Looks like DDM. Those explosions must have been the sonic boom. Dust storms cannot be caused by planes unless they were flaying "really really" low.
A loud explosion was accompanied by a dust-storm caused by the planes, said villagers
Now why they would intercept a high altitude weather balloon, at supersonic speed and at a very low level!!

Added later. I found it. Here is the link.

IAF blooper: Fighter jet accidently drops 5 bombs in Rajasthan, loud explosion heard

What is this about? Is this DDMitis?
They KNOW it is a false report, but insist on keeping the headline. Read down to the bottom.
An earlier version, with inputs from ANI, said IAF had accidentally dropped five bombs in Barmer. But being too fri**** lazy to get our heads out of their favorite locations, we keep the headline the same.

The only direct quote from iaf specifies that this was an intercept and the fighter shot it down.

It was in day light so visual confirmation would have been done. Now was it a aam or guns?

who cares, the threat is neutralized. Hmmm, lots of UFOs flying over India lately. Several drones in the periphery of major airports, balloons, kites, RC planes. Either it's pukies, or innocent minority trying to find places to blow up or a bunch of teens screwing around. If the object carried by the balloon was large enough to form cracks in houses, must have been a camera and recording equipment.

One of the citations from this years' award has this gem. What was 9 SF doing killing khaki-pakis @ LOC hain?
SUBEDAR MAHENDRA SINGH, SENA MEDAL

Subedar Mahendra Singh was a veteran of numerous firefights, where, time and again his inspiring leadership, resilience and courage resulted in outstanding successes. He had been awarded Sena Medal on the Line of Control for exemplary courage and initiative wherein he shot dead a Pakistan Regular Army in 2013.

On 02 Sep 2015 at 2015 hours, contact was established with terrorists in Darel forest at Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir resulting in multiple splinter injuries to two comrades. Displaying exemplary leadership, the JCO moved with Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami to evacuate his comrades, drawing heavy fire in the process. Sensing the danger to his men, Subedar Mahendra immediately returned fire and displaying raw aggression charged and eliminated one terrorist at close quarters. His audaciousness startled the other terrorist who opened indiscriminate fire at him. Undeterred, he closed in with the terrorists when one terrorist rushed out firing and grievously wounded Subedar Mahendra in the abdomen. Despite his injury which paralysed him below the waist, he shot dead the terrorist at point blank range. Heedless of the threat posed by the terrorist fire and his incapacitating wound, he, in order to prevent any further casualties, forbade all attempts to evacuate him and endured tremendous pain to extricate himself.
For his exemplary leadership, selflessness and courage beyond compare while eliminating two foreign terrorists and assisting in casualty evacuation despite being paralysed below the waist, Subedar Mahendra Singh, Sena Medal is awarded “KIRTI CHAKRA”

Ten Indian soldiers trapped by an avalanche in Siachen. Please, for crying out loud, let there be a happy ending to this story. Hope they are all rescued, and can resume duty.

These Indian calamities, like the drowning of 14 students 2 days ago in Mumbai, are very annoying and distressing. They happen over and again.

^People die in avalanches even in sports. These boys gave their lives on *north* siachen in peak winter. Feel proud of your army - if you want to stress, then it is the reaction to some in the media who may say they died in an accident or they should be more careful.

Chalta hai and 0 public memory is ironically the survival strategy of our country.

Avalanche buries 10 Army personnel in Siachen - The Hindu, Updated: February 3, 2016 19:07 IST
Ten Army personnel were buried under snow after their camp on the northern part of Siachen glacier was hit by a major avalanche on Wednesday.

According to preliminary information, a major avalanche struck the Indian Army post in northern Siachen glacier located at a height of 19,600 feet in the early hours on Wednesday morning.

“The post was manned by one Junior Commissioned Officer and nine soldiers,” a senior Army officer said.

Rescue operations by specialised teams from Army and Air Force are underway to rescue the soldiers and are being coordinated from Leh and Udhampur.

Doesn't look good, but hoping for a miracle.

Soldiers trapped in Siachen presumed dead - Dinakar Peri, The Hindu, Updated: February 4, 2016 19:23 IST
The Army and Air Force have intensified rescue efforts to locate the ten missing soldiers on the Siachen glacier who are buried under snow. However officials said the soldiers are presumed dead given the extreme conditions.

