For the companies, profit. For people, efficiency. In the US, Monsanto's chief concern is raising corn yields to keep the beef production high. Elsewhere, they can focus on drought resistant crops and reduce the impact of water shortages (i.e California's crisis this year). They make money, but like John Deere and their GPS sensored combines reducing fertilizer waste, they also save money.

Most people who complain about GMOs typically don't know what a genetic modification, or even a gene, really is. There are valid concerns here and there, but they are drowned out among the throngs of uninformed reading OrganicNaturalNews.net and making horrible scientific assumptions from very maliciously intentional misleading information.

A GMO largely expedites the process of breeding to preselected/inserted/desired genes. CP4 Roundup reduces fertilizer usage by improving its efficacy. We're either going to starve or switch to GMOs.
