Srikanth lost to Momota as well, and with that the men bow out. Just Saina Nehwal left.

Praneeth is a nobody qualifier to the event, making the main draw because Kashyap was injured. His performance against LCW was excellent, but I think he lacks the experience and maturity to carry it through on back to back days. But he has excellent court coverage and power, and can improve.

There's an article about Sai Praneeth in Indian Express. The gist is that he was assumed to be the one most likely to succeed among the new bunch, but is unwilling to work hard or stay motivated. Srikanth has similar issues, though he has gone much further. Our men are still more content to be giant killers than strive to become the giants. The difference is mainly about the focus and hard work they put in. That's what distinguishes the Chinese sportsmen - their capacity for hard work and their mental strength. A player with Srikanth's natural flair and Nehwal's capacity for work would be a giant.

Do we have a formal concept of inter high school, or inter-college sports? with one schools playing (football, kabadi, track & field, swimming, table tennis, lawn tennis, lacrosse, squash, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, etc) against each outer leading up to state and national championships?

What is it called? for example in massa land you have varsity level sports leading to county and state championship, and in college you have NCAA division 1, 2, 3 leading to national championship for any given sport.

I guess my question is what is the structure or organization leading up to the hierarchy of national championship for our educational institutions?

Pakistan seeks UN intervention after losing to India yet again

Following last night's defeat at Eden Gardens, Pakistan has complained to the UN Security Council, alleging that India should stop winning each and every World Cup game played between both the nations, if it really wants to improve relations.

India chased down 119 in 15.5 overs, thereby outshining Pakistan in a World Cup encounter for the 11th time on the trot. Going by India's supreme record, Pakistan cricket team has declined to play against India in future World Cup matches. In order to not let this happen again, the government of Pakistan has written to United Nations Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon and has sought UN's intervention.

Following is the text of the letter to the UN Secretary General:

"Excellency, I write to bring to your urgent attention the inhuman treatment that Pakistan cricket team has met at the hands of MS Dhoni and company. We were hoping to win this time, thereby finally putting an end to our losing streak. The support we received from JNU had pumped us up and we were sure victory would be ours.

But Virat Kohli stood between us and victory. Just like Kashmir, we failed to take this match home as well. Pakistan has constantly launched attacks on India over the years, and now India is striking back by unleashing Kohli on us. The only difference is that India is fighting in a fair and legal way.

I request you to urge India to stop these unprovoked and deliberate violations. Otherwise, as always, we will have to take America's help."

Ban ki-Moon replied to the letter and wrote, "Dear Pakistan, this is the fifth time this week that you are seeking UN's intervention. How about your team retire from playing cricket if you cannot win against India in World Cup matches? But then you would take a U-turn on retirement decision like Shahid Afridi and start playing again, only to lose to India in World Cup."

Yogeshwar Dutt qualified for the Olympics by winning the Asian Qualifying Championships in 66kg . He had to move up a weight class from 60kg to 66kg , but so far has won every tournament in his new weight class. Sushil Kumar moves up to 74kg. We put up a surprisingly strong show in Greco-Roman wrestling in the Asian Qualifiers and the 2016 Asian Championships. Hardeep made it to the final of the 98kg Greco-Roman event, also booking his berth to Rio. Typically we do much better in Freestyle, but we gained more medals in Greco-Roman in this years Asian event:
2016 Asian Wrestling Championships
We also gained a silver and 2 bronzes from the female wrestlers. However, world level competition would be much harder because Japan have the best womens wrestlers in the world, like Saori Yoshida, who's been undefeated in every international event she ever participated in, across 3 Olympics and 14 world championships: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saori_Yoshida

Last week, Gurmeet Singh became the first Indian race walker to win an Asian Championship, winning gold in the 20km race in Japan.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_Rac ... mpionships
He had medaled in the event multiple times in past Asian Championships, but this is the first time he won the gold. His time is well within world standards, similar to Irfan Thodi's 1:20 time at the 2012 Olympics which led him to finish in 10th place. Gurmeet has since been more consistent.

Went to watch India open badminton today. All mens singles lost. Most of the mens doubles lost too.
It was disappointing. Not for want of talent or ability but mostly because of inability to know how to win.
Srikanth is mentally weak. Prannoy should ve won against an opponent he beat a week ago when he won the german open but lost.

In contrast the japanese youngsters looked impressive even in defeat. They spewed a lot of venom when on court.
Looks like back to qualifiers for Srikanth. The battery of coaching staff has to blame for this, IMHO.

It was shocking to see Rituparna Das playing all nervous against Ratchanok in India Open today. She is one of the talented youngsters in womens sigles for India. That she was so nervous only means that she has not had sufficient exposure at the larger stage. Are we too focussed on Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu?! Why arent we sending our second rung players abroad to participate in events?

