valuable air speed and increasing the time to intercept giving the flankers all the time position and launch the first attack. 4 R 77 dropped from inside wing pylons and raced on towrds the target in a lazy arc
-missile inbound -beak break -comanded squadron leader Hasan put his F-16 in a banking dive away from the tragetory of incomming missles ,the automated chaff flare dispensers releasedfew packets of aluminised mylar in the slipstream .

Two of the 4 falcons were not so lucky as the r-77s tracked on them mercilessly and converted the two shiny jets into smoky fireballs high up in the sky without remorse .

The fulcrums were now at a disadvantage as the falcons tuned into their tails and released 2 aim 9x each at the four fulcrums .The focal plane array controlled imaging infrared seeker missiles took off the port wing of the suris wing man boring straightthru the cloud of flares and he cartwheeled all the way to ground trailing unburnt fuel and hydraulic fluid . In the distance another fire ball signified death of another mig 29 who tried toget away fromthe deadly 9x by going vertical on after burners .

Suri dived rolled out of dive at 500 ft and looped up at the first falcon launched a straight shot of r-73 up its tail pipe continued his loop and launched at the second falcon at his 4 oclock in a classic off bore sight shot thru his helmet mounted sight. Afew seconds later the sky was clear -at least for the time being

In the days to come indian airforce will go over this particular engagement very closely to identify the lapses and to ensure this is not repeated again . But all said and done their enquiry will not yield any conclussive reason behind thes losses since most of the evidence will never be recorded including gun camera video tapes of the lost Mig 29s . In short following conclussions will be arrived at

- At a high closure rate of more than 2500 kms /hr the migs after launching the R-77s should have broken off the engagement and come in for a second attack inthe beyound visual range domain to retain their advantage of longer range missiles. By closing in with the F-16s at high speed where the falcon has some distinct advantage in terms of turn rateat high speed and more effective decoy resistant heat seekers the two migs played into PAF hand
- The intel report that PAF has almost negligible stock of advanced AIM 9X was dead wrong obviuosly they have been saving up their inventory for a situation like this ,the pilots carried out manuveres may be suitable for AIM9L but definitely fataly wrong for its more advanced cousin

- The MIg 29 pilot may be tried to use his advantage of higher climb rate to draw out the falcon pilot into an energy sapping vertical chase which bait the PAF pilot did not take -he simply used his better aquisition radar and missile to hit the fulcrum which have strayed within his sure kill envelope .

To summarise just like all odern air combats this was also played out on the thin boundary of that lies between within and beyond visual range .The first strike by migs were text book perfect so was the evasive moves by the falcons which helped preserve some of their strength .The counterstrike bt falcons was again the way it should have been since the migs in their adsk to finish of the combat in the same forward closure rate flew into a situation loaded in favour of falcons . The outcome could not have been anything else

It would also be analysed why the senior controller on board Phalcon 1 did not intervene to break of the engaement after after launch of first salvo by migs and re position them for a second strike from bvr range since all them were still carring one more r-77 and other 3 flights were near by . No satisfactory answer will come out of this querry except the controller thought that withdrawing the mig 29s from engagement at that stage of battle would have exposed the vulnerable MIG 27 strike packages to F-16 s which would have been very very expensive

But all these would be a game of future -now the battle was far from over -the mistakes made and lessons learnt by all concered in
a matter of few very long seconds .

-Grizzly flight -4 falcons inbound -15000ft -110 kms -you are cleared to engage
-roger that phalcon 1 -engaging now -request weapons free
- grizzly one -you are weapons free

This time the mig-29s did not make the mistake of last engagemet Sq leader Rishikesh slwed his agile aircraft into a nose up radar missile firing position and hit the after burner launched his first R-77 at 50 km dived out of engaement and came in for a second launch at 75 kms aprt from the leading falcon his wing man did the same they launched their second set of R-77 s at trailing falcons all outside sidewinder launch range . THE 4 F-16 s were shot down without ever getting a chance to laucnh their weapons .It was not a fair fight but then who said you have to be fair in war.

