Pakistani pleads guilty in key Guantanamo case
Updated 1 hour ago
GUANTANAMO BAY: Pakistani national Majid Khan pleaded guilty Wednesday at a Guantanamo military tribunal in a landmark case that could speed the trials of September 11 suspects.

Majid Khan, 32, a protege of September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, pleaded guilty to conspiracy, murder and attempted murder in violation of the laws of war, and to material support for terrorism and espionage.

Dressed in a dark suit and pink tie, he spoke in English without an interpreter in delivering his plea.

Khan, who has spent the last nine years behind bars, faced possible life in prison but is expected to receive a reduced sentence as part of a plea agreement.

In exchange for the lighter sentence, he will testify against other "high value" detainees, including Mohammed and four others alleged to have taken part in the 2001 attacks.

Many of the terms of the plea agreement remain classified.

"It's part of a strategy of building more solid cases against the handful of defendants that the government plans to try before the commissions," said Jonathan Hafetz, a lawyer who has represented other Guantanamo detainees.

More than 10 years after the September 11 attacks, Mohammed and four co-defendants accused of plotting them are still awaiting trial at the prison
, part of a US naval base in Cuba. (AFP)

Our descent into chaos
Wednesday, February 29, 2012
Just when you think our situation couldn’t possibly get worse, the United States manages to get it down another notch. First, it was the totally unprovoked attack on the Salala check post resulting in the killing of more than 24 jawans of the Pakistan Army. Now it is the highly inflammatory and provocative call by US Representative Dana Rohrabacher for the secession of Balochistan. It is a harbinger of covert US plans for the dismemberment and balkanisation of Pakistan.

The current crisis in Balochistan, triggered by General Musharraf, has a long history. In a television interview on January 4, General Musharraf issued a stern warning to the Baloch nationalists. “Don’t push us. It is not the 70s, when you can hit and run, and hide in the mountains”, he said, alluding to the military operation to quell the insurgency in Balochistan in the 1970s. “This time, you won’t even know what hit you”. “Oh God”! I said to myself. “Not again”. Unfortunately, generals do not learn from history because they do not read history. They make history.

The crisis in Balochistan is a throwback to the 1970 insurgency that resulted from Bhutto’s dismissal of the National Awami Party government and the detention, on conspiracy charges, of 55 nationalist politicians and student leaders. Nearly three divisions were deployed to crush the insurgency and restore normalcy in that troubled province.

On July 5, 1977, the Bhutto government was toppled in a military coup led by General Zia, I was asked to take over as secretary ministry of interior. Within days, I met General Zia in the GHQ in the presence of Ghulam Ishaq Khan, secretary general-in-chief. The Hyderabad Conspiracy case came up for discussion. Mr Bhutto had earlier banned the National Awami Party.

Top Pakhtun and Baloch leaders were arrested and detained in Hyderabad jail and put on trial under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Special Courts Act of 1976. The government was in a state of armed confrontation with the people of Balochistan. The army had been deployed to crush what was officially described as an insurgency. Both sides had suffered heavy casualties.

Ghulam Ishaq Khan told General Zia that Bhutto had launched the army operation in Balochistan, not because there was an insurgency, but because he could not reconcile himself to a non-PPP government in Balochistan, which he had sacked without any justification whatsoever.

He told General Zia that Bhutto was using the army to punish his political opponents and advised him to call off the operation, drop the conspiracy case, release the Baloch and Pakhtun leaders and defuse the situation. We assured Zia that he would never regret this decision. He said he agreed with us but would have to discuss the matter with his colleagues.

When we met him again, he told us that his colleagues did not agree. We pressed him again to ask his colleagues to reconsider the matter dispassionately. This time Zia had better luck. He had secured their agreement. He went to Hyderabad, met all the Baloch and Pakhtun leaders in jail, and had lunch with them. He called off the army operation, dropped the Hyderabad Conspiracy case and what is more, sent Ataullah Mengal, a heart patient, to the United States for medical treatment. All this had a dramatic effect. In no time, the situation returned to normal. All military operations in Balochistan were ended and troops were withdrawn; a general amnesty was granted to all those who had taken up arms against the government; all sentences were remitted; properties confiscated were returned to their owners. With one masterly stroke, Zia defused the situation. For eight long years, Balochistan gave us no trouble.

