As soon as the auto-launch command was given, the 17-metre-long Agni-V lifted off majestically leaving a trail of orange flames and leapt into a sunny sky after the gas generator at the bottom of the canister gave it a forceful thrust.

Within moments after its ejection and upon reaching a height of around 30 metres, the first stage got ignited and separated. As it reached a height of more than 500 km and began descending rapidly, the subsequent two stages also got decoupled with clockwork precision and the missile’s nose cone carrying the dummy payload withstood searing temperatures of more than 3,000 degrees Celsius and impacted near the pre-designated point in the Indian Ocean after a flight of about 20 minutes

Eagerly waiting for launch pics.

It should be ignited and not Ignited and separated I think.

Chander saheb leaving DRDO with a bang. Happy retirement life sir. We shall not forget your services and contribution.

Also, if the missile is ejected by a gas generator, how will Orange flames come till the first stage is ignited? Also would it be 30m altitude only? That is very less... The truck would get roasted from the flames from the first stage.

^^^ In the un-canisterized version, the missile climbs from 0 mtrs with the first stage at full blast!

Every thing the TEL is hardened to withstand this. For example, the dummies missiles used in the Nirbhay launch were damaged, but the structure itself just needs a retouch of paint.

Congratulations DRDO and jingos, Agni V from a canister is a success. Here is @writake's (Anantha Krishnan)article on OneIndia:
India successfully test-fires N-capable Agni V Written by: Dr Anantha Krishnan M Updated: Saturday, January 31, 2015, 9:53 [IST]

The surface-to-surface Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Agni-5 was successfully test-fired on Saturday morning. This was Agni-5's third launch and the first from a canister.

Top Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sources confirm to OneIndia that the missile took off from Wheeler Island, off the Odisha coast, at 8.09 am and met all parameters during it --- flight.

As reported by OneIndia earlier, with the successful launch of Agni-5, the Missile Cluster of DRDO gave a perfect and emotional parting gift to its outgoing chief Dr Avinash Chander.

Dr Chander is scheduled to step down from the t, drdoop post today.

"All mission parameters were met. It was a dream flight. To us it was 200 per cent successful. We couldn't have asked for a better result. It's an emotional day for all of us," one of DRDO's Director General's told OneIndia.

Induction likely after 2 more launches
Saturday's was third launch of Agni-5 (A5-03 mission) from a road mobile launcher. The Gas Generator System (GGS) with a compact solid rocket motor housed inside the canister is used for ejecting the missile out of canister. Once the missile is out of the canister, a Stage-1 rocket motor is ignited, setting the missile on its course.

"Two more launches and we are hopeful of Agni-5's induction into forces," a DRDO official said.

Agni-5 is a three-stage, solid propelled, road mobile, state-of-the-art nuclear capable long-range ballistic missile (LRBM). With a launch mass of 50T, it is capable of delivering a payload of one tonne over a range of 5000 km.

All the three stages are controlled by flex nozzle control system and guided by an Innovative Inertial Energy Management Explicit Guidance.

The first two launches of Agni-5 were carried out in Hot Launch Configuration, with the first one (A5-01) on April 19, 2012 and second one (A5-02) on September 15, 2013.

Media kept out from launch site
The DRDO kept the entire launch as a low-key event and no media representative was taken to the launch site. "Dr Avinash didn't want any distraction and wanted to focus on the launch. He had said that any media interaction from his end, will only be after the launch or after his retirement from DRDO," a close aide of Dr Avninash said
Edited Later: Deleted image as not from present launch.

Agni-V's maiden canister trial a roaring success
Updated: Jan 31, 2015 11:07 AM , By Y. Mallikarjun, T.S. Subramanian
http://m.thehindu.com/news/national/mai ... 41942.ece/
The missile is expected to be inducted into service in a year after a few more canister trials.
Marking another technological milestone in the country’s missile programme, the maiden canister-based trial of India’s most potent strategic missile, Agni-V was successfully carried out for its full range of more than 5,000 km from the Wheeler Island, off the Odisha coast on Saturday.

A DRDO missile technologist who was associated with the launch described it as a grand success and said it was a perfect launch. Another missile technologist said it would be the footprint for future configuration of Agni-V.

The missile sealed in a canister and mounted on a TATRA track was launched in its final deliverable configuration at 8.10 am.

