What happens to folks from the North-east (Arunachal) and J&K. Will they get a regular visa for the Asian Games. If not, will India pull out altogether from the Asian games ?

4 Kazakhstan (KAZ) 23 20 42 85
5 Thailand (THA) 13 15 26 54
6 Iran (IRI) 11 15 22 48
7 Uzbekistan (UZB) 11 14 15 40

these folks have 230 medals between them. with minuscule populations smaller than NCR, its kind of amazing that uzbekistan and kazakhstan snagged so many medals!
afaik elene yesinbaeva represents kazakhstan and there must be a modification of the old soviet sporting 'system' left behind and still somehow functioning in these places along with good number of soviet era immigrants.

If they are not allowed in, for China's perverted reasons, then yes, the entire Indian contingent should boycott the games.

why

I guess its good move if we do not participate, in cricket without India there is no Money in Asiad, bangladesh, Paki and Sri cannot pull any money. They want to make money on our cost then it should be in our terms No

Hoprfully we'll do much better than our last Asian games campaign where we finished 7th. 4th seems like a reasonable assmption after China, Korea and the Japs.

Also, I'm gonna make a prediction now that the CWG would be brought up by the western main stream media. Psy-ops ahoy!

"Also, I'm gonna make a prediction now that the CWG would be brought up by the western main stream media. Psy-ops ahoy!"

Wouldn't surprise me. For many years now, there has been a kind of mental alliance between dishonourable elements in the Western media, more broadly dishonourable individuals in the West, and China. If one notices, the more honourable, articulate, deep thinking types in the Western media, and among Western individuals, won't indulge in such excercises. They are able to appreciate the good qualities of a country like India, and take a more holistic view. What China and its supportive drones like, is crude propaganda that boosts China, and puts another country, in this case India, down. China and deep thinking don't go together, neither for itself, nor its acolytes internationally.

we should expect a highly efficient show from the hosts
we should expect a scathing comparitive criticism from the media
we should expect a much reduced medal tally
but we should also expect an average increase in our performance and stature

ruthlessly efficient at other things as well - targets to meet, bonuses to get...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... ds-newsxml

An eight-months pregnant woman was dragged from her home and forced to have an abortion because she had broken China’s one-child-per-family law.

Twelve government officials entered Xiao Aiying’s house where they hit and kicked her in the stomach, before taking her kicking and screaming to hospital.

There, the 36-year-old was restrained as doctors injected her with a drug to kill the unborn baby.

Her husband Luo Yanquan, a construction worker, yesterday described the moment officials burst into his family home.

‘They held her hands behind her back and pushed her head against the wall and kicked her in the stomach,’ he said. ‘I don’t know if they were trying to give her a miscarriage.

‘Our ten-year-old daughter has been excited about having a little brother or sister but I don’t know how I can explain to her what has happened.’
He recalled how a month before the child was due to be born officials told the couple they weren’t allowed to have another baby because they already have a daughter.

His wife, who was filmed in hospital with large bruises on her arms and her dead child still inside her, said: ‘I have had this baby, feeling it moving around and around my belly. Can you imagine how I feel now.’

Her harrowing experience in Siming, near the city of Xiamen, south-west China, on October 10, comes a month after the government in Beijing said there would be no relaxation in strict family planning laws.

Most Chinese families are allowed only one child to reduce the 1.3 billion-plus population and cut unsustainable demand on resources.

The policy leads to an estimated 13 million abortions every year, with many of those ordered by local authorities. Infanticide is also widespread in many rural areas.

Those who violate the one child law can be fined up to £25,000.
But two decades of economic boom mean many middle class parents now earn enough to pay the fine to expand their family.

For those without cash and connections like the Luos, gruesome summary justice is meted out.

Forced abortions are banned under Chinese law, but this doesn’t prohibit or define late-term abortions.

An official with the Siming district family planning commission said the procedure on Mrs Luo was undertaken voluntarily and that Mr Luo had approved it - a claim he denies.

The couple fear official retribution after making their ordeal public on a blog.

Ordinary Chinese have expressed disgust at the Luos’ ordeal, labelling the family planning officials ‘cruel’ and ‘inhuman’.

I am afraid India might not perform very well in these Asian games. Paes, Bhupathi, Devvarman, Vishwanathan Anand, Humpy, Sushil Kumar and the cricket team are not playing. We are not going to punch to our weight in these games.

Asian Games preparatory efforts
article 2
Foreigners attending the Asiad in the southern Chinese city could have trouble finding their way as organisers have used the Roman spelling of Mandarin words on some signs instead of English, state media said Thursday.

In the subway, one sign reads "Towards Jichang", the Global Times said. "Jichang" means airport.

Some slogans encouraging citizens to embrace the games have also been badly translated, the report said.

A banner that reads "Speaking civilisation, ying Asian Games," should read "Be a civilised citizen, support the Asian Games."

China has launched several campaigns in recent years to try to root out poor grammar and misused vocabulary in official usage.

The most famous of these drives took place in Beijing prior to the 2008 Olympic Games. During that time, authorities rechristened the Dongda Anus Hospital as the Dongda Proctology Hospital.

Residents have expressed concern that corners are being cut in preparation work for the Games, not just in the translation of signage, the report said.