The use of force against the people did not succeed in East Pakistan and led to tragic consequences. How can it succeed in Balochistan? Why use force to resolve what is essentially a political problem? That is what happened to us in East Pakistan. Why repeat the same mistakes in Balochistan?

We lost our independence and sovereignty on General Musharraf’s watch when he capitulated, said yes to all the seven demands presented to him, as an ultimatum, by Colin Powell, the then US secretary of state. No self-respecting, sovereign of an independent country, no matter how small or weak, could have accepted such humiliating demands with such alacrity. General Musharraf executed a U-turn, disowned the Taliban and promised “unstinted” cooperation to President Bush in his war against Afghanistan.

Pakistan joined the “coalition of the coerced”. There were no cheering crowds in the streets of Pakistan to applaud Musharraf’s decision to facilitate American bombing of Afghanistan from US bases on Pakistan soil. Musharraf had to choose between saying no to the American diktat and shame. He chose the latter and opted for collaboration. Thus began Pakistan’s slide into disaster.

Is it, therefore, surprising that the American footprint in our country is growing larger and heavier by the day? Nuclear Pakistan is now an American colony and is used as a doormat. American military personnel criss-cross our border without let or hindrance. Their drones violate our air space with the agreement of our government and kill innocent men, women and children. No questions asked. No public outrage. No country-wide protest demonstrations. No self-respecting country, big or small, would tolerate such intrusions.

Our country is in grave danger. Sixty-three years after Mr Jinnah gave us a great country, little men, mired in corruption, have hijacked it and destroyed his legacy. It is hard to exaggerate the baleful impact of Zardari’s rule: the oligarch and the mafia who have stolen every asset of any value, the inflation that has ruined the middle class and the poor, the corruption that has corroded all values and humiliated every decent citizen; and the insecurities that have filled everyone with fear and anxiety.

Pakistan is descending into chaos and is caught between a hard place and many rocks. The political arena seems more like a forum of mass entertainment than a place of serious deliberation. Parliament, the chief instrument of democracy is cowed, timid, a virtual paralytic, over-paid and under-employed, totally insensitive to the sufferings of the people it claims to represent.

The present leadership is taking Pakistan to a perilous place. The course they are on leads downhill. It appears as if we are on a phantom train that is fast gathering momentum and we cannot get off.

Why are people who owe everything to this country so silent? The tragedy is that each person feels what is wrong and knows what is required to be done; they all lament over it, ritualistically, in drawing rooms across the country but none has the will or energy needed to seek something better; all have lofty ideals, hopes, aspirations, desires, regrets, sorrows and joys which produce no visible and durable results.

What will become of poor Pakistan? “What the end will be”, Carlyle wrote, “is known to no mortal; that the end is near all mortals may know”.

What happened in Sept 2001 was TSPA got defeated without firing a shot by US and surrendered. The mess we are seeing is the consequence of that. Everything Roedad Khan's rhona/dhona can be explained by this.

War was avoided but the defeat was not overt, public and clear. What this did is to promote an internal civil war among various factions in TSP which is now a Temporary State of Pakistan being held together for Westphalian reasons.

- The Baloch civil war
- TTP in FATA/WANA
- The Karachi uprisings
- General breakdown of law and order
----------------

Even in 1971 the TSP managed to convince the common people that East Pakistan was a far away war and the loss was due to betrayal. Had Lahore been taken and the defeat was public in West Pakistan, the kabila would have been remade and TSP would have been a normal state.
Again the consequences of defeat are there to see:
- Baloch revolt
- SIndh MQM rising
so on and so forth

The ISI conducted 80% of the bomb attacks - mainly tactical I am told. This is not to say that TTP didn't do any attacks. ISI wanted to destabilise current govt, some were to get the US to react. But this info is at a prelim stage - trying to clarify and find out exactly what happened.

Hindu's and Sikhs - even women are being trained in terror camps I am told. Particularly people from border areas. Will talk more when I get it.

Of an old woman’s murder by son
Shakeel Anjum
Wednesday, February 29, 2012
How can one believe that a son murdered his mother over a property dispute? It really happened on January 9 this year when a retired army officer was found involved in the killing of his real mother (widow of Major General (r) Qazi Abdul Aziz) at her house in Harley Street falling in the jurisdiction of RA Bazaar Police Station.

The RA Bazaar Police took up the case and registered an FIR (10/2012) under Sections 302 and 109 of the PPC on the complaint of woman’s son Major (r) Amir Qazi and Sub-Inspector Rana Latif was deputed as investigation officer (IO) of the case.