“Rescue teams are braving adverse weather and effects of rarified atmosphere to locate and rescue survivors. However, it is with deepest of regrets that we have to state that chances of finding any survivors are now very remote,” an Army spokesperson said on Thursday.

Another senior official said that given the time, temperature and conditions chances of survival are unlikely and they were hoping for a miracle.

Early in the day a very large rescue team has been deployed today to reach down till the post, the officer said. As per inputs received complete blocks of snow and ice had fallen on the post burying it very deep and clearing it was a very difficult task.

To tackle the snow the officer said, “Heavy Snow cutters and major equipment had been put into use to clear and cut the ice blocks hence time delay is happening.”

Rescue teams are working at extremely low temperatures hovering between -25 to 45 degrees putting their lives at risk.

In the early hours of the morning on Wednesday a major avalanche struck an Indian Army post in Northern Siachen Glacier located at a height of 19600 feet. One Junior Commissioned Officer and nine soldiers manning the post were buried in it.

As of now rescue operations are still on. Further progress will be intimated when available, the officer added.

Indian Army has been controlling the dominant heights of Siachen glacier, the world’s highest battlefield, since occupying it in 1984 under Operation Meghdoot.

Pakistan offers help

Pakistan which, occupies lower altitudes on the glacier, has offered help in rescuing the missing soldiers.

The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) of Pakistan had tweeted: “Pakistan Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called his Indian counterpart today and offered help for rescue of Indian soldiers who came under snow Avalanche in Northern Areas.”

However Indian Army while appreciating the Pakistani offer of help declined it as “adequate resources and personnel have already been pressed into service.”

India has made several enhancements to coastal security post 26/11, rather speedy by Indian standards. While we may have expended a lot of treasure building that capacity and capability (eg: IMAC Gurgaon), in the end our security is much more robust. We also raised a new force called Sagar Prahari Bal equipped with fast interceptors. Now similar toughening up is being done for Pathankot. Including new SF raisings.

That is why I think these terrorist attacks are a strategic failure for Pakistan.

'Our sailors stay alert and awake': Navy Chief
ANI | Vishakhapatnam Feb 08, 2016 03:58 PM IST

In the wake of David Coleman Headley's revelation that two attempts were made prior to the final attack in Mumbai on November 26, 2008, Navy Chief Admiral R.K. Dhowan on Monday assured the nation that the sailors stay alert and awake so that the people can sleep peacefully.

Meanwhile, Admiral (Retired) Suresh Mehta, who was then the chief of Naval Staff, said that various improvements were brought after the 2008 attack.

"The coast line is very long so there are possibilities of entering. After that, we put up various improvements. They have all taken effect. There is a centralised control room now. Inputs from everywhere come there. Real time information is available in one place whether it is Police, Coast Guard or Navy or aircraft," he told ANI.

"We have increased the surveillance on the coast. There are increased numbers of coastal police stations. And keeping all this in mind, I don't think such an event must get repeated. There was no coordination problem in 2008," he added....

What also needs to be sped up is the National Counter Intelligence Grid. This was an UPA brainchild, but as with all UPA projects, went nowhere. This should include electronic filing of FIRs, having zonal intelligence hubs, with everything feeding the central grid. Only then we can correlate links between smugglers, local mafia, terrorists etc.

With Big-Data number crunching, signal-extraction & visualization capabilities all becoming commoditized, such a project could easily be outsourced to one of the IT-vity companies via a bidding process.

NATGRID is already there. However its a one way i.e. from local to Delhi.

No cross state links. IOW, TN cannot access Telangana records.

While Delhi specifically MHA can access both.

Some big ITVTY guru was the secy for implementing and came up with this moron implementation to ensure NATGRID is handicapped from the beginning.

