India's former Kabaddi captain was there coach. It was in news when last time there was a final match between India and Iran, how he transformed the Iranian team. I forget his name Khazan Singh or something like that.

Oh oh! Zhang Wenxiu, the Chinese hammer throw 'legend' herself ? What a 'surprise'. She won gold in 2006, 2010 and 2014 Asian Games and bronze in 2008 Olympics. She was probably doped to the gills in all those events too. If it's her, it's a pointer to rampant Chinese doping. So far all the dopers have been no name athletes, not a 3x Asian champ and Olympic+world medalist.

Impressive haul from our throwers. I wish someone would post all our throwing medal performers on youtube - it's great to see an un-SDRE SDRE fling a shot/discus/hammer/javelin and yell as they will it to the distance. There are only some Gowda discus videos online, none from AG 2014 yet.

Apparently there's this young kid named Rohit Kumar who holds the junior Asian record in Javelin. Hope he becomes an Indian Jan Zelezny. Javelin and Hammer Throw are the two coolest throwing events to watch, to me.

Damn if only 4-5 of our silvers can move like that to gold. How come we let the SL win the Gold in Mens cricket in a final against Afganistan and women T20 won by the Pakis. Why BCCI cant send some heros to win a gold there??

Or atleast remove both the gold and silver from the Chinese and we will atleast at 6th place, more silver medals won by us compared to Thailand

So it's confirmed on Xinhua itself, it was indeed the 'legendary' Zhang Wenxiu who tested positive:
China's hammer throw athlete Zhang Wenxiu stripped of Asiad gold medal for doping
China's Zhang Wenxiu has been stripped of her Asian Games gold medal in women's hammer throw after failing a pre-competition drug test, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced on Friday.

A sample taken from Zhang on Sept. 26, two days before she won the hammer throw title with 77.33 meters, was found to contain the banned substances Zeranol and its metabolite, the OCA said in a statement. Zeranol is approved for use as a growth promoter in livestock.

"The competitor has been disqualified from the competition as well as these Games and as such her accreditation canceled, and gold medal was withdrawn," said the OCA statement.

Zhang, 28, became the first Chinese athlete caught doping in major sporting events since the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, where a number of positive cases involving Chinese swimmers were reported.

The Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) said that although the cause of Zhang's positive result is unknown yet, they fully respect the OCA's decision.

"The athlete may dope deliberately, but there also remain the possibilities that the positive reading was due to her consumption of contaminated meat," the COC said in a statement.

"Whatever the cause is, we respect the OCA's decision regarding Zhang's case, because the World Anti-Doping Code stipulates that athletes must bear the subsequences for the substance found in his or her body," added the COC.
Quite a big fish. Three time Asian Games champion, 2x Asian championship winner, 3x world championship bronze and 2008 Olympic bronze. Probably just the tip of the iceberg . Looks like their masking agents slipped.

If you don't get caught it is called sports science, if you get caught it is called doping. I think most of top athletes use performance enhancers just that our "sports science" is not developed.

This is all so thrilling. Oh I remember listening to the commentary of that Bangkok Asian Games final with TSP in 1966, gosh 48 years ago, on my old National Panasonic transistor(they had just become affordable). The match was around 3pm and India had won the Tokyo games Gold medal in 1964, so hopes were very high, Shankar Laxman was the goalie and the captain of the Indian team. Then in IIT Kharagpur one saw all the Anglos who made up the Indian hockey team of those years. Kharagpur and SER( South Eastern railway) railway colony the descendant of the old BNR(Bengal Nagpur Railway) was really a crucible of outstanding hockey players. I now only hope that this team is the nucleus of great things in the future. I have a good feeling seeing them play.

What happened to Shankar Laxman is effing shameful. He died in poverty and his end was he contracted gangrene. He was with the Maratha LI. You would think this happened a long time ago, but no he died in 2006. He was on the team that won Gold in 1956 at Melbourne, Silver at Rome in 1960, Gold in Tokyo in 1964 and captain of the team that won Gold at the Asian Games at Bangkok in 1966.

In those days if you played hockey, the hockey stick had a little tag at the bottom with autographs of the famous Olympians. Of course Dhyan Chand was great, but other names that come to mind is an Anglo, Leslie Claudius, who played for SER and last played for India at Rome, 1960. I vaguely recall he died in Kolkata a few years back.

When I was in college, the sports coach was a former gold medal olympian in hockey. Man couldn't land a job anywhere after he left the services, finally our college chairman heard his story and took pity on him and gave him a job. Heard the man passed away a few years ago and his family had to sell that gold medal :(.