Major (r) Amir Qazi, son of late Major General (r) Qazi Abdul Aziz, resident of Abbott Road, Westridge, in his written complaint, said that at about 4:30 p.m., he received a call from a servant of his mother, Rana Iftikhar who informed him that his mother was injured and in a critical condition. He said that he rushed to his mother’s house and saw that she was being taken to the CMH in an ambulance by his sister, Tania Qazi. He alleged that a dispute had developed between his mother and brother Lieutenant Colonel (r) Adil Aziz Qazi, his wife, sister and her husband, who killed her to grab property.

Police started investigation into the case after detaining people nominated by the complainant, but those associated with investigation, reeked some doubts in the story narrated by the complainant when they recorded the statement of the woman’s servant who was found injured in his quarter. Police picked out disparities in the tales of the complainant and the servant. Sardar, the servant, unveiled the real story and disclosed that the complainant was the real assassin.

It was Monday when Mst. Azmat Bibi was alone at her house (39 Harley Street), while domestic servant Sardar, who was serving the woman for more than 15 years, was in his quarter, the investigating officer, quoting the statement of Sardar, told ‘The News’.

In the meantime, Major (r) Amir Qazi, son of late Major General (r) Qazi Abdul Aziz and Mst. Azmat Bibi, came to the house and straightaway went to his mother’s bedroom, said the RA Bazaar Police official engaged with the investigation of the case, quoting the statement of the domestic servant. The servant, after hearing the yells of Major (r) Amir Qazi and cries of Mst. Azmat Bibi, rushed to the room and saw that he was torturing his mother. He was hitting on her head with an iron rod causing her death on the spot. Later, he targeted Sardar and injured him and left the house.

The investigation officer said that the complainant managed to cook up a story and implicated his brother, sister and brother-in-law to mislead police. However he confessed to his crime during interrogation.

Naveed’s father to take legal action against Meera
Updated 21 hours ago
LAHORE: Pakistani American Raja Pervez, who is the father of actress Meera’s fiance, has decided to initiate legal action against the star for swindling him out of $400,000, and not handing over a house in the Defence area of Lahore he had bought from her.

According to family sources, Raja Pervez asked his lawyer on Tuesday to initiate legal action against the actress. He has also renounced Irtza Rubab, commonly known as Meera, as the fiance of his son Captain (retd) Naveed Pervez. Raja Pervez said he had entered into a deal with actress Meera to buy a furnished house No 164 in GG Block of DHA for Rs20 million from her. A deed was signed by him and Meera in this regard and it was decided that the actress would hand over the house to him in six months. Actress Meera received a Bank of New York pay order worth US$400,000 from Raja Pervez on Oct 14, 2009 and both sides agreed that Meera would deduct the price of her house from the pay order and return the remaining amount to Pervez after encashing it. Meera also sent a receipt, duly signed by herself and her mother Mrs Shafqat Zuhra Bukhari, to Raja Pervez after receiving the pay order. The pay order was deposited in Meera’s account titled Meera Enterprise in Al-Mashriq Bank of Dubai, and the amount was transferred to the account.

Raja Pervez said later on Meera neither hand him over the house nor returned the money, deposited in her account. Whenever she was asked for possession of the house, she used dillydallying tactics, and still one of her relatives was living in that house.

He said he had sent Meera a legal notice through his lawyer in this regard, but she did not respond to it. He said meanwhile Meera came to his house in the USA, but he did not ask her about the house possession as he was busy in the wedding ceremony of his daughter that day.

Raja Pervez said he would also contact Attique, who claims to be the husband of Meera, soon and extend him all help against Meera, and also seek his help. When he was asked why did he engage his son Naveed Pervez to Meera when the actress had deprived him of $400,000, he became emotional. He said his son was also repenting his decision of getting engaged to Meera after theft of his very costly wrest watch. He said his son purchased a diamond ring for Rs850,000 from a jewellery shop at MM Alam Road and gave it to Meera at the engagement ceremony. He said he had consulted his legal adviser and soon an FIR would be registered against Meera.

Rapists seeking younger victims
Wednesday, February 29, 2012
According to the half-yearly report by War Against Rape (WAR) in the period Jan-June 2011, 68 percent of rape cases reported involved children. Of them 18 percent were aged 0-5 years, 27 percent between 6 and 11 years, and 23 percent from 12 to 17 years. Faiza’s case was the third of its kind reported in the last few days. Five-year-old Saima was found dead a day earlier. Her body had been tortured and she was gang-raped before being strangled to death.

