Libyan War
Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
'cause he would 've perhaps kudha hafiz-ed his army!
Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
he is in tripoli. appeared in a function yesterday.
there are no western reporters embedded with qadhafi forces , because they do not want to be hit by nato air attacks. some pics were clicked with permission in contested towns. a mix of "black african" and "arab" faces. far better equipped , dressed and disciplined looking than the rabble er rebels .

Errr if NATO is only enforcing a no fly zone then why are they bombing Gadafi's tanks and Army? also bombing is airbases on the ground too?jimmyray wrote:AFP reports that NATO intercepted a rebel MiG-23 as it tried to take off from Benghazi and there are also some reports that a rebel helicopter gunship was flying near the frontlines near Ajdabiya.
NATO forces Libyan rebel's fighter jet to land
NATO intercepts rebel fighter
NATO said it was investigating the report on the helicopter. Its warplanes intercepted a MiG-23 fighter jet flown near Benghazi by a rebel pilot on Saturday and forced him to land after he violated a UN-mandated no-fly zone, an official at the alliance told AFP later
Isn't this a clear violation of the No fly zone, Does NATO apart from Public Justification care about what the UN resolution states?
Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
you know the answer. they could bomb a guy taking a crap in the desert 100 miles from the nearest human and claim his discharged of WMD was threatening the civilian pop.

Perhaps Gaddafi has developed secret weapons- tanks with wings- and NATO wants to bomb them before they "take off" into the sky. On a serious note, flying tanks as a concept isn't as bizzare as it sounds. The Soviet's pioneered research in this field before the Second World War. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_tank

i dread to think what happens to those pick up trucks when the rocket pods are let off...
the footage of grads etc., are staggering enough, and those are purpose built platforms

Arming the rebels is bad for us. Most of the rebels are actually AQ members right out of afpak region.. perhaps a right time for us to correct somethings near home if necessary.
So, these air strikes are good for us.

Gaddafi accused of using cluster bombs
Fighting is raging in the long-besieged rebel-held Libyan city of Misrata where a human rights group claims the Libyan army was using banned cluster bombs.
The US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) said its researchers reported the use of cluster bomb munitions against Misrata.
The weapons are banned by more than 100 countries across the world. Neither the United States or Libya are signatories to the international Cluster Munitions Convention, which bans the use of cluster bombs.

check this page and newer page for last week photos.
seems to be plenty of loyalists in misrauta unlike what is portrayed by media. there is a pic of a bunch of people celebrating atop a tank captured from the rebels.
the Touaregs of the eternal sands and Chadian tribes are still with the great leader it seems!
UK-France have no resources to pursue this further and are busy begging to get the US back into the fight - oops

glad to see the 'old man' is still alive and calling family on cellphone. the poor guy has been through a lot and deserves some rest and peace.

"Less than a month into the Libyan conflict, NATO is running short of precision bombs, highlighting the limitations of Britain, France and other European countries in sustaining even a relatively small military action over an extended period of time, according to senior NATO and U.S. officials."

If we are looking supply chain and strategic support, these are not the guys to be partnering with.

as usual, supine on their backs, waving paws in air and begging for free biscuits from sher khan's ample stocks.
good that these frauds have been exposed.
good that these frauds have been exposed.
Libya “has not been a very big war. If [the Europeans] would run out of these munitions this early in such a small operation, you have to wonder what kind of war they were planning on fighting,” said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, a defense think tank. “Maybe they were just planning on using their air force for air shows.”
Despite U.S. badgering, European allies have been slow in some cases to modify their planes and other weapons systems so they can accommodate U.S. bombs. Retooling these fighter jets so that they are compatible with U.S. systems requires money, and all European militaries have faced significant cuts in recent years.
Typically, the British and French militaries buy munitions in batches and stockpile them. When arsenals start to run low, factories must be retooled and production lines restarted to replace the diminished stock, all of which can take time and additional money, said Elizabeth Quintana, an aerospace analyst at the Royal United Service Institute in London.
Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
the evolving plan of action seems to be play up Misrata as a place where gross HR abuses are taking place, poison gas, perfume shaped bombs to kill curious kids, cluster bombs....
then the embarked MEU off Libya lands directly near Misrata under aircover of USS Enterprise and forces bulk of libyan army encamped in the vicinity into battle..it sallies forth toward tripoli along the coast, forcing libyan army units out of hiding if they want to stop the march, once exposed air assets of all hues to pound them.
once the coast is gone, gadhafi has no hope unless he wants to play omar mukhtar, rally the sahara tribes and run around being a guerilla...they'd have happy to leave him alone ruling over the unpopulated , unproductive saharan interior in a rump pakjab kind of thing, while grabbing the coast and oil for the rebellion.

Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
it has to be US Marine MEU or nothing. the UK/France are 3rd rate powers in terms of marine and ground forces - no resources, no money and no stomach for that kind of work. Turkey, South korea, Pakistan strike me as middle powers who are much better organized for that kind of thing - with some logistical support from US.
Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
Those rockets pods the are ones used on Soviet Mig-21/23/27 series of aircraft......really funny of them to jig them up on SUVs and hope to achieve anything....
Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
two days of no airstrikes due to bad weather and lack of planes perhaps.
result: rebels again in full retreat from ajdabiya back to benghazi.

rebel arms workshop showing rocket launchers being made. I guess their level of tooling makes rocket launchers the only thing suitable for quick manufacture. 105mm types need precision manufacture, forging, stamping, trained crew and are out of question.
so I guess the preponderance of rockets vs artillery is a compulsion not a deliberate choice. the boys are doing what they can.
would be interesting to study what the israelis did in defending jerusalem in the desperate days of the first arab-israel war when only france was supplying some arms and rest had to be managed from old stuff and workshops.

Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
All these supplies and logistics have put the Eu planes not that attractive for us.. however, it fails anyone's logic that it is not the capability of technology that is important, but production, product support and spares management, and operational logistics more important and plays vital role for many ops.
Bottom line, NATO is screwed without khan support, and that is qed here. Send that high power committee to make an India specific agreement on those special documents that we are always scared off to sign.

Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
GD, Read the book Exodus by Leon Uris for a description of those days. I think they made a 2" mortar in the camps.
Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
I read exodus long back. did read of some hellacious mines and a large caliber SR-mortar they came up with
the entire refuelers of a single EU 'power' could be needed to mount one of these global pawa strikes from south dakota to libya and back
http://www.keloland.com/videoarchive/?V ... =033011b1b
each probably dropped around 80-100 JDAMs from 40,000ft on concentrated targets like a south libya airbase and flew back.

Re: LIBYA : No fly zone/air war thread
This needs to be a Indo-Israeli research attempt. Most conventional studies of the Kibbutz system in Israel only focus on the social and psychological aspects of inmates, often to project a negative image of the system. The role played by the Kibbutz in developing the Israeli MIC and its Defense production system is not highlighted. Indians can benefit from this study as it would show how such know-how is disseminated in the tech centres.Singha wrote: would be interesting to study what the israelis did in defending jerusalem in the desperate days of the first arab-israel war when only france was supplying some arms and rest had to be managed from old stuff and workshops.

NATO sends requests for predators.
Now this makes things interesting for us to look at UAH (helos) for mountain warfare - remote operated vehicle that houses couple of 30mms, precision strikes, ATGMs with no men behind and all stealth.