- moscow flight -phalcon 1 - you are cleared for bombing run -now
- roger that phalcon 1 -comencing run now

Wing commander srinath once again tightened his straps and then aimed at the target somewhere ove rthe horizon as he pushed the wing sweep lever to its max sweep position and the wings moved back to max sweep angle of 72 degree for mas speed strike run and exit from target zone .Srinaths left hand nudged the the throttlr lever all the way forward and rest of the mig 27 formation took up thier staggered strike position at pre selected targets as srinaths aircraft zoomed up to 5000 ft and strreaked like an arrow to its target -the air defense command centre of pakistan .

- the radar screens inthe undergorond command centree lit up as the all the six mig 27s were spotted almost at the same time about 10 seconds out and launch command to croatle batteries issued - 4 seconds lost-the croatles swung on thier motorised mountls and target aquistion- 4 more seconds -missile launch -2 seconds as the mig 27s flashed overhead dropping thier deadly cargo of 2000 kg bombs on the command centre ,on the six launchers arranged ina semi circular pattern in groups of two ,the battery of anti aircraft guns interspaced between the sam launchers and exited before even the bombs have started exploding on the groud below . Two mig 27s would not make it back both shot during egress fro target area one by a croatle sam and the other by zsu 23 2 rapid fire anti aircraft gun as they flew directly over it.

- moscow flight 27a exit target area immediately-new course 165 make altitude 5000
-moscow flight 27b commence attack -now
-roger that falcon 1 - commencing run now

The second flight of mig 27s came in low and fast .With pakistani defenders still dazed by the first strike and radars down they had no warning as the floggers dropped thir load of parachute retarded500 kgcluster bombs on whatever reamined in the airfield complex but savingthemain 10000 ft runway (it will be required later) and that included the secondary mobile radars which have just started unfurling thier dishes out of camaflage nets and their crews getting the generators started up to make up for the loss of survilanc capability in the first strike.

The third flight of the floggers took the hard shelters with 1000 kgs laser guided bombs they methodically hit the aircraft shelters lining the main runway one at time . Secondary explossion was seen in most of them confiring presence of armed and fuelled aircraft inside . The last two aircraft of this package finally unloaded their napalm canisters and nearly 6 tons of thick petroleum jelly covered the likely hide out for stinger teams and then ignited in aloud whoosh incinerating any unlucky soul still inside the coverings .

A hole has been ounched in the pakistani air defense network. A window of opperunity for a few hours have been created by the brave pilots of indian airforce some whom have given thier lives to achieve the objective . And finally the real mission was a go

The second flight of six mig 27s came

F-16A firing aim-9x surelly means they must have been upgraded. Also 4 to 2 loss is not that bad as PAF f-16's numbers are far below that of the mig-29's.

Great story by the way :-o .
:?: Was just wondering why do we allow the us to help .Just replace the b-42's with a few Prthvis or urans and that should do the job.

0330 HRS - IAF STATION JODHPUR - SPEECATX6
-----------------------------------------------------------
Sq leader Abhijeet walked on to the aluminium ladder and into the cramped cockpit of his much flow speecat jaguar. Apart from the short range heat seking matra magic on typical overwing pylons the only weapon it carried in the centre line pylon was single GBU 28 specifically designed for pentrating the hardened bunkers in this case they were to be used as "can openers" to create an opening in the fissile material storage area of kahuta underground complex so that the joint special forces team can get the stuff out quickly and with minimum resistance from inside .Since the warheads and fissile material drums rae reinforced and kept in a seperate stainless steel vault the chances of acciedental detonation was very remote even insignificant as per nuclear experts in the loop.

As he strapped him self in the familiar cockpit gave him confidence to carry out this very very difficult and risky mission ,getting into well defended airspace at less than 50 ft and at nearly supersonic speed ,delivering the ordanance with pinpoint accurace at target well concealed and finally trying to get out alive if possible. He knew fulcrums are already in postion and Mirages from gwalior will come in back up if the situation turns really hairy but still it was total dependence on other pilots in their so called air defense aircraft or air dominance aircraft as the sukhoi boys like to consider theirs and this feeling of dependence gave his a sinking feeling in the gut .

