Probably the pic was taken at the moment when the lead rows turn right to look at the guests of honour... The chaps on the back rows don't seem to be goose-stepping...

When I was in NCC decades ago, the boots that we were given also had those iron horseshoes on their soles, good for march pasts as you can kick into the ground without harming the shoe soles

It's normal to have "horseshoes" in drill boots. Else you eat away your shoe sole quite fast.

Fair enough. I am guessing that I will be in a minority here if I say that goose stepping and high-knee jogging like Iraqi troops are both fine with me and do not evoke any in me shock, shame or embarrassment which would make me do a facepalm.

it just looks terrifically weird.

why do they need these funny drills??

take a look at the IA contingents. smart, synchronized and formidable.

never liked the BSF funny formations on bikes (appears circus like) or this.

republic day marching contingents have to have gravitas.

++1 Shiv

But only showstoppers I find are those segments showcasing different states/ministries/schools. If you are anywhere the main dais, then expect your ear drums to explode as they stop right in front of you (to perform some dance) with volume turned to max. Not a pleasant experience at all.

Only those portions needs to be polished and refined. Military is just fine.

P.S. DR display at the end has always been my favorite. Strangely we are always conscious of what others are thinking about us.

I had originally posted the image and commented on its in-appropriateness.

My point was that it was viewed both negative( think nazis and totalitarian regimes) and weird (think NK) in west, and therefore didn't look like something we want to present to US Pres.
Associations are made naturally to previous actions and these associations can be universal. Colonial hangover has nothing to do with it.

If I am correct, goose-stepping is not a tradition in India and more like a recent adoption.

Since goose-stepping is unnatural and physically difficult to do for a longer time in military parades, marchers begin goose-stepping as they approach the review stand.

Chinese mil march. regular march to goose stepping at 4.17 - 4.20

How do they sanitize that none of the parade participants have loaded weapons compared to blank ones? This must be heck of a job more so because of US President is present. Every guns and other weapon systems must be fully sanitized ---

^^ @ Prithwiraj,

LOL.. (This must be heck of a job more so because of US President is present. Every guns and other weapon systems must be fully sanitized) why do you think its less of a job if US of A president was not there ? (why do you suspect that because of US of A extra sanitation of our OWN armed forces is required?)

Do you doubt our own Armd forces ? if you dont why would you ask such a question?

One has to understand how Arms are stored, issued and kept in Armed forces to not to ask such questions.

Before having such doubtful questions try and read how a professional Army stores, issues and keep its ARMS ? (one might learn more about logistics best practices, than one is exposed to in corporate/ internet world)

After the assassination of Eqypt's Anwar Sadat at a military parade - guns at military parades are either ceremonial or guns with no ammo and disabled (no firing pins)

same with weapon systems - tanks, missile....

there was a rumor the secret service made the USMC remove bolts and magazines too from their guns in the inaugural parade.

Well my question was a little misleading as I also felt during drafting it hurriedly. US presidents very rarely be a part of a large military parade. Victory day celebration might be one. Given the protocol need of secret services there can be additional demands. This is not to say that Indian PM is anyway less important than other world leaders. Also it is not to cast aspersion on our soldiers but was more a process and logistic questions

HKumar wrote:2015 RD rehearsal - this one stands out. Wonder who decided to bring out the goose step with leather knee boots with the US Pres as chief guest? Indian marches are quite impressive and the goose step and hezbollah-like march don't gel with the traditional march.

^^^ No sir, it is taken at the time when they would turn their gaze back straight after saluting the Commander-in-chief. The front row makes an exaggerated step to mark this change sharply. At the end of this step all heads swivel back to original positions and the arms of the leader goes back to the side.

Similar situation with NCC boys
Image
and NCC girls

Also, the horse shoes and metal studs are so that the steps create sharp and audible sound.

Anyways, no more squiggly texts from me on this thread.

That "goose stepping" is actually a salute. Just one high step is taken at eyes right.

Check it out at 20:43, 21:28, 22:44, 23:12 etc.
