Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Actually not - as a quick Google for Orions and Nimrods armed with Sidewinders will reveal. This may be a capability that gets added later on but such SRAAMs are helpful more in case of a run-in with an enemy MPA or as a very last ditch defense against enemy interceptors, counting on pure luck for success in the latter case.jamwal wrote:A-to-A missiles on Poseidon is a far fetched idea. I don't think they they have a proper A-to-A tracking radar either. Those are anti-ship missiles only, Harpoons most likely. Air defence for these aircraft will be provided by escorting fighters.
In a low-threat environment where the P8Is are delivering a Harpoon strike against hostile ships operating outside protective air cover one doesn't even need a fighter escort with such a standoff weapon.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
The P8I is configured for it - but there is no open source confirmation for a notification of sale for these missiles in contrast to Boeing AGM-84L Harpoon II anti-ship missile and the Raytheon Mk 54 lightweight torpedoes, which is confirmed.Indrajit wrote:P8Is are supposed to carry SLAM ERs,are'nt we getting those ?

What happened to Sea Dragon upgrades ?
The APY-10 on P8I unlike P8A has A to A modes also to track aerial targets, it was special modification for IN.
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Detection and tracking, yes. But it's no good for fire control.

Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has also supplied critical equipment to the US aerospace major for the aircraft that will help it identify friendly and enemy planes and forces.
The aircraft is expected to be equipped with missiles such as Harpoons, which are also manufactured by the US.

I don't know where to put this
Read below and ask yourself one simple question, we Indians love gestures, we anxiously like to read about India's positive image in foreign newspapers, we love appreciation by the world. We take pride when India's glory is acknowledged. Well I was re-visiting writings about 26/11 attack on Indian nation, when this email below hit my inbox. After reading it, I wondered if it was too much for owners of Taj and Oberoi to ask the men of NSG to come down with their families for a weekend [off duty] stay or a simple cup of chai. Wouldn't it have been the coolest gesture? Sorry I didn't know where to post this. For me, a soldier is a warrior, a noble person, who let's his/her actions portray what Dharma is all about, service. Regardless of whether he marches under stars and stripes or the Dharam Chakra. God bless.
Sorry admin, I wanted to share this news while we remember Rupin Katyal who was murdered for being an Indian by Islamic terrorists.
Remember this next time you walk up to the ticket window of your local movie theater with $10 in your hand.
The Media (accidentally?) missed this one! Please read this: The troops overseas would like you to send it to everybody you know.
Subject: Denzel Washington and Brooks
Army Medical Center.
Don't know whether you heard about this but
Denzel Washington and his family visited the troops at Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, (BAMC) the other day. This
is where soldiers who have been evacuated
from Germany come to be hospitalized in
the United States , especially burn victims.
There are some buildings there called
Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel
where soldiers' families can stay, for little
or no charge, while their soldier is in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of
these houses on base, but as you can imagine, they are almost filled most of the time.
While Denzel Washington was visiting
BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of
the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one
of them would cost to build. He took his checkbook out and wrote a check for the
full amount right there on the spot.
The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear
this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed
their hearts to hear it.
The question is - why do:
Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan,
Paris Hilton,
Tom Cruise
and other Hollywood fluff
make front page news with their ridiculous antics, and Denzel Washington's Patriotism doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro
section of any newspaper except the
local newspaper in San Antonio !?

Hiten, thanks as always for posting, but minor nitpick - Avro 748, not An-32.
(Showing my age, in being able to recognise one of dem Avros ... )
Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
Groin protection is visible as a rectangular flap that hinges up with thigh movement. That is better than a cricket style ball guard which protects only the family jewels but not the femoral blood vessels inches away on either side.Hiten wrote:J&K police marching wearing riot gear

This armour was being marketed by some Indian company in a Security expo last year. They were in the process of selling it to police forces of other states too. Helmet looks different from what I remember.

Re: Miscellaneous Pictures - Indian Military
I discovered a bit of Indian aviation history at the PIMA Air and Space Museum in Tucson, AZ last week which I visited with my family. The museum has an IAF B-24J Liberator which the Indian government had donated to the museum after it was decommissioned in 1968. Well, the journey was a round about one that took the Liberator from the US to India for the Imphal C-B-I operations during 1945, saw it subsequently being given to the Indian Air Force (No. 6 Squadron) and, after its retirement, donated to the PIMA museum.
Below are a few photos from that exhibit. If BRF is interested, I have many more that I would be happy to transfer to BRF archives. Let me know. Enjoy.

anupmisra, very nice . That was HE 877, in IAF service.
I have an article up, on that particular aircraft (as well as a few on several other former Indian aircraft that are now in overseas museums). The one on HE 877 is at http://www.warbirdsofindia.com/ovb24/23 ... a-usa.html; Jagan's introductory page, with links to several other articles on the other Indian Liberator survivors is at http://www.warbirdsofindia.com/ovb24.html.
I would certainly be interested in the full set of your pictures, and I'm guessing Jagan would too - can you mail me at ksk underscore history at yahoo dot in, so we can connect one-on-one?

Anup: I visited Pima in 1995 and it was good to see an old friend there
whose photos you have put up. I too have photos
of that lady.
I grew up in Kanpur and remember the graveyard of B-24's.
It was in Mirpur in Kanpur Cantt. opposite the Traffic Police Lines.
Next to that a/c in Pima is a display case with the logbook
which traces the flight of that B-24 from Lohegaon AFS Pune to Pima
in 1969, did you take a photo of that logbook? I remember telling
the guide and our tour party all about Harjinder Singh and the Parsi brothers
who ferried the planes to HAL Bangalore.
There is another Kanpur aircraft that I have seen
and gone inside. It flies and was
in Trenton NJ two years ago, Jagan did you know about that?
Here is the a/c they give joyrides on it:
http://www.collingsfoundation.org/cf_fl ... iences.htm
$425.00 for a 30min flight in the B-24.
Here are the exact details of the Collings Foundation B-24

Note its not Khanpur but Kanpur in the Collings history,
I knew No. 1 BRD, AFS station Chakeri, Kanpur like the back
of my hand and the wife of the station commander
Gp. Capt. Kapadia was my art teacher in 1st and second

Sree and Jagan, a link was sent to you both where you can view and download all the 32 photos of the B-24J Liberator. Some shots (those by my ten year old son) are out of focus as he was trying out his new camera.
Apparently this plane has a lot of history and would love to see it documented on BRF. Enjoy and use as you please for the enjoyment of others at BRF.

Its an inside display now, but in the pic on BR

sounds.