The starter cart plugged in ,liquid oxygen guage showed full as he powered up the avionics and the guages came alive . On his rotaing hand signal the starter cart whine increase and his compressor strarted rotating at about 5% normal speed ,his left hand checked the small delicate anodised black throttle lever idle as his right hand checked the flap and tail movement one last time and then a small squeeze on the ignition button and the rolls royce engines came to life with a throaty cough and then settled onto a steady roar as his right hand sqeezed on the ignition switch for the second engine ,the air shimmered behind and the dark night behind was covered in an orange glow ,steped on the brake -checked safety pin off the martin baker ejection seat ,one quick look at the neat row weapon station selectors on his right all safely covered by individual yeallow black hard plastic protectors -engine rpm 10% ,he stepped on the brake and his left hand slid the power lever forward by a few cms into active thrust zone and the twin engines roared in unison confirming their readiness to fly and to fight ,slid back the throttle once again to idle zone and time to take clearence

-tower -speecat flight alpha three-request permission to taxi
-speecat flight alpha three -you are cleared to taxi and hold short of runway 14
- roger that tower -commencing taxi i formation

As he released the brakes and inched the power lever forward he also diped his navigation lights twice and his formation followed at 10 seconds envelope .Unlike mig 27s it is not so difficult to taxi a jaguar some say it is due to its comparitively low thrust to wt
ration ,some say it is because of its wing shape and loading some say its higher average airframe to ground distance which make it somewhat more stable at low speed on ground and ofcourse in flight

As he taxied Abhijeets left hand checked everything like the brake chute activation lever on up left ,flap setting checked at 25 degree by the side of his left leg , once more the ejection seat handle between his legs ,he checked the stick movement forward and backwards and then side wards for a free feel and confirm nothing is stuck up since at 50 ft it would mean all the difference between lift and death .

The hammerhead came up and the so the voice of tower controller
- alpha three ,hold short of runway 14 -il 76 on finals - zero three nos.
-holding short of runway 14 -alpha three flight

Far in the distance the large aircrafts switched on their powerful landing lights as came in for a perfect graceful landing ,the whine of their engines in full reverse thrust could be heard even when they reached the end of the long runway where they took the turnaround and slowly like elephants exited the runway

- alpha flight cleared for immediate take off-climb to 2000 and contact phalcon one on --mhz -good hunting
- alpha three rolling -30 seconds interval -roger and out

Abhijeet glanced around for the last of many pre flight checks -flapsset 25 degree, hydraulics pressure ok and in green, battery power indicator green, all weapon stations covered ,weapon release switch on stick in safe mode ,laser designator standby mode ,runway clear as he switched on the the lights and his left hand smoothly pushed the combined throttle lever forward all the way forward to 100 % military power and as the heavy loaded aircraft started moving quickly picking up speed - a click on the throttle stick and all the way up in the reheat zone . As raw jet fuel sprayed on the hot exhaust gases from combustion chamber the shrill whine from the turbines changed in to a throaty roar and the mighty jaguar leaped forward pushing the pilot into his ejection seat and flashed forward to meet the sky and then suddenly the ground vibration died out and it was time to retract the undercarriage and contact controller on phalcon 1 .

-Phalcon 1 -alpha three flight at flight level 50 -request vector to target an course waypoints
-alpha three -phalcon one -turn right 230 -make your altitude 2000 ft -keep this frequency open for course and threat updates

The six jaguars settled down to their new vector 450 knots and 2000ft not bad thought squadron leader abhijeet as he pushed the control stick forward and sideways very gently and the low strike fighter took her cue and slid into new altitude and heading without so much as a jerk.

yes its known as the EXecutive Bilateral Organisational Xfer system and is available to all key decision makers at their fingertips, and for some in a portable variant, usually carried in the briefcase of their ADC. The system is sometimes known by its acronym. I am reliably informed that a new version has recently been tested and found to be highly effective. During development a glitch was disovered wherein one mode of operation inadvertently passed the launch codes to the Agni crew on permanent standby for quick reaction launch. Apparently one bird was in countdown mode when the glitch was spotted and the whole thing called off.

