dream??
Do you think these regiments don't exists or they are excessive.
we have the M46 uprated to 155mm. we have 155mm Bofors towed Howitzers???
i got this from Orbat.com, let me also validate this.
As where it stands today, IA does not have motorised or tracked 155m SPHs. There are ongoing tenders to procure them. As for the 155mm towed howitzers, there are less than 400 Bofors and around 180 converted 155mm M-46s.

Finally, recognition for ‘father of Manali-Leh Highway’.

A daring and an intelligent officer, can rightfully be called the ‘Father of Manali-Leh Highway’. The officer breathed his last at a very young age of 27 years at Gyantsee (Tibet) for the sake of our country. Border Road Organization and the people of Himachal Pradesh salute the gallant officer for his contribution.”
These words, etched on the stone in the memory of Sukhdev Singh Gill — assistant executive engineer of Central Engineering Services (Class 1) — recently installed by the Border Road Organization (BRO) at Rohtang Pass, Manali-Sarchu road, have at last recognised the heroics of a martyr who died at 27.

Gill was the first man who reached a height of 17,500 feet at Taglang La to conduct surveys for future highways in the area. The first recognition — after over 57 years of his work and 54 years of his death — came after Jagdev Singh Gill, his brother, wrote to the government “giving proof” of Gill’s achievements.

Gill who had also cleared IAS, did his engineering from Punjab Engineering College in Roorkee in 1954. He was then posted as the assistant executive engineer at the high altitude areas between Manali and Leh in August-September 1955.

Flipping the pages of a handwritten survey report of Gill with photographs of his journey across the snow-clad mountains of Manali and Ladakh on foot, Jagdev said: “After conducting survey at Leh, he volunteered for a posting in Tibet, where no one was ready to go. He stayed there for a year and was returning to New Delhi in 1958 for his wedding with the niece of then defence minister Baldev Singh. Suddenly, he fell ill and fainted. Local Tibetan doctors attended to him but his health deteriorated and he died.”

A condolence letter, accompanied by some photographs of a bed-ridden Gill and his cremation in Tibet, reached the family in Ludhiana through M R Sachdeva, an Indian Civil Services officer, in 1958. “An able officer and he gallantly volunteered for service of Gyantsee knowing fully well the difficult conditions of the station. The department has lost a very promising officer with high sense of duty,” read the letter.

“My parents died waiting for my brother to be recognised. In 2002, when Atal Behari Vajpayee and Prem Kumar Dhumal went to lay the foundation of Rohtang tunnel, I wrote the first letter to them and George Fernandes, then defence minister, reminding them of my brother’s work,” said Jagdev, who was just 6 when Gill died.

“Following this, Dhumal asked for records from the Shimla engineering department on June 17, 2002. But to our surprise, the department failed to produce the records. We waited for many years but nothing happened,” said Jagdev, adding that on January 2, 2012, he again wrote to the Prime Minister, President and defence minister A K Antony along with all records that the Shimla department had failed to produce in 2002.

Finally, on June 6, Jagdev received a letter from BRO that a “memory stone” to his brother will be laid on Manali-Sacharu Road.

“I am happy that there is a symbol of his work, for which he laid down his life,” said Jagdev.

Sheila Dikshit opposes National War Memorial at India Gate.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has opposed a Group of Ministers’ recommendation to set up the long-awaited National War Memorial at the India Gate complex, saying it will affect the ambience of the area and restrict people’s movement at the popular hangout zone.

In separate letters to Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath, she said an alternative site should be found for the memorial.

In August, a GoM headed by Mr. Antony had recommended establishment of the National War Memorial at the Princess Park complex near India Gate. A final decision in this regard would be taken by the Union Cabinet.

In her letters sent two days ago, Ms. Dikshit said India Gate is the only popular hangout place for people of the city and coming up of the memorial there would restrict movement of people in the area due to security reasons, top sources said.

She said setting up of the memorial would also affect the ambience of the area.

The armed forces have been demanding a war memorial in the national capital to honour their men who made supreme sacrifice in various wars, conflicts and militancy-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast.

The Defence Ministry has been pushing for construction of the memorial near India Gate which is a memorial for soldiers killed in action during the First World War.In view of the demand of the armed forces, the government had set up the GoM in 2009 which was headed by Pranab Mukherjee before he became the President.

