Assam serial blasts: 25 dead, over 140 injured
Expressindia.com
Posted: Oct 30, 2008 at 1314 hrs IST

Four bomb blasts rocked Guwahati's commercial areas of Pan Bazar, Fancy Bazar and Ganeshguri.

Guwahati, October 30: : More than 25 people were killed and over 140 injured in 18 serial blasts that rocked busy areas of Guwahati and three other districts in Assam on Thursday.
The powerful bombs went off simultaneously at around 11.30 AM with four of them hitting capital Guwahati, three each in Barpeta and Kokrajhar while one in Bongaigaon, according to official sources.

At least 10 people have been killed in Guwahati, while two others died in Kokrajhar, they said.

The first blast in Guwahati occurred at a vegetable and fruit market at Ganeshguri near the flyover adjacent to the high security secretariat and the Assembly.

The blast caused a major fire in the area with smoke engulfing the entire market and nearby places.
The second bomb exploded in front of the Kamrup district deputy commissioner's office, injuring many and destroying several cars parked there, the sources said.

The third explosion rocked areas near the police station of the busy Fancy Bazar, triggering panic among shoppers, many of whom were injured, the sources said.

Guwahati Superintendent of Police G P Singh said that police and fire brigade were engaged in controlling the fire.

In Kokrajhar, the explosives were suspected to have been planted in a two-wheelers.

Thick smoke billowed after the high intensity blasts which turned a number of cars, cycles and two wheelers into mangled heaps of metal.

The casualty figures were likely to rise with the condition of many of the injured being critical, the sources said.

I'm not from NE but looks like the old dawg ULFA. They were able to pull off a serial blast attack during Durga pooja in Tripura in conjunction with All Tripura Tiger Force. There appears to be a consolidation of anti-national forces in NE. Will have to wait and watch.

The blasts in Tripura were also found to be similar to the ones in other places. A broad alliance of HUJI, ULFA and other forces appears to be taking shape.

Am in Guwahati at present. 13 blasts reported, at least 6 in Guwahati, 40 dead and 150 injured. Gruesome video on TV. Curfew is clamped in Guwahati. Cell phone service down.

Can't think who would benefit from these blasts except pakis and beedees. ULFA is more or less done for with all their major combatant battalions coming over ground with recent economic expansion and jobs being created. Paki flags being raised during recent Bodo-beedee disturbances has raised the hackles of everyone and mantris are under the gun to not go overboard in their support and protection of "bengali-speaking Indian Muslims". Serial nature of explosions also point to jihadis.

Update: Official toll now 48 dead and at least 300 injured. 25 deaths and 150 injured in GHY itself.

Home minister condemns Assam blasts
New Delhi, Oct 30 (IANS)Home Minister Shivraj Patil Thursday condemned the serial blasts in Assam that have killed at least 30 people and injured over 100, even as he went into an urgent meeting with National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan to discuss measures to control the situation.Separately, Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta spoke to Assam Chief Secretary P.C. Sharma, saying the situation was being closely monitored.
No need to worry onlee. Home minister has condemned andsituation is being monitored as usual. Now who is going to 'express shock'?

I think we should have a running "Bomb Blasts in...." thread.

What is the point of creating a new thread every week? The same thread can be updated again and again.

I am pretty serious.

Our HM should be upon his inevitable future death, be preserved as a tribute to Indian culture-the art of the puppet,as with every terrorist outrage, marionette like, immaculately dresssed,he utters the same words time and time again! In fact his Pinnochio like performances so enthral his party that they cannot dream of replacing him with another puppet."None is likle him",they cry, wondering whether his clothes are made of Teflon or Kevlar,as no criticism of his impotent ministerial performance seems to have any effect. He amazingly seems to also have no heart or conscience whatsoever! No outrage however gruesome ruffles him.In truth,he is the perfect "cool cat",creaseless and unruffled by all the noise and chaos of terrorism around him.The famous bard of the Raj,Kipling, probably had a being like him in mind when he wrote that famous poem "If".After the Tanjore Doll and Tipu's famous "Tiger" toy,Shivraj Patil must surely be India's most famous toy produced by he Congress Puppet Factory.

From the casualty figure they appear to have been small bombs. It is scary to think if these scums were to get their hands on to more powerful ones, given their ability to plant them clandestinely. Again, it points to the need to make the police more well equipped, the job of being a policeman more respectable and desirable and intel agencies helping them create a network of informers. Terrorism should be the biggest issue for the next elections.

on a more serious note; we should stop the practice of opening new threads to monitor these incidents. Whats the point; the rate at which things are going; before UPA is done doing India; there will be more threads on these incidents than any other issue 10:1.

Where's my blanket now; zzzzzzzzz

Condolences to the victims families, 56 dead 350 injured is no minor deal.