They do participate but get eliminated early. Indian representation in international tournaments is pretty good. What we lack are quality players in the top 10. At best you can hope for 3 top ranked players in singles and two pair in doubles. Sindhu hasn't moved up and Srikanth is struggling. That leaves only Saina. The others haven't made it yet. But we have quite a few juniors who will start coming onto the scene in a couple of years.

Today I was speaking to a former Chief Secretary of Kerala and exactly this topic came up. Kerala had instituted state level, University level, district level and school level championships for Performing Arts & Sports for the past 40 years at least. The change that brought to these fields is also evident as per him. The number of students who opt for sports and Performing arts is growing with better quality too. Among the fine arts arena, there were only few teachers for various dance and music art forms and they were all slowly dying. But since competitions came, there was a sea change, and even the dying art forms now find teachers every where

Same is with sports, with Kerala in almost of sports disciplines

But the negative side being that, there are lot of interference with the judgments which even reaches courts. It means that these competitions are coveted for

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: India thrash Pakistan 5-1 to jump to second spot
IPOH (Malaysia): A dominant Indian hammered arch-rivals Pakistan 5-1 with SV Sunil striking twice in a round-robin league match of the Sultan Azlan Cup hockey tournament on Tuesday.

The highlight of the match was four fantastic field goals from India while the other came from a penalty corner conversion.

After their scrappy win over Canada in the last match, the Indians rose to the occasion and looked more orgainsed and purposeful against Pakistan.

It took India just four minutes to take the lead through Manpreet Singh, who scored with a fierce reverse shot from a tight angle after being fed by Sunil.

But Pakistan equalised three minutes later when skipper Muhammad Irfan (7th minute) converted the second of their successive penalty corners.

India restored their lead in the 10th minute through Sunil, who scored with a deft touch off Manpreet's shot from outside the circle.

It was all India after the change of ends as they pumped in as many as three goals to run away with the match.

Sunil scored his second goal of the day in the 41st minute before Talwinder Singh entered the score sheet in the 50th minute with another field strike.

Rupinder Pal Singh then converted a penalty corner in the 54th minute to make the scoreline 5-1.

The final scoreline could have been more impressive for India had Rupinder not missed a penalty stroke in the final five minutes of the match.

India will next play defending champions New Zealand on Wednesday.

India is the second highest ranked team in this tournament. If they didn't make the final it would have meant they were not ready for Rio. Their real challenge is against Australia and to a lesser extent NZ.

New Zealand has actually lost to Malaysia in their opener (3-2) and drew with Canada (1-1) They also lost to Australia (1-0), defeated Bakis 5-3.

So it is going to be a good match.

India lose 1-2 to NZ, and need to beat Malaysia to make the final vs Australia, ahead of NZ. NZ have already finished all their 6 matches for 11 points. We have 9 points from 5 matches and will have 12 if we beat Malaysia.

Massive khujli.

While Pakistan take on Japan in a match that decides which of the two sides finishes bottom, arch-rivals India take on Malaysia in a bid to reach the final of the 25th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ioph, Malaysia today.
“The federation was unable to motivate the players against India,” said Samiullah Khan, feeling that some sort of prize money should have been announced as an added incentive like the Indians did. “Regardless of how badly we play against other teams, our players have always picked up their game against India and shown passion. Unfortunately in this tournament they were unable to do so.”

“India are improving so fast that their juniors are now performing better than our seniors,” he said. Meanwhile, former captain Hasan Sardar also rued the dismal state of Pakistan hockey. “Now they are losing matches against India with big margins. A lot of brain storming is required to get things on track,” he said.

IMHO, a battery of coaches is not relly needed. There is nothing wrong with their game. Just lacking confidence and under pressure. They will do well to play without coaches and just enjoy the game.

Mental conditioning is very critical in sports nowadays and that needs specialists. I think Gopichand has the ability to mass produce international players but may not have the capability to make them champions. They don't need a battery of coaches just one who will focus on them like the tennis players have.

India down 0-3 against Australia. Couldn't watch after that. This coach is making them play defensive hockey against good teams and not letting their potential to win matches against such teams develop. This strategy is not working.

Anyway! Do not forget that Aussies are rated no.1 in the world. This Indian hockey team is progressing fine towards the Olympics game in August. Women's hockey is currently rated at 13th. They should try to become no.1 in Asia!

Women's team is playing 5 matches against Brits in England starting May 1st.
Then India is playing 6 nations cup in Spain against Spain, Germany , New Zealand, Ireland, Argentina

Then from July 10 - July 22nd Indian hockey teams (both men and women) will play in Argentina and Brazil (local clubs)
Good schedule! and awesome practice matches against all the good teams in world.

Olympics starts on August 5th.

Go Team India!!
