I was looking at the photographs of the C130Js.
Seems that 3 of them have refuelling pods and other 3 do not. seems funny that (a) we go in for a new system type and take in the complexity of spares, maintainance for only 6 aircraft and (b) within 6 we have two different configs.
is this accurate (3+3)? why not just have 1 type (i understand mission dynamics etc, but 3 it is)?

^^^ AFAIK the refueling boom is removable.... so all a/c may have this capability to add or remove the boom as per requirement.
