Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Armed Forces
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Can't explain it in words, but think of it as a menacing message that 'we can go anywhere, surface anywhere, anytime' sort of pic. Sort of the photo ops khan does with his all fighters on deck CVNs.

That might be a ship of the Turkish Navy.arshyam wrote:Added later: a newbie pooch: one of the pics on the link above has INS Aditya next to a frigate (I think) with a pennant number F253. I can't find any references to this pennant anywhere on Wiki's active ships list (current frigates are number between 20-51), nor on the BR Navy page. Is it a decommissioned ship?
Probably this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCG_Zafer_ ... 28F-253.29

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Neither is Klashnikov, but they are still used by RR in J&K.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
I hope these guys get actual firing time on the ranges and are proficient with the weapons. That is #1.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
UP Police SWAT - Good they've got gizmos thanks to Govt Spending that they can pose with after gelling their hair. But they give a whole new meaning to "covert". I could count the entire team there.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
If you look at the whole team, you will see an equal distribution of 8 x INSAS and 8 x Kalashnikov (fixed butt) plus 1 x Kalashnikov (folding butt).anupmisra wrote:Not ideal for close quarter combat, are they?jamwal wrote:Picture of what someone claims to be Aligarh "SWAT"

Here's another picture w/ different arms:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gsLWiHJp-9Y/U ... 4050_n.jpg
5 x MP-5
6 x Kalashnikov (folding butt)
3 x INSAS
1 x Kalashnikov (non- folding butt)
Apparently, this is a 20-man team for district-level operations, and were trained by a former NSG commando who is still in police force.

More like this should be raised in all cities with population of 1 million or more.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
What is "K force" shown in the image on the shoulder of the officer who is receiving the award ?
-Ankit
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
^^^Kilo-Force - part of RR set-up in the Valley which looks after the Kupwara and Baramula region. Equivalent to a division and commanded by a Major General. Would have various RR Sectors under it - each equivalent to a brigade and commanded by a brigadier.

Lets not argue on their weapons and tactics. What is heartening to see is that an effort is being made to establish such a force at district police level. Training will be the key though !!! We also have to understand that it is easier for such forces to procure weapons from other Indian security establishment, rather than getting permission to pick up stuff from outside vendors. This avoids any controversy.....and it certainly looks like the case here....
BTW a Kalashnikov used in trained hands is a fine weapon (not discounting the MP5 for its better CQB characteristics). I personally don't like the INSAS for this role (discounting the sniper version though) due to lesser stopping power and burst capability.......Did someone notice the illumination light add on to one of the AKs.....maybe the laser markers were not available from the pick up sources...
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
INSAS in this group has a night scope made by BEL.

Journal entry from Michael Douglas, crewman aboard the Global Petrol supertanker Atlas en route to the Port of Mumbai. Port of Departure: Valdez, Alaska USA. January 6th, 2256.
We saw them today. At around noon off the port side bow. Two great shapes rising and falling through the waves. Great streams of water jetting out from their “heads” as they breached the surface and sank below again. The Atlas's hull cameras confirmed that they were indeed the Marut class drones we were promised as our escort.
Fearsome looking things. Images of Moby Dick are all I can think about when I see them. Even Captain Ahab wouldn't dare cross one of these. Though I am relieved that they'll be our escort across the Pacific, part of me still has a hard time accepting the fact that they are fully armed and fully autonomous. Aside from their orders and parameters they act on their own accord!
It's also a wonder that these two that are escorting us are part of the Indian Navy. What happened to American might?
The world is pretty backwards right now. America is a third rate country, the global energy crisis is only getting worse, pirates steal oil on the open water with impunity, and I'm currently being escorted by two artificial attack whales from India! Maybe I should hop off on one those tiny islands we'll be passing. Build myself a shack and let the world pass me by. Sounds kinda nice.

Marut class maritime assault drone.
The largest drones constructed, Marut class drones represent the pinnacle of organic drone design. Modeled after the largest toothed predators on the planet, the Sperm Whale, they act as formidable guardians of the sea. The body is composed of thousands of kilometers of artificial muscle fibers layered on top of a sturdy skeletal structure. The onboard AI supercomputer is housed deep in the midsection of the body, while power supplies are spread throughout. A small missile array is located behind the upper headpiece. Torpedo tubes and a large naval ram are located on the front of the head.

^^ [EDITED] That's right, it's the Vagli, arriving at Mamallapuram.
INS Vagli reaches Mamallapuram
INS Vagli reaches Mamallapuram
Visitors to Mamallapuram, the historic coastal town 60 km from Chennai, have had a new sight to behold over the past few days, in addition to the world famous shore temple: the decommissioned submarine INS Vagli that is being prepared to be mounted on a specially constructed stage on the southern side of the temple.
Over the next few days, the project will gather pace. The submarine will be mounted on the platform using air balloons that will slowly heave the vessel on to a makeshift track and set it up 200 metres from the shore. Work will then begin to make it a permanent exhibition, showcasing the State’s maritime history, starting from the Sangam Era.
The submarine arrived at the tourist town from Chennai last Sunday. However, weather conditions prevented the shifting of the submarine from the sea to the stage. It was docked in Chennai for nearly 13 months, awaiting CRZ clearance, after the Tamil Nadu government requested for the vessel to set up the museum.
The Vela-class diesel-electric submarine was decommissioned in December 2010 after it served the Navy for 36 years. It was transported from Visakhapatnam to Chennai in March 2013.
Visakhapatnam is the first city in the country to have a similar facility, where INS Kurusura has been converted into a submarine museum. However, the Tamil Nadu government hopes to make INS Vagli a different exhibit that showcases the naval history of the State. Mamallapuram itself is an ancient port city. Once berthed on the platform, the submarine will be converted into a museum by removing certain items and providing air-conditioning, ventilation and lighting before installing models of warship and others items in the vessel.
