17-hour encounter near Srinagar with terrorists
Image
After an encounter that lasted 17 hours, one militant was killed on Tuesday morning but another managed to escape in the Pulwama district of South Kashmir.

The two militants were hiding in a house in a village 60 kilometres from Srinagar. On Monday, the police, assisted by the army, cordoned off the area. The encounter was suspended last night but was resumed on Tuesday morning. :x {still lacks night fighting capability}
This is the second encounter in the area in a week. Two LeT terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed by security forces in Pulwama on Saturday.

Defence Minister AK Antony visits Jammu on Tuesday for a review of the security situation in the state. He is accompanied by the Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor.

Last week, Srinagar saw its worst terrorist attack in three years. Two terrorists stormed Law Chowk in the heart of the city and fought security personnel forces for 22 hours from the top floor of a hotel. Both terrorists were killed; two civilians also died in that encounter and nine others were injured.

On Wednesday last, two terrorists armed with AK 47s and grenades stormed Lal Chowk in the heart of Srinagar. As the police retaliated, the terrorists, allegedly from the Lashkar-e-Taiba, rushed into Hotel Punjab. 600 civilians were evacuated from surrounding areas. The two militants holed themselves up on the top floor of the hotel.

Security forces finally entered the hotel on Thursday morning. Both terrorists were killed. Another two people died in the encounter; nine were injured.

Pakistan up to something big, Army informs Antony
13 Jan 2010, 0656 hrs IST, Masood Hussain, ET Bureau

SRINAGAR: Defence minister A K Antony has asked for ‘intensive operations’ against militants and stepping up of vigilance on the Line of Control to ensure development process in Jammu and Kashmir does not fall prey to militant activities.

Chief minister Omar Abdullah requested Mr Antony to consider more recruitment of the youth from border belts in defence services and using choppers to address the winter isolation of these areas.

During his day-long visit to Jammu, Mr Antony was briefed about the repeated infiltration bids from Pakistan and the status of the counter-insurgency operations. Border Security Forces gave the visiting minister a detailed presentation about the recent bid to infiltrate, using dynamite to destroy the fence on the international border.

Militants who returned after over 40 minutes of firing on BSF positions, according to the presentation, had used cordex wire to blast an IED that destroyed a vast portion of fencing including cobra wire and seven wires of concertina . The incident took place between Pillar Nos. 621 and 627 near Alfa Machail post in Gho Manasan area between Domana and Kanachak sectors.

The Army informed the minister about the ongoing operations against militants. They referred to the encounter in a Pulwama village in which one militant was killed. Reports said another militant who was besieged had actually fled. Reports from Jammu suggested that a senior Army officer in the unified headquarters meeting told the defence minister that “Pakistan is up to something big” and “we need to know what it is” .

“Outside forces inimical to the country are making several attempts to infiltrate borders, therefore, there is need to heighten vigilance,” Mr Antony told the meeting. He complemented J&K Police and security forces for efficiently handling incidents in Lal Chowk, Khrew, Pulwama and Reasi and hoped such incidents would be handled with same efficiency. He informed the meeting that the Army had vacated all hospitals and school buildings in the state.

Mr Antony asked the defence forces to mount pressure on militants to neutralise them at every level. He said the current situation called for intensive operations against militants in the state, and also put an effective mechanism in place along the LoC and international border to check infiltration.

^^ It does feel like the Pakistanis are trying something

Last Month there were continous attempts to infiltrate via the Kutch and the gunfights with the BSF and then this.

Also yesterday (13th Jan 10) 7 Pakistani Nationals were arrested by the BSF
7 Pakistani nationals arrested from Sir Creek

The Water Wing of the Border Security Force (BSF) arrested seven Pakistani nationals from the Sir Creek area in the Arabian Sea off Kutch on Wednesday. The arrested are likely to be taken to the BSF Koteshwar base for interrogation.

According to reports, the 131 battalion of the BSF spotted the intruders during a routine patrol in the early hours of the day. When questioned, they said they had come from Pakistan.

They are likely to face a joint interrogation by the local police, Navy, Coast Guard, BSF and the Intelligence Bureau.

Either that or the infiltration was always happening, but only now we are able to intercept them. A possible result of hightened focus after Mumbai Attack?

IIRC, its just that after 26/11, even the forces have got more media savvy and "leak" all the conversations they intercept and visuals along the LoC to the media. It is ensured that every small tit-bit is made known to the media to the junta at large.

