Making of an Indian Army Soldier

A soldier whose discipline, dedication to duty, loyalty and ferocious fighting spirit is remembered with awe by all who have had to face the blood-curdling battle cry of Ayo Gorkhali – The Gorkhas have arrived!
Read in full
The shameless Ameer Khans and Britishers recruit a lot of gorkha people for their own gorkha regiments. They shamelessly put the folks in the frontline of duty to save their a$$es. They come every few months with $$ and try to get as many people as possible to fight their dirty wars. I hope it stops and they get their a$$es out of India and the gorkha people don't get fooled by some silly $$.

America doesn't have a Gorkha regiment by name. Anyways that's not important, whats important was they trying to recruit from India and getting their dirty work done by showing some $$ and fooling the poor people of north east.

Has the Chief disgraced the army?

Worst-ever interview by Vishnu Som, full of leading questions and an absolutely wrong title.

Some of his questions and comments :-
Is he willing to quit? Isn't there more honor in quitting and then appealing than appealing while sitting in office? He is the Army Chief, he has important things to do?
The army chief will retire at end of May, right? Well, he will. So whether you call it an order or not, he has to do that because he's not welcome to be in office after that.
Its a fight for dignity and honor - its obviously a fight for personal dignity and personal honor. It is being seen as a case of self before service - that's exactly what you're not supposed to be doing in the Armed Forces.
Abhorrent. Shameful. Hope he reads this.

I saw that interview yesterday and it is not worst, but yes it can be better .... in that interview it seem like media is more keen for General to step down.
Any Indian citizen including common man or General has right to raise his voice against system and go to court if he/she think that they don't get what they deserve. The case still in court and let court make its decision.Take it as a professional move and no point of making it as moral and other thing .I think Our Army is more sensible and discipline than other armies.

^^^nash, It is a matter of Honor and Dignity.
The Chief has been openly called a liar and all sort of names, there has been a smear campaign against him in media and all the usual media scums have been employed to fight a proxy war against him. It is but expected of him, more so from the men he commands, that he set the record straight. It is as much a matter of Honor and Dignity of the men he commands as it is his. The past couple of COAS have left much to be desired. The IA needs a man at the helm in whom the men believe. And believe him to be a true leader.

As i said let the court decide on this and wait for the verdict. By that time we can hold ourselves to make further comments on this because it can become more uglier.

Excerpts from the latest article on VKS in India Today by Unnithan.
Taken from a link on Livefist Blog:(http://livefist.blogspot.com/2012/01/sc ... -army.html)
Over the past year, General Singh's energies have been consumed
by the raging birth date controversy. There are concerns that he
may have neglected his job. A December 2011 cag report rapped
the Government and the Army for not acquiring modern artillery
guns for over two decades and forcing troops to rely on "obsolete
1970s vintage guns".

The campaign to restore his birth date flies in the face of the
Chetwode credo, instilled in every IMA cadet, of 'service before
self'; this is why General Singh has used another powerful Army credo, personal honour, to mask it. He
has used, say his detractors, selective media leaks, waged a sly parochial campaign and tacitly moved to
enlist political support. None of these allegations can be traced directly to the Army chief. MOD officials,
however, say the circumstantial evidence for a motivated campaign is overwhelming.
And we have had people on BRF talking about "objectivity" on part of Unnithan!!!! ack thoo...

So now Unnithan is saying that the current Chief deliberately didn't get artillery guns? Ok fair is fair I guess - let's examine the actions of the previous two chiefs and also the current GoI and the previous one. Now did the current and previous GoI's make every effort to get the guns overruling the chiefs? Or did the previous two chiefs make every effort to get the guns by pushing it through GoI? I think the answer will be very clear for those who want to see it.

Is it correct to hold him alone responsible, not his owners and editors and political forces backing them. Offcourse if Stan asks I have no proof which will hold in court but GOI motives and logic would suggest no editor or media allows in such articles that a contranian view from theirs get published.

Its a simple choice toe the line or be done with your job.

media matters sevanti ninan
The Hindu declined to publish this column
Consolidation has begun. One by one, India’s original TV entrepreneurs who grew at an impressive pace, are being bailed out by big business. Financial unviability is today the chief hallmark of the TV news business which is tottering, even as it grabs eyeballs and mind space, says SEVANTI NINAN
A few days later a Reliance spokesperson denied that the company was interested in buying a stake in TV firm Network 18.
But there are other angles to the story which others have been reporting last month. Namely, that Raghav Bahl was in talks for a share swap with ETV for a stake in its regional channels bouquet. Why is that significant? Because Mukesh Ambani has already been indirectly linked to an investment in ETV through his associate Nimesh Kampani, something that the media in Andhra Pradesh has been energetically reporting on through November-December, particularly Jagan Reddy’s Sakshi.
Meanwhile an unconfirmed newspaper reports linked NDTV too to Reliance, something which the company responded to by sueing the newspaper which had suggested it.
Both Raghav Bahl and Prannoy Roy’s companies have seen losses piling up and investors coming in, and Ramoji Rao with his huge media empire in Andhra Pradesh has been looking for investments to keep the empire going. Meanwhile the big media conglomerates like Star and Zee have been steadily acquiring regional media properties across the country for some years now, in Tamilnadu, West Bengal, Gujarat, and elsewhere. One by one, Vijay TV and Asianet were acquired by Star, while Zee has invested in news channels Chobbish Ganta and Akash Bangla in West Bengal.
Rajat Sharma who owns India TV and was one of the original television entrepreneurs in the 80s-90s, is an exception to the current vulnerability, having received helpful investments early on which helped to consolidate the channel's position.

