Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
Well, things have changed enough for them to sell something.
Now sit down and figure out what could have changed.
More than the planes it is just the change that matters.
It will get more interesting.

Useless purchase ?? Who would trust some ancient Russian relic over Japanese quality ? Even the German's can't compete with the Japanese on mechanical reliability.Bheeshma wrote:I fail to see the point of this useless purchase. India cannot trust someone whose entire defence lies in depending on US. India will not interfere in Japan-China spat. Be-200 would probably come cheaper and without any strings. At best there will be some info shared on chinese ships and subs.
This is perhaps one of the most significant purchases India has made this year! The fact that Japan would be willing to sell India these planes is a significant development in bilateral relations and the fact that the Japanese would find a loophole to do so is another sign of the Japanese recognition of the China threat and their willingness to adapt and counter that threat (change is not something the Japanese excel at).
Interference can be on many levels and while India might not go to war and bring to bear its nuclear arsenal in defense of Japanese territory, India most certainly has a significant interest in seeing that there is no conflict between China and Japan both strategically and economically.

US is treaty bound to help Japan in a scenario where Japan is attacked by a third country
Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
japan is a good partner in the maritime surveillance, ASW and LRMP game....its their bread n butter role for decades now. they could pass us ELINT and noise data on PLAN units gathered for a long time.
more than these planes be interesting to see if we collaborate on shipbuilding and slurp slurp "Soryu MKI"
japanese/Soko tech and management methods could finally pull up our shipyards just as it did our automobile sector - imagine the days of HM and Fiat production volume and build quality.

The Japanese Shin Maywa seaplane is a good proven design that has been upgraded IMO to be the best in its class in the world. Incidentally the Shin Maywa (spelt as Shin Meiwa) can be found in my 1962 edition Observer's Book of Aircraft.
Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
Japanese law is okay (bit rich for a country that lives under US military umbrella, but let's assume that it is an unbendable constraint), but I hope there are good loopholes in the agreement (a nudge-nudge wink-wink escape clause).
For instance, I hope India has nowhere committed to not weaponising it.
US-2 looks like a good airplane, and if we have operational flexibility, may be used as cargo to supply remote posts in A&N and Lakshadweep, or for navy patrol, or even for special ops (you can get troops in even with airport not being in friendly hands - slight twist on Op Cactus).

You know, I believe the IAF has huge peacetime logistic roles and these are the roles that wil be fulfilled by the likes of C 17 and Shin Maywasrin wrote:

In fact the ratio of time spent in conflict roles and peactime roles might be 1:100 so will still get lots of use.shiv wrote:You know, I believe the IAF has huge peacetime logistic roles and these are the roles that wil be fulfilled by the likes of C 17 and Shin Maywasrin wrote:

India’s Bharat wins more work on Boeing Super Hornet
Boeing has signed a contract with India's Bharat Electronics (BEL) for additional work on the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter programme.
The deal expands on a previous award placed in 2011, says Boeing. Under the contract, the Indian company will produce the Super Hornet's ground power panel, helmet vehicle interface stowage, as well as switch assembly and cockpit console panels.
BEL already produces a stowage panel for the aircraft's Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System connector cable, as well as an avionics cooling system fan test switch panel for a floodlight assembly.
The company also produces identification friend or foe interrogators and data links for the eight Boeing 737-based P-8I maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft ordered by the Indian navy in 2009.
Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
The fact that Japan is ready to sell aircraft to India is remarkable. All the more so if one considers the post Shakti reactions of that country.
Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
relations between china and japan are very iffy at the moment, japan needs friends and unkil has blessed it

Arre bawaji, the 62 book was the first I got - gifted to my brother by cousin Suresh and grabbed by me after appropriate tantrum. I have almost all issues from 62 to mid 80s and I bought a 1959 back issue somewhereKersi D wrote:1962 !!!shiv wrote:The Japanese Shin Maywa seaplane is a good proven design that has been upgraded IMO to be the best in its class in the world. the US-1 predecessor model is in a salamander naval aviation book from around 1984 I have. looks like they have been doing the EEZ patrol, CSAR, and other roles using this basic design for decades now. it should work...the seas around japan are pretty hostile areas to play in.
Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
This Shin Maywa flying boat is quite something. Checked out a couple of youtube videos.
Here's one that shows it going forwards and afterwards, I mean.... backwards. Check out the takeoff roll at 4:30, full thrust is applied at 4:32 and by 4:42 it is airborne. It could take off from a lake!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKo6Xy3a ... 9oyQKtbQoo
A long and detailed video. 1:15 shows an amphibious take-off. Impressive. 2:30 shows an amphibious landing

Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
the landing area shown on the map covers all of the pirate infested arabian sea and adjoining IOR near africa.
should be useful to move marcos units and CG staff around, supporting and covering for CG vessels as a supplement to the dornier DO228.
we certainly could use a lot of them given their vastly superior endurance to the Do228.
the P8 is few in number and way overkill for EEZ and anti-piracy work.

Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
Yes we try and get some 10-15 locally managed. This along with Saryu class boats means we can ask nations like Italy to keep armed personal off Indian coasts and keep piracy threats to the minimum.
Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
should be able to land in the deep sea, deploy a rigid hull inflatable boat with IA marines or marcos units and recover them at end of op.
a couple of gatling guns poking out of the side doors would not hurt.
the japanese military model of US-1 could use depth charges or 2 x LWT also.

Oct, 2012 :: ShinMaywa looks to India for US-2 amphibian sales
Japanese airframer ShinMaywa is confident Japan will order a sixth US-2 amphibious search and rescue (SAR) aircraft within the next two years, and is optimistic about the type's chances in an Indian navy requirement for nine amphibious aircraft.
The company delivered a fifth US-2 to the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force last year, and the defence ministry has already budgeted for the sixth, says Kanji Ishimaru, who leads ShinMaywa's aircraft division. The type is gradually replacing the US-1 SAR aircraft in Japanese service, with only two examples of the US-1A remaining in use.
Ishimaru says it can be challenging producing aircraft in such small numbers, but the company can use employees from its commercial aircraft sub-assembly business and the US-2 maintenance team that supports the type in Japanese service.
Because the US-2 is unarmed, Tokyo allows ShinMaywa to market the design overseas. In January 2012, New Delhi issued a request for information for nine amphibious SAR aircraft. India's requirement could eventually be expanded to total 18 aircraft.
Ishimaru says the US-2 is uniquely suited to flying long-range SAR missions in support of military operations. Powered by four Rolls-Royce AE2100J turboprops - the same powerplant used by the Lockheed Martin C-130J tactical transport already operated by the Indian air force - the Japanese type has a maximum range of 2,540nm (4,700km) and can take off and land in 3m (10ft) swells.
In addition to its 11-man crew, the US-2 can carry 11 passengers. In pure troop-transport configuration it can carry 30 fully-equipped soldiers.
Ishimaru lists rivals for the Indian requirement as the Beriev Be-200 and Bombardier 415. Other possible markets for the US-2 include Brunei and Indonesia, he adds.
US-1A and US-2 aircraft have been involved in more than 900 at-sea rescues since the introduction of the former model in the early 1970s, Ishimaru says.
Re: Indian Military Aviation- Jan 10 2012
Another important and beneficial point for India. C-130 are slated for larger role in IAF...6 already in service and another 6 are a done deal. I'm expecting at least 24 a/c in IAF colors.NRao wrote:Oct, 2012 :: ShinMaywa looks to India for US-2 amphibian sales

Russia upgrades six MiG-29 planes for India, 63 to be upgraded in India
LANGKAWI, Malaysia, March 30 (Itar-Tass) –Six Indian MiGF-29 fighter planes have been upgraded in Russia and the remaining 63 will be upgraded in India, an official from the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG said at the aerospace exhibition LIMA 2013 on Saturday, March 30.
He said the modernisation is carried out in two stages. At the first stage, six planes were flown to Russia, accompanied by an Indian project team, which will then teach specialists in India.
Three of the six planes have already gone back home. The other three are being upgraded at Nizhny Novgorod’s Sokol, which is part of MiG. They will be handed over to India before the end of the year.
At the second stage, the remaining 63 fighter planes will be upgraded in India by Indian specialists.
The modernisation programme was launched in 2009 in cooperation with India’s HAL.
