The mockup was shown on L7T site at AI 2010. Saya from defenceforum india had taken the pics.

I think this is the older TEL. I think TATA reported at DefExpo'12, that Nirbhay will be based on the indigenous TATA 12X12. I remember Dr. Saraswat citing this change as the reason for the delay (though he did not say TATA, he said indigenous).

Tata Motors’ Defence Vehicles
Tata 12x12 Prahaar Missile System:
Tata Motors Ltd has developed an indigenous high mobility, all-terrain and all-wheel drive, Tata LPTA 5252-12 X12 vehicle, specifically for missile launcher cum carrier applications like integration of Prahar, BrahMos and Nirbhay Missiles, in close coordination with R&DE – DRDO.

Interestingly, Frontline magazine had an article as far back as Dec 1996-Jan 1997, which referred to Lakshya as a possible cruise missile. Around the same time, the "Economist" magazine hinted that it could be one.

Only possibility is a small diameter tail mounted contra rotating prop fan but that is an odd choice that goes against everything done so far in the field. The stuff about being reusable and releasing bombs sounds too starship enterprisey and impractical. Hope we just have a usable, medium range cruise missile that will become operational in 2-4 years max and not another 20 yr black hole project. Fingers crossed and good luck to DRDO.

I wonder what those 3 huge "rooms" on the nirbhay TEL are for. seems like quite a lot for a GLCM launcher.
the missile themselves look of huge size and length and likely sized for naval VL tubes ... could be 25" diameter and not 21" and be more than 18feet in length.

the middle one seems like a proper room with the launching controls and seen in brahmos TEL as well which has two "rooms" not three.

here is the old tomahawk launcher - very similar to our layout
http://www.atomicexpress.net/wp-content ... glcm_5.jpg

cheen long sword appears to be a more compact system with just 8 wheels and no semi-trailer ... the two front axles are likely steerable

The dimensions of the Nirbhay are available on the previous page in a post by Indranil Roy which contains a line drawing of the Nirbhay (Clicky). The diameter is not 25 inches and the length is greater than 18 feet.

As that line drawing of the Nirbhay has been extracted from a DRDO tender it also has the ring of authenticity.

As an aside, no propfan in evidence.

:) Just compared physical parameters of Tomahawk and Nirbhay which are on very similar lines, so simple logic says Nirbhay on a mission 1000 KM away will do the job and will be able to return home even if it used its loitering feature. Sounds good isn't it...

Experts easily look beyond the punch lines, they must be knowing it can do missions 2000 to 2500 KM away if it need not come back home.

Waiting for the sweet news of success with fingers crossed.

Question though :D

If they are using Nirbhay for full range of 1000 KM (and as a fact its just a test) they must not be wasting its body they will be calling it back home, Gurus please shed some light.......

If answer is affirmative then the whole test should last for not less than 3 hrs, it will be a good test of all guidance systems, communication links and various other subsystems.

Eagerly waiting to hear news of "Success"

The flight time is a bit more than 1 hour. Hit time will be about 1:10 if tested for 1000km.

Just race for first time reported on ... channel.
These channels change the word in a matter of minutes.
Anyway ..they might have gone by conviction like ourselves..that the test is a full success.

Doesnt say failure...says it was terminated, wonder why when everything was working fine
"All systems onboard the missiles performed perfectly for the first 20 minutes. The radars tracking reported good health till then. But after 20 minutes, the missile drifted away from the path.

Unlikely, I think...more likely failure in mechanicals/hydraulics/control surfaces.....Would be interesting to know
If it was flying level and straight at that time or executing some manouevere.

I hope the whiners don't have a whining orgy this time around. Failure is just a stepping stone to success. All the same, because of the constantly whining and traitorous glee of the DDM in our failures, sometimes I wish that they just launch a finished product at a media event like they did with Sagarika.
