Did Pakistan Shoot Its Own Drone? Survey This Evidence

Pakistan's claim that it shot down an "Indian spy drone" on Wednesday has been rubbished by India and also rejected by experts who say that the Pakistan police operate an "almost identical" spy drone.

Pakistan summoned India's envoy this morning and complained that India had violated two agreements on air space violations.

The incident has fueled a raging debate on the kind of drones used by both countries and raised the question - did Pakistan shoot down its own drone?

Pakistan claimed that the drone was shot down near the Line of Control in Bhimber in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. The drone was being used for "aerial photography," Pakistan's Inter Services Public Relations alleged.

A photo supplied by the Pakistani military appeared to show a Chinese-made DJI Phantom 3. Experts say the model is sold commercially for aerial filming and would contain no secret military technology. It is a small quadcopter that anyone can buy for around Rs 1.5 lakh on e-bay.

Top officials in India say drones of this make are used by the Pakistan police and is quite unlike larger UAVs or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles used by the armed forces for high altitude reconnaissance or armed drones like the ones used by the US to target terrorists on Pakistani soil.

Indian forces and police use the indigenous "Nethra" drones manufactured by Ideaforge and the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The Indian forces also use advanced Israeli made Searcher and Heron UAVs or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

Pakistan has been pushing for its own lethal drones, and often protests that the US drone strikes targeted at the Taliban and al Qaeda are an infringement of its national sovereignty.

In March, the Pakistani military announced it had test-fired its own drone equipped with a laser-guided missile. Analysts said the video showed a drone similar to models produced by Pakistan's close ally China.

Lockheed Martin to produce, upgrade Sniper ATPs for Pakistan Air Force's F-16s - Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury, Economic Times
Pakistan has decided to upgrade its F-16 fleet, the backbone of its air force, with assistance from the US. The move isn't likely to go down well with India, keeping in mind the military balance in South Asia, analysts said.

It has been learnt that the Pakistan Air Force has sent a follow-on foreign military sale contract to US defence major Lockheed Martin to produce and upgrade Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATPs) for its F-16 fleet. The contract includes the upgrade of Pakistan's existing 22 Sniper ATPs as well as the production of 15 new Sniper ATPs, according to reports in the Pakistani media. Pakistan is understood to possess more than 75 F-16s in its fleet.

Deliveries will begin late this year to satisfy Pakistan's urgent operational needs, according to a report in Pakistan's English Daily Express Tribune. Upgrades will also begin in late 2015 and they will increase compatibility with the aircraft and enable enhanced features.

"Sniper ATP has supported the Pakistan Air Force's mission since 2010," said Rich Lovette, Sniper international programme director at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "Additional Sniper ATPs and upgrades will give the Pak Air Force a more robust precision targeting capability..."

India vindicated: Chinese state media says drone shot down by Pakistan, made in China
In an embarrassing disclosure for Pakistan, Chinese official media on Saturday reported that the "spy" drone Pakistani army shot down along the LoC, claiming it belonged to Indian security forces, was made in China.

The drone was "recognised in Beijing as the Chinese made DJI phantom 3," the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC)-run People's Daily said in a report on its website. Quoting Shanghai-based Observer website, the report said that the Phantom 3 advanced drone represents the most intelligent, most powerful, and most accessible drone to date.

India conveys its concerns to US over military sales to Pakistan
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, also said the government keeps a constant watch on all developments that have a bearing on India's national interest and takes necessary steps to safeguard it.

"Most recently, we have noted that the US State Department made a determination approving possible Foreign Military Sales to Pakistan of AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters and AGM-114R Hellfire II Missiles and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of USD 952 million.

"Government has sensitised the US of our concerns on US military sales to Pakistan. Government has consistently conveyed to the US that it must take into account India-US relations and the impact on India's security in deciding its military assistance to Pakistan," Swaraj said.

I often see puzzlement when people ask "How can bhooka-nanga Pakistan" afford all this. The answer has been obvious for years and it's not just four-fathers' aid.

