Delhi Metro Starts Tunneling on Pink Line from RK Puram Shaft to Bhikaji Cama Place
As expected, FEMC-Pratibha – the Delhi Metro’s contractor for the 58.59 km Pink line’s underground section between RK Puram and Lajpat Nagar (CC-18) has started tunneling on the westbound up-line tunnel between the RK Puram shaft and the Bhikaji Cama Place station! The tunneling distance between the two points is roughly 400 meters, so a breakthrough can be expected to take place as early as February 2016.

Latest updates for Namma Metro:
1. The newly inaugurated Reach 2, on Nov 11, 2015 will be shut down till Dec 12th and will be operational from 9am to 7pm from Dec 13th to Dec 20th to facilitate integration of the signalling system for the underground portion EW with the above ground portions of Reaches 1 ( Bypanahalli to MG Rd.) and Reach 2(Magadi Rd to Mysore Rd.) which are operational.

2. Bangalore metro is trying to operationalize the entire EW portion by end January. This is optimistic. Currently derailment coefficient tests are going on in the UG portions EW. Following that there will be tests of the signals and communication systems that will last more than a month even 2 months according to the MD, Namma Metro.
These current tests entailing the measurement of derailment coefficients are being monitored by RDSO and some French experts. Following this and post signals integration and tests, the CRS will have to certify and so one hopes commercial operations begin by March.

3. The EW trains when running will NOT stop at the Majestic interchange which connects the NS and EW lines.
This nodal station which is UG is incomplete and will be functional when the NS lines are operational.

4. Approximately 1470m of tunneling is left NS. EW tunnels are long finished see the points 1-3 above.
Completion of 1470m of tunneling will finish all tunneling activities in Phase 1.

5. As a poster has pointed out cracks developed in buildings above TBM Kaveri. This TBM has halted so that individuals can vacate buildings that may collapse. Kaveri was to have started to move last Tuesday. Kaveri has tunneled 539m and 208m is left for breakthrough at Majestic. This will end its job for Phase 1.

6. TBM Krishna tunneling parallel to Kaveri has yet to start its drive of 747m from Chikpet station to Majestic. Most likely it will start Dec 13th. It is undergoing refurbishment of its cutters at Chikpet station.
This TBM is the one that will delay the project. Like Kaveri it will tunnel parallel to it and under decrepit buildings in the densely populated Chikpet area and so will have to proceed slowly. Like Kaveri there is the possibility of buildings above it caving in, developing cracks etc.

7. TBM Margarita has finished tunneling 973m from Majestic to North ramp at Mantri Mall/Sampige rd. Grouting operations are being carried out on the finished tunnel. Preparations are also being made to pour concrete to prepare the bed to lay the tracks in the finished tunnel. This is the longest tunnel in Phase 1 of NM.

8. TBM Godavari that was dormant for a year due to a broken cutter head, has now tunneled 461m parallel to Margarita from Sampige Rd/Mantri Mall towards Majestic. It needs to tunnel 512m more and be done for Phase 1.

9. Tunneling for Godavari will be substantially easier once it tunnels 110m more as it has gone past already the dense granite strata that broke its cutter head which was partly inexperienced contractors. It should breakthrough at Majestic in about 5 months.

10. All above ground reaches are essentially complete. Reaches 1,2,3 are commercially operational. Reach 4 is essentially ready but cut-off from the NS depot at Peenya since the UG portion of NS is incomplete. Plans by BMRC to hoist trainsets on Reach 4 and operate Reach 4 as a separate entity have been dropped. So the above ground Reach 4( Banashankari to Chikpet-Majestic) will be operational once NS UG is ready.

11. I have seen many of the Metro stations up close in the last weeks, on the way to work. The construction is shoddy. Thought has not gone into the stations. Absence of service roads creates severe and serious traffic bottlenecks. Access to the stations in some places is difficult. At one station on Reach 3, people have to cross a busy National highway(Tumkur rd.) making such a journey hazardous. Some panels of the station have not been affixed, perhaps at some future time there will be a overbridge connecting to the station at the missing panels. Paint is already gone and signage has letters missing a year into operations. Fancy art work has paint running off and construction debris still lies around in operational sections. Rivets at the joints connecting roof panels have given way, perhaps leading to leaky roofs that were reported during rain showers at stations esp. in Reach 3.

http://www.newindianexpress.com/cities/ ... 120383.ece

The MD Namma Metro also looks after the Tourism department for the state of Karnataka. Perhaps the powers that be should at least appoint a full time MD who can worry about this project, that is already over budget and massively late.

just asking if 80% of the pillar is just compressed iron/steel, and 20% external surface concrete.. the size can be brought down to 1/3rd. no? would it still pass - just injun-eering pooch onlee.