In the ISL today, In pure skill and ball play, Garcia was head and shoulder above the rest without any doubt; the two goalies have shown why both are not just the bests in India but among of the bests in Asia (there is even a fan club of Paul in Japan); the last 2 goals were pure class in Indian football standard, Borjha was a real workhorse and Jr Bachchhan provided the most entertainment with his antics from VIP gallery.

Stories about our lesser known AG medalists:
Annu Rani: javelin bronze
Annu Rani: the torchbearer from Bahadurpur
Manju Bala: hammer throw silver
Manju Bala: the homecoming
Inderjeet Singh: shot put bronze
Inderjeet Singh: Big man in search of recognition
Narender Grewal: wushu bronze
Narender Grewal: once a pariah, now the toast of his village

All of them are from dirt poor backgrounds. Tea shop owners supporting hammerthrowing daugthers with extra tea sale effort, farmers crafting javelins out of bamboo to train daughters. People like these worked hard to win us medals. If we put in the kind of monetary resources the Chinese do, we'd easily be competitive with them in sports; we already have the raw material.

India defeats Malaysia in Sultan of Johor under-21 hockey

If India defeats Australia tomorrow then final will be assured between India and UK.

---

India put themselves in a good position to make the final of the SOJC by defeating Malaysia 4-2.

The win gives India 9 points from four matches and a win over Australia in Saturday will seal their place in the final.

But the win was not easily obtained as Malaysia overcome a 2-0 deficit to draw level only for India to score twice in the final minutes.

The Malaysians have only themselves to blame as they failed to hold on to the ball, often losing possession at crucial areas of the pitch.

"We only have ourselves to blame as yet again we gave away soft goals and really should have got at least a point," said Malaysian coach Arul Selvaraj.

"We have players who lack confidence and we need to get a mental trainer for the team fast."

Malaysia went on the offensive early on and forced a penalty corner in the 12th minute but it came to nought.

And in the very next minute India too wasted a penalty corner of their own.

India then forced three successive penalty corners and of the third Hermanpreet Singh scored India's opening goal in the 25th minute.

And two minutes later Hermanpreet punished Malaysia again with another drag flick into the roof of the net.

Malaysia reduced the deficit in the 37th minute as Sufi Ismat Rohulmin jinxed past two defenders and sent a reverse stick shot into goal to make it India 2 Malaysia 1.

That goal put more life into the Malaysians and in the 42nd minute Azril Misron put the finishing touches to a cross from the right by Norsyafiq Sumantri for the second goal.

Hermanpreet proved his ability in penalty corners as he scored India's third and his hattrick in the 55th minute to give India a 3-2 lead.

India were awarded a penalty stroke in the 65th minute and Varun Kumar put the result beyond doubt by scoring to make it 4-2.

India wins the Under-21 Hockey tournament.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/spor ... 879421.cms

JOHOR BAHRU (Malaysia): Harmanpreet Singh converted two penalty corners to help India sucessfully defend its Sultan of Johor Cup (SOJC) U-21 hockey title, beating Great Britain 2-1 in a keenly-contested final on Sunday.

Harmanpreet (45th and 90 minutes) slammed home two set pieces at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium to take his goals tally to eight in the tournament. For Great Britain Samuel French (55th minute) was the lone goal scorer.

Great Britain, unbeaten in the preliminary round, came into the final with a psychological advantage over India having beaten them 2-0 in their round-robin clash.

But defending champions India had a record to play for as they wanted to be the first team to win the title twice since the inception of SOJC in 2011.

Malaysia had won the inaugural title with Germany winning in 2012 and India last year. And the young Indians duely achieved their goal with a late winner from Harmanpreet.

Harmanpreet scored his second and the all-important winner for India with just 45 seconds from time by converting his second penalty corner of the day.

It was a hard-fought encounter between India and Great Britain as both the teams did not give an inch to each other atleast in the opening half.

But India finally took the lead in the 45th minute through a Harmanpreet's penalty corner conversion. Varun Kumar then got a chance to double India's lead but his attempt from a penalty corner in the 53rd flew inches wide.

Great Britain then added salt to India's wound when French converted a penalty corner in the 55th minute to level scores at 1-1.

A controversy then erupted in the 62nd minute when Indian custodian Abhnav Pandey was shown the green card and an outfield player was taken off to bring on substitute keeper Subodh Tirkey.

With the match heading towards a shot-off, India were awarded another penalty corner just 45 seconds from the hooter and Harmanpreet duly convert the chance to help India retain the title.

In the bronze medal play-off earlier in the day, Australia defeated New Zealand 6-2 to finish third.
Hockey India president Narinder Batra congratulated the colts for their terrific achievement.

"Similar to the Indian men's national team at the 17th Asian Games, the Indian junior team too has brought us pride by winning the Sultan of Johor Cup for the second time and given us yet another reason to celebrate the laurels they have brought home today," he said.