Perhaps you are right, its just that i dont remember attempts being reported in the press which included firing for hours on end engaging the BSF in the waters from boats, if you remember there were more teams being trained along with the team which attacked on 26/11. The Navy and coast guards along with other agencies were on high alert status for a couple of months looking for possible inflitartors along the western coast

Terrorist who planned Akshardham attack shot dead

Jammu: The brain behind Akshardham Temple attack and top Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorist was shot dead by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

Abu Dawood, who was reportedly a JeM divisional commander, was gunned down after a fierce gunbattle by security forces in Poonch district's Mendhar area on of Jammu and Kashmir.

Police claim that Dawood was one of the strategic planners in the Akshardham and Ayodhya terror attacks.

"Security forces have killed Akshardham Temple attack strategist. Abu Dawood was one of the main suspects behind the attack. There was no collateral damage as it was a well-planned encounter. He was brain behind a large number of terrorist activities in the region. He was involved in Ayodhya attack as well as involved in the 2008 Batidhar encounter in Jammu," said Jammu DIG SD Jambwal.

He was operating in the region for the last 8-10 years.

Two heavily armed terrorists had attacked the Akshardham Temple in Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar on September 24, 2002.

At least 33 people including two security personnel were killed and over 81 injured in the attack.

Well , this is much better than him being caught and then given royal treatment in Our Jails as a high profile prisoner and a death sentence which would never have been carried out

Pak troops violate ceasefire again, 2nd in 24 hrs
JAMMU: In yet another ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC) and the second in 24 hours, Pakistani troops on Tuesday fired light and medium machine guns at an Indian border post in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
There was cross-border firing from LMGs and MMGs on the Sabzian Forward Defence Location along the LoC this afternoon, a senior army officer of the 16 Corps told PTI. However, there were no casualties or injuries to anyone on the Indian side.
Firing was going on intermittently from the Pakistan side and troops guarding the border have retaliated, the officer said

Maoists target SOG men; four civilians killed BHUBANESWAR/KORAPUT: The Left wing radicals left a trail of terror in South Orissa where they launched attacks at several places killing four civilians on Saturday, a day after heads of three Maoist-affected States met in Raipur. They also went on the rampage destroying public properties.
A few kilometres away from the strife-torn Narayanpatna, a private passenger vehicle, carrying 10 Special Operations Group (SOG) jawans, was targeted. Four locals, including the driver, were killed in a landmine blast triggered by a remote-controlled device.
Though the jawans had a miraculous escape, eight of them sustained injuries. The Commander jeep, in which they were travelling, was mangled under the impact of the blast which occurred at about 7.40 am.
The securitymen had boarded the vehicle at Narayanpatna and were heading for Laxmipur when suspected Maoists carried out the attack.
Two women, the owner of the Commander jeep and the driver, all of whom seated in the front row, were killed. The SOG personnel, who were in the rear rows, luckily escaped with injuries.
“It was an act of frustration by the extremists who are now looking for soft targets. We have sent more units of SOG and CRPF to the area,” IG, Operations, Sanjib Marik, said.
Only two days ago, the CPI(Maoist) had given a call for an economic blockade in the State on January 25 and Orissa bandh on the Republic Day protesting against the arrest of Subhashree Das, wife of top Maoist Sabyasachi Panda. The Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee of the outfit is suspected to be behind this attack.
The incident, which occurred at Palur, about 12 km from Narayanpatna, has now seen three such ghastly incidents in the last seven months. In June last year, a unit of the Orissa Special Strike Force was targeted and nine men had fallen victim. A few months later, a CRPF convoy was attacked at the same spot.
However, it was not known why the SOG men, all in their fatigues, had chosen to travel in a private vehicle as their movement was clearly known to the Red rebels, which was evident from the attack planned with a precision.
However, it was not Narayanpatna alone where the Maoists struck.
A few hours earlier, the tehsil office was burnt down and a BSNL mobile phone tower was blasted at Machhkund by the radicals.
The Govindpalli-Malkangiri and Lamtaput-Machhkund roads were blocked by felled trees.

Terrorists slip away after 15 hour encounter

The article doesn't mention if the terrorists escaped under the cover of darkness though it alludes to the possibility that they didn't. Either ways, it is bad news. If the escape was made at night in a house completely surrounded by troops it means night fighting is still an issue in areas where the need has been most acutely felt for more than a decade.

How they could have managed to escape in daylight with the area saturated by security forces beats me.

Pakistanis have understood that attacking Indian Metropolitan can strike a war. So, they have now decided to destroy Kashmir.
I say we still have time to teach them a lesson. Its still time for an airstrike, that is, IF (and a big if) MMS isnt too scared of worrying US.

