Oh OK. I wonder why though. Won't Barak-1 be cheaper than Barak-8 for anti-missile and self-defence work?Rupak wrote:Merlin, there are no Barak-1 on the Kolkata, all SAMs are Barak-8/LRSAM
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
I wonder why the IN prefers 76 mm main guns and not a larger caliber like 127 mm? Is it due to more rapid firing possible? Or do they think that 76 mm is enough for the roles their principal combatants will be called upon to fulfill?tsarkar wrote:16 Brahmos VLS
48 (2 x 24) LRSAM VLS
4 (2 x 2) HWT TT
4 AK-630
1 OTO-76/62
2 Helicopters with their own weapons.
64 missiles are lesser than Delhi 96 missiles (16 Kh35 + 48 Shitil1 + 32 Barak1), but its sensors on ship & weapons are bleeding edge, enabling way much more with much less.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
an accurate hit with a 76mm can take care of most gun roles these days - pirate skiffs, jehadi dhows, kammandu speedboats, ramshackle huts and godowns - gun accuracy with radar control is now very good. bigger calibres don't add much incrementally for these things in the naval role
for bigger targets there are missiles
for bigger targets there are missiles

Good to see the Naval Dhruvs being used as best as possible by the Navy. Expected nothing less from them, of course. The Navy has always been a proponent of indigenisation even in the face of adversity with home grown development.

Merlin,
Tsarkar may have already made this point before, but it's worth repeating. The P-15A were designed to embark the same 100mm gun as the P-15, and three were ordered. However, product support has been rather poor for the 100mm gun, so the decision was taken to fit this Alphas with a new gun. When the Alphas were at the fitting out stage agreement for production of the 127mm gun had not been concluded. So rather than delay, the Navy went ahead with the 76mm SRGM, which was already in production[LRSAM delays were not expected at this stage]. As for the three Russian guns, well have been put into storage for cannibalization to support the existing three P-15s.

IN674 A MiG-29KUB from INAS 303 "Black Panthers" parked at the Shore-Based Test Facility (SBTF) ski-jump in Goa. The SBTF approximates the flight deck of INS Vikramaditya on land so that Navy pilots can practices launches and traps in relatively safer conditsion before moving on to actual carrier-based ops at sea. The facility is also expected to be instrumental in the development of the HAL N-LCA (Naval Tejas).
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Well then from the left
the Captain Sahib is a certified anti-tank missile operator.
he has completed a minimum number of para jumps and got that golden badge for that. This has nothing to do with the min qual jumps
Don't know the third one.
Has served in J&K and has completed a tour in High Altitude Area

^^^The image is from Passing Out Parade (POP) at one of the academies.
The Captain to left is from Parachute battalions and the missile part shows that he is certified ATGM operator. The left batch above his left chest pocket is the Parachutist Badge of US Army (implying cross training with them). I don't know about the badge next to it.
There is a small badge on his left pocket - that would the one for certain amount of jumps. The two square batches on flap of his left pocket could be COAS and Army Commendation Badge (since two are worn - otherwise, if the same commendation is awarded multiple times the badge carried a star for each commendation with a ceiling of 3 stars per badge).

Thanks Khalsa and Rohit.
Isnt the mystery badge next to the Parachutist Brigade of US Army an Indian Naval Diver badge ?
If I remember correctly Late Major Udai Singh was also wearing one in one of his photos.

It's called Navy Combat Diver Badge - and this is what it looks like:hulaku wrote:<SNIP> Isnt the mystery badge next to the Parachutist Brigade of US Army an Indian Naval Diver badge ?If I remember correctly Late Major Udai Singh was also wearing one in one of his photos.
Combat Diver course is required for MARCOS to undertake; some Para (SF) guys also do it. And hence, you saw the late Major Udai Singh sporting one. But Combat Diver is a specialization required in IN independent of special forces.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
It looks like the IMA. Their POP was on 14th December. That looks like Chetwode Hall or its whereabouts in the right background. As a factoid, 51 Afghan soldiers passed out as Foreign GC's out of a total of 71 foreign GC's.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
So it brings me to the original question. Is Captain Sahib wearing the Navy Combat Diver Badge ?rohitvats wrote:It's called Navy Combat Diver Badge - and this is what it looks like:

The Captain Sahib is wearing the following -
Paratroopers Badge shown by a Parachute
ATGM course completion badge
Service ribbons for J&K and High Altitude Service
2 commendations, one each by the GOC and Vice Chief of Army staff
US Airborne metal badge (sign of a mutual exercise)
The Indian para Jump badge on his left breast pocket telling about a certain number of jumps.
and the badge puzzling everyone is the Russian Airborne metal badge (sign of a mutual jump with those boys)

All this before graduating from IMA? How many years do officers put between NDA and IMA?sameerjoshi wrote:...

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
The Captain in all probability is a senior from the same IMA or NDA squadron of the two Lieuts who have been commissioned or maybe related in some manner to one of the boys but has no official connection with them......Aditya G wrote:All this before graduating from IMA? Which is intriguing because this is not worn by the Russian paratroopers on their uniform. That is an Emblem of the Russian Airborne forces - VDV - and is not worn on the uniform but on the Beret/Peak Cap. This is like sporting Para Regiment badge on uniform.sameerjoshi wrote:<SNIP>
