Friends asked him to skip his day in Delhi High Court to celebrate their classmate's birthday but 21-year-old Amanpreet Singh, interning there, did not budge and had to pay with his life.

Singh, a first-year LLB student, was interning at High Court and died in the blast outside the court complex this morning.

An 87-year-old man was the oldest among the 11 killed in the bomb blast in the Delhi High Court this morning which also claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman.

The youngest among the victims was 21-year-old Amanpreet from Guru Nanakpura in south-west Delhi.

Nizamuddin (87), who resided in Daryaganj, was the oldest among those killed in the blast that rocked the High Court at 10:14 am while Nalini Aggarwal from Vasant Vihar was the lone woman victim among the 11.

Another octagenarian among the victims was Inderpal Singh Anand (80), who resided in Geeta Colony in east Delhi.

The other victims were Darshan Lal Jain (75) from Shalcti Nagar, Harish Dutt Joshi (68) from Naraina, Pawan Bansal (62) from Gurgaon, Mehtab Singh Dabas (57) from Ghewra village, Ashok Kumar Sharma (55) from Palam, Vinod Jeswal (54) from Sarai Rohilla and Veerpal (52) from Gandhi Nagar.

He travelled a long way from Tuticorin, a port town in the country's southern tip, to the national capital on official duty, but destiny took him even farther away.

P. Pathiran, 57, Superintending Engineer with the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, succumbed on Thursday night to critical injuries he suffered in the bomb blast at the Delhi High Court on Wednesday.

The nodal officer in the Port Trust for projects on Public Private Partnership mode, Pathiran had gone to the High Court to file a reply on behalf of the port to a petition questioning the PPP policy. As ill-luck would have it, he was waiting in a queue to get an entry pass when the bomb went off. He was among the 13 persons killed in the explosion.

A 34-year-old victim of the Delhi High Court blast succumbed to injuries at a hospital here this morning, taking the toll in the terror attack to 14.

Mridul Bakshi, who was seriously injured in the blast on September 7, died around 4 AM, doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital said.

Doctors said Bakshi had suffered multiple injuries on his head, chest, hands and legs.
Mridul, a resident of Okhla in south Delhi, is survived by wife and a six-month-old son.
His brother Vinod Bakshi said that Mridul, who was working in the marketing field, had gone to the High Court on that fateful day for some official work. Mridul was blessed with a child after six years of marriage.

The blast which took place outside the Delhi high court on September 7 has claimed another life, taking the toll up to 15. Seventy-six people had been injured in the blast.

Rattan Lal Shroff, 64, a resident of Delhi's Model Town, died at the Trauma Centre of Ram Manohar Lohia hospital on Saturday.
Shroff had been severely injured. Both his legs had to be amputated and he underwent several operations on his chest over the last 10 days.

His condition deteriorated since Tuesday after he developed infection in his lungs.

Despite putting him on strong antibiotics, the doctors could not stop the infection from spreading.

"He went into septic shock, which eventually caused his death," said one of the doctors attending on him.

MUMBAI: The toll in the July 13 Mumbai triple blasts climbed to 27 with one more injured succumbing here Thursday evening, an official said.
The victim has been identified as Prashant H. Joshi, 34, and he breathed his last around 2.50 p.m., at Sir JJ Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for the past two months, the hospital dean TP Lahane said.

Four days after the third anniversary of the terror attacks on Mumbai, six suspected Indian Mujahideen operatives, including a Pakistani national, were arrested from across the country for their alleged involvement in several blast cases, including in Delhi. With these arrests, investigators claimed to have solved several blast cases, including the German Bakery case in Pune, the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast in Bangalore and the Jama Masjid shooting case.

But that’s hardly any consolation to the victims of terrorism — the injured as well as the kin of those killed — as they struggle through their forever changed lives. Snehlata Choudhary is one of them. A 26/11 widow, she’s at her wits end to decide what’s worse – losing her husband or doing the rounds of the Secretariat in the hope of getting a promised petrol pump dealership. Her husband Murlidhar Chowdhary was a Railway Protection Force jawan posted at Mumbai CST and died a martyr in the carnage. “Time has not healed my wounds. It still feels like yesterday when I called my husband to inquire what was delaying him. His colleague answered the phone to tell me he had been killed,” Snehlata remembers.

Thirty-seven year old Rakesh Chavan, a private security guard who was shot at by a terrorist while accompanying NSG commandos as they cleared the Taj Hotel, regrets he can’t play cricket anymore because of the limp in his leg. He still harbours the hope that he would be reabsorbed in the Taj Hotel security detail in recognition of his services rendered.

In Orissa’s Balasore, Satyananda Behera of Chalisimedha village sits idle. He has no choice; he can’t even stand. Satyananda is the only victim from Orissa who received bullet injuries during the 26/11 attacks. He then was working at a small restaurant near the Victoria Terminus (VT) railway station and had a regular income, most of which he sent home. A handicapped Satyananda now struggles hard to eke out a living and manage his four-member family. Despite the tall claims of the Centre and the Maharashtra government he is yet to get the full compensation amount and a job assured to him. “I had received a letter from the Home Ministry to get a compensation of `3 lakh. But so far I have got only `50,000 each from the Railway Ministry and Maharashtra government. A job in the railway department is still a distant dream,” he says.