Kochi Metro’s rail-laying pace set to double
Rail-laying work for Kochi Metro is set to double its speed in a week as another batch of workers is set to be deployed soon.

Ircon (a sister concern of Indian Railway) – the contractor entrusted with the works, is laying an average of 45 metres of rails daily using a batch of its workforce. This will double to 90 metres when another batch is deployed from Wednesday. Two more batches will join in by January, taking the quantum of rails laid each day to 200 metres, said Dani Thomas, Kochi Project Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The firm has so far completed laying 3.5 km of rails in the Kalamassery region and within the coach-maintenance yard at Muttom, while 9 km of rails have been fused together. The up-lane from Aluva to the city is being given preference in rail-laying, to conduct trial runs from early 2016 in the Aluva-Palarivattom corridor. The first batch of three coaches for Kochi Metro is expected to arrive here in January first week.

Yeah, there must have been another reason for this span that's not obvious to us. Perhaps a water main or something. Otherwise, making a median a few feet wider for a short distance is not that much of a challenge :)

The median on that road is actually not too wide, so that would have been one reason.

If they built a pillar there, then this would have happened (courtesy my limited ms paint skills):
Image
Blue circle=pillar

Driving in one's lane is unknown of, so placing this on the median wouldn't have been a hazard but that shouldn't prevent metro corps to design the line in the right way.

An artist's impression of Nagpur's interchange station from Nagpur Metro's FB page.

The key here is "artist's impression". Designs have not been been finalized yet. What's known is that it will be a part of a 25 storey building.

2 reasons - 1) Policy paralysis and 2) Highly incompetent executives in the MMRDA who should frankly stick to building roads.

Construction on these 3 lines will start next year:

1) Colaba - SEEPZ (33.5 km)
The previous MH government for the longest time was fixated on the PPP model and that slowed things down considerably. Then in 2011, the 33.5 km line 3 from Colaba-SEEPZ was announced in its current avatar. This September, the financial bids were opened and the lowest bidders were announced. Contracts are expected to be handed out within the next 30 days.

2) Dahisar to DN Nagar (18.6 km)
This section of Line 2 was awarded to Reliance ADAG in 2008 but work never began since the land for the both depots was not available due. Devendra Fadnavis met with DMRC's chief earlier this year and now the MMRDA has appointed the DMRC to execute its construction. A new land parcel has been found in Malad for the depot and will soon be taken over. The tendering process to appoint civil construction contractors will begin in another month.

3) Dahisar (E) to Andheri (E) (16.5 km) - This line on the Western Express Highway just cropped up this year and the tendering process will begin in a month or so. DMRC has been appointed as the interim consultant.

Telangana Govt puts Hyderabad's Old City Metro section on back burner
HYDERABAD: After dilly-dallying for a year, the Telangana government has finally decided to stick to the original alignment for metro rail project at Assembly and Sultan Bazar recently. But the state government is playing the cards close to its chest with regard to metro rail alignment in the Old City which is part of corridor II from Jubilee Bus Station to Falaknuma.

Government sources said the government has not taken any decision on Old City in view of the GHMC elections scheduled for January , 2016. The CM wants to take a final call on the realignment only after the elections as both the GHMC and Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) Limited have to bulldoze nearly 1,050 properties to widen roads in Old City. The ruling party fears that any decision would adversely impact its prospects in the elections and opposition would also raise the issue during the election campaign. Interestingly, there are about 50 municipal divisions in Old City alone which can decide the fate of political parties and mayorship in GHMC council.

The BMRCL has a perfect track record of talking out of turn, promising the moon and delivering far short of what they say. The report above is based on the premise that the CRS inspections will be smooth. First the CRS may not be free to come down ASAP. In the past he was held up by train derailment reports near Hosur etc. Secondly many times he has said documents sent over by BMRCL were incomplete before inspections can start. Note this is the first UG section that the CRS will inspect on NM, so the documentation will be necessarily different than the above ground sections.