JAMMU : Pakistan troops today fired unprovoked and targeted forward posts thus violating this year’s first ceasefire in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Pakistan fired unprovoked in Poonch Sector and violated the truce,” defence spokesperson here today said. He said the ceasefire violation by Pakistan Army was reported in Shahpur area of Poonch Sector, adding that, “there was exchange of mortar fire and automatics from about mid night to 0430 hours.”
The spokesperson said that own troops have responded appropriately while no casualty or damage has been reported in the firing. Earlier Pakistan fired heavily on LoC in Poonch in September last year. (AGENCIES)

^^ Am I the only one to consider this a big let down ? Surveillance is all fine, but to think that it is going to stop infiltration seems wishful thinking. What I didn't see anywhere in the plan is any mention of counter-offensive. For example, why don't we equip BSF (which has some 20 arty regiments with 105mm IFG if Google chacha is right) with a rapid action arty / heavy mortar force to neutralize PA border outposts ?

We're ceding space and initiative by going with a purely defensive mindset.

Yes - everybody likes their Maginot line. Given the abundance of recruits LeT can find in Pakjab, they can keep probing and attack at leisure.
You need deterrence. The cost has to be borne by Pakistan and not solely by us.

Can't disagree with this - but there is an irony in the Maginot line idea or even the meme of "Great wall to keep barbarians out"

There is a clear link between building of the LoC fence and reduction in infiltration into J&K. It has also resulted in a recent increase in infiltration across the Punjab international border (Gurdaspur/Pathankot attacks) because the BSF at the IB is now relatively less of a deterrent than the fence.

That apart - a Maginot line may never stop militaries, but if even the shit hits the fan in Pakjab and Sindh - a border fence will help us keep refugee camps in the Pakistan side of the border rather than within Indian territory as we did in 1971. Once refugees come in there is no sending thm back. So a few Rupees invested in a fence toady may be something we will be grateful for in future.

+1. Remember, they had to AVOID the Maginot line for the most part. The main attack bypassed it, which shows how much of a deterrent (at least in slowing it down) such a defense is, even for the blitzkrieg . We are talking of porki terrorists here, which is nothing compared to that.

If we wall up all of the border, they will have to pay a higher price to get in. Retaliation can happen regardless of any walls or fences. That is entirely up to the policy at the center and the existence of a fence is no factor in that.

BSF gets a pat for reining in cow theft
New Delhi, May 20: Union home minister Rajnath Singh today praised the Border Security Force for bringing down cow smuggling along the Bangladesh border and asked it to step up the vigil further.

"Cow smuggling has been taking place for many years now... I congratulate BSF jawans for bringing down the numbers from 23 lakh to 3-3.5 lakh now. I would like to exhort the jawans and officers of the BSF that in order to stop cow smuggling, we will have to be more alert and vigilant. This has to stop," Rajnath said at a BSF event at Vigyan Bhavan in the capital.

The home ministry had also written to state governments on cow smuggling, he said.

Rajnath said the ministry was planning to create a national "think tank" that would work to ensure India's land borders are "absolutely safe" and "foolproof".

"The incidents of infiltration have come down by about 50 per cent and a big number of terrorists have been killed. I give the credit for this to the bravery of our security personnel," the minister said.

Addressing the BSF brass, led by director-general K.K. Sharma, he said: "Try, as much as you can, that troops deployed on the borders do not have to undergo any kind of stress. I don't need to tell you how to do this."

An amount of Rs 635 crore has been earmarked by the government to create 13 new integrated check posts (ICPs) at various land borders, he said.

For records.

AVM Bahadur (retd):

http://www.dailyo.in/politics/surgical- ... 13209.html
The date was July 20, 1981. I was a flying officer and was detailed to fly the Northern Army Commander, Lt-General SP Malhotra, to Nangi Tekri, a post south-west of Poonch, and from which one of the latest surgical strike teams went in this time too, according to some press reports.

Nangi Tekri had a company of Gurkha battalion manning the post that juts into the Pakistan-held area. The post gets its name from the fact that it is as bald as bald can be - there is not a blade of grass for some reason (at least it was so in the 1980s).

The Army commander was going to Nangi Tekri to meet the company who had lost a young captain a few days ago to an ambush by the Pakistani posts on the opposite side; what was worse, the Pakistanis did not let our Gurkhas retrieve his body throughout the night by shooting at troops whenever they attempted to do so.