Not far away, in the satellite town of Navi Mumbai, Ganpat Anap keeps a brand new shirt in its original package in remembrance of his son Atul who died of injuries sustained in Pune’s German Bakery blast of February 13, 2010. For Anap, a former World Bank consultant, the shirt that his son purchased on the same day is one of the cherished memories of his son. “After making the purchase, Atul rang at about 2.30 in the afternoon and told me about the shirt,” says Anap. Atul, a telecom engineer, a brilliant student and accomplished sportsperson, was loved by all. “We retrieved their car that was parked near German Bakery and I found the shirt he had bought for me,” says Anap.

Further north, in Varanasi, 25-year-old Darakhta Anjum continues to grieve the loss of her husband Kamaruzzama in the Varanasi blasts of November 23, 2007 which killed nine per sons. “I can only wail against my fate,” says Anjum. She tried picking up the threads of her life that was shattered by the blast, getting married again. It did not work, and she’s back with her father now. Except for monetary compensation from the state and Central governments, none of the promises made to Anjum have been kept. “The state government had announced that Anjum would get a house in Varanasi. But later on, they put a condition that if Anjum would remarry the house would not be given,” says Anees, Anjum’s father, who has retired from a Class IV government job.

In the deep south, memories of Coimbatore’s serial blasts that killed 46 and injured 200 at 11 locations across the city on February 14, 1998 may have gone cold, but for the unfortunate victims the nightmare doesn’t end. K Ganesh miraculously survived a powerful explosion that went off hardly 20m from him in the textile shop where he was working as a salesman. He carries the memories of the blast in more than just his mind. Doctors have been unable to completely remove the hundreds of iron nails that pierced his body. “They took out a bowl full of iron nails from my body soon after the incident. But they told me it is impossible to remove all of them,” says Ganesh. He has to gobble nearly six tablets everyday to kill the pain and to make sure the infection does not spread. “I don’t even remember how many times my body has been operated upon since the blasts,” says Ganesh.

In Hyderabad, where 42 persons died in two near-simultaneous blasts on August 25, 2007, Asadullah Khan breaks down as he remembers the death of his son Akramullah. Minutes before he fell victim to the blast at Gokul Chat Bhandar, 21-year-old Akramullah had called his mother Jilani Begum to know if she wanted something from the eatery. Akram was accompanying two of his five sisters as they bought books. He left them in an auto to step into the shop, only to die. Akram was devoted to his family and as his father was suffering from high blood pressure, he managed the house. “He was a gem,” says Asadullah.

MHA: Most terror cases have been solved
Under attack by the Opposition over investigations into terror cases, the home ministry tried to put the record straight on Thursday by claiming that 'almost all major terror cases' had been solved.

The BJP had alleged no terror cases have been solved by the investigating agencies in the last eight years.

The ministry said in its statement that more arrests were expected in the terror cases allegedly involving the right wing extremists.

"The National investigation Agency (NIA) has recently arrested Kamal Chouhan and it is expected that more arrests will be made leading to the solving of these cases," the statement said.

The ministry, however, accepted that three terror cases - the 2008 Mehrauli blast, 2006 Jama Masjid blasts in Delhi, and the 2010 Varanasi blast - remain unsolved so far.

Giving an overall picture of the terror cases investigation, the ministry statement said: "Since May, 2000 there have been 46 major terrorist incidents. Of these, all but 7 cases have been solved. In 9 cases, convictions have been obtained. Of the remaining 30 cases, chargesheets have been filed in 29 and trial has commenced in 19 cases. Two cases ended in acquittals."

Meanwhile, the deceased CRPF personnel have been identified as Assistant Sub Inspector A B Singh, constables Om Prakash, L Parmol, Subhash and Satish Shah. The injured personnel included Sub Inspector Ashok Kumar, constables Jeevan Kishore, A R Parveen, T Bharatbhai, G Yadesh and Ram Prasad.

After a being comatose and in a vegetative state for seven years, Amit Singh died last evening. He died on May 2, but terrorists had taken his life that July evening when the bomb they had planted on the local train he was travelling on inflicted such severe head injuries that he could never speak, walk, eat, laugh again.

"Chottu, how much do you sleep? Look at mummy. Ok, loosen your knees beta, listen to mummy. Very good, loosen it a little more, so that mummy can massage it. You need to have strong bones, how else will my beta walk..."

Meena Singh's voice drifts through the corridor as she talks to her son as if he was a toddler again. Her meeting a few hours ago with Dr R D Nagpal, the neurosurgeon who has been Amit's doctor, had brought little hope but her voice does not betray those feelings.

She talks to him with excitement, urging him to make contact with her eyes, cajoling him to loosen his taught limbs, her eyes bright, her voice breaking into a laugh, in the hope that something -- anything -- would make her son respond to her.

Her belief that Amit will rise again and walk out of the hospital is rock solid. And she speaks about it with a certainty and a faith that only a mother can have.
