DefExpo 2018 Chennai gets huge response
Posted On: 01 MAR 2018 1:42PM by PIB Delhi
DefExpo India has become one of the largest events of its kind in the world for the last 10 years. For the first time DefExpo is being held in Chennai from 11 to 14 April 2018 and there is tremendous response to the event. The location of the event is Tiruvidanthal, Kancheepuramdistrict on the East Coast Road near Chennai. Shortly, after announcement of the dates of DefExpo 2018 there is overwhelming response for participation from both foreign countries and domestic defence industries. 42 countries have already confirmed their participation and the number is expected to grow in the coming days.
The countries who have confirmed participation include, major defence manufacturing nations like USA, UK, Russia, France, Israel, Korea, Sweden, among others. Several of the delegations participating in the DefExpoare expected to be at the ministerial level. Several top Service Officers (Army/ Navy/ Air Force) are also participating in the DefExpo 2018.
The main theme of this DefExpo 2018 is to showcase India as a major hub of defence production in the world. This has generated tremendous enthusiasm amongst the domestic industries to showcase their indigenously manufactured platforms and components. Nearly ten companies are booking space for DefExpo every day. DefExpo 2018 is expected to be held in nearly two lakh square metre of space.

DefExpo 2018 – showcasing ‘India: The emerging Defence manufacturing Hub’
DefExpo 2018 will, for the first time, project India’s Defence manufacturing capabilities to the world. This is reflected in the tagline for the Expo, which is ‘India: The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub’. DefExpo 2018 will brand India as a defence exporter of several defence systems and components for all three Services - Army, Navy and Air Force. While showcasing strengths of India’s substantial public sector, it will also uncover India’s growing private industry and spreading MSME base for components and sub-systems.
DefExpo 2018 will brandish Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd’s various flying platforms including domestically designed and manufactured fourth-generation Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) - Tejas; Advanced Light Helicopter - Dhruv which have both civil as well as combat variants; Light Combat Helicopter for which IOC was received recently; Dornier civilian aircraft for which DGCA clearance was received and which is likely to be inducted for regional connectivity purposes. Apart from HAL’s platforms, the Expo will also promote domestic private industry and aero-components industry.
As the DefExpo is being held on sea-shore, along the East Coast road enroute Chennai to Mahabalipuram, it provides Indian Navy to brandish its domestic design and manufacturing capabilities. India will proudly present its Naval designing capabilities in shipbuilding. India is one of the few countries of the world with capabilities to design a naval vessel from scratch to finish. India will also physically showcase, along the shoreline several frigates, corvettes and other ships. The exhibition will also unveil India’s capabilities in manufacturing Scorpene class submarine. Naval shipyards in public sector including Mazagon Docks, GRSE, Goa Shipyards, Hindustan Shipyard and private shipyards will bring to view their capabilities in manufacturing and servicing ships. Kattupalli shipyard of L&T is only 40 km from Chennai and visitors to DefExpo can easily visit the same. It is relevant to mention that Indian shipbuilding is marked with growing indigenisation levels and 'float' of ships built in India have nearly 90% indigenous components. There is growing demand for Indian built vessels from many countries in South Asia, ASEAN and Africa and DefExpo will be a perfect stage to unfold the might of India’s shipbuilding capabilities.
As regards land systems, India will unveil its 155mm Advanced Towed Artillery Gun (ATAG) in DefExpo. This is the first time that India has its own ATAG which has been designed and developed by DRDO in partnership with Kalyani Group, Tata Power and OFBs. India also proposes to showcase its tank making capabilities, including MBT Arjun, T90 and T-72, Bridge Laying Tanks (BLTs) with a span of over 70 feet among others. India will also be showcasing 155mm artillery gun 'Dhanush'. DefExpo will also provide an opportunity to showcase India’s plans for putting India on the global map of small arms manufacturing with its decision to manufacture about 7.5 lakh Assault Rifles, 3.5 lakh Carbines and about 40,000 LMGs.
India will also showcase its Missile and Rocket manufacturing capabilities, including BrahMos missiles available for all kind of attacks including surface-to-air, air-to-air and sea-to-air. Further Akash Missile system will be a major attraction at DefExpo. Pinaka rockets will also be highlighted during the show.
Given the focus on highlighting India as an emerging defence production hub, DefExpo 2018 has earmarked at least half the space for domestic exhibitors. This will make DefExpo 2018 the biggest ever opportunity to show their capabilities and integrate with the global supply chain of defence manufacturing. Emphasis is being given to invite delegations from countries which have shown keen interest in India’s weapon systems and platforms so that DefExpo 2018 provides a boost to overall defence manufacturing capabilities in the country and to its export potential.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
I'll be visiting the expo, just to gaze at the mechanical monsters. Is it worth taking a Business Pass for that or will a General visitor pass be enough ? Also are there any restrictions on the movement/visibility to the displays, for General visitor pass holders ? I understand visitors are allowed only on the last day & there might be a mad rush. So, is opting for a Business pass a safer idea, considering that it might allow one to view the products at a leisurely pace ?