Earlier this week, the police arrested a man for sodomizing a four-year-old boy in Lines Area. The year 2011 ended on a similar note with the murder of six-year-old Alishba. Not only was she raped, but one of her eyes was gorged out. Apart from these widely reported cases, Roshni Helpline, an NGO which deals with missing children, shares that this month in Mehmoodabad, a three-year-old Mehek was found in the same condition. In October 2011, the body of five-year-old Rehana Manzoor was found on Sharea Faisal. The girl belonged to Mubeena Town, like Faiza.

Shyamd garu,
Is that what you were referring to when you asked for the reasons why the spate of bombings seem to subsided these days? but why Hindus and sikhs? but we didn't hear any news about hindus and sikh 'terrorists' getting killed or apprehended in TSP? isnt it easy to pin the blame on SDREs but that didn't happen, in spite of lot of CTs? so that seems bit far fetched.

Yes, reason for why it has subsided is because IK is trying to get elected. He is trying to integrate everyone back- he is a pakhtun. Calls for peace in Balochistan etc. So post pull out they want him to be the uniting figure. Its quite messy. But the reason for less bomb attacks in the punjab heartland is because he is going for election with the TSPA backing.

Hindu's and Sikh's - they are for activity against spying/terror activity against India. Like I said, this info is at very prelim stage, so take with a pinch of salt for now.

Pakistan to switch to negative list for trade with India
This will pave the way for granting MFN status

After considerable dithering, Pakistan on Wednesday decided to switch to the negative list approach for trade with India and phase it out completely by December-end. Giving its approval to the long-pending decision, the Cabinet also cleared a 1,209-strong negative list of items in which bilateral trade is barred; thereby opening up business opportunities in an estimated 6,850 commodities against the 1,900-odd items now traded.

Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan said all stakeholders, including the naysayers — Textile and Industry Ministries — were on board and the decision to normalise trade with India was unanimous.

This paves the way for granting the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India as mandated by World Trade Organisation (WTO) commitments from next year onwards; thereby removing the discriminatory trade regime that Pakistan has had for India. India granted MFN status to Pakistan in 1996.

Given the sensitivities attached to the term MFN — which many here call Most Favourite (sic) Nation and in Urdu translates as sabse pasandida mulk — the Minister did not once refer to the WTO terminology except when asked a specific question.

Apprehensions

Till earlier this week, there were apprehensions that Pakistan may once again miss the self-imposed timeline it had announced for switching over to the negative list. Earlier, Indian officials were given to understand that the switchover would be announced during Commerce Minister Anand Sharma's visit mid-February. However, that decision was deferred as all stakeholders were not on board but during the visit itself the Indian side was assured that the switchover would be announced by month-end.

Initially, the Commerce Ministry had proposed a shorter negative list of just over 600 items. However the Industry Ministry appears to have had its way by getting nearly double that number in the protective list. And, for now, the Commerce Ministry has managed to weather the demand for staggering the normalisation of trade relations with India over five years.

Cross-LoC trade

As to whether normalisation of trade with India would tantamount to a dilution in Pakistan's position on Kashmir, the Minister said the matter was discussed in the Cabinet with Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani pointing to the Cross-Line of Control trade between the two Kashmirs.

Stating that 14,000 trucks had crossed over since the Cross-LoC trade began, Mr. Gilani's contention was that when the two main stakeholders in the ‘dispute' were engaged in trade, why should the rest of Pakistan not benefit from bilateral trade.

Pakistan decided to grant MFN status to India in early November 2011 but there has been considerable resistance to the move from within and outside the business community.

While some sections of the business community fear that cheaper Indian goods would swamp the domestic market, religious right wing organisations — led by Jama'at-ud-Da'wah leader Hafiz Saeed — sought to invoke traditional suspicions about India and its intent.

How to become a successful ‘rent-an-expert’ By Ayesha Siddiqa
If you are a white-skinned foreigner trying to make a career in journalism or academia, here is an opportunity of making it big by becoming an expert on the ‘most dangerous country’ in the world — Pakistan. The colour of the skin is critical for success because those guarding information inside the country about the country do not prefer darker complexion as it reminds them of what they were before being invaded and exposed to genetic re-engineering through processes that are better be kept secret.

