Good images of the retractable probes in use. The EW bumps indicate these are from the last new build DARIN2 batch of 20 built at HAL, I speculate from the 224 Squadron that converted from MiG-23MF

Notice the mast in the background... seems to be Karwar. That thing must be at least 10 stories taller than Vikramaditya itself.

Did someone not notice the chappals on carrier deck yet? :P not the ones RM is wearing but some other official in the entourage. Hot and humid Karwar is not suitable for shoes.

Supposedly the Indian Army is using ZU-23-2 from enclosed positions for Long Range Suppression Fire along the LOC. better than an HMG ;p

30 MM Ammunition is fired from 30 mm automatic Gun 2A42 mounted on infantry combat vehicle BMP II as the main armament. The gun has double belt feed system, one belt with armour piercing tracer round and the other with both High Explosive Incendiary and HE Tracer rounds generally in ratio of 4:1. JS 221 has these protrusions that (maybe/maybe not) MAWS on the starboard inlet and under each exhaust. No such things on the port inlet

I think the protrusions under the exhausts are chaff/flare dispensers. I am not sure what the protrusion on the starboard inlet it. It appears to be some sort of a handle.

Yes, I noticed those protrusions on each of the engine exhausts just in front of the fins. I think those may be chaff/flare counter measure dispensing system (CMDS).

I see the same protrusion near the exhaust on the MiG 27UPG here:

Hopefully, these are indigenous CMDS provided by DRDO and are externally visible since they were retrofitted as part of an upgrade. I don't see similar devices on the Tejas as it should be integrated within the air frame as part of the design.

Israeli developed, in service for a while, in particular the ones on the MiG-27s at least. We modified the MiGs and MiG didn't throw a fit because I guess they were not selling it anymore. So they let us play around.

See: http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthre ... def900445b
Hi Martinez

No Approval was require from the MIG design bureau. An engineering company may do modification work on any aircraft, provided it can support it by proper analysis. A military customer is not subject to FAA approval as a commercial customer, and may approve the engineering work by itself.

The system includes a controller in the RH fairing, near the dispenser; control unit in the cockpit; firing switch on the throttle; an indicator to the left of the gunsight (forgot what for); and a lot of wiring from cockpit to tail.

To do the installation we had to remove the tail ( which in the MiIGs comes off with the afterburner liner and nozzle), remove canopy & ejection seat for access to the cockpit; remove the gunsight and throttle for rework; removal of the gun pack for access to electrical fuse boxes; removal of the avionics pack behind the cockpit to enable the addition of a sealed connector on thee aft pressure bulkhead ; installation of new and reworked units, and routing the electrical harness to connect all the elements of the system
All this just for CMDS.

We also source chaff and flares from Chemring, UK

Production of conventional flare types also reached record
levels. The first batches of flares for Typhoon were
delivered to all of the participating nations and a number of
significant export contracts are expected shortly. We also
continued to deliver chaff and flares to India as part of a
multi-year contract for protecting the Indian Air Force
Mirage 2000 aircraft. This contract follows on from our
previous programme to supply the Indian Air Force with
flares for its Mig-29 combat aircraft.
http://www.chemring.co.uk/~/media/Files ... ar2007.pdf

BDL developed CMDS which was in trials.

Flares, Chaff were being indigenized - report on BR earlier how IP restrictions were creating a mess with DRDO plans.

^^ That is the Leh flightpath, just under the hillside, where the IAF logo & motto is made of stones and can be seen from far away in the air.

More recently, the Tuskers squadron added their name, and someone carved a zig-zag path up the hill to the logo, completely ruining the aesthetics.

The zig-zag path was a dead giveaway.