DERA GHAZI KHAN -URANIUM HEXAFLORIDE COVERTOR-PAKISTAN
CONDOR FLIGHT - B-52 + RHINE FLIGHT SU-30 MKI-0440 HRS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Condor flight -phalcon 1-time to target zero seven minutes -make course
290 - altitude 35000 ft - weapon select 1000 kg cluster 50% 500kg gravity balance - attack profile tango -confirm message recieved ok
- phalcon 1 -condor flight -acknowledge target data reciept and confirm attack profile tango repeat tango -time to target 6.5 minutes -strike altitude 35000 ft -comencing bombing run in 5 minutes max speed

The 2 F-16 and 4 mirage 5 were waiting for just such a situation -totally radio silent they listened to this increased emmision in uhf frequency band and knew a raid is in the offing .Group captain Imtiaz moved the power lever all the way forward and started a max rate climb and at the same time switched on his air search radar to aquire the B-52 s .The radar echo at 35000 ft was to prominent many time bigger than c-130s he was used to and he quickly energised the outer most pylon aim 9ls for a snap shot -but he was still far out of range about 80 kms from the closets buff and heclosed in at an intercept angle of 45 degree in a classic side flank attack in an almost vertical climb at a climb rate indiactor touching almost 30000 ft/min .His taem mates followed at discreet distance each selecting thier own um missable target . Time to launch missile 4 minutes for a sure kill .

They did not see the su-30 s at leat not on radar since they have shanged their altitude and gone to deck at 500 ft with no after burner and their powerful Bars 9kw air search and tarck radars all in standby mode relying totally on the phalcon for their intercept and targetiing solution .

The message from phalcon 1 flashed on the extreme left of three 6 inch multicolour LCD screen

- rhino flight -bandits 22550 ft -mirage 4 falcon 2 - on full after burner - distance 50 kms -10 o clock -engage and destroy immediately

The graceful flankers ( often called sexy by su-30 fans world wide) spread out like a fish net and switched on their ultra pwerful seazrch radars as they raced forward for a typical tail chase shot with R-73s .After all why waste a half a million dollar R-77 when same can be done more economically witha 130000 dollar heat seeker .

Group captai imtiaz knew he was dead when out of a corner of his eye he saw the grey silver twin tailed darts flash past over ground at 500 ft and then strarted their final climbing turn to launch their blunt glazed nose infra seeking misiles with cruciform fins . He had lost all his options in about 15 seconds .He was stil out of range with the B-52 S and to engage a sukhoi 30 mki armed with R-73 in an within visual range high speed turning combat is perhaps the surest way of commiting suicide and buying a confirmed ticket to paradise . Still he tried .Immediately he switched off the after burners and dived for the ground tring to break the radar lock of the heat seeker at the point of launch .

weapon system officer squadron leader Doshi gentle rolled his finger over the target designator over the radar shadow of the falcon and clicked . The attack computer acknowledeged the command and dispalyed weapon options in this case with a recommendation ,doshi clicked once again ok and the the death warrant of the despearte falcon was signed sealed and delivered in 3 seconds . First the flight computer increased the power level of the twin engine assymetrically to execute a sharper turn so that the selected weapon have a highest intercept possibilty ,this un stabilised the heavy intercepto a wee bit ,the canards before wing moved few degree in wards satbilising the newly generated turning moment by creating an equal and opposit moment by moving the away from the wing surface once again assymetrically , the radar measured the range to target , and fed the data to attack computer which then decidedto wai for a few seconds before issuing the launch comand to the weapon station controler ,the dedicated igntion coil circuit closed sending a short duration high current pulse thru the slim ni chrome ignitio coil embeded in the soild booster motor of the R-73 . The solid propellent ignited in a flash and the rail lock holding the missile in position opened allowing the striker to fly free of all bodage guided only its own robotic brain and occasional guidance from the sukhois radar its sensitive leadar arsenide seeker head detected a reflection from its laser proximity source on its collector head . Anothe small charge of electricity generated in the small battery pack and in abot a thousandth second reached the explossive warhead throwing up a shower of tungsten and steel darts in the proximity of its hot tail pipe . The high velocity meatl fragments cut thru the thin Titanium skin of the exhaust nozzle and opened up the after burner fuel supply line . The raw jet fuel came in contact with still red hot exhaust and flashed into an orange fire ball in lees than second -the falcon cartwheeled and then exploded in a shower of hot aluminium over the perched landscape of baluchistan .

Seeing death in eyes the other falcon and mirages tried to escape with full reheat but it was too late and their high speed clim has robbed them of valuable air speed as they drifted into the kill envelope of sukhois waiting like a pack of nile crocodiles for the helpless wilderbeast trying to cross the mara river . One by one one they were destryed in a very clinical manner -the super agile flankers easily keeping pace with the mirages despeate moves and closing in within 5 kms for a sure kill shot . At last the PAF knew why sukhois are the worlds best and more technically why they have a vectoring control on their engine thrust .It was no combat -it was a mass execution in cold blood carried with robotic precision .

