In Sept there was talk of no deal also.

THe game is truly gobal geopolitics.
American national security advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski in Strategic Vision (2012), “by conveying the impression that America sees China as its enemy even before China itself [has] decided to be America’s enemy.”

Moreover, a US-India alliance would be a gratis favor to Russia without any Russian favor in return. In fact, such an alliance would be inimical in two significant ways to long-term American interests in Eurasia: it would reduce Russian fears of China and thus diminish Russian self-interest in becoming more closely tied to the West and it would increase Moscow’s temptation to take advantage of a distracted America drawn into wider Asian conflicts to assert Russian imperial interests more firmly in Central Asia and in Central Europe.

This deal is to prevent the largest countries of Eurasia from coming together against the west.
India should be prepared for a border war in the north by 2020 and beyond. Indian elite should understand the meaning of this pact.

This was written in 1997.
A Geostrategy for Eurasia | Foreign Affairs
Eurasia is the world's axial supercontinent. A power that dominated Eurasia would exercise decisive influence over two of the world's three most economically productive regions, Western Europe and East Asia. A glance at the map also suggests that a country dominant in Eurasia would almost automatically control the Middle East and Africa. With Eurasia now serving as the decisive geopolitical chessboard, it no longer suffices to fashion one policy for Europe and another for Asia. What happens with the distribution of power on the Eurasian landmass will be of decisive importance to America's global primacy and historical legacy.
The seeds of the plan was put in for 25 years
A sustainable strategy for Eurasia must distinguish among the more immediate short-run perspective of the next five years or so, the medium term of 20 or so years, and the long run beyond that. Moreover, these phases must be viewed not as watertight compartments but as part of a continuum. In the short run, the United States should consolidate and perpetuate the prevailing geopolitical pluralism on the map of Eurasia. This strategy will put a premium on political maneuvering and diplomatic manipulation, preventing the emergence of a hostile coalition that could challenge America's primacy, not to mention the remote possibility of any one state seeking to do so. By the medium term, the foregoing should lead to the emergence of strategically compatible partners which, prompted by American leadership, might shape a more cooperative trans-Eurasian security system. In the long run, the foregoing could become the global core of genuinely shared political responsibility.

Seems very likely that the US does not seem to have moved on, given how they are pushing for a war with Russia when they do not have to -- Zbigwotsisname has been testifying to congress and the armed forces committee on the regular basis re: ukaraine and has been pretending he is still back in the 1980s. The US seems to have some motive to break up Russia in the long term -- possibly not wanting Russia as a competing power down the line, which is in line with Zbigwotsisname's wet dreams of US-China duopoly.

This part is amusing coming from a bunch of guys financing terror networks in pakistan
In similar fashion, Delhi could do more to caution Russia against the dangerous adventurism in which it has engaged, most prominently in Ukraine and Crimea. The Modi government should be willing to have uncomfortable conversations with Moscow, not as a favour to the Americans but because a world where rules are routinely disregarded and national borders violated is so patently contrary to Indian interests.
Ukraine is a matter between the US/EU and Russia -- no reason why India should pass on any advice to Russia on this front, just as it won't be passing on any advice to the USA.

A world " where rules are routinely disregarded and national borders violated is so patently contrary to Indian interests"  :rotfl: it seems -- they must think the rest of the world is too stupid to see through this "animal farm"-type rhetoric.

yes, At that time it was supposed to be implemented by NDA govt. PRC needs a more complex approach. With Japan helping India and Vietnam coming closer India will have to show who is the leader in Asia.
In the long term India may have to advocate nuclear Japan and nuclear Vietnam

Once India gets a bunch of competitive industries in place in sectors it has competitive advantage over china, bijnej with China would be on an even keel, unlike how it is now.

competitiveness must include IPR that includes chinese copy piracy. this is a biggest problem.

we can get into a great agreement and produce class products..

come in chippanda proxies, and the aam junta goes for the cheap product.

hence, allowance to china into the market must be governed by the agreements passing quality standards and piracy exclusions.

standards and policies should drive cars, electronics, and other services products into Indian market. have certifications and inspects of design at Indic afsar hands and right to reject product into India on account of design and patent violations.

free to trade, by strong policies on copying and piracy

Haven`t had time to scan the Indian press over Obama-hope it has been proper if warm. No 'Carterpuri' this time.

The wish for Obama's daughters' to be visiting falls in the Carterpuri syndrome. They seem to be fabulous young women and I wish them every success, but business is business. One needs to be professional.