If you notice the BMRC newsletters, for months it says "one exit at Northwest side at Cubbon Park and at Vidhan Soudha still to be constructed". What sort of exits are these at the two stations? Kya kuch Raja ka Nakkar khana hai? The latest news letter says that Alumino Thermic welding, (# of joints are given)is still to be performed on EW line. Same number of welds in November newsletter. Is this cut and paste problem or a real issue.
Mr. Vasanth Rao, spokesperson BMRC is on record in his Twitter account that Geotechnical survey on Phase I was not done at short intervals and this lead to various issues with varying terrain in Phase I. So from late Jan, it has moved to Feb. now it will move some more. Instead of giving these moving dates, why not just keep quiet, wait for CRS inspection and report and then contact Mantrijis etc. Note Mantrijis etc have also held up inauguration on Namma Metro.

Yes, I know, they said TBM Krishna starts Dec 13th. The more serious problem is that they cannot seal off this Chikpet station with a roof slab. Because the muck from TBM Krishna has to be hauled out here, it is a EPBM.
So till Krishna finishes its 747m drive, Chikpet will be in some partial state of completeness. I also am not sure
why they cannot set down rails from South ramp to Chikpet station as the tunneling is over. They can make the cross passages, lay the concrete bed for the tracks and get on with life. Since this is an EPBM, one does not have a slurry plant like Margarita and Helen did at Majestic and so no impediment there on that count for Krishna and Kaveri with slurry pipes in tunnels snaking all the way back to South ramp. The tunnels from Chikpet to South ramp must be clear of all pipes and pumps and other impedimenta. So why not build the cross passages, and start the business of track laying.

Incidentally there are pics of the slurry plant at Majestic getting dismantled in the last few days. It has been there since 2011, when the TBM's Helen and Margarita started EW. Margarita stayed on even for NS and is now done with its last drive of 973m from Majestic( necessarily so as the slurry plant was there) to Sampige Rd./ Mantri Mall. Also there are pics on Flikr of the laying of the concrete bed for tracks in the tunnel that Margarita just completed. Please do the honors and post the pics here if you feel like it.

Corruption is at play. Payments are being demanded from lowest bidder by people in opposition and those acting like opposition. I know from chaiwala who's chacha's damaad was present in such meetings. L1 is threatening to walk away from the contract.

Since we are on the topic of flooding etc in Chennai. The KR market area that is near one UG station of NM is actually a lake bed, Lingambudhi kere(lake in Kannada). Also the intersection of the NS and EW lines at Majestic, was a lake, Dharmambudhi lake, the UG station here is really under the lake bed. The lake was paved over to make the Bangalore central bus station that is now gone to facilitate NM construction. Koramangala lake was paved over and the National Games Village built over it. During the monsoon, the surrounding slums of Ejipura gets all the water from Koramangala. Tampering with topography without paying heed to natural contours of the land has a price. Then the DC has to go in and demolish 2000 houses overnight as in Kanchipuram district because people built on lake beds and water has nowhere to flow.

That's good to know they've immediately started other works inside the tunnel and not waited for the entire line to be completed. As you know, it's quite shameful that the Purple line's underground section will open an entire 2 years after tunneling was completed.

Hyderabad's Raidurg metro station on course
The Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) authorities are making sure that work on the extended stretch between Hitec metro station and Raidurg terminal moves fast without causing inconvenience to moving traffic.

In a recently conducted meeting, HMR, MD NVS Reddy directed design engineers of L&TMRHL to see that the metro pillars do not reduce the available road carriage way and should be located either on the central median or to the edge of the road. The pillars are to be designed in such a way that one column in the central median portion and another column is on the edge of the road. Service roads would be provided on either side, informed HMR officials.

With the terminal coming up at Raidurg more than two lakh people working in the financial district would be benefitted. Initially, Shilparamam was the last station but after requests from the IT companies and associations, the Government gave the green signal to extend the line. Now, the train would take a left turn near Hitec city and culminate near Mindspace-Raheja at Raidurg. The extension of the corridor would increase the cost by more than Rs 200 crore in corridor-III.