- Condor flight-phalcon 1 commence bombing run -now
and the giant bombers came in to lighten up their load once more as the stick of destructio rained down one by one the the uranium illing plant, the hydrofloric acid storage ,the remore operation station ,the uranium hexa floride storage sile ,the process reactors and finally the residential complexes flattened out in a whirlpool of dust and smoke . One more "pride" piece of pakisatni (chinese) technological masterpiece was taken out with some "colateral damage" . Unconfirmed reports would later say about 75%of all senior scientists and engineers died in sleep in the early hours just before daybreak .

-Phalcon 1 -condor flight - target neutarlised -limited colateral damage suspected -request next target co ordinates .

And the process continued

USS NIMITZ -100 KMS SOUTH WEST OF KARACHI -O445 HRS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Major Lynda sitting 3 decks below the noisy flight deck looke at the bank of 4 flat screen monitors each dispalying the images relayed thru the infra/low light cameras of her predator squadron circling over kahuta .After the first strike when the primary radars were cleanly taken off by the mig 27s of indian air force the secondary mobile radars were comming on line one by one as frantic ground crew pushed them out of the covers and started up the back up generators .

Unfortunately all this activity on a cold dawn produced lot of heat and heat is what the infra cameras were designed to recieve ,analyse and transmit to their master sitting sevearl hundred kilomteres inside the bowels of a super carrier .

the MQ-2 predators that majot lynda was controlling today with her tine joystick was the latest version of more well known MQ 1 version .The basic difference was the presence of 2 and not one hell fire missiles slung underneath . The cameras mounted under nose in a gimbaled joint rotated 360 degree to scan the rapidly brightening up pakistani land scape . All of them were fling a standard race track pattern at slightly different altitude and was moved in closer to strike zone only after the primary radars were taken off . As they releayed the real time data back to the controller aboard USS Nimitz the tiny microprocessors also got the filmsy aircraft flying at a majestic speed of 260 km/hr to do the tricky job of launching the standard anti tank missiles at the protected command stations of PAFs secondary radar network . Back in Nimitz lynda alog with her team of two sensor operators studied the sat relayed data and assigned target priority for the 8 hellfires under their command as they moved the toy like aircrafts into missile attack positions and pressed the enter key to authorise a salvo launch .

Under normal combat situation the predator system essentially consist of 4 unmanned aircraft ,the primary satelite data link ,a ground control station and approximatel 55 support personnel including the virtual pilot and sensor operators. The pilot flies the aircraft via ku band satelite data link for beyond line of sight flight profile. Each of the unmanned aircraft is equipped with a high defination low light capable colour nose camera ,a variable aperture tv camera,a variable aperture infra red camera and also a synthetic aperture radar for a clear visibility thru fog and battle field smoke .All the cameras produce real time videp images except the synthetic aperture radar which generates high resolution digital still images . The multi spectrum targeting system comes integrated with AGM 114 hellfire missiles and integrates the sensor pakage based on electrooptical-infrared and laser illuminator in form of a sensor pakage .The predators power plant Rotax 914 is a modified snowmobile engine producing about 100 horse power from its four cylinders. Quite a few operational deployments have taken place and quite a few kills done but the most dissapointing event was perhaps when a single predator spotted osma bin laden in afganistan but it was not an armed version being one of the earlier versions in the days preceding operation enduring freedom .At a price tag of 40 million us it ios definitely a costly killing toy.

The salvo of 8 hellfires launched from the still undetected unmanned aircraft traced a lazy arc in the still dark sky as they raced towrsd the target guided by the laser designators onboard thier launching aircraft . The first two targetted the two command stations which simply disintegrated in aflash the other six came in at one second interval and crashed into the cratle launched and their reload vehicles which exploded in a series of brilliant secondary explossions and then the air defense of kahuta was stripped naked for the evantual penetration strike by the IAF jaguars already on their way .