India struggles to keep its armed forces equipped despite being the xth largest world economy because India spends on things other than the military including social expenditure like education, overall rural development, public health and subsidies.

Pakistanb as a nation has plenty of resources and money and they too would be short of funds if they spent much on education and overall development. They don't. Pakistan is a society ruled by elites. The elites control the economy and are wealthy enough to import deadly weaponry.

If we remove our Western Univeraslist blinkers and see what will happen if we do not spend on development - what we will get is more infant mortality, more maternal mortality, more malnutrition, less control of diseases, increasing illiteracy etc. So who cares. After all India survived WW2 despite Bengal famine and other famines. That is how natiosn survive even when their armies are fighting fit. Pakistan is getting all that - but it is a slow process. So while we talk of militarily defeating Pakistan - the country does not suffer much because they stop wars long before the military is defeated and the long term issues will be the people with disease and malnutrition etc.

In future, Pakistan will have a 250 million under 30 population with access to IEDs and Kalashnikovs. These will be a threat to India. The rich RAPE class may or may not survive - that remains to be seen. The RAPE have sold themselves out to the west and they tell their poor that India is the threat. It is necessary to make those poor young Pakis a threat to the west as well

What people don't understand is that Pakistan's heros are Ghori and Ghazni. These worthies never developed anything but were just glorified thugs. The entire nation wants to emulate this model. As long as a Nation Pakistan exists it presents a clear and present danger to us. It is either we or they who survive.

It will take us 20-30 years of sustained effort without UPA type slow downs to get our defense preparedness High enough that we insulate ourselves while the Pakis. Dependence on Foreign non sustainable weaponry is the Achilles heal of Pakis and Indians.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will buy eight submarines from China in a multibillion-dollar deal that will boost Pakistani navy's maritime capabilities, media reported on Friday.

An agreement was reached here during a meeting between Pakistan finance minister Ishaq Dar and Xu Ziqin, president of state-owned China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company Limited (SCOC) — the trade arm of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.

The two sides agreed in principle on the sale of eight submarines that China will provide to Pakistani navy, Express Tribune reported.

Sources in the country's finance ministry, however, said the deal is subject to final review form higher authorities in Beijing, following which a formal agreement will be signed.

They also said that Pakistan would make payments in four instalments and the delivery will be made in coming years.

According to a vague statement issued by the finance ministry after the meeting, Dar said the visit by the CSOC delegation to Pakistan would strengthen bilateral economic and defence cooperation.

"Pakistan and China have reached an understanding on matters of defence cooperation relating to Pakistan navy," the statement said.

"Financial arrangements to this effect were also concluded," it added.

The statement quoted Xu thanking Dar for his contribution in concluding the arrangements, saying it was reflective of the "deep-rooted" China-Pakistan friendship.

The reports of submarines deal was in the air since the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pakistan in April.

It was reported then that the contract could be worth $4 billion to $5 billion, the biggest arms export deal for communist China.

Pakistan has been negotiating the purchase of submarines from China since 2011. No details were, however, given about the type of the submarines.

But there have been reports that Yuan-class Type-041 diesel-electric submarines were being considered.

The-Type 041 "Yuan" class is described by IHS Jane's Fighting Ships as a diesel electric attack submarine, potentially with stirling air independent propulsion.

Last month, Pakistan and China signed an agreement for construction of six patrol vessels for Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA).

China is Pakistan's biggest supplier of military hardware, which includes battle tanks, naval ships as well as fighter jets. The two jointly manufacture J-17 Thunder warplane.

More likely they've just taken them to covert training camps to send over the LoC. Maybe we should share with uncle our photobook with profile pictures of dead terrorists. They might identify some old friends amongst them.

Saudi Arabia is widely believed to have bankrolled the Pakistani nuclear weapons program. In exchange, Riyadh reportedly expects Islamabad to provide missiles in times of trouble to defend the kingdom.

And the tap which has being drying up for a while, may entirely close by the end of this year, as the US continues its withdrawal from Afghanistan.