Defence cooperation

As the world’s largest arms buyer, India is one of the most important markets for America’s defense industry—and it is a relationship that has thrived in recent years.
In 2014, the US became India’s largest arms supplier, breaking a decades-long Russian stranglehold over the sector. Simultaneously, New Delhi also became the US’s biggest arms buyer, unseating the Saudis.
But both realize that merely buying and selling isn’t enough, which is why Obama and Modi are now pushing for the co-development and co-production of defence equipment in India.
“Today, we have also decided to take our growing defense cooperation to a new level,” Modi said. “We have agreed, in principle, to pursue co-development and co-production of specific advanced defense projects… These will help upgrade our domestic defense industry; and expand the manufacturing sector in India. We will also explore cooperation in other areas of advanced defense technologies.”
Under the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI), India and the US have agreed to jointly explore four projects:
The next generation of Raven mini UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles)
Military kits for the C130 transport aircraft
Mobile electric hybrid power sources, which will work alongside traditional generators on the battlefield
Uniform Integrated Protective Ensembles (pdf), an advanced military garment that protects against chemical and biological warfare agents
The two countries will also see if they can collaborate on aircraft carrier and jet engine technology.
Pacific partnership

For some time now, President Obama has spoken of America’s “Pivot to Asia,” as he looks to realign the country’s diplomatic and military focus to the Asia Pacific region.
India has been seen as a key part of this strategy, particularly as a counter to China’s rise, even as prime minister Modi has sought to increase New Delhi’s economic engagement with Beijing.
Modi, in his statement, explained:
President Obama and I had an excellent discussion on global and regional issues. In particular, we renewed our commitment to deepen our cooperation to advance peace, stability, prosperity in Asia, Pacific and Indian Ocean Region, which is critical for the future of our two countries and the destiny of this world.
Obama was more pithy:
We’ve also agreed to a new vision for the Asia Pacific so that we’re doing more together to advance our shared security and prosperity in this critical region.

Obama’s savvy bet on India’s rise

Obama’s savvy bet on India’s rise
ED LuceEdward Luce
US adjustment to multipolar world will be shaped by whether it gets along with New Delhi
Matt Kenyon illustration©Matt Kenyon
With the big exception of India, all the Brics economies are slowing. For the first time since China’s cultural revolution, India will outgrow its Himalayan neighbour next year, according to the International Monetary Fund. On Sunday, Barack Obama became the first US president to visit India twice and the first to be invited as chief guest to its Republic Day parade. There is little downside to his India bet and a long-term upside. America’s ability to adjust to a multipolar world will be shaped by whether New Delhi and Washington get along. The fact that Mr Obama has hit it off with Narendra Modi — his political opposite in many ways — speaks volumes.
That said, it would be a surprise if Mr Obama could pull off the kind of deal that he did in China last November. The Obama-Xi Jinping climate change accord put lifeless international talks back into play. India’s stance will be critical to the outcome of the Paris summit later this year. Galvanising Mr Modi’s enthusiasm to do something on emissions is one reason Mr Obama so readily accepted his invitation (and made sure his annual State of the Union address did not clash with India’s Republic Day). It is hard to imagine Mr Obama going to such lengths for America’s traditional allies, whether Benjamin Netanyahu’s Israel, or David Cameron’s Britain. Nor should he. The rise of India is a geopolitical fact of our time. The manner in which it rises is critical to the future of the world.
Managing that requires the sort of patience that comes hard to US statesmen. There is an inverse link between India’s strategic importance to the US and its visibility on America’s immediate radar. Mr Obama did not even mention India in his address to Congress last week. Yet the timing of both his visits is revealing. The first took place in November 2010 shortly after Mr Obama’s first midterm electoral “shellacking”. This is happening after his second. It is as though Mr Obama is seeking refuge in the bigger picture. While Congress messes around with partisan gimmickry, Mr Obama is peering over the horizon at the world that is unfolding.
What then will his visit achieve? Alas, a photo-op with Michelle at the Taj Mahal is off the menu — Mr Obama had to cut that leg to attend King Abdullah’s funeral in Saudi Arabia. The serious answer is that it will be hard to measure. India will never be a military ally of the US. Though New Delhi fears an expansionist China, Mr Modi last year rolled out the red carpet for Mr Xi. He also hosted Vladimir Putin and refuses to join the US-led condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Japan’s Shinzo Abe is Mr Modi’s best friend. Mr Obama is his newest. India is hedging all bets. The American mindset tends to see the world in a Manichean light — you are either with us or against us. That will not work with India. Neither China nor India wishes to proselytise the world in its own image. Their rise marks a rupture with an epoch marked by the universal zeal of Europe and now the US. Having been born in the Pacific and partly raised in Indonesia, Mr Obama is unique among US presidents in being able to grasp this.
As noisy democracies, the US and India are the two rogue actors of global deals. Neither can be trusted to ratify what their diplomats have agreed. Both hammer out deals that their legislatures then refuse to sign. In contrast, China has a pretty good record in sticking to deals. India continually walks back from what others believe it has agreed to on trade. It also reneges on its climate commitments — last year Mr Modi repudiated India’s signature on the Bali deal. The US is no different. Capitol Hill is littered with deals it has spurned — the Kyoto treaty on global warming among them. Again, Mr Obama is temperamentally well attuned. Few US presidents have had so much difficulty persuading counterparts that they speak for Washington. In March, Mr Netanyahu will attempt to trash Mr Obama’s nuclear talks with Iran in an address to the joint houses of Congress. Which other country would tolerate this?
The specific answer on Mr Obama’s India motives is threefold. In addition to bridging gaps in the US-India civil nuclear deal, which seems to have been achieved before Mr Obama touched down, he needs India for the Paris talks to succeed. Mr Modi wants to quintuple India’s solar power capacity and the US can help. The fact that he also wants to double India’s coal output undermines that. Mr Obama is guilty of the same cognitive dissonance. Last week he urged the US to step up its fight on global warming while also boasting about rising oil production. There is no chance of a meaningful climate change deal unless the US and India see eye to eye. Second, Mr Obama wants a piece of India’s rising growth. China may well never return to the double digit growth rates of the past generation. India ought to be able to step into its shoes. US technology can help it along. Mr Modi knows that.
Third, Mr Obama needs a strong India as a hedge against a rising China. India needs the US for similar reasons. Neither leader will say anything in public about that. But as Mr Obama watches India’s nuclear missiles at the parade on Monday, the symbolism will speak for itself. The US once bent over backwards to thwart India’s nuclear ambitions. Mr Obama will be there in the stands as they roll past.