The Urban Development Ministry and the Delhi Urban Art Commission had objected to the memorial, saying it would spoil the ambience at India Gate. Delhi government had conveyed its reservation to the proposal earlier also.

^^ never heard more ridiculous excuse than this, so for our nation what is more important is a hangout place instead of memorial for soldiers who laid their life’s so these bunch of low lifes can hangout

People should ask why sheila dikshit couldn't develop other hangout places in her 10 year rule. Also should ask here if law-and-order isn't her responsibility then what is? Accumulating wealth and collecting Banglaseshi immigrants?

While I don't really agree with Dikshit's argument about it ruining the ambiance of the area, I do fear that the GoI will build some tacky memorial for our soldiers that would be gaudy and cheap with no consideration for architecture, history, symbolism or even the ideals of what our soldiers are fighting for based on some "L1 tender" process.

Indeed I am so convinced of being disappointed with this Government's idea of a "memorial" that anything even half-decent would be a miracle from God as far as I'm concerned.

EDIT: Some examples of how "other people" honor their fallen soldiers in the rest of the world: LINK

3 years on, bunkers near Jammu border unused Built for Rs 7.6 crore Repairs to cost Rs 4.9 crore
The Army is initiating disciplinary action against several officers responsible for lapses that led to the construction of sub-standard bunkers in forward areas near Jammu.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 7.6 crore by a private contractor, these bunkers - meant for storing ammunition - continue to remain unfit for use even three years after these were built The repair work is estimated to cost another Rs 5 crore.

A court of inquiry (CoI) convened to investigate the lapses brought out inadequate soil investigation and lack of proper supervision by the executing engineers and inspecting officers of the Military Engineer Services (MES).

The CoI also revealed hasty issue of completion certificate by the Garrison Engineer concerned while clearly ignoring various defects that had been repeatedly pointed out by the user ordnance unit.

Some portions of the structures collapsed just about a year after construction. A Technical Board of Officers assembled to investigate the defects held improper soil investigation, less foundation depth, foundation resting on filled-up soil, inadequate drainage and improper waterproofing as the reasons for the collapse. The board also observed that the contractor had not complied with the site orders given by the MES representatives.

Last year, the board recommended demolition and reconstruction of the damaged portions after proper soil investigation and redesigning the structure along with associated works, waterproofing and improving the drainage around the bunkers. The work, pegged at Rs 4.9 crore, is yet to be sanctioned.

While the CoI had pinpointed the responsibility on the officers concerned, who are now facing the music, the case also underscored the ineptness of internal controls in the MES. The checks to be exercised at multiple levels proved to be ineffective in preventing lapses despite red flags being raised.

Army to replace desi INSAS with new rifles
NEW DELHI: The Army is getting ready to dump its indigenous INSAS rifles, which have suffered from glitches since their induction in 1994-95 , in favour of new-generation assault rifles with interchangeable barrels for conventional warfare and counter-insurgency ops.

The humble foot-soldiers , often forgotten in the race to buy tanks, submarines and fighters, are also slated to get new close-quarter battle (CBQ) carbines, light machine guns (LMGs), specialized snipers and anti-material 'bunker-bursting' rifles.

But Army chief General Bikram Singh has identified the acquisition of the new assault rifles for the 356 infantry battalions and some other 'fighting and support arms' in the 1.13-million force as a 'Priority-I' project, say sources.

Defence minister A K Antony told Rajya the Sabha on Wednesday that the project to replace the 5.56mm INSAS rifles was underway since 'technological development has created more superior rifles over the years' .

Sources say five foreign firms — Colt, Beretta, Sig Sauer, Ceska and Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) — are in the running to partner the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in bagging the huge project that would eventually cost over Rs 10,000 crore.

Under it, initially 65,000 rifles will be bought directly from the selected foreign vendor , for an estimated Rs 4,850 crore, to equip the 120 infantry battalions deployed on the western and eastern fronts. The OFB will subsequently produce over 113,000 rifles after getting transfer of technology from the vendor. The project could become even bigger if the eight-lakhstrong paramilitary forces also induct these rifles.

"Technical evaluation of bids submitted by the five firms is over. The field evaluation trials will begin in early-2013 . The plan is to begin inducting the new rifles by mid-2014 ,'' said a source.