EDIT : Meanwhile, NDTV says people in the area claim that the encounter was staged as no militant's body was found. I too find it hard to believe the terrorists could have gotten away from the Army. If it was staged, what could have been a strategic purpose?

Small nitpick. Army was not part of the operation. The operation was conducted by CRPF and J&K Police.

Possibly, a top pig was held/killed and the info is not be leaked out to help in mounting future deception operations using his name? Hence, the pigs escaped story. IMHO of course.

NO DISRESPECT MEANT BUT SORRY THIS CALLS FOR :rotfl: If only he'd pay more attention in Training on how to operate a weapon SAFELY!!!
But on a side note impressed, the Mumbai cops are being prepared to be on their feet with all the mock drills and what not
Cop shoots self during mock drill
MUMBAI: A railway police constable accidentally shot himself during a mock drill against terror on Tuesday. Constable Chandrakant Kadam, of the Government Railway Police (GRP), shot himself while trying to load his revolver at the ticket reservation counter at CST.

The bullet struck Kadam near the navel and his counterparts immediately rushed the profusely bleeding constable to Bombay Hospital, Marine Lines, where he is recuperating. Officials later said that Kadam’s condition was stable. Kadam shot himself at around 1.15 pm while loading his 0.38 bore revolver.

The accident occurred during a two-day anti-terror drill to mobilise security forces and test their level of preparedness. The drill, organised by the GRP and which included other security agencies, will continue on Wednesday.

Not surprising. GRP constables are among the most unprofessional looking folks in (scruffy) uniforms I have ever seen. Even more than the local 'pandu', these guys earn their daily bread by giving passengers a shake down. Sure, you can say "do you know what these guys earn?" but putting a loaded weapon in their hands makes them more dangerous to passengers than to the bad guys. But still, nice to see that the first line of defence is going through drills.

Three militants killed in encounter in J&K
Three Harkat-ul-Jehadi militants were killed in a gunbattle with troops in Kishtwar district early on Thursday.

Acting on a tip off that a group of four militants were hiding in Chicha forest area of the district, 260 kms from here, troops of Rashtriya Rifle launched a search and cordon operation in the area, official sources said.

Militants opened fire on the search party and in the ensuing gunbattle between the two sides, the three militants were killed.

Not related to India, but...

Here’s what not to measure in a COIN campaign

http://ricks.foreignpolicy.com/posts/20 ... n_campaign

"Body count." As he says, when you have 100 enemy and kill 20 of them, you may wind up with 120 live enemies, because you just created 40 more. It's more algebra than arithmetic. ‘Nuff said? Sure, but as Sean Naylor's excellent reporting in Army Times lately has shown, there are still some Army commanders who disagree with this basic point.

"Military accessibility." Yes! One of my many peeves in Iraq was when a battalion or brigade commander would say that a route was "green" because his up-armored Humvees generally could use it without getting blown up. That may have been true, but it also was irrelevant to the security experience of the average Iraqi on the street. When I asked about that, he just didn't seem to know, or care. So I was pleased to see this high up on Kilcullen's list of don'ts. His point is a bit different from that here. It is just because you don't get hit on a road doesn't mean it is under your control. Rather, it may just mean that the enemy doesn't care to engage you there. This may be because it lacks support there, or conversely because it doesn't want to fight in an area where it is popular. Why risk blowing up your own peeps?

"SIGACTs, especially those involving violence against the coalition." This is a related point. Be wary of SIGACTs trends. Violence may be low in an area simply because it is in the uncontested control of the enemy.

"Dialog with the enemy." An interesting point, because there has been so much talk lately about various parties talking to the Taliban. In our tradition, we stop talking to the enemy when the fighting starts. Not so the Afghans, Kilcullen notes. Also, he adds, "the mere fact that our local partners are in dialog with the enemy is not an indicator, in and of itself, of disloyalty to the government."

"Any input metric." Megadittoes. This was another thing that used to drive me nuts in Iraq, listening to Americans boast about money spent, projects initiated, patrols conducted, and such. "These indicators tell us what we are doing, but not the effect we are having." Rather, he advocates, look at outcomes, and especially the effect on the population. How to measure those will be the subject of our next installment on this insightful essay.

Terrible news coming in of an encounter in J&K
Militants trap and kill Army Captain in ongoing encounter
A young Army Captain and a jawan have been killed by terrorists in an encounter that has been on since early Tuesday morning in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir.