This Najam Sethi video explains the issues involved in the present Indo-US engagement:

The video largely does a good job of explaining the issues involved and respective positions of US and Bhaarath on those issues. But, please note that it is from a pakistani perspective and there will be certain amount of pakistani bias on the analysis.

Some of the salient points made by Najam Sethi:
- Climate change is important issue from Obama's point of view. He has already got China on board and wants Bhaarath also on board. It would be his victory if he can do it even if Bhaarath agrees in principle.

- Nuke deal has been the sticking point between Bhaarath and US. Tracking issue will be dropped by US. But, Sethi thought that liability aspect might be more difficult to solve. The sticking point was whether the liability will be of supplier(US) or the operator(Bhaarath). However, now we know that this issue also been solved to mutual agreement of Bhaarath and US by arriving at some middle path.

- China and Pakistan seem to be unnerved by Indo-US engagement. Raheel Shareef, Army General of Pakistan is visiting China right now. However, only a second general is meeting Raheel and not PLA chief.

- US has created a new Asia pivot against China. US already has Japan in. It wants Bhaarath also to be part of it. Australia also wants to be in. South-Korea will be in anyway. But, Bhaarath may play ball with both China and US while doing business with both.

- US wants to sell defence equipment to Bhaarath. Bhaarath is the largest importer of defence equipment according to Sethi. Most of the defence equipment is bought from Russia. Now, some of it is being bought from Israel and European nations. America wants a peace of action. But, the sticking point is Technology transfer i.e. Bhaarath wants technology transfer so that 'Make in India' can happen in those sectors in future. But, America does not part with its tech. Rather, it wants to only sell items. 'Make in India' is a big thing for Modi and he might insist on this issue in my opinion.

- US wants joint military exercises with Bhaarath to learn about Bhaarath's modus operandi on defence issues. Bhaarath agrees with military exercises but does not want them to be too closely integrated to avoid giving too much info to US on its defence modus operandi.

----
->America might get concessions on climate change issue while promising some clean tech transfer to Bhaarath. This is important for Obama.
->Bhaarath might agree to more defence import from US if there is tech transfer. Priority for Modi.
->America and Bhaarath have already arrived at middle ground on nuke deal. This is something that US and Bhaarath want to get out of the way.
->Bhaarath will play ball with US on anti-China pivot but will still not go overboard on this issue. But, defence cooperation of US and Bhaarath is definitely a cause for concern for China and Pakistan. Of course, Pakistan seems to be in panic that its being abandoned by US.

----
By the way, on the very day that Obama visited Bhaarath, Pakistan had a huge power cut and about the same time, Abdullah dies. It almost seems like its an omen about things to come.