Being a female helps tremendously as powerful circles in Pakistan believe that women are most effective in conveying messages to the world. A genuinely pretty face is not a prerequisite as long as the female has a man-attracting-magnetic personality, can speak English well, and falls in the category of a ‘liberal scum’ (most likely she will never be a true liberal). Although domestically numerous versions of females are now available, some of them original and other clones, to communicate the views of the ‘state within the state’, there is always the need for the superior version: the white-skinned female who can naturally speak with an accent and easily make inroads in the western system. A well-dressed woman with airs is certainly a huge advantage.

Exactly! Balochistan has gone past the point of no return I think, its just waiting for some power to give it the cash, media coverage needed (so far limited and US dropping slow hints when TSP relations are bad by getting NYT, WSJ to write a few articles as a warning to TSP). Its only the Pakhtuns that are enslaved. Now SLA arrives to the party and the Sindh Minister openly says its a product of discrimination and poverty! But I think all this is manageable for now except Balochistan. TSPA know their problems. Lets see what they solution they come up - certainly IK is the first solution. Remains to be seen if it will work. I think they want to resolve Balochistan (by murdering its leaders) before the election. After election, IK will be all lovey dovey with Balochistan.

http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-news- ... al-upsurge
Indian naval upsurge
Pakistan Naval (PN) Chief Admiral Asif Sandila, in an interview to the US weekly, Defense News, responding to a question regarding the threat Pakistan faces from an Indian nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed ballistic submarine upsetting the current strategic balance in South Asia, stated that “The strategic dimension of India’s naval build-up is a cause of concern not only for us but for the entire Indian Ocean region.”
Indian Navy (IN), in effect, is on a massive upsurge plan to build a blue water armada. Its colossal development plans include the acquisition of both indigenous and leased nuclear powered submarines and various other platforms capable of launching nuclear weapons to complete its triad i.e. delivering nuclear weapons from the air, surface and sub-surface thus confirming its second strike capability. India’s initiation to nuclear subs came with its acquisition of a Chakra class nuclear submarine from former USSR in 1987 on 10 years lease. The invaluable experience led to its desire for the development of indigenous nuclear submarines under the head of Advanced Technology Vessels (ATV) at Shipping Centre Vishakhapatnam in 1998. Indian scientists claimed that they have been able to fit an indigenous Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) of 90 MW in the ATV’s hull. However, it is assessed that the PWR has been acquired from Russia. By mid 96, an amount of US$ 185.7 million was spent on ATV project and the cost has now escalated to US$ 3.7 billion. At present, India has 14 active submarines in the fleet whereas IN has contracted France for 6 Scorpene submarines. These subs are being constructed in Indian shipyard and are likely to be inducted in Indian fleet by 2018. The Defence Committee of India has also approved procurement of 6 more conventional Submarines in addition to the six already being built with the help of France.IN’s other acquisitions include the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, renamed as INS Vikramaditya with 16 MiG-29K/KUBs and 6 to 8 Ka-31 AEW helicopters. India is also constructing 3 Indigenous Aircraft Carriers for the IN. It also plans to construct 3 destroyers of Kolkata class and Guided Missile Frigate’s, four ASW Corvettes, four 4 Saryu class Operational Patrol Vessels, four Landing Platform Docks, and acquire two Osprey Class Mine Hunters and eight P8-I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft from USA, besides developing additional strategic naval bases. In the face of such a massive build-up, PN has its task cut out. It cannot match IN ship to ship but the Pakistani Naval Chief in his interview stated “We are mindful of this development and taking necessary measures to restore the strategic balance.” The nation thus needs to invest prudently into building its navy

Same question I asked my source. The answer is because they have been busy building wide political support for the cause amongst the people there - TSPA operations have reflected that. Take a look at Syria for example, they majority of the protesters began with peaceful protests - to show that they are morally right. The more people that they kill, the more that come out to the street. Armed struggle is not always the answer but has its uses when the time comes.

Don't forget these groups are being backed by people who have their own pressures.

I think this is because the BLA wants to strategically manage the public (read: Western) perception of its violent activities. It wants to be seen as an entity that is fighting for freedom and are not just a bunch of terrorists. Taking out paki leaders outside Balochistan would mean that BLA is resorting to terrorism (not that going after paki leaders outside Balochistan would be difficult). Killing paki troops and pakjabi settlers in Balochistan will be "equated to" fighting the "invaders" on your home ground.

Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf party is going to use demagoguery to try to sweep the Baluch freedom struggle under the carpet. But the fact is that the historical record of the PTI and some of its members has been callous and even actively supportive of Islamabad's brutality against the Baluch. So while these people now speak sweet words, their deeds must not be forgotten.
From this video of IK's speech on Baluchistan:
Balochistan is not different than a musical chair game for the Pakistani politicians. Everyone wants a chance like the toddlers in kindergarten. Now a new emerging party which claims to bring a change in Pakistan that consist some old faces who once were the crime partner of Musharaf's government in Balochistan. PTI leader Imran Khan has also apologized to the people of Balochistan in a public meeting on 25th December in Karachi. With knowing the difference between Baloch & Balochi Imran Khan said ''I apologies to my Balochi brothers,'' he further said, "We have treated Balochistan like a colony.'' This is a historical fact that Balochistan was a free country, but it was forcefully annexed by Pakistan, and now it is treating the Baloch the way a colonizers treat the colonized people.

Imran Khan's PTI had protested number of times for Aafia Siddiqui, but Imran khan never uttered a single word for 150 Baloch women, including Zarina Marri and Haneefa Bugti, illegally kept in Pakistan's military cells. Imran Khan's PTI was on forefront against the drone strikes in tribal areas but remained silent on Pakistan military bombardment in Kohlu, Naseerabad, Mashkay and Mand towns of Balochistan. How many times PTI bothered to announce a rally for recovery of 1000's of Baloch missing persons or ever protested on recovery of 100's of bullet riddled bodies of Baloch youths? Even on his "massive" public meeting Imran Khan did not dare to utter a single word against ISI and Army for their offensives in Balochistan.

This hollow apology game is nothing other than a tool to engage the minds of Baloch to counter the freedom struggle. Now the Baloch nation is not in a position to accept the apologies of anyone, to betray the great martyrs, who did not sacrifice their lives asking for an apology from the rulers. They sacrificed their precious lives for an independent Balochistan. A straight and bitter message for all those who think that Baloch are hopeless: "Hopelessness is a sin but hoping from Pakistan is the greatest sin''

What will happen to the people of Balochistan? In this Pakistani government baloch have always sufferd the worst and they will suffer as long as they're a part of this country. Today's imran khan is no different from those who made the promises just to be elected. Balochs don't be fooled by stupid pakistani politicians and their fake promises.

Interesting summary of TSP.

Nawaz sharif now playing the bugti killers should be bought to justice and the Sindhi leaders have ignored their people. He is handing out laptops to Sindhi students.

It's clear that everyone is trying to reintegrate Balochistan and earn their vote. This is like when Assad offered a national dialogue. Let's see what the response is in balochistan

No basis for holding Dr Shakil Afridi: Hillary
Last Updated: Thursday, March 01, 2012, 16:23
No basis for holding Dr Shakil Afridi: Hillary Washington: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that there is no basis for Pakistan to hold up a doctor who helped the US in nabbing Osama bin laden.

Dr Shakil Afridi has been incarcerated by Pakistan since the May 2 raid that killed bin Laden.

"I agree that there is no basis for holding Dr Afridi or any of his staff," Hillary said at a Congressional hearing yesterday.

"In fact, I think his work on behalf of the effort to take down bin Laden was in Pakistan's interest, as well as the US's interest. We have made that view very well known. We will continue to press it," she said.

"And you know, it is going to be taken into account as we move forward," Clinton said indicating that the US is closely watching how Dr Afridi is being treated by Pakistan.

Hillary was responding to questions from Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, who recently introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to give the rare Congressional Gold Medal to Dr Afridi.

"If they do not let Dr Afridi go -- let me just put everybody on notice here and I believe that we're going to be watching this closely -- there is nothing that could suggest that Pakistan is cooperating with us in the fight against terrorism when they have Dr Afridi -- the man who helped us get Osama bin laden -- in prison and are treating him this way. That is their decision of non-cooperation," Rohrabacher said.

Rohrabacher said it is now illegal for the government of Pakistan to receive any aid money from the US unless the Secretary of State certifies that Pakistan is cooperating with the United States in counterterrorism efforts and preventing terrorists from basing their operations in Pakistan.

"Well, of course, the one Pakistani who did cooperate with us was Dr Afridi, who was the medical doctor who helped provide the information that led our Navy SEALs to where Osama bin Laden was hiding," he said.