The bodies of the two Army men are still with the terrorists, believed to be led by a senior Lashkar e Taiba commander. Two other jawans have been seriously wounded.

The gun battle began at about 5:30 am on Tuesday. The police and the Army learnt about two militants hiding in a house in Sopore. They launched a joint operation.

The Army Captain led a party of the Special Forces [ NDTV says 1 Para SF]to get closer to the house, only to be met by a rain of grenades. The jawan was killed, several troops were injured and the Captain was overpowered by militants and whisked away inside the house.

When a fellow officer called on the Captain's phone to offer safe passage for his release, the militants said: "We are ready to get killed. We've killed your Captain." They also refused to release the Captain's body.

It is believed that between four and six militants are hiding in three houses and firing at the forces.

Sources say two militants escaped after the initial shootout and one is believed killed, though there is no confirmation.

Shudder to think of the last few moments of the SF officer. RIP, sir.

Hope the pigs are hunted down ruthlessly ( the escaped ones).

Was a important turd held up there? Why else would be the SF be sent across if they were some ordinary Abduls?

The Special forces were spotted while they made their advance and were attacked. Sad news but from what is reported it sounds like a tactical failure by the Special Forces.
Also, the news report says that 2 terrorists escaped ? Does that mean the 1st Para were the first units to reach the house and were then attacked before they set up a cordon around the area or were the terrorists able to penetrate the cordon and escape ? The most disappointing thing that I heard in the article was the offer for "safe passage" that was extended for these terrorists after they had killed a Special Forces officer and a jawan and injured many others merely for the body of the officer. How can they even imagine giving safe passage to these terrorists after all the soldiers they've killed and injured ? Getting back a body is hardly reason enough to let terrorists walk.

Hope the pigs are hunted down ruthlessly ( the escaped ones).

Was a important turd held up there? Why else would be the SF be sent across if they were some ordinary Abduls?
Sumji, yes there were atleast 3 top commanders and all from different organisations. RIP Captain Devender Singh and the other jawans.

Full report on the Sopore encounter
An Army officer and two jawans were killed during an 18-hour gun-battle, which saw the elimination of five terrorists of Pakistan-based terror outfits in Sopore district of North Kashmir.

The gun battle began on Monday night when security forces got information about the presence of Lashkar-e-Tayiba , Hizbul Mujahideen [ Images ] and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen terrorists in Chinkipura, a heavily congested area of the Sopore town, official sources said.

The killed armymen have been identified as Captain Devinder Singh Jass, Naik Selva Kumar and Paratrooper Imtiyaz Ahmad Thokar of first Para.

However, a report from Bhopal quoting Army Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor said the slain officer was a Major.

A resident of Shopian in South Kashmir, Imtiyaz is the second armyman killed while fighting terrorists. In March last year, Paratrooper Shabbir Malik was killed fighting terrorists in Hafruda forests of Kupwara.

The terrorists suspected to have been killed include Bhasharat of Hizbul Mujahideen and Noman and Hamza of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, Sallahuddin of Lashker-e-Tayiba and a local terrorist Tauseef Mir, the sources said.

Located 54-kilometeres from Srinagar , Sopore turned into a virtual fortress with police, army and paramilitary men marching into the area.

The terrorists, in their last ditch attempt to escape, blew up the two houses, which were being used by them to fire at security forces since 0230 hours on Tuesday morning. The security forces had cordoned off the area.

Report said security forces came under heavy fire from terrorists who hurled dozens of grenades as Special Forces of the Army approached and laid a siege of the area based on specific intelligence input.

Senior police officials were camping in the area and had been busy evacuating the locals from the locality so that a final onslaught could be launched. The Army had set up a multi-layer security ring around the Sopore town to prevent terrorists' attempt to escape.

However, Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Kashmir) range, AQ Manhas confirmed that fresh firing exchanges had broken out between the terrorists and the surrounding security forces.

"The terrorists are now firing from an adjacent house after the two houses where they were hiding during day time were razed," Manhas said.

Tuesday's encounter has dispelled the myth that the terrorists were operating independently, officials said, adding that the presence of top brass of all the terror groups was an indication that the Inter Services Inteliigence has managed to bring them on a single platform.

This is the fourth major encounter in last one month in Sopore after it was declared as a separate police division. The terror groups Lashkar and Harkat led by Abdullah Uni and Basharat in this region have some active support of overground workers as the area has a domination of Jamaat-e-Islami workers who are associated with pro-Pakistan separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani [ Images ], officials said.