"I would like to congratulate all the players and coach Harendra Singh along with all the members of the support staff on this proud moment and wish them all the luck for their future endeavours."

Speaking on winning the fourth Sultan of Johor Cup title, junior men's team Harendra said: "I feel elated with pride and joy to see this young brigade retaining the title today.

"It was anyone's game after the scores were tied in the 56th minute. This team has shown immense potential to emerge as the one of the best teams in the world with the kind of class and dignity they have showed today. Our aim was to concentrate on the interception and keeping the possession of the ball as well as keeping a composed attitude. I am proud to see that the team worked on the exact framework and preserved the title."

Yes, Athelitico Kolkata in the first three and Mumbai in the last match were international class. It is being beamed world-wide. I think if this becomes successful football played by the I-league and East Bengal, Mohan Bagan, Dempo, Salgaocar, etc will become tiny events.

Interesting story on India's unheralded female gymnast Dipa Karmarkar, and her coach Bishweshwar Nandi. She's India's best ever gymnast, 3rd at CWG 2014, 4th at AG 2014, and 10th at 2014 world championships in vault, all by far the best ever performance by an Indian woman. There's an interesting interview with the US coach consulting with our gymnastics federation, who describes the insanity of what Nandi is doing with Dipa: in the absence of a base of gymnastic talent, Nandi is using Dipa's brute strength and courage to win points by doing among the most hardest and dangerous vault moves ever - the Produnova. Getting it wrong means you land on your neck and die. There's an attempt to ban it because of its danger. Dipa won the bronze in CWG by landing it, and almost made the World 2014 final by landing it again. It's a risky and dangerouc tactic - take someone with practically no world exposure and turn her into a top 10 vaulter by making her do some of the most dangerous moves ever, that none of her active competitors today are doing:

Dipa landed the Produnova perfectly at CWG 2014. It gave her such a high score that she went from 6th or 7th to bronze:

In the back of the video you can see difficulty level 7.00 listed, the highest level of difficulty of any vault .

baastards are banning Sarita. WTF.

http://indianexpress.com/article/sports ... t-the-ban/
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has provisionally suspended Sarita Devi for refusing to accept the bronze medal at the Incheon Asian Games earlier this month. The AIBA also barred her from competing in the World Championships that will be held next month at the Jeju Islands. Along with Sarita, boxing coaches Gurbax Singh Sandhu, BI Fernandez, Sagar Mal Dayal and India’s chef de mission for the Asian Games Adille Sumariwalla too have been slapped with provisional suspensions by the AIBA. -

Agreed not bad, but at what cost? The no.of of imports per team will not translate in upping the football standards of locals....Great example Biturds national team VS EPL.

First you need to establish the league as financially viable. You are not going to that by forming teams only with players from a country which is 154 in rankings. Witness the popularity of the I-league and other football events in India. To sell you need both good football and celebrities. Once you have that you build local talent. England is only one example but the popular German, Spanish, Italian and French leagues have produced world cup winners.

India is playing a 4 match hockey series with Australia in Perth. Yesterday in the first match India lost 4-0.

Today India beat Australia 2-1. This is India's first victory over Australia after 4 years. The recording of the match is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONOwF6u ... --7qmg-u4X . Indian goals are between 1:34 and 1:37, Both of them are pretty good goals. The speed at which hockey is being played is amazing.

The matches are being telecast live on hockey Australia Youtube channel. The last 2 matches are on 8th and 9th.

Those are fantastic counter attacking goals from our team. The second one in particular - the guy outran all three Aussies all the way to their D while controlling the ball with one hand all the way, and smacked it past the goalie. They did the same thing in AG2014 semifinal, outrunning the Koreans, who are known for fitness and speed. Clearly still have our field goal game and speed. Stronger penalty corner conversion seems like the remaining hurdle, since not everyone will let us run freely all the time.

Thanks for posting these links to hockey!

Indian hockey team is doing two things.

1. Historically when Indian hockey team gets a corner they were conceding a goal to a counter attack., they are starting to eliminate this and use it to their advantage.

2. Full Backs and Middle fielders are trying to keep the control of the ball (very good tactics)

3. Excellent Goal keeper!!!

Australia is rated #1 team at this time!

Shakib Al Hasan become top-ranked all-rounder in ICC test rankings

Image

- See more at: http://www.patrika.com/news/shakib-al-h ... gs/1045085

Seria A is faltering, French were in doldrums before middle-east invst in PSG & Monaco, Spanish is Real-Barca league, not a good plan to follow. Less said about EPL, the better.

Only aberration is Bundesliga, which should be what emerging country should follow, I am talking here about finance, governing structure & building strong talent base at the grass roots level.