Just another symptom of the infection that has slowly spread through the Indian body politic. Unless someting radically changes i fully expect to see many many more of these blast threads in the coming years. Pretty sad.

Can anyone answer me the question as to how these terrorists so easily get their dirty hands on bomb making material, what sort of bombs are they using, are they ammonium-nitrate ie fertilizer bombs or somthing else. Cant the government track ammonium-nitrate shipments and ensure they are getting to the people intended ie farmers and not terrorists?

Being an NRI these blasts happening with increasing frequency paint a very bad picture of India indeed, they reveal an impotent central and state governments unable to deal effectively with terrorist threats, i really dont want to see India go down the Pakistan route of continual bomb blasts creating a climate of insecurity and fear. India's perception may change to be seen as an unsafe country and this could really affect FDI. There are no upsides and all downsides from these terrorist attacks. This may seem an obvious statement but even for the terrorists themselves, what do they hope to exactly achieve in killing at random 56 civillians and injuring hundreds more?

The western media.True to form,Playing the same record each time,"Separatist groups have been fighting for many years....".You could add,Kashmir,north-east states,Lanka, whatever to those words.Other than the great western democracies, the rest of the world has only nations with separatist movements, where human right groups, evangelicals and an assortment of NGOs should protect them from the hated anti-human states. The perpetrators of these acts also live happily as political refugees in the UK,etc.,happily plotting and planning further subversion against the concerned countries like India,Lanka, etc.I suggest a total ban on foreigners and the foreign media from sensitive border states which are being affected by terrorism.Sri Lanka is doing just that in the war affecetd areas where they are fighting the LTTE.Vested media and foreign interests thus have no chance to muddy the waters further. The method is the same.Moral and covert support for separatists and then send in the media to watch the results! Did we not have a Bond film on the same theme that was a take on Murdoch?

they were not small blasts. the one in fruit market ganeshguri
was placed under a flyover and scorched many cars. my inlaws
house is behind this market. last time a bomb exploded their
windows rattled, this time too I am sure. being 1km from dispur
capital complex and a busy market, flyover and 4-way x-road it
is a past ulfa haunt for bomb blasts.

the DC office took out a open area between the new and old buildings on bank of brahmaputra right opp the GPO and stones
throw from SBI-HQ, DC bungalow and cotton college.

the fancy bazar PS is opp the large dist hospital, always full of
patients from here and there plus shoppers going to the bazar.

defintely much more than a "throw grenade and run" kind of op.
ULFA is stepping up to the next level here.

need to be shot like the rabid dogs they are. I would say its
a joint ULFA+HUJI op.

HUJI I can understand but what does ulfa gain by indiscriminate killings among its potential support base ?
even the psychopaths in LeT and HuM don't do serial bombings in kashmir.

singha ji, could you kindly give us a break up of the areas targetted ?

Rahul you make the mistaken assumption that these terrorists are rational beings who can think in a gain/loss perspective. You are being too generous, they are taking out their anger and frustration on the local population. They want to create panic and destruction and gain publicity. They want to be taken 'seriously' by the establishment.

Link
Denying any intelligence failure behind a series of bomb blasts in Assam on Thursday, Minister of State for Home Shakeel Ahmed said the terror attack could be linked with the communal clashes in the northeastern state this month.

"No, there is no intelligence failure in this case. Even after intelligence reports, intensive policing is needed to avoid such tragedies," said Ahmed, also a spokesman for the Congress party.

"Although we can't say who is behind the blasts, there were communal clashes in different parts of Assam on Oct 3 and Oct 5 in which at least 57 people were killed and 225,000 people had to take refuge in relief camps," he said.

Without naming any organisation, he said: "Such acts of terror are the result of politics of hate that is being spread in different parts of the country."

Conceding that it was difficult at this initial stage to say who were behind the blasts or whether it was an act of people from across the border or from within, the minister said: "Now even those who used to blame others are found to be involved in the acts of terror."

He was referring to the arrest of five people this month, some of whom are said to have been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or its affilates. They were nabbed in connection with bomb blasts in Maharashtra and Gujarat on Sep 29.

At least 30 people were killed in 12 blasts in Assam on Thursday morning.

so the congress is going to do nothing about it, other than
pointing fingers at the BJP and perhaps try to pin it on bodo outfits.

Rahul M, all the areas targeted are major markets or in case of
DC court - full of people all day/major bus stop outside.

VS, are you aware of the goals of ulfa ? if you are then this is somewhat hard to believe.
terrorist organisations that claim to be freedom fighters don't bomb their own people.
bombings are usually very carefully planned propaganda exercises unless the perpetrator is a paki, then of course no reason or logic holds good.

if there really is ulfa hand behind this then it means ISI control of ulfa is complete.