The senator said that Dr Afridi now has been arrested by the Pakistani government and is facing a treason charge, while his property has been confiscated, his office staff been fired and he's being called a national criminal by that government. "So can you certify -- are you able to certify that Pakistan is cooperating with us as long as Dr Afridi -- the man who helped us get Osama bin Laden -- is in custody and being charged with treason?" Rohrabacher asked.

Hillary, however, did not directly respond to this question.

LAHORE: Pakistani Ahmad Amin Bodla on Thursday claimed to have broken the world record for the most number of martial arts kicks in one hour.

Bodla, who attempted the record at Children Library Complex in Lahore, managed 6,370 kicks in one hour. He broke the previous record of 2,982 kicks held by Indian Jayanth Reddy in 21 minutes and 46 seconds.

He had invited Guinness Book of World Records officials, but they had asked for 4,600 pounds to officiate the record attempt. He then asked local officials to look over it.

Bodla will now send the attempt video to Guinness Book of World Records, which can take up to six to seven months to verify.

Pakistan Supreme Court says ISI, army Intelligence 'biggest violators' of law
March 1, 2012
Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday rapped the ISI and Military Intelligence over the replies submitted by them about the detention of 11 men on terrorism charges, calling them the ‘biggest violators’ of the law.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry voiced its reservations while hearing the case of the 11 men who were detained by the intelligence agencies in May 2010 after being cleared by an anti-terrorism court.

The bench expressed its dissatisfaction with the written replies submitted by the intelligence agencies, in which they alleged the men were involved in several acts of terrorism, including attacks on the army's General Headquarters in 2009 and an ISI facility in Rawalpindi in 2007. During the hearing, the bench observed: "You need to take this out of your mind that you (ISI and Military Intelligence) are superior and others are inferior."

The Chief Justice asked Raja Irshad, the lawyer representing the ISI and Military Intelligence: "Under which law have you been detaining them?"

Irshad evaded the query and said the court's concerns were "being conveyed to the authorities concerned."

The Chief Justice further remarked that the intelligence agencies should act within the limits of law as they were not "above the law".

He referred to the intelligence agencies as the "biggest violators" of the law, saying they had become "insensitive" to issues.

Four of the 11 men detained by the intelligence agencies have died in mysterious circumstances over the past six months, while the others were in very poor health when they were produced in the apex court on February 11. The seven men were unable to walk or stand without help and some of them carried urine bags.

The Supreme Court took up the matter after Ruhaifa, the mother of three of the detained men, filed a petition. One of Ruhaifa's sons died last year and she herself died a day after the seven detainees were produced in court. The two intelligence agencies had contended in their replies that they could not close their eyes to "rebellious acts" by internal and external elements involved in terrorism.

But the bench said the replies did not state the law under which the civilians were picked up and kept in detention for over a year. The Chief Justice remarked: "We have to see why four prisoners lost their lives."

Raja Irshad referred to sacrifices made by the intelligence agencies but the Chief Justice responded by saying that only the Constitution can be followed. Irshad defended the intelligence agencies and said Parliament should pass more effective anti-terrorism laws to ensure that suspects are not acquitted on the basis on insufficient evidence. At this point, the Chief Justice said evidence must be produced before any detainee can be found guilty.

"They may have attacked General Headquarters or (an ISI facility), but bring the evidence," he said. The Chief Justice also questioned Irshad about alleged human rights abuses in Balochistan, where security agencies have been accused of killing and detaining hundreds of members of nationalist groups to put down an insurgency. "Dead bodies are being found and Balochistan is on fire," he said.

Irshad said the intelligence services accepted the Constitutional authority of the judiciary and that the seven detainees were being provided medical care at a hospital on the court's orders. However, the Chief Justice continued his criticism of the intelligence agencies.

"You are so insensitive to the human loss that the families of the missing persons have suffered because of you. This is a big allegation against you (ISI and Military Intelligence) – there is a hue and cry throughout the country that you abduct people and after some days, their abandoned bodies surface," he said.

The bench subsequently adjourned the case till March 16.

It wont count. On a kicks per minute Jayanth Reddy works out to 137 kicks/minute vs ~106/min for Bodla.

Not really, (Jayant reddy's is less than 50 a minute - 2982/60) but what is the definition of a kick? To me this guys kicks looked like a hen scratching the board.