One unfinished building has been covered in paper that looks like bricks, while a pedestrian lane for the visually impaired has not been made with special raised plastic but painted, the report said.

And as for the weather, well, China is taking no chances on rain delays. Local officials are planning to send cloud dispersing rockets as well as five actual planes to disperse rain clouds, reports Xinhua. The same measures were used during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and were successful.

Guangzhou Counts Down To Games
http://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/g ... 61308.html
"There are tight security controls all around the site of the opening ceremony, and at all the facilities being used by the Games," a Guangzhou resident surnamed Fang said.

"There are a lot [of police]," she said. "They are checking people's identification, and checking the bags and items they are carrying with them."

She said police were also carrying out regular sweeps of ordinary citizens' apartments as part of security measures ahead of the Games, officially known as Asiad.

"The place where we live is being checked once a month," Fang said. "Anyone whose apartment has a view of the opening ceremony will not be allowed to remain at home that day."
Last week, the municipal government was forced to withdraw a pledge of free public transportation for all after traffic was brought to a standstill as buses and subway trains were overloaded.

Guangzhou-based writer Ye Du said the government was out of touch with reality.

"After a week of total chaos, they've been forced to make this change in the face of strong public opposition," Ye said.
Guangzhou officials said recently that the municipal government has spent around 120 billion yuan (U.S. $18 billion) on hosting the Games, not including the investment required to build the facilities.

A third Guangzhou resident said people were wondering what benefits such a huge outlay would bring them.

"It's best not to ask such things," he said. "It only gets me angry. I don't have the energy to think about it."

Other residents said Guangzhou was looking smarter, but that the city's face lift had come at a high price for its residents.

"Guangzhou looks beautiful right now," a fourth resident said. "But we have been put through unspeakable misery in the past two years."

Residents near the main roads leading to key venues have complained of being forced to pay for "improvements" to their buildings which later turned out to be constructed of wood and cloth, like movie scenery. :rotfl:

And another resident said that the authorities had painted an unfinished road black, to disguise the fact that construction teams had run out of time to lay the asphalt surface.

Uhhh, I think this thread is shifting away from its initial theme of discussing India's chances at the Games and talking about our athletes. Well, at least my understanding was that.

Since its China related, eventually other issues (;)) will creep in here, but lets not lose sight of the fact that this thread is about our athletes first.

Welcome to silence in Guangzhou
The city of Guangzhou has been preparing for the Asian Games quite efficiently, putting manpower and resources to appropriate use, looking for perfection at every turn and moving forward on the strength of clear vision.

However, as you land in the beautiful city and drive through the tunnel in the mountain on the expressway, with the bus driver effortlessly touching 110 kilometres per hour, one thing that you notice is the silence all around.

Guangzhou is quiet. The roads are empty.

Maybe, it has been so, because it is early morning. But as you criss-cross the place through the day, easily covering a couple of hundreds of kilometres, attempting to figure out the venues and the facilities, there is no difference in the external life. There is pronounced silence.

There is hardly any trace of life, though the city has been breathing life with its greenery, long stretches of colourful flower beds, nicely laid out apartment buildings all around, and the Pearl River flowing with a majestic grace.

You get to see people only when you reach the venues readying for the Games, and most of them are the energetic young volunteers. The venues themselves are quite breathtaking and absolutely world class.

After two losses a win for India, beat Singapore! Didn't expect them to beat Singapore...

India seal knockout berth in Asian Games football
India qualified for the knockout stage of the Asian Games football competition for the first time since 1982 after outplaying Singapore 4-1 in Guangzhou, on Thursday.

India fired three quick goals in the second half to register their first win in the tournament which helped them finish third in Group D with three points.

India made it to the round of 16 on better goal difference. In 2002 and 2006, they had missed out on the knockout rounds on goal difference.

In another match, defending champions Qatar beat Kuwait 2-0 to top Group D with seven points from two wins and a draw. Kuwait finished second in the group with six points from two wins.

Jewel Raja (13th), Balwant Singh (62nd), Khagembam Jibon Singh (67th) and Maithani (75th) scored for India while Lou Zhenlun reduced the margin for Singapore in the 83rd minute.

Indian media has already started the comparison between the two games, starting with the Opening ceremony itself. Damn idiots.

Meanwhile, Saina's won her first match. Arvind Bhat lost in the mens team event. When I left for work this morning at 8:45 IST, P Kashyap was playing against Taiwan (oh, I mean Chinese Teipei!)

I saw end of opening ceremony. seemed to have a sinister apokolips/mordorish tinge to it -

the huge flame tower - from the fires of Mt Doom itself
the explosive packed fireworks tower - barad dur/eisengaard
the sinister looking looming silent skyscrapers in the background .... out of stephen king vision/sci fi vision of a bleak technocratic future where the Overlords live in their dark towers and the underlings work in a underground racoon city
they did not show any audience in the stands, infact I couldnt see any stands in the looming darkness
the 8 huge propaganda type TV boards beaming 24x7 from the MIB dugout.
the lines of carefully selected smiling girls all of whom looked cloned from a single template

I was left somewhat scared and shaken by it.

all that was missing was a 100 ft black obsidian stone statue of DarkSeid to bless the proceedings.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bdVR-JIDi2g/S ... kseid.jpeg

how apt, since guangzhou was where it all began and PRC became the forges of apokolips of our planet...