The town earlier saw terrorists digging a road and planting an improvised explosive device inside a water supply line. This was followed by gunning down of four CRPF personnel in Watlab Bandipore area on the outskirts of Sopore.

There had been a pattern in targeted killing of police officials in the area in which information to terrorists is suspected to have been provided by the local overground workers of the terror groups, the officials said.

Erm, thats what they did:

http://dailyexcelsior.com/
....As the security forces suffered high casualties, they decided to launch a heavy assault using mortars on the houses where the militants were hiding. One of the houses was razed to ground at around 4.00 p.m while the second one was also destroyed a couple of hours later, the sources said.

The security forces were sifting through the debris of the houses to trace out the bodies of the militants and their weapons till reports last came in, the sources said adding the search operation is likely to continue tomorrow also.....

Pride in the midst of grief: Sopore Encounter
Parents of Captain Devinder Singh Jassare are proud of the 26-year-old Army officer who was killed in a fierce encounter with Lashkar terrorists in Sopore on Tuesday.

Just two days before he died, he had shot down five militants in Sopore. Captain Singh chose to enlist in the Army in December 2007, instead of a cushy career in the corporate world.

"I received a call from Srinagar that this has happened. All we can say is that we have lost everything. We have a daughter and a son but son is not there now. Our daughter is older and the son was younger. He was 26 years old. What can we say? We read that the encounter has ended now, in which two other soldiers have also lost their lives," said Bhupinder Singh, Captain Devinder Singh's father.

Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir virtually trapped an elite special forces team and whisked away an Army Captain before killing him in Sopore on Tuesday.

In an encounter that ended after nearly 15 hours of fierce gunbattle, two Army jawans and five terrorists were also killed. Apart from Captain Devinder Singh Jass, the other Armymen killed are Naik Selva Kumar and Paratrooper Imtiyaz Ahmad Thokar of 1 PARA. Paratrooper Imtiyaz belongs to the Shupiyan district of Kashmir.

The gun battle began at about 5:30 am on Tuesday. The police and the Army learnt about the militants hiding in a house and launched a joint operation. The militants, however, were well-prepared for an assault. The Army Captain led his team close to the house, only to be met by a rain of grenades. A jawan was killed and several troops were injured and the Captain was overpowered by militants and taken away into the house.

When a fellow officer called on the Captain's phone to offer safe passage for his release, the militants said: "We are ready to get killed. We've killed your Captain." They also refused to release the Captain's body. It is believed that between four and six militants were hiding in three houses and firing at the forces. Sources say two militants had escaped after the initial shootout. The forces denied that there was ever a hostage situation saying the Army Captain had been killed immediately after he was taken captive by the militants. The officer killed belonged to Ghaziabad. The jawans were from Pulwama and Thanjavur. All thee were from 1 Para SF.

Nope sir....I give up....too much armchair tactical gyaan to deal with..like you said..double sigh!!!

That apart, what these operations (in Sopore recently) highlight is the level of "actionable" intelligence that the security forces seem to have build up. Some time back we heard one of top officers of a CPO talk about presence of X number of militants and how they were aware of their movement and names. The depth of network (humint+sigint) the security forces have developed is pretty amazing. And too in a town which is considered a seperatist stronghold. The fact that SF Team was available is an indicator that SF troops may be camping in the general area to deal with hieghtened situation and eliminate the pigs.Of course, their CQB skills will be much desired in such cases.

Added later: The information about the brave Captain having pestisized 5 piglets only couple of days back supports my above assertion. These piglets are getting slaughtered on a mas scale....

As for the loss of life of the brave officer, it is sad but it examplifies that some lives do hold more value and meaning in the scheme of things in this universe than others.....may god almighty bless his soul and give strength to his family.....

Omar Abdullah, on NDTV, made a point that the piglets seem to be of higher quality in certain places. He mentioned that the killed officer was not a run-of-the-mill jawan but a SF and if he was overpowered, the pigs are not ordinary ones.

Only thing refreshing was that a CM knew about SF/jawan etc when most netas cant distinguish a army officer from a IAF officer.

sum, while the SF guys are cut above the rest...lets not ascribe rambosque qualities to them.....the news article mentions extensive use of hand grenades by piglets....it is very likely that the brave officer was injured in the ambush and was not in position to help himself...let us wait for more details....no point speculating...

May the Shaeeds RIP. Our special forces/paramilitary fighting insurgants and Maoists now need better weapons like the SMAW NE Explosive Rocket. Here's the You tube demo.

By the way, none of the soldiers in the pics posted above seem to be either rushing or taking positions, seem to be on a leisurely walk most of them !!