^^This is the first year and the novelty may not have caught on. Gen visitor pass may work IMHO
Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
They'll give passes for the last day for sure to psu employees' families.
Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Alright. But the last expo I visited was the DRDO exhibition at HVF Avadi, last year. There was a mad rush on the last day, with local folks coming over & kids running around. It resembled more like a picnic/photo op, leaving out the chance for people like me, to do some serious observations. I'm pretty sure all the locals from ECR would turn up in good numbers, even if the city folks give it a miss.shiv wrote:^^This is the first year and the novelty may not have caught on. Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Better play it safe and get a business pass, saar. The date coincides with the new year holiday and schools are anyway shut for summer by then.
Just realized that its not a good time for an exhibition in Chennai - folks are in for a roasting!
Anyone else planning to go? Maybe if there's a BRF meet around the time, it may be worth a quick trip downhill by the Shatabdi...

By the "Shit-badly!"Pondering about taking a dekko, but where on earth on that orrible OMR rd. is this venue? Better going on a biz day,as there'll b heaps of bizmen from Chennai too. There are innumerable component suppliers in the metro.
Ckd. he map,.It's aeons from the city.Almost as far as Mahabalipuram.Best place to stay would be the Covelong Beach run by the taj,but that must be booked completely by desi officials, delegates, etc,I think since its got a beach frontage, some warships will be anchored off the beach, possibly visits to them? That would be worth it.

Hey did anyone see this "Open challenge" from Defexpo 2018 page?

https://defexpoindia.in/Open%20Challenge%20Problems.pdf
Terms and Conditions for
National Level Open Challenge Competition– “Solution to Problem” – DEFEXPO 2018
Govt. of India (MoD) proposes open challenge for „solutions to the problems‟ from Innovators,
Students, Professionals, Participants and Foreign Nationals who are attending Defexpo – 2018
Event.
1.
Topic (Problem):
1.1 Ejection Mechanism for Helicopters
Due to the clearance problems with the rotating blades, pilot ejection from Helicopter is
extremely difficult than the ejection from Fixed Wing Aircraft. Design the safe ejection
mechanism for Helicopters.
or
1.2 Nap of the Earth / Valley Flying using auto pilot due to GPS signal corruption in
hilly areas / high rise buildings
GPS/Satellite Navigation is a universal navigation tool employed for a plethora of
purposes and by varied users. Aircraft/Helicopter/UAV navigation is one such application
which depends heavily on GPS/Satellite Navigation. Under normal flying conditions, GPS
signal is usually uninterrupted and the accuracy of the system is generally adequate.
However, GPS system has a few problems and the first one is that the system is owned
by a foreign government and therefore susceptible to political upheavals. Secondly, GPS
due factors like multi bounce, atmospheric effects, etc GPS signal gets corrupted and this
gives an erroneous navigation solution which may cause serious problems specially when
flying NOE (Nap Of Earth) or while flying around valleys in poor visibility conditions. It is
therefore important to device a mechanism which would assist in carrying out the
aforementioned tasks effectively even in a GPS denied environment.
Problem : Design a system which would ensure high navigation solution integrity even in
an environment with poor or no GPS/Satellite navigation signal. The system can either be
an independent sensor or may make use of existing self-contained systems
(Accelerometers, Gyros, Magnetometer, etc)
or
1.3. Location based tactical messaging collaboration platform:
Providing real time location of a group of troops on a single screen has many advantages.
The group of people can be member of an elite force who are infiltrating a terrorist/naxalite
location. Their real time location can provide them situational awareness and upper edge
in decision making. Text to Speech and Speech to text is an important requirement for
many of modern warfare applications.
Mobile based application can be developed that will help the troops to locate other
members of group in real time using GPS technology. Proposed architecture should also
provision exchange of real time multimedia streaming among the group members. Real
time marking/notification on the map will help other members to identify the treat and act
accordingly.
Or
Page 1of 4 1.4. Auto Identification of Drones/UAV
Over the decade, the popularity & accessibility of drones/UAVs have increased.
Drones/UAVs are now gaining high interests from both military and civil market. Due to
this, the misuse of technology is also reported all over the world. This initiates a need for
identification of the drone before an action is initiated to destroy its mission.
Methods to implement real time/automatic identification of drones/UAVs need to be
evolved/proposed.

