INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2
Re: INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2
The way secrecy surrounds the program the sub has probably already undergone sea trials. They now have confidence in it and are ready to announce it.
Re: INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2
I remember reading a scenario story a long time ago (by Dileep saar, I think) about the launch of a new sub, and a welcome party waiting in the BoB. Interesting to say the least. Folks who had read it would know what I meansrin wrote:How very obliging of Navy and IT to broadcast this. Now everybody will be trying to get its acoustic signature.

India’s first indigenous nuclear submarine gears up for maiden sea trials | TOI
The next SSBN, S-3 or INS Aridhaman, is also now ready for "launch" into water, while the third called S-4 is at an advanced fabrication stage in the building blocks. Simultaneously, the proposed project to build six SSNs (nuclear-powered attack submarines without ballistic missiles) at Vizag is also being finalized, as earlier reported by TOI.

Parrikar to flag off Arihant sea trials?
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Vis ... 691340.ece
Manohar Parrikar is arriving in the city on Monday on his first visit after taking over as the Defence Minister.
During his short visit, the Defence Minister is scheduled to visit the Indian Navy’s premier operational command the Eastern Naval Command.
He is likely to inspect the indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic submarine INS Arihant that has completed its harbour trials and is set for sea trial.
Recent statement of Admiral R.K. Dhowan that INS Arihant would commence its sea trials ‘soon’ combined with the presence of top officials of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Nuclear Power Corporation in the city has given rise to speculation that the Minister’s visit is to flag off the sea trials. However, Naval sources could not confirm the schedule of the Defence Minister. The project is reportedly monitored directly by the Prime Minister’s Office and the programme is scheduled from New Delhi.
INS Arihant was launched on July 26, 2009 and its onboard 83MW nuclear reactor went critical in August 2013. The submarine has completed the harbour trials and after completing sea trials it would be commissioned into the Indian Navy.
INS Arihant would be the main draw during the International Fleet Review scheduled to be held in Visakhapatnam in February 2016.

Noob Question. Considering the Arihant is similar to the Barracuda / Astute / Virginia Class in Displacement (+/- 1000) has there been any thought out on SOF Mobile Pod/ Dry Deck Shelter /Swimmer Delivery Vehicle Payloads with the Sub?
Re: INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2
The hull with far cleaner lines than the turtleback PLAN Jin class, which should also be far noisier. However, later subs of the class should have double the number of missile silos,as a min. of 8,preferably 12 ICBMs with MIRV warheads should be carried. Russia has just accepted its 3rd. Borei class SSBN,5 more being built with at least 20 ICBM silos, with a new improved SSGN Yasen class in the works, which will be quieter and carry more weaponry than the first 2 subs of the class.
The Arihant class is an SSBN,so it is unlikely that swimmer/special ops pods will be used. Its primary role is second strike for our strat. forces command, the most survivable leg of the triad.

It isnt a second hump but is the contour that is decreasing from the missile bay/hump to the end of the submarine where the propeller would be.
Re: INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2
Finally, a new pic! Well done again to Gagan for the original drawing, which so closely matches the real thing.
It looks like the image was taken from the rear port quadrant, with the sub looking shortened as a result, and providing the illusion of a second hump due to lack of depth perspective of the hull surface within the image . The real thing will have a smoother taper of the hull at the rear, and will be more elongated than it looks in the picture. It 'looks' longer than stated length, but that's just an uneducated guess.

