The air engagement would have long become decisive before it comes down to the option to wield the gun. In Indian context pehaps it will be some time before it becomes irrelevent.

The Gun IMHO is a *essential* weapon for all strike aircraft. By strike aircraft I dont mean the kind which drop JDAMs from high altitude and run back, but the kind of doctrine the IAF follows; go in at deck level with unguided munitions. Lets not forget that even the big SU and F-22 retain guns.

As late as Op Safedsagar aircraft were firing their guns in ground attack - though this led to a loss of one aircraft.

The only argument that favours the weight advantage received is that the IAF never intends to fly the two-seater Jaguar in a 'conventional' strike mission - only for precision strike (the DARIN II upgrades support this theory).

Welcome to download (free) the Large size formats for desktop backgrounds etc.. - Pls ignore the "Buy Print" option. There are some errors in the remarks fields as to model numbers. Corrections have been sent in.

Cheers,

Ken

P.S> BTW if any one is planning a visit to the beautiful northwest here in Canada, would love to hear from you. The largest airshow in Western Canada is located not too far from here at Abbotsford, BC. Held in the month of August.

Thanks Arun. Should the general public across the globe, trip over the airliners site and by mistake :-) purchase a print, I would be pleased to donate all the proceeds to BR for site maintenance.

Cheers,

Ken

Thanks for your feedback Sudhir & Srai,

Most of the pictures were taken with a Panasonic DMZ FZ20, and some with a Nikon FE2 (75-300mm Nikon zoom lens). Unfortunately, either due to development chemistry problems or a a bad batch of film, the 35mm snaps turned out very poor.

Ken

P.S. I guess I will have to make another trip over to Bangalore in a few years huh! :-;

It's finally done!

With the upload of the last 3 chapters, the 24 page (362 pic) AI-2005 photomarathon is finally over!

Older pages updated as well, with new info on stuff like the LCA's voice recognition system, MMR weight, pilot names etc.

http://www.acig.org/exclusives/aero/Aero_India.htm

In addition, I've also extensively updated the Naval aviation pages with new pics (SV-2000 on Ka-25, Intercepts), more info on the SV-2000, corrections, attrition info etc

Close up of the APU-170E pylon interface on the Su-30MKI. A maximum of ten R-77s may be carried on the Su-30MKI.

There is a minor nitpick about the last image:

When the RVV-AE is attached to the underwing hardpoint it uses the APU-170 (as shown) but when it goes under the air intakes and the center line it uses the AKU-170 (a.k.a APU/AKU-RVV-AE adapters). So all 10 aint using the same adapters.

Also is the wingtip adapter for an R-73? APU-73 for the R-73 is for the 2 outermost underwing hardpoint and not the wingtip. I couldnt find the name for the wingtip adapter, its always been referred to as 'wingtip adapter for R-73'. But its very specific to R-73, you dont hang Gardenya/Sorbitsuya ECM of them.

Same applies to the APU/AKU-470 adapters for the R-27E/R and APU/AKU-58 for the Kh-25/29/31/59 (differs by weight and seeker).