The first 2 challenges are rudimentary; solutions for these have already been developed by other nations/aviation conglomerates.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Same here. I am not qualified. It is a coincidence that yesterday I was talking to an entrepreneur who is building a drone cum recognition-cum-disabling system.
Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
And I am barred, but here's my solution.
Explosive charge at rotor hub triggered during ejection sequence to separate the rotors a second before ejection seat fires. Similar to line charges for shattering the canopy.
Challenge of helicopters is not rotors but because low flying leaves very little altitude and reaction time for the ejection sequence.
The last Jaguar crash in Gorakhpur had a young pilot doing hard manoeuvres at treetop level. The plane crashed before the pilot could pull the ejection seat handle.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
I was sent by whatsapp, two intriguing developments. The first a seaplane WIG system used,A hybrid, which would be v. useful for the IN/CG,etc. Sent to pal to send it upstairs.Second one.A civvy airliner with a detachable cabin, which with parachutes would bring the entire cabin of an airliner back to the ground safely in the event of a crisis aboard. Some light aircraft designs a long time ago had paras fitted to land the aircraft in the event of an emergency.
Looks like its highly unlikely that i'll be able to make it to the Defexpo.Just too far out of town.Madras ,sorry, this is new extended Chennai, traffic is a b*tch.Hate it.Plus the weather there is going to be roasting hot. Hotels nearby would've all been filled up.so too the clubs.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
That is the most commonly thought out solution. I think Ka-50 had tried to/has implemented it. It was even attempted on the AH-64 but there were some catastrophic results during the tests & the plan was abandoned altogether.tsarkar wrote:And I am barred, but here's my solution.

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
Sir, Chennai is no longer the Madras, of the old. New hotels have cropped up all over the city, in the past few years. Traffic is not as high as Bengaluru & even during peak hours, they are managed properly. Now you can't blame the weather but its not some God-forsaken land. People do live there!Philip wrote:Looks like its highly unlikely that i'll be able to make it to the Defexpo.Just too far out of town.Madras ,sorry, this is new extended Chennai, traffic is a b*tch.Hate it.Plus the weather there is going to be roasting hot. Plus, this event is located on a property on the ECR. Once you step out of the city & navigate on to the ECR, the rest of the journey should be a breeze.

There are tons of hotels 5-star downwards on OMR which is parallel. Can't do much about the weather though

Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
whoa! that's good. Atleast there's a full blooded frigate on show but why no destroyer
Btw, make sure you plan properly because the Exhibition ground & the Port are on the opposite ends of the city; would take a solid 1 hour to travel, not counting the weekend traffic. Expo opens at 9am, I guess & the port visit closes by 3pm. So, it's going to be a squeeze.

Any idea if cameras would be allowed into Defexpo? The visitor pass page mentions stuff that is forbidden but does not list cameras but I don't want to cart something around in the heat if it is not going to be allowed.
What about on the warship? Should I even bother taking a camera with me?
What about smartphones for both of the above?

What about on the warship? Should I even bother taking a camera with me?
What about smartphones for both of the above?
I will be carryng my camera for the expo and will also be collecting every Brochure i can get my hands on
Re: DefExpo 2018 Chennai
I can't seem to find any reference online regarding the terms & conditions for the port visit. No mention anywhere of the exact pier/pontoon where these are docked & how to reach that location ? What type of permissions are required ? What kind of IDs are accepted for verification ? Whether mobile phones are permitted ? etc..

I did check that but they update the info only on the vessels which are berthed on that particular day or are planning to berth.