The process for LMGs and bipod sniper rifles will also kick off soon. The Army wants over 16,000 7.62x51mm LMGs and 3,500 sniper rifles, both with an effective 1-km range, for its infantry battalions to begin with.

imo in conventional war , the hifiness or lack of it of the infantry rifle matters the least and in no particular order, the quality of mechanization(IFV), LMG, artillery matter the most!

Singha saab, don't underestimate the need of the poor infantry soldier. The biggy stuff surely gets the optics' attention, but a soldier needs his basic weapon and equipment in place. End of the day, its the boots on the ground which is equally imperative to win a war... Not shock and awe alone

Nahi Sharma-ji, wasnt commenting on your post. Apologies if that was the impression

The question was in general since dont see any parallel effort being made ( other than 6 foreign firms invited for tenders) or any improvement list sent for the INSAS to continue with them?
Should effectively mean the end of the road for a home grown rifle for a long time to come, IMO

In the eyes of the people who control the acquisitions this is a biggie because of its potentially multi-billion dollar value.

Antony nod for commissioning of paralyzed IAF cadet‬‪

NEW DELHI: The defence ministry in an unprecedented humanitarian decision has given the green signal to the commissioning of a 22-year-old flight cadet, who got paralysed from waist downwards after his trainer aircraft crashed last year, as a full-fledged officer in the IAF.

Defence minister A K Antony on Friday approved the proposal of Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne for retention in service and commissioning'' of flight cadet R K Herojit Singh as a ground duty officer in the accounts branch of IAF as a special case''.

Hailing from a large middle-class family in Manipur, cadet Singh sustained spinal cord injuries after the Kiran aircraft he was flying crashed at the Air Force Station in Hakimpet on August 28, 2011, just two months before he was to be commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot.
He had completed over 80% of his training and bagged several awards at the National Defence Academy and Air Force Academy during his four years of training, including 'the most accomplished flight cadet' of his course,'' said an officer.
With ACM Browne being a firm believer'' in People first, mission always'', along with the force's credo of not being the one to leave its people or equipment behind'', the IAF chief approached Antony for special approval'' in the case.

Cadet Singh will now begin a further six months of training in the accounts branch at the Air Force Academy at Dundigal (Hyderabad) from January 9. The case is special since he did not meet the medical norms for getting commissioned after his injury. He is highly-motivated and eager to serve the IAF,'' he added.

All officers posted out of Army's secret spy unit set up by former Army Chief Gen V K Singh - Economic Times

Posting in full.
NEW DELHI: All officers working in a secret intelligence unit set up by former Army Chief Gen V K Singh have been posted out soon after an inquiry for its proposed disbanding was completed.

The Technical Support Division with 30 personnel was set up in 2010 by Gen Singh and was allegedly involved in snooping on phone conversations of senior Ministry officials during the age controversy involving the former Army Chief.

All the officers have been posted out and it is not clear when fresh officers would be sent there, Army sources said here.

They said the future of unit was also not yet clear. Soon after taking over, Gen Bikram Singh had constituted a Board of Officers under Director General Military Operations Lt Gen Vinod Bhatia to initiate the process to disband the unit.

The Board of Officers was also looking into allegations of expenditure of more than Rs 20 crore by the TSD and its officers within around one year.

The TSD was reporting directly to the then Army Chief Gen V K Singh and it was alleged that the unit may have snooped on the conversations of people even outside the Defence Ministry using its off-the-air interceptor equipment.

Recent reports suggested that the Committee is also looking into the alleged misuse of Military Intelligence funds to file court cases against senior officers.

This is disgraceful. It is not up to an officer to question where he is posted and why. If an officer was posted to the unit, and the unit is being singled out, it is not correct. Why stain the careers of these officers simply because of their association with VK Singh? He was the chief. If the government didnt have faith in him, it shouldnt have appointed him. How can you blame an officer for following the orders of his chief, which necessarily have the approval of the govt? Furthermore, how can anyone blame an officer for doing what the legitimately appointed chief of army staff orders?

The army leadership and its relationship with the govt is in a total shambles. Something is VERY wrong at the top. Continuity should be the watchword of the Army leadership. If every new chief starts dismantling the work of the previous one, the army will be destroyed sooner than one can say "Sabotage". This sort of ad-hoc administration in the MOD is impossible to countenance. What is the minister doing?

Anyway, it was common knowledge among Delhi's 'elite' circuit that VK Singh was removed because of his unfavourable attitude towards greased palms, corruption, and arms deal middlemen.

