don't know if anyone noticed this snippet in this article or not..

US set to woo India with classified info intel swap
Talks will cover the situation in the Af-Pak region and the rise of fundamentalist forces like ISIS in West Asia as well as a possible deal on purchase of some 3,000 advanced military vehicles that US troops plan to leave in Afghanistan after withdrawal this year.
What vehicles are they talking of here? MRAPs?

yes MRAPs , thats logical . And with instances of New Delhi's indirect help for Kabul , those Vehicles will be purchased for Afgan army by India.

I posted an article on this before. Apparently India has sent a crew to compete as well. However the Chinese are the only ones taking their own tanks (Type 96s) All other crews are using Russian supplied T72s
The question to IA is why we have not taken the Arjun-MK1 variant. A good opportunity is lost in many ways. Hope the Army will wake up and start using Indian equipment abroad on every opportunity that we get. Huge advantage exists in many ways in doing so.

reason is,

1. Either it has some issues
2. Or IA is scared that once it proves itself it wont be able to buy anymore Ts

^^ It can also be logistics. Except China, no other external participant brought their tank. Transporting few tanks and associated support equipment is not that easy. Except Khan (who move their tanks around in USMC AGTFs) no other international military exercises have the visiting nations getting their tanks (unless they have been deployed to that soil).

If you mean IAF Hercules can carry tanks you are mistaken. Only IAF C17s can carry them. If you mean IAF Hercules can carry the support equipment and personnel, I cannot say if it is feasible in terms of tonnage and number of people required for say a troop of tanks (may be gurus like Rohit or Vaibhav can).
But then we will need several sorties of Hercules (with support) + C17 (with tanks) to move just a troop to Russia which does not make economic sense, especially when Russia is making tanks available for a biathlon. It may be worthwhile for a regiment size exercise. Hence, IMHO Arjun may not have been fielded.

The Games have to be within the same Weight Class range of tanks (As per rules) At best India could have taken the T-90. The Chinese Took only their 96 models and not the 98.. (btw the 96 broke down on the first day).. Also the Chinese Transported the Tanks via Rail and Overland - small cost as compared to transporting them via air.

Baithlon is more about skills of the tank crew and not much about which tank they operate , since we operate the same tank as Russian do T-72/T-90 and many other participating country there was no need to fly out the tank ......Chinese could have bought it because logistically its not challenge.

And well because they are Chinese...They need to show everybody that they are better than them. They follow the American guidebook of International Relations to the letter

World Championship Biathlon Tank result so far , India stood 3rd and Chinese 7th

http://ria.ru/defense_safety/20140806/1018983289.html
"In the overall ranking the first place is the Russian Federation - 26 minutes 27 seconds, the second - the Republic of Kazakhstan - 30 minutes 14 seconds, the Republic of India - 31 minutes 26 seconds", - the press service quoted the chief judge of the competition, Lieutenant-General Yuri Petrov.

Fourth place in the overall ranking Belarusian crew took fifth - tankers of Armenia, on the sixth and seventh place were the crews of Kyrgyzstan and China, showing the same time 32 minutes and 15 seconds.

Chief arbiter reminded that the overall results of individual races will be announced on August 6 after the third round.

The main intrigue of the third day of competition will be the rivalry of the Russian and Chinese crews in the individual race. Russian crew, headed by junior sergeant Bulat Tsyrenova on domestic T-72 will compete in the speed and accuracy of fire with the crew of the Chinese People's Republic, which stands on his tank Type 96A under Lieutenant Howe Phena.

Tank biathlon is analogous ski biathlon and provides 4 types of races: individual, sprint, pursuit, team relay. Participants overcome several obstacles, such as slalom (snake), Wade, barrow (steep climb), rutting bridge and escarpment. Unlike classical biathlon, crews fighting vehicles hit the target, simulating tanks and low-flying helicopters, at distances from 900 to 2200 meters.

Atleast they get it right most of the time!!! We are still one leg in with the American Ishtyle and One leg stuck with the Soviets and the end khichdi is sometimes painful to see.

We haven't discovered our own style yet. One that suits both our pockets and needs.

A russian news report has an interview with the russian crew, who say that the cheeni tank kept breaking down and had engine overheat issues. The guy's name is actually Bulat Tsyrenov, they have got it wrong wrong in the report, he is a conscript. Apparently, they have been practicing since March.

Nice report with photos of the Indian team on the indrus website

Why are the tank crews wearing black? It's not the kind of color suited for Indian climate.

Tank crews known to wear black, in India for sure. Please refer various war exercises pics, even from desert exercises.

How long have you been using the T-72, and do you like this machine?

We have been working with this type of tank since 1979. This is a very good tank.

What are its main advantages in your opinion?

First of all, it's the tank’s good armour protection, as well as its high power output.

How many days have you had in order to prepare for the competition in Russia?

In Russia I had about three weeks. We also had a lot of preparations at home.

Are the machines you use in India somehow different from the machines on which you trained here, and on which you are going to compete?

There are no particular differences. The communication systems are slightly different.

Were the Tank biathlon participants in India recruited from ordinary soldiers, or do you have some special subdivisions for such purposes?

A selection was made from several regiments, the best of them were selected, from whom the crews were formed.

Mobility, accuracy of firepower and most importantly crew's skill will be tested in this exercise however afaik tank/crew protection is not tested in this exercise so in theory one has an advantage in a T-72 as against a modern heavy tank in this event imho akin to judging an AC by it's aerobatic display. We should have taken Arjun there if we are representing India might as well take made in India(no not for the heck for it but because Arjun is in service) there, it would have given us a nice opportunity to see how it fairs.