Manohar Parrikar flags off India's nuclear submarine Arihant for sea trials
Last Updated: Monday, December 15, 2014 - 22:27
New Delhi: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar flagged off the first made-in-India nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant from Vizag for sea trials on Monday.
According to the Naval sources, INS Arihant kick-started its maiden sea trial from the Shipbuilding Centre, Visakhapatnam today. Huge preparations were done to ensure a smooth sail out for the 6,000-tonne nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN).
Arihant's sea trial will include the firing of the indigenous Bo5 missile that has a 700-km range and can carry a one tonne nuclear warhead. It can carry 12 such missiles.
Construction of INS Arihant is considered to be a giant stride of India to secure a seaborne nuclear deterrent.
The nuclear submarine will help India achieve the capability of going into high seas without the need to surface the vessel for long durations.
Conventional diesel-electric submarines have to come up on surface at regular intervals for charging the cells of the vessel.
India is the only nation in the Indian Ocean region to have a nuclear submarine and the sixth in the world to have the capability to design and construct a nuclear submarine.
Once the trials are through and the submarine enters service, India will not only complete its nuclear triad of delivering nuclear weapons from land, sea and air, but also join an elite club of six nations that operate nuclear submarines carrying ballistic missiles. The US, Russia, France, Britain and China are the other nations with this capability.
INS Arihant is longer than any of the submarine in the Indian Navy`s fleet so far. A nuclear submarine is powered by a nuclear reactor, which generates tremendous heat driving a steam turbine. It has unlimited underwater endurance and speed twice that of its conventional counterparts.
The INS Arihant's miniaturised nuclear reactor, built with Russian help, had gone critical last year and the vessel has been going through a series of harbour trials since then at Visakhapatnam, where it is being built.
The submarine has also been going through the power-up cycle of its nuclear reactor and has now achieved a nearly 100 percent power level, as per officials.
The vessel, the lead ship of the Arihant-class submarines, was launched in 2009. Its design is based on the Russian Akula-1 class submarines and its 83MW pressurised heavy water reactor has been built with significant Russian assistance.
While its 100-member crew has been trained by Russian specialists, Indian scientists at Mumbai's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre have received significant expertise in reducing the size of the reactor to help it fit into the 10 metre diameter hull of the submarine.
The Indian Navy currently operates the INS Chakra nuclear-powered submarine leased for 10 years from Russia in 2012.
Two other vessels of the Arihant class are also believed to be under construction at Visakhapatnam's state-owned Hindustan Shipyard Limited.

That is not the Arihant but the Borei class. There's only one recent pic of Arihant and that's the grainy one in the last page.

Thanks I was wondering why they were posting such a different picture. The slant at the back of the Borei class is very flat and the conning tower also has an different front end(not vertical)

It does look like the Arihant class packs in a lot for it's size and multirole potential (compare to Akula or Astute which cannot carry ballistic missiles).
Good packaging and admirable for been the first in its type.

btw, you should always rely on TSS for such analysis. here you go!

Re: INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2
actually the Astute is also single hull, bigger and has a ellipse type shape (longer axis is vertical one) which might be able to fit ballistic if desired.
but they have proper vanguard class solution. actually I am surprised they not fit in some uvls with room for say 16 tomahawks since all latest classes like yasen and virginia went that route. they are sticking to firing thawks from torpedo tubes.
the Akula look is misleading...it is double hull all through for massive reserve buoyancy against hull damage....the interior working area of the sub would be similar to Arihant probably. hence the very huge cylindrical look. perhaps the idea was to muscle through ice floes and bump up from below to break into polynas....and the outer hull could be simply and cheaply replaced in repairs without affecting the delicate piping and plumbing within the inner hull.

Re: INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2
Shouldn't P-75I be designed in India incorporating design and technologies from ATV and P-75? Why go for a whole new design from elsewhere at huge costs? There is sufficient submarine design equity now for an indigenous effort on P-75I. As an interim, order more P-75s.

tsarkar explained that the compact size of a modern SSK needs higher level of tech than a 6000t starter kit SSN.

If the submarine pitches nose down either for diving or in heavy seas, even a level rear section will appear like a hump.MANNY K wrote: Are you sure ? It does look like a second hump.
Re: INS Arihant (ATV) News and Discussion -2
The latest Russian attack N-subs have heavy automation and huge reduction in crew size. The reactor's life is that of the sub,no need for any refuelling mid-life.Silent speed of the Yasen class is estimated by the US as 20+ kts, that's top speed for many conventional boats.

With fiberoptic transmission etc being standardized etc why are periscopes etc not "cabled" (rather than rigid)which could allow scopy from a much lower depth and not limited by mast like periscopes etc.technically with a reelable fiberoptic system you could be able to transmit images from considerable depths. If real fine details are needed then prismatic periscopics of course have advantages but in most cases is such clarity required (beyond human retinal two point discrimination)

when its time to lay down massive firepower though nothing beats VL. even some of the later 688I boats were modded to have 8 thawk tubes and the virginia has a lot more. the yasen has some 40 I think a true poster child of russian style overkill.
it is alleged one of the modded Ohios slunk close to libya and unleashed some 150 thawks in a single barrage the opening night of the war. useful for shutting down IADS/runways to permit safer passage for follow on manned a/c sorties.