Note how immediately after this new chief has taken over, the arms deal gravy train has refueled and chugged off again.

All INSAS rifles being replaced.

Artillery systems.

And probably hundreds of smaller deals, which are after all the bread and butter of the middleman.

^^ No worries, I'm sure they won't let him become a liability - they just want to humiliate him.

This is just one more reminder to the "uniforms" from the mandarin paper pusher club about who is the "BOSS" in New Delhi. Disgracing an Ex-Army Chief, who till recently was one of the most powerful people in India, is yet another way the bureaucrats have of letting the other "uniforms" know the "cost" of what they see as intransigence. The Paper pushers in New Delhi are scared witless by the prospect of a military power play because they represent a highly organized and disciplined force of 1.5 million that falls outside their direct control.

If you look at any of the world's top military nations, in all of them the top military brass have always had a LOT of power politically besides their overt military authority. Even in America - the "greatest democracy" you have people like Gen. Patreus who was almost worshiped by the Conservatives and courted politically as a future Congress or Senate candidate and many ex-military brass transition to civilian leadership roles and the Senate quite smoothly. In India the bureaucrats have done everything they can to keep the military down and away from political power. VKS broke the "rules" as it were and the babus are going to make sure they make an example out of him.

Defence forces begin hunt for Tatra truck replacements.

Against the backdrop of a freeze on procurement of Tatra trucks, the Armed Forces have started looking for alternative vehicles to equip them with their missile systems.

In view of Defence Ministry's decision to put on hold the procurement of Tatra trucks pending the CBI probe into allegations of bribery by former Army Chief Gen V K Singh, several key missile projects of the Army and the Air Force have been held up.

The armed forces are looking at trucks being offered by manufacturers from Russia and Belarus including the Volat trucks being offered by a Belarusian firm, defence sources told PTI here today.

Recently, a meeting under Director General (Acquisition) of the Defence Ministry was held with all stakeholders to discuss the issue, they said.

Due to ban on Tatras, several projects including the procurement of land-based version of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos for the IAF and the Army remained stalled along with projects to supply Pinaka missile regiments to the land forces.

If the trucks offered by these firms are accepted, they would be subjected to field trials by the forces and integrated with the missile systems to be put on them.

More than 7,000 Tatra trucks are in service with the armed forces and after the controversy came to light, the Services are also facing issues with their maintenance and repair.

In March 2012, Gen V K Singh had levelled allegations that he was offered a Rs 14 crore bribe by a retired Lt Gen to clear a file related to the procurement of more than 600 Tatra trucks.

After the allegations, Defence Minister A K Antony ordered a CBI probe into it to verify the charges levelled by the former chief and procurement of Tatras was put on hold.

I do not understand this.

What is so special about the imported trucks. Tata has 8X8, 12X12 offerings. L&T has 8X8 offerings. Mahindra is on the verge of 8X8 offerings. I was checking Tata's 8X8 specs against the Tatra 8X8 specs. They are very comparable.

Then why the import route. Anybody with a technical answer. I know the fetish and the lifafa POV.

Lt Gen faces probe on ex-Army chief’s DoB row
Manu Pubby : New Delhi, Wed Dec 12 2012, 00:34 hrs

A senior serving Lt Gen is under the scanner after the Defence Ministry directed the Army to “fix responsibility” for an official communication that was contrary to the government’s view on the age row involving former Army chief General V K Singh.

The media communication reportedly released by Lt Gen Sanjeev Madhok in September last year, when he was posted in Army Headquarters as a Maj Gen, allegedly supported Singh’s contention that his year of birth was 1951 and not 1950.

The communication was reportedly sent after the Ministry of Defence decided to consider 1950 as Singh’s year of birth, making him eligible for retirement in May 2012.

It is learnt that the Army conducted an inquiry after the MoD questioned whether the communication on a “personal matter” involving the then Army chief can be considered as a “performance of official duty”.

The inquiry, sources said, was carried out by Lt Gen Amarjeet Singh Chabbewal, the Master General of Ordnance (MGO).

Madhok is currently commanding a corps.

Sources said the inquiry has been completed but the Army has not yet fixed blame for the media communication.

The Army will, however, be under pressure as the Ministry of Defence has now categorically asked the Army to “fix responsibility” for the communication.

This also lets us know about current Chief. Although we were questioned then, it is clear that the chief is not averse to letting politicians interfere with army (as with this and other cases).
