Excellent! It's out of the shadows :) . I was a little concerned about a postponement, since there was no word on it. I guess one should give ISRO as little as one week before the scheduled launch, for the official announcement.

It has a couple of firsts- the first to use the "XL" version of the PSLV for a purely commercial launch, and the first time this many satellites, 5, all belong to a single country.

today morning around 6:45am saw what appeared like a ISRO satellite being transported south on the ORR perhaps to sri harikota etc.
there is hi-security ISRO satellite center around 5km north in doddenakundi on ORR.

leading was a GOI ambulance a tempo traveller with siren
then a couple of govt vehicles
the a semi trailer with a 20ft container strapped down and covered with plastic sheet
between the cab and container there is a special AC cabin with chairs and live computers showing some data...maybe the container has vibration and temp sensors and active cooling....one engineer had opened the door to stand and enjoy the breeze so I got a glimpse.
then another vehicle , another empty semi trailer and another tail vehicle.

it was proceeding sedately with sirens on at around 25kmph to the south.

even if not a sat, must be some high value sensitive cargo.

ISRO to undertake biggest commercial launch on July 10.

In the heaviest ever commercial mission undertaken by ISRO and its commercial arm Antrix, the country's workhorse the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) will put in orbit five foreign satellites from the spaceport of Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on
July 10.

With the overall liftoff mass of the five satellites amounting to about 1,440 kg, this mission becomes the heaviest commercial mission ever undertaken by Antrix/ISRO, the Indian space agency said.

In its 13th flight, PSLVC28 will launch three identical DMC3 optical earth observation satellites built by Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), United Kingdom (UK).
The three DMC3 satellites, each weighing 447 kg, will be launched into a 647 km SunSynchronous Orbit (SSO) using the highend version of PSLV (PSLVXL), ISRO said on its website. PSLVC28 will be the ninth flight of PSLV in 'XL' configuration.

In addition, the rocket will also carry two auxiliary satellites from UK CBNT1, a technology demonstrator earth observation micro satellite built by SSTL, and DeOrbitSail, a technology demonstrator nano satellite built by Surrey Space Centre, it said.

Accommodating the three DMC3 satellites each with a height of about 3 metre within the existing payload fairing of PSLV, was a challenge. To mount these satellites onto the launcher, a circular Launcher adaptor called Ladaptor and a triangular deck called Multiple Satellite AdapterVersion 2 (MSAV2), were newly designed and realised by ISRO for this specific purpose

Indian space agency gets ready for two launches
As an Indian rocket is getting ready to put five British satellites into orbit on July 10, officials at the Sriharikota space port are also working on an Indian satellite launch, an official said on Monday.

India will launch a communications satellite GSAT6 sometime after July 10.

"Work is progressing smoothly for the July 10 night rocket launch. ...
..
..
He said the GSAT6 communication satellite will be put into space aboard a\ heavier rocket called geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV).

The GSLV rocket's first stage/engine has been assembled and the activities relating to that rocket assembly are progressing smoothly.

Only after the GSLV rocket launch the testing of a small model of reusable launch vehicle shaped like an aeroplane would be done, the ISRO official said.

Earlier, it was said the test reusable launch vehicle would happen in July 2015.

ISRO officials had told IANS that the test model reusable launch vehicle would be mounted on a strap-on solid booster of PSLV rocket with 9-tonne fuel.

At an altitude of 70 km, the model would get separated and would glide back to earth. The descent speed would be around 2 km per second.

"The descent speed would be controlled through the fins on the machine. In order to protect the equipment from friction heat when it comes back, necessary protective tiles are fixed," the ISRO official had told IANS.

The experimental vehicle would weigh around 1.5 tonne which is a far cry from the actual vehicle that is expected to carry a satellite.

This must have been the payload that Singha saw being transported a few days ago- it was supposed to reach the spaceport today.

That's great news, and sets to rest notions that the launch may be delayed until as late as March, 2016.

How long does it take to 'stack' a rocket like the GSLV- one stage has already been fully assembled.

GSLV D6 launch is planned for 2nd half of August.
When PSLV C2 was launched it was mentioned "We were able to cut down the total vehicle assembly time from 100 days during the first launch to 55 days now."
IIRC currently vehicle assembly is between 1-2 months and after launch around 1 month servicing time of the launch pad

Salem Steel develops aerospace grade steel for ISRO
N. ANAND

Salem Steel Ltd. (SSL) has successfully developed and processed aerospace grade stainless steel slabs for ISRO on a trial basis.

“For the first time, we have indigenously developed and processed the aerospace grade stainless steel in Salem. The steel slabs were provided by ISRO. The end result was development of import-substitute exotic Russian grade (ICSS-1218) slabs that are used in the construction of the rocket launch vehicles. It will be shipped to ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion System Centre (LPSC) soon,” said a Salem Steel official.

Taking the help of ISRO scientists, a SAIL team processed electro-slag re-melted (ESR) and forged slabs. The final product conforms to ICSS-1218 that is equivalent to SS 321 grade stainless steel slabs.

“We have been regularly processing stainless steelfor various satellite launch vehicles, including the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles that carried the Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan missions into the space,” he said.

Another official said that the culmination of the three-month trial processing of 321 grade stainless steel laid the foundation for a sustained collaborative ‘Make in India’ initiative between SAIL and ISRO for developing and processing other aerospace grades for the space launch vehicle components.

Out of curiosity why does it take so much time tp fill the liquid propellants. They take nearly 2 days to do this. What are the challenges (apart from the high combustibility and explosive and toxic nature) of these ppropellants. Also in case of any spill or leak how are these cleaned up from the launch pad etc avoiding explosions (I remember important space researchers getting killed in Russia so much so that no key people are allowed near the launch pad to monitor work there)

Live telecast: http://webcast.gov.in/live/
Launch at 9:53 PM IST,

Telecast should start about half hour-45 mins before, with some scintillating sitar-vaadan, and DD commentator's clipped english documentary.

Is the service tower withdrawn before completing propellant filling of all stages ? The above report gives the impression that the service tower was withdrawn prior to filling of second stage.

Nanha mujaahids., please to check out the launch configuration - particularly the satellite mating to the adapter.

After watching and learning from above., wait for the news on how precisely the sats were injected into orbit. It has important implications.

We have already done such multiple mating and release. It of course has important repurcussions but that part has been mastered. The only thing is compact tight packing and that may havv been already done;.

One question , how are 3 satellites in LEO spaced 120 deg apart able to provide pan earth monitoring ? I thought for near complete observation we need to keep it at GSO orbit and even there we will not be able to see extreme polar regions needing additional polar /sun synchronous orbits or Molniya orbits.

Also, we do not know for sure, how much, if any "cross pollination" exists, between the two organizations.

launch is at 9:58 PM IST today.

ISRO had to design and build a new triangular payload bus to house the 3 smaller satellites...i think its a 2-storey arrangement.

Chrome is going to phase out some plug in settings that is causing the problems. You have to enable some settings and then VLC plugin will work.