CSF may not be possible beyond 2015: US
BAQIR SAJJAD SYED

ISLAMABAD: The United States has indicated to Pakistan that further extension in the Coalition Support Fund (CSF) beyond 2015 may not be possible.

The issue about the future of CSF, according to a defence source, was discussed at the 23rd Defence Consultative Group Meeting (DCG)-Interim Progress Review (IPR) held at the defence ministry on Tuesday. Principal Deputy Secretary of Defence Ms Kelly Magsamen led the US delegation comprising officials of the defence and state departments.

Under the CSF arrangement, the US reimbursed Pakistan for operations and maintenance costs incurred in direct support of its operations in Afghanistan. Since 2001, the US has reimbursed $13 billion to Pakistan, which is the largest recipient of the fund.

(Pakistan gets $336m in Coalition Support Fund, foreign reserves climb to $19bn)

The arrangement was supposed to end with the completion of the drawdown in December 2014, but the US government through legislation extended the programme for another year. The extended programme, which came with extra conditions, allowed reimbursement of up to $1bn.

At the DCG meeting Pakistan sought its further extension due to continuing challenges. Besides helping in meeting security expenses, the government has been using CSF inflows to narrow down current account deficit.

A source said the US unwillingness to continue the programme was because of its changing priorities as it appeared more focused on the challenges posed by Middle Eastern terror group Daesh.

Speaking at the forum, Defence Secretary retired Lt Gen Alam Khattak emphasised on the importance of Pakistan in the regional security and said: “Pakistan is at the frontline fighting for the stability of the region. … Pakistan’s armed forces are committed to flushing terrorists out of the area by continuing operation Zarb-i-Azb.”

Pakistan, according to the source, needs sustained assistance for continuation of operations as well as rehabilitation of the displaced people. About two million people have been displaced because of counter-militancy operations and they are now being rehabilitated at a cost of Rs100bn.

Rehabilitation of IDPs technically does not come under the activities mandated under the CSF, but Pakistani officials use this argument to strengthen their case for continuation of the programme.

Pakistan had in 2014 lobbied for conversion of the CSF into a ‘Stability Support Fund’ after changing some of its parameters. The US administration initially looked convinced about the proposal, but it couldn’t materialise due to Pakistan government’s failure to pursue the matter at the political level. Additionally, the source said, the US needed to realise that Daesh was also posing a serious threat to this region.

According to a defence ministry’s statement on the meeting, the US delegation agreed that Pakistan was a stabilising factor in the region following the drawdown of coalition forces and was contributing to efforts for peace in the region.

It said the participants of the meeting were hopeful that “outstanding issues related to defence cooperation between USA and Pakistan” would soon be resolved. But the statement did not say what the outstanding issues were.

>> 374 M113A2 Armored Personnel Carrier

thats a huge number - 7 regiments. will further help their mech units and ATGM batallions.
just one example of how khans ample boneyards can make a huge impact.
in another instance more than 100 x M109 155mm SP guns were given in one shot.
these are cheap and working equalizers that give them confidence they can hold off indian pressure.

I had suggested we harvest M113 from the boneyard for our own use and even license build it as a cheap and protected people mover(vs trucks) since being out of production, the license will likely be really cheap and we can localize to our hearts content...like adding thin sheets of composite armour, anti-missile slat armour, manual Nag launcher , Nag-VL carrier, anti-personnel radar-optronic picket post...once u have a cheap cardboard box, anything can be put on it and tried out. it could be carried inside C130 as well or in our LST ships.

instead we have the armata thing

IA makes no serious effort to lever the skills of our automotive industry in useful projects and mass scale production , blurring the line between

how is a IA unit on foot patrol supposed to deal with such threats in the open terrain of tibet. they will run rings and destroy the unit.

if we ever get around to it, a expensive global tender will be floated to get the best available (50 units), vs 5000 from local production that will be good enough.

Pakistan Will Purchase Four Russian Mi-35M Helicopters
"The contract for four Mi-35M transport and attack helicopters was signed late last week," an embassy spokesperson told RIA Novosti.

According to the spokesperson, the agreement was reached between Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport and Pakistan's Ministry of Defense.