0447 hrs -SPEECAT FLIGHT 6XJAGUAR -APPROACHING KAHUTA COMPLEX
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-speecat flight -phalcon1 - signal down- comence attck run now
- roger that phalcon 1 - understand signal down- attack profile leo-commencing now

Abhijeet was not scared or anxious at 50 ft over the rugged rock strewn landscape that surrounds kahuta nuclear weapons and missile complex there was simply no time to be scared ,in fact ther was no time for anything elese but to keep the jaguar from crashing into ground at nearly 600 knots of indicated air speed and ground speed of almost 580 knots with a strong head wind buffeting the craft every few seconds. In the distance he could see the 230 kv grid towers and the guess the position of the pre streched one inch thick alminium conductrs in 3 rows that supply power to the city of rawalpindi andthe weapon complex itself .

His right hand moved over the navigation light switch as he toggeld it twice and then switched it off altogether his wing man accepted his command by switching on his lihts once and then he too swit ched it off and spaced out and for the supersonic bomb run. Abhijeets right hand moved on to the laser designator panel as he softly pressed the tiny black knob putting in the designator to active mode .Just under his feet on the nose of the deep strike aircraft the laser pointer power circuit humed alive ready to designate and lock onto the target abhijeet would select on the hud . Abhijeets left hand di the final movement as it closed over the throttle lever index finger pushing the throttle power zone selector switch open as it was pushed into the reheat zone to the stops and then released to keep it in that position . The two engines thundered together at full power and the speecat dashed to its target - the wind buffeting increased further as the jaguar passed under the high tension power lines and the cross hairs moved under pilots fingers over the main fissile material underground storage silo dead on centre ,abhijeet moved his right thumb onthe slew switch on the stick for a final course correction as the pickle indicator came alive and he automatically lifted the nose up as the aircraft swished upto 2000 ft and his thumb flicked open the tiny red plastic protectio tab over the fire button and sqeezed it .The aircraft jumped up by about 500 ft as the heavy bomb dropped clear and its tiny brake chute opened to to nose it vertically down wards and give some time for the jag to escape out of harms way then the rocket motor ignited and the fins changed orientaion driving the massive 2000 kgs shock stabilised weapon onto the thick concrete roof of the fissile material and weapons storage silo -penetrating the concrete -steel roof it exploded inside ripping up the roof open like a can of sardine and killing everyone inside or almost everyone in a mili second .A tower of flame leapt out of the newly created hole as the jaguar that have just now created havoc turned away almost casualy to its return course some distance away hotly chased by hail of in effective ground fire .

The rest of the jaguars came in at higher altitude but al less than 5000 ft and strted their act first to go was the missile assembly building nearby .A series of secondaries with accompaning palls of thick black smoke confirmed at least some of them have found their mark . The last three flew in a circle around the complex and dumped their load on the nuclear weapon assembly buildings , on the missile -weapon mating unit and ofcourse the irreplacable ultra precision machine shop used to make the perfect hemisperical core of fission weapons . One of the jaguars made a fatal blunder -as he was comming out of the bomb run he did not
see the lone pakistani soldier standing up with an anaz directly on his flight path and fired the missile as he flew over .At that range escape was out of question .As the sleek missile hit his starboard engine the aircraft went out of control and rolled into a terminal dive -the pilot ejected and was taken a prisnor .He would be returned many months later but for the time being he was just "missing in action"

MULE FLIGHT 6 X 1L 76 INTERNATIONAL BORDER+ 8 SU-30K
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
-mule flight - phalcon 1-commence ingress now
-roger phalcon 1 - initiating ingress profile charlie -now-over-keeping frequency open for threat updates

Group captain anand bakshi pushed the collective throtle to 90% military power and the four banked north west for the 30 minutes low altitude air drop run . The aircraft responded smoothly but he still missed flying the mirage 2000 but then after a tragic ejection was grounded and then later reassigned to il 76 squadron . It took time to get oriented to this flying truck and the final qualification came about a year back . he always envied the su-30k pilots flying somwhere up and above and it was not a good feeling . But then life is like that -atleasthe is stil flying and flying in combat . Behind him strapped to the heavy duty ejection rails were the 3 bmp 2 tracked armoured personnel carriers and 120 mm mortars in their individual para drop pallets supported on strong yet light wooden base and a frame of aluminium side guards alomost exceeding his "authorised "payload from the manufacturers but then he though rules they say are meant to be broken and surely this was the time to test the maxim .Their drop point was flat patue 5 kms from the target area at 1200 ft altitude from sea level and curretnt ground threat level was still red and air threat level yeallow which meant he has to be extra careful