First of all hearfelt condolences to all the innocent souls who are the victims of the blasts today. I dont even have words now a days on how to react to these types of killings. The intelligence agencies have failed and they have failed miserable for sure. I think they dont even have a clue or any idea how to defend their own borders forget about planning attack in other countries. They have made a full circle of India starting from Hyderabad, bangalore, ahmedabad, Delhi, Gawhati and now presumably either in orrisa or Andra pradesh to end the circle. What is the more shocking is that the respected home minister of India even dont have a conscience to resign from the post and nor does sonia or any other top brass have moral conviction that he should be booted out.
For God's sake, these political idiot ar** ho** if they have a shred of IQ know that the terrorists are striking the next generation of India. They are terrorizing them and not us who knows what the terrorism is. And blast near to Chief ministers residence is nothing but mockery of security forces.

one my wife relative got his bike burnt in DC court and his wife
also a lawyer suffered arm injury. they had left car park moments
before blast.

Cong(I) has got the fig lead of "BJP terrorism" to hide behind now.

Absolutely. whatever the minimal sympathies/support that ULFA has among Assamese will be gone as soon as the people come to know that ULFA is involved in these indiscriminate and un-targetted serial bomb blasts. It got to be the hand of HUJI or LeT with or without involvement of ULFA.

Singha,
Involving BJP/sangh outfits by Cong will backfire bigtime. They better not do this if they want to survive as a political outfit next time around.

Was this a car/truck bombing?

Have any more details emerged about the mechanics and logistics of the bombings themselves?

Has anyone claimed responsibility so far? Any emails to tvnews studios? Not even to NDTV?

Have the BD and Paki le(a)pers, oops 'leaders', rushed in with condemnations yet?

Has local law enforcement made any statements? How about state and local politicians?

So what are you trying to say bro?

Hindu fundamentalists are responsible for the blasts in Assam? Two wrongs make one right? Or what?

Based on this update, HUJi is suspected and RDX is used.
61 dead, 470 injured as 13 blasts rock Assam

GUWAHATI: 61 people were killed and about 470 injured in serial blasts in Guwahati and three other districts of Assam as suspected HuJI militants struck terror in the hub of North-East, considered by far the worst attack.

The first of the 13 bombs, suspected to have been planted by Bangladesh-based HuJI members, went off at around 11.30 am under the Ganeshguri flyover near the high-security capital complex housing the assembly building, followed by explosions at Paltan Bazar and Fancy Bazar here. ( Watch )

Around the same time, bombs also went off in crowded market places of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Barpeta districts in lower Assam.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi put the toll at 61 dead and 470 injured. Of the six blasts in Guwahati, RDX was used in two of the explosions, he said adding a special task force was being set up to unearth the conspiracy behind the blasts.

Black smoke billowed from the deputy commissioner's office housing the district courts, which bore the brunt of the attacks in Guwahati, as vehicles, including a number of cars, turned into mangled heaps of metal.

Police suspected that the bomb was planted in the court complex on a two-wheeler.

At least 25 people were killed and 235 injured in the blasts in Guwahati where an indefinite curfew was clamped following protests by residents, who accused the police of delayed action.

While 19 were killed and 64 injured in Kokrajhar, 12 died in Barpeta where 46 others were wounded. Five people were injured in Bongaigaon, principal secretary (home) Subhash Das said.

A red alert has been sounded across the state and army has also been put on alert in view of the security situation, he said after Gogoi held a review meeting with his cabinet colleagues and top officials.

In fact on the contrary I have come to believe that Hindus have been way too tolerant for their own good. Bharat will continue to pay the price for the Hindu indifference/ignorance until the Hindus figure out who they are collectively. Maybe we should learn a lesson or two from Saudi Arabia.

What is going on...We have an absentee government? I guess MMS and Sonia can do us a favour; they can call the election early and get relieved from governing India. This puppet government, whose objective has been fulfilled, of castrating India in a Nuke deal and it does not know now what to do. The puppets have fulfilled their mission and they have not been turned off. MMS is of course sleeping soundly right now (since no RoP follower has been caught yet), Sonia could care less, as no place of worship of her liking has been attacked, Mr. Patil gets to display new sets of cloth (anyone watching TV, did they see the new sets of clothes?)., Paswan and Lalu can now further ask that these terrorist (if they happen from BD), should be given citizenship, at least we can claim that it is then home grown and no foreign power dare attack us. MNS Raj Thackrey can maybe kill some more North Indians and let the illegal BDs stay in Mumbai, after all only that can get him elected in Mumbai and Lalu/Paswan in Bihar!! Congress gets an additional advantage, if the SS-BJP alliance breaks on that. The only few things missing are - The Gujjar agitation (oops I forgot, in spite of congress hard try that got solved), Amarnath agitation (now that also got solved, congress plan backfired). The naxalites have been a little quite.
How many Indians have to die so that chosen few (Rajkumars like Rahul Baba abd Raj Thackrey) should be able to rule India!! How Many?
rgds,