I think what som asked and even what Sandeep said are the the "right way" or correct way things should be. The argument of personnal H&D flies on the face of him achieving the highest office and so many other medals/decorations. Govt should be able to ask any of the armed officer to resign at its pleasure without any explanation and recource. Civilian control over armed forces by elected govt is paramount and unquestionable on the grounds of personal or institutional H&D.

But I am firmly on the General's camp and for me (don't forget you who called him, lifafa) Ajai Shukla nailed it on the head. Armed forces can be held to such an high standard of conduct and disciplin only if others also give them their due respect, share and space. This is not fight for personal H&D, its fight to set an exmple for /of MoD that don't expect forces to take any and all orders/insults without any questions. If he should step down so should the defence secratary and even the Defence minister. In dealing with an institution of such high values, diginity and diciplin MoD babaus have to exhibit similar conduct or face the music of might of armed forces usually reserved for enemies.

Go General Singh, teach 'em a lesson that coming generation of MoD babaus will remeber for a long time to come. Dare them to touch you......you ain't no Bhagwat or Thimmaiah, nation will come out in your support just as it came out for Anna

Also, as far as I know and think of , an officer's DoB has no weightage on any of the promotions and postings which are strictly a function of seniority and merit. So what is this argument that is flying around from MoD wallahs that he got last 2 promotions based on a certain DoB? How DoB comes into picture in any of this except for retirement and succession.

In all this we should not forgewt that we are fornunate enough to have a situation where COAS, DM and PM whose honesty and integrity is equally unquestionable. To me its a battle of changing establishment mindset and shake those official priests of MoD hiding in deep dark caves of south block that control everything with their slow moving files and file notings

There must surely be disappointment from both side. One side would feel that despite giving variety of "privileges" and access and manipulative means to select yellows, dyansty's and the UPAs media image could not be 'managed' more effectively and bad news got out too often....on the other side too there is probably disgust over being used as useful idiots whenever a 'secular' bone or piece of meat is thrown their way, and not allow Stalinists to be in driving seats to drive UPA2 more towards a 'friendly' pro-Beijing stance..

Sad all the efforts put in by Khare in his years in Chindu and the solid propaganda efforts were not taken into consideration...

Never mind..he can join Xinhua or People's Daily and have a glorious career ahead of him....unless his ex CPM mouthpiece wants him back for resuming his good work..but that is doubtful since a new team is doing a great job that both Karat and his boss would offer a red salute for..

Major shake up in Chindu

Varadarajan appointed Hindu Editor, N Ravi, Parthasarathy put in papers
N Ravi, Editor of The Hindu, stepped down on Wednesday, along with Executive Editor Malini Parthasarathy and Joint Editor Nirmala Lakshman, after the board of directors of Kasturi and Sons, which brings out the newspaper, passed a resolution appointing Siddharth Varadarajan as the Editor.

Varadarajan is the Delhi Bureau Chief of The Hindu and will take over as the Editor on July 30 as per the decision taken by the board on Wednesday.

Seven board members voted in favour of the resolution and five against it.

N Murali, Senior Managing Director of the company, announced that he would retire on August 11 when he turns 65. He pointed out at the meeting that if his eldest brother N Ram, the current Editor-in-Chief of the group, had stood by his commitment made on September 25, 2009, he should have retired on May 4, 2010.

Ravi, Parthasarathy and Lakshman resigned saying it was not possible for them to continue after the appointment of an Editor who was not only far too junior to them but also appointed in an “unseemly hurry” without following any selection procedure, prior consultation or evaluation.

In his resignation letter, Ravi said Varadarajan’s name was announced the first time at a board meeting and passed without any discussion within a few minutes. “In other words, the start of the so- called professionalisation process has itself been carried out in a wholly arbitrary, non-professional way,” he wrote.

The board, whose members are part of the extended family of founder Kasturi Ranga Iyengar, has been involved in a long and intense fight for editorial control of the publications owned by the company. In April this year, a majority of the board members had supported a proposal that all editorial directors belonging to the family must step down in favour of a professional editor who could appoint his own team and independently run the publications while the family members constitute an editorial board to advise these professionals from outside.

A faction of the board opposed the move alleging that in the guise of professionalising the editorial functions, the proposal meant to block the chances of any family member getting the editorial control after Ram stepped down as the Editor-in-Chief. This faction led by Ram’s brothers Murali and Ravi moved the Company Law Board (CLB) in Chennai, which stayed the appointment of Varadarajan and decided to hear the case in August. The faction led by Ram challenged the CLB order in Madras High Court which overturned the CLB stay order. Ram’s opponents challenged this in the Supreme Court, which refused to interfere in the case and asked the CLB to hasten the process of hearing in the case without being influenced by the HC.

“The CLB will begin hearing the case on August 8 and it will finally decide whether the resolution passed in the board meeting today will prevail or not,” said Ravi.
Sv is their idea of a professional editor. :rotfl:

@Hindu,
There is no need to be particularly sad about the changes in the Hindu Editorial board. The current board was not that impressive and was colored in same prejudices as N Ram (only the technical news reporting was good, anything to do with politics/ideology/etc was no different from SV bilge). Siddharth Varadarajan might be the Aurangzeb of Hindu newspaper.