On landing, the Army commander went straight in for a briefing. He had a grim look when he came out, surveyed the ambush spot that was way into our territory, and met the subedar major (SM) outside the briefing tent - the SM is the senior-most junior commissioned officer and is very influential in maintaining morale as he is the link between officers and jawans.

I heard him ask the SM: "Sahab kya jawab dena hai" (what’s the reply that should be given)? The diminutive 4ft-and-a-few-inches-tall SM looked up at the 6ft-plus Army commander and said: "Sahab, aap hum se prashan mat poochna" (sir, don’t ask us questions later).

General Malhotra replied: "Theek hai - izzat ka sawal hai - ek ke badle teen hone chahiye" (ok, it’s a question of prestige. There should be three for one). And a few days later, that's what happened. Nangi Tekri was a quiet sector thereafter!

The calm came about through a flag meeting. Pilot officer Raju Srinivasan flew a few days later to Nangi Tekri with GOC XVI Corps, Lt-Gen Handoo, for the meeting requested by the Pakistanis, since the Gurkhas had really plastered them - as he remembers, 14 Pakistani troops had been accounted for!

In the helicopter was a carton of Charminar cigarettes, with the small placard "with compliments of the Indian Army'', that was presented to the Pakistani delegation. On the return flight, the Corps commander was asked why he had presented Charminar cigarettes (a very strong brand) while much better ones were available? The General remarked: “Pakistani Generals love Charminar - they got used to it when they were POWs in India!” :rotfl:

So much for a light-hearted end to what is a serious life-and-death situation. There was no hue and cry or the press going nuts in 1981 over the Nangi Tekri incident - the way it has been this time after the surgical strikes.

Summary of Small arms and Mortar exchanges across LoC in last 24 hours

http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-new ... KxbRO.html
Five people, including a police officer, were injured and a defence fuel dump caught fire on Monday as Pakistan opened fire and rained mortar shells on villages and Indian posts along the LoC in Poonch sector.

With India hitting back, the exchange of fire was on when the reports last came in. In the last 24 hours, Pakistan has violated the 13-year-old ceasefire five times, taking to 10 the number of violations following India’s September 29 “surgical strikes” across the Line of Control.

The boundary wall and a bunker of a camp shared by the army and Border Security Force were damaged when shells fired by Pakistani side hit kerosene barrels and started a fire at Gali Maidan in Saujian sector.

“A bunker and boundary wall were damaged partially but there was no loss of life. Everyone is safe,” a BSF officer said.
The camp, which is barely 3km from the LoC, provides supplies to soldiers posted along the de facto border and was on the radar of Pakistani troops.

Poonch because of its topography is vulnerable to infiltration. Pakistan often pushes militants providing them cover fire.
The Centre had after the LoC raid asked Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab to move people living close to Pakistan frontier to safer locations.

Pakistan fired at posts along the LoC in Shahpur Kerni sector at around 11am, defence spokesperson Lt Col Manish Mehta said. They fired 120 mm, 80mm mortar bombs, automatic weapons and small arms, he said, adding the exchange was on.

Two hours later, they targeted posts in Mandi and Saujian sectors, Mehta said.

Two people were wounded in Qasba village and three in Gagrian, including special police officer Shah Begum. The injured have been moved to hospitals.

Another defence source said Pakistan on Sunday night fired at Kranti post.

“They had opened fire at Indian post Kranti and we retaliated stingingly at their Roza post on their side of the LoC,” a defence source said

Let this be Paki "retaliation" for surgical strike. Terror attacks are nor retaliation. They are business as usual The more of this , the better. India can keep widening the gap between so called nuclear war and this.

At this rate in 5 years, the cost of rebuilding the bunkers will be really really high. Indian army may have been doing this all along but now hopefully they will increase the cost by at least 2 to 3 times more. The "official" ratio at least 1:10 . There was article that said get 3 to 1. Hopefully ground commanders will get more "belligerent" and ask for 1:10 ( izzat ka sawal). They should have competition among the ground commanders as to who got the more kills in terms of ratio.

hopefully every bunker with 50 to 100 kms along west of LOC is toast. that would be ideal. who to say after that LOC may magically move west wards.

there will be a day ... hopefully in my lifetime.