Delhi Metro Starts Tunneling on Pink Line from Naraina Vihar to Mayapuri Shaft
On this Tuesday, the J Kumar-CRTG JV started tunneling on the Delhi Metro’s new Pink line’s down-line tunnel between the Naraina Vihar station and the Mayapuri shaft! This 310m tunnel section in south-west Delhi is part of the Delhi Cantonment to Mayapuri section (CC-20) of the 58.59 km Pink line which is being constructed as part of the 159 km Phase 3 project.
....
With the launch of this TBM and the one yesterday at RK Puram, all 14 underground sections of the Pink line are now either ‘In Progress’ or ‘Complete’ – see complete list here.

Absolutely agree! Here is the pic, of concreting for track bed inside the tunnel that Margarita dug. So at least within a month ( Nov 7 breakthrough) they have started track laying activity.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =3&theater

A lot of the pics, like the one above came from the TBM operators for Margarita and Helen who were Thai.
The TBM operators for Krishna and Kaveri were Indian and never posted any pics. Thus in the future if a timeline is made, it will essentially have a lot of Margarita and Helen pics.

Delhi Metro TBM Makes a Breakthrough at Magenta Line’s Panchsheel Park Station
Yesterday evening at about 5 pm, a TBM deployed by the FEMC-Pratibha JV (CC-23) made a breakthrough at the Panchsheel Park station on the new 38.235 km Magenta line! This TBM bored a roughly 635m long tunnel for the line’s up-line after being launched from the Chirag Delhi station in July.

Japan funds fillip to East-West Metro
The Japanese agency providing funds for East-West Metro has agreed to bear a part of its escalated cost, an approval without which the project might have become uncertain.

Representatives of the Japan International Co-operation Agency (Jica) visited the project's sites at Salt Lake's Duttabad and Howrah Maidan and a proposed station site at Esplanade on Thursday. They were accompanied by officials of the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation, the implementing agency for the project, and the construction companies. The cost of East-West Metro, which will connect Sector V with Howrah Maidan, has been revised from Rs 4,875 crore to Rs 8,996 crore after a seven-year land logjam during which only 42 per cent of the work was completed.

Jica is providing 46 per cent of the original project cost. Officials involved in the project said the project would have faced uncertainty if Jica did not agree to fund a part of the additional cost.

I lived there for 4 years! its a posh layout now, right opp BDA blocks in koramangala.

old timers claim people with shotguns used to hunt birds there 20 yrs ago.
Half of the inbound population in BLR around 1999-2000 timeframe (including me) have stayed in S.T.Bed Layout in one time or another.

Then on the other side of St. Johns we have Tavarekere. No wonder that even a frog's piss causes flood.

Metrometrics With Measuring Wheel Set
BENGALURU: To clearly check all the forces that act on the wheels of a train when it is chugging at full speed, Namma Metro deployed a measuring wheel set, readied in Sweden, over the last fortnight. The wheel set was attached to the trains that ran along the East-West corridor at a speed of 90 km/hour. The 18.10-km East-West corridor (Purple Line) connects Byappanahalli with Mysuru Road.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation MD Pradeep Singh Kharola told Express, “This is a very sophisticated experiment. We volunteered to be the first Metro in the country to try it out.”

Officials from Delhi Metro came down to the City to understand the process, he said. The measuring wheel set was used by Namma Metro during the oscillatory trials conducted along the corridor. Lucknow-based Research Designs and Standard Organisation (RDSO) facilitated these trials. “Specialists from Europe, who have conducted many such trials, came to the city to record it. They have collected volumes of data to assess the performance of the trains. A report on the findings will be out by early January,” Kharola said.

Kharola said a pair of wheels of a Metro train was sent to Sweden and a huge number of measuring instruments were attached to it to convert it into a measuring wheel set. On its significance, he said, “All along, we have been running trains on theoretical calculations. This is a practical calculation of the interaction between the wheel and the rail.” On the progress made towards opening the entire East-West corridor, Kharola said signaling work is now under way. “Signaling work in underground stations is coming to a close. It will take us one-and-a-half months to complete the work,” he said.

Hehehe, somebody in BMRC is reading this thread and my rants above including precisely this point. Today's news: BMRC is going to build three under passes to facilitate people to cross NH-4 and not get killed going to Peenya Metro station. Too many deaths before this morons realized this elementary fact. So the overbridge is shelved, the panels have to be closed in the station and yes NHAI has to still approve the design of the under passes. But OK, a positive step. Must be all the howling I do at the moon in RR nagar must have scared Kharola( MD Namma Metro): yeh Bengalauru mein kya janwaar aa gaya.