As it reached a height of more than 500 km and began descending rapidly, the subsequent two stages also got decoupled with clockwork precision and the missile’s nose cone carrying the dummy payload withstood searing temperatures of more than 3,000 degrees Celsius and impacted near the pre-designated point in the Indian Ocean after a flight of about 20 minutes.

The 17-metre-long, thee-stage solid-fuelled missile, developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is expected to boost India’s nuclear deterrence capability along with other strategic missiles in Agni series. Agni-V is capable of delivering a 1.1 nuclear warhead over a distance of 5,000 km and the range of missile can cover most parts of China and Europe.

A network of radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry stations, besides two ships stationed near the impact point monitored the health of the missile during its flight and recorded the terminal event.

This was the third successful flight test of the Inter- Continental Ballistic Missile and the first canister trial.

The missile is expected to be inducted into service in a year after a few more canister trials.

Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister Avinash Chander, the architect of Agni-V, who will be relinquishing office on Saturday, was present along with other top DRDO missile technologists, including Director-General of Missiles and Strategic Systems, Dr.V.G.Sekaran and Research Centre Imarat Director, G. Satheesh Reddy
.
Successful test-firing of Agni V from a canister makes the missile a prized asset for our forces. I salute our scientists for their efforts.

Per the above quoted Hindu article, the Agni V launch canister seems to have moved from being trailer mounted per picture posted by Singha (Clicky) to being truck mounted; specifically on a TATRA:

Canister Launch Of Nuclear Capable Agni-5 Successful From Wheeler’s Island Off Odisha coast
http://www.chinditsdefence.blogspot.in/ ... i.html?m=1
India on Saturday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed, intercontinental surface-to-surface nuclear capable ballistic missile ‘Agni-5’, which has a strike range of over 5000 kms and can carry a nuclear warhead of over one tonne, from Wheeler’s Island off Odisha coast.
The three stage, solid propellant “missile was test-fired from a mobile launcher from the launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at about 8.06 hours,” ITR Director M V K V Prasad said.

Prasad said that the canister version of Agni-5 missile was successfully test launched on Saturday. “The missile, witnessed a flawless ‘auto launch’ and detailed results will be known after all data retrieved from different radars and network systems.”

An eye-witness said, “The sleek missile, just within a few seconds of its blast-off from the Island launchpad roared majestically into a clear sunny sky leaving behind in its trajectory a trail of thin orange and white column of smoke and within seconds it pierced the sky”.

Saturday’s launch was the third developmental trial of the long range missile. The first test was conducted on 19 April, 2012 and the second test on 15 September, 2013 from the same base.
The indigenously developed surface-to-surface missile Agni-5 is capable of striking a range more than 5000 km. It is about 17 meters long, 2 metres wide and has a launch weight of around 50 tonnes. The missile can carry a nuclear warhead of more than one tonne.

Unlike other missiles of Agni series, the latest one ‘AGNI-5’, is most advanced having some new technologies incorporated with it in terms of navigation and guidance, warhead and engine, Prasad said.

“Lot of new technologies developed indigenously were successfully tested in the first Agni-5 trial. The very high accuracy Ring Laser Gyro based Inertial Navigation System (RINS) and the most modern and accurate Micro Navigation System (MINS) had ensured the Missile reach the target point within few meters of accuracy.

“The high speed onboard computer and fault tolerant software along with robust and reliable bus guided the missile flawlessly,” said an official.
India has at present in its armoury of Agni series, Agni-1 with 700 km range, Agni-2 with 2000 km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2500 km to more than 3500 range. After a few more trials, Agni-5 will be inducted into the services.

I don't think there is any Tatra truck that is capable of carrying the A5, I would guess that the tractor was changed from the regular civilian looking one (Volvo?) to a Tatra, may be same one that is in IA service for transporting armoured vehicles.

^ There exists higher end versions of Tatra - probly for exclusive TEL duty.

For eg, a 10 x 10 version is shown on beml website, developing 435 bhp, against the vanilla 8 x 8 versions with 315 / 355 bhp.

They seems to be using a small energitic booster to generate the pressure that throws out the missile from cannister and then the booster immediately separates using side thrusters , similar to Brahmos cannister launch