Next to c-130 hercules ,il-76 nato code candid is perhaps the most used medium transport aircraft in the world today and used in a variety of roles from aerial refuelling to early warning and the reason being its ultra strong airframe .reliable powerplants and high altitude /tropical area performance characteristics . A favourite of indian airforce for decades have been used in almost all conflict situations since its aquisition from maldives to sri lanka to kargil and have aquited herself well always .Russians used it extensively in afganistan and more than 50 have been recently ordered by PLAAF . One reason for such good record maybe its powerfulself preservation suite consisting of radar warning system.automated chaff and flare dispensers with a large storage space for the same and to a limited extent by the the tail mounted radar controlled gun. The integrated flight ontrol ssytem includes ground survilance radar ,digital flight and navigation computer short range radio navigation and landing system ,IFF transponder ,optical +infra red aiming mechanism and ground proximity warning system alomg with some more protection system in the classified arena most likely active radio frequency jammers and maybe towed radar decoys .

The four D-30kp turbofans are mounted on underwing pylons and housed in individual pods to which fuel is supplied from one of the twelve integral fuel tanks .All fuel tanks are divided into 4 groups according to no of engine they are feeding . Normally cross flow of fuel from one group of tanks to other is not done. Automated inert gas purging is done as a matter of routine for explossion prevention from fuel fumes in an empty tank

- mule flight -phalcon 1 -5 minutes from drop zone -reduce speed to 200 knots -make altitude 500 ft - make drop interval 3 minutes -confirm
-mule escort you are authorised to go radar active and are weapons free on allaerial target within 100 kms acknowledge

The IL 76 s came in low over the uneven flat ground with air brakes deployed as their rear clam shell doors opened up and automated ejctors released the electromachanical locks holding back the heavy pellets to the ejection rails . as the candids took up a nose high attitude to allow gravity to assist the ejection process one by one the pellets moved out and then the indiavidual heavy duty chutes opened slowing down the crash to geound and also reducing the horizantal velocity to almost 30 kms /he at the point of impact . The moment the ejction process was completed in one it climbed up to 1000 ft and banked away towards home and the next one came around . Unloading took almost 15 minutes but atlast the heavy equipment for the paras were on ground in rather chaotic condition .Those that will use them were stil some way back making the uncomfortable ride inside the flight of AN-32s expected to reach drop zone in another 10 minutes

- mule escort - bandits 6 oclock - 5000 ft - 75 kms -engage and destroy immediately -troop transporters on ingress position
- roger that phalcon 1 - engaging now

Flt lt arun did not bother about nicities of flight now as spoke some unprintables over the interplane frequency to his wing man as he shoved the power all the way to full reheat and in same motion armed up the four r-77s -his radar locked on the 6 f-6 almost immediately and he fired without thinking ,then quickly selected the weapon station 4-8 and armed them up his right thumb itching to launch those also but years of training and discipline held it back as he saw his wing man launch his active radar missiles and then spread out for a back up heat seeker launch . 8 r-77 targeted the the six f-6 at a closng speed of more than 4000 kms per hour with an estimated contact time of 15 seconds -the f-6 knew when the missles were about 35 kms out and 4 seconds away they jinxed and pivoted and dived all to no avail 4 of them got blasted out even before the pakistni pilots could get their act together the other two managed to evade and climbed up at max reheat for a close in encounter with the su-30 k s as they launched their own missiles at extreme range .

Arun broke off with sharp snap roll to ground while his wing man deployed some chaffs and flares and then looped backwards ,as the f- 6s closed in on the escaping su-30 arun came up from down and below with the lagging F-6 squrely in his gunsight -his left hand moved down to arm up the gasha and right thumb squeezed a single second burst obliterating the old chinese interceptor as arun pushed the stick left and clicked on the starboard wing tip weapon station holding the R-73 and squezed the fire button and close his eyes as the agile missile leaped off the rails and raced towards the still diving f6 .For the f-6 the end came in three more seconds but lucky pilot ejected and was sailing down dumb founded as aruns sukhoi flashed past .