In July, Deputy CEO of Russian Helicopters Andrey Shibitov said a decision to supply Mi-35M helicopters to Pakistan to fight terrorism could be made in the near future.

Dawn reports that no Jaziya reimbursements from Coalition Support Fund (CSF) will be forthcoming as US will not certify that the Punjabi dominated uniformed Jihadi’s of the military of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan have adequately carried out counter-terrorism operation in North Waziristan targeting their Un-uniformed Jihadi proxy’s belonging to the Haqqani Network:
ISLAMABAD: In a move that has blocked the disbursement of the next tranche of Coalition Support Fund (CSF), the United States has told Pakistan that it would not be certifying to the Congress that its (Pakistani) counter-terrorism operation in North Waziristan damaged the Haqqani network.

This was conveyed by the US Department of Defence to the Pakistani mission in Washington as well as to the authorities in Islamabad, according to a highly placed source.

IMO this is just the beginning of the steady flow of new system for Pakies, as demand for Russian systems dry out in India. Since we already have an active attack helo program, there is little or no probability we will be acquiring any foreign attack helo in numbers.

TBH, Pakistan simply does not have the economy to supplant India in any meaningful sense. These occasional sales are like a Russian reminder that if we "move to US" orbit, they can sell to TSP too. Besides, they too want some leverage with TSP - Afghan/CAR politics and all.
Having said that, I think they will continue to be receptive to Indian interests because we have historically underinvested in our MIC and as such, we need Russian assistance in our 5G heavy fighter segment and several other areas for years to come. So we remain their biggest and most lucrative market. China will not order in bulk. Even the Su-35 order is for some 24 planes and thats because it seems thats the minimum Russia insisted PRC buy.

Pakistan shows interest in Russia's Yak-130 trainer aircraft.

Pakistan could become the fourth country to operate the Yak-130 combat trainer aircraft, the website Defenseworld.net has reported, saying that Islamabad has expressed an interest in the aircraft. The website claims that the parties have already held preliminary talks.

Industry sources told defenseworld.net that Pakistan Air Force officials have been talking to executives from Rosoboronexport and Irkut.

According to the report, the Pakistani side has evaluated the flight performance of the Yak-130 and noted “its unique feature of mimicking the flying characteristics of a number of fighter aircraft such as the F-16 and JF-17, which will make the task of transiting from a trainer to a fighter a lot easy for pilots.”

The Yak-130 is designed for training flying school cadets in piloting skills and combat engagements against ground and air targets specific to fourth- and fifth-generation aircraft.

For a training flight, the aircraft can be programmed to suit different weather conditions and take into account the specific type of aircraft for which the pilot is trained – from the Russian Su-30 to the US F-35 and the French Rafale.

Pakistan’s acquisition of the Yak-130 would be the second purchase the country has made of Russian aircraft. In 2014, Russia lifted its arms embargo against Pakistan, and a contract for the supply of four Mi-35M transport and attack helicopters was concluded.

Is this (and the 'Gift' of T-38s from Turkey) because they can't afford the front line fighters ?

These advanced jet trainers can be quite useful as second line defenders or light attack aircraft.

They would also be useful for their showy 'war on terror' ops preserving the precious F16s and JF17s for the real deal jihad.

These aircraft would be easy prey for the Tejas, which is another reason why i would like a huge number of Tejas to be added to the IAF

Will only hurt Indian forces (assuming that these two are of some/great importance).

Much like Indo-pak, there is intra-SD (India vs. Paki groups) and also intrer company politics. Bell is building a brand new facility, hiring people, etc. No way they care about all this - and one should not expect that.

The best and perhaps the only way for India to get back is to build her own Apache (and export them). Till that happens this silliness will continue.

Attack helos will have very limited offensive value in a traditional war between India and Pakistan-- air will be saturated with manpads launched missile--- May be once a substantial control over the existing ground based radars and infrastructure is wrestled...they can come in to take out one of vehicles or position --- this is not an insurgency scenario we are taking about like Irag and Afghanistan
